The Christian life can be exhausting at times. Serving God is fulfilling, but it takes a toll on us when we begin to lean on our own strength. But God is faithful in showing us our limitations so that He can display His power. Unfortunately, the only way we can see it is often when we are pushed to the end of ourselves. As He faithfully provides storms to get our attention, we should not rush to pray for relief. Instead, we should listen for the voice of the one who allowed it in the first place.

About 12 years after Jesus commissioned the disciples to take the gospel to the ends of the earth, the converted Pharisee, Saul of Tarsus, set sail on his first missionary journey to the Roman province of Galatia. The challenges that he faced on the road later grew into the conflicts addressed in his letter to the churches a short time later. As with any conversation, context is the key. In the case of the letter to the Galatians, Acts 13-14 teach us important context for us to fully grasp the weight of its message.

It seems impossible that marriage or children could be considered idols. After all, they are both gifts from God, right? The definition of an idol as anything that we put in the place of God as an authority over our lives. That means anything can get in the way of living according to His plan for us, even our spouse and children. It is important for God's people to understand just how dangerous and sneaky idols can be. If we want to have a healthy perspective and live fulfilled lives, we must be willing to put everything on the altar for Almighty God.  In this lesson, pastor Philip Jackson finishes his series on (un)acceptable idols with the final lesson on marriage and children.

Flicks with The Film Snob

Mike Leigh’s 1988 breakthrough film already contains what makes him great: working class issues, funny believable characters, and a fine sensitivity for the miseries of family life. For decades I've been enjoying and writing about the films of English director Mike Leigh: Secrets & Lies, Topsy-Turvy, Vera Drake, these are just a few examples. But it was only recently that I watched his breakthrough film, the movie that essentially brought him to the attention of the world, from 1988: High Hopes. It seems to me that High Hopes provides something of a key to Leigh's work. Cyril and Shirley are a leftist working class couple living in London, and getting by on low wage jobs. Cyril, played by Phil Davis, is a Marxist intellectual who's become embittered about the possibility of change in the era of Margaret Thatcher. Shirley, played by Ruth Sheen, shares his radical orientation, but she is more practical, more positive, and very funny. They are good caring people who sometimes quarrel like most couples. Cyril's elderly mother, played by Edna Doré, lives in her own flat and seems permanently depressed, her cognitive abilities and energy clearly at a low ebb. Cyril and Shirley try to be helpful to his mom, but she tends to resist help. Cyril's sister Valerie, played with manic intensity by Heather Tobias, puts on a big show of loving their mom and doing nice things for her, but her constant annoying giggle fails to conceal her unacknowledged rage. She's married to a cynical and abusive used car salesman, a real creep named Martin, played by Philip Jackson. These are the five main characters, but there are others with scenes that are funny and significant. The mother's next-door neighbors become involved when she locks herself out of her flat. These neighbors are hilariously clueless upper class twits played by Lesley Manville and David Bamber. They temporarily take over the film. One of the things this movie made me realize is that even though Leigh's characters tend to be “oddballs” and eccentrics, and the minor ones are often outrageous (but funny) caricatures, they all look more like people I know or see in everyday life than the sanitized, superficially flattering versions of ourselves that we see in most films and TV. In Hollywood terms, Ruth Sheen, for instance, looks awkward and ungainly, but she is the one performer in the film that you will remember most of all, because she plays such a genuine good person. After awhile you lose that initial awkward impression and accept her and her pleasant looks like you would real people you might know. As in many of Leigh's films, High Hopes is centered on working class issues. The frantic yuppie Valerie and her craven husband represent the emptiness of consumer society, and the upper class twits are utterly self-centered. But the movie doesn't idealize the central couple. Cyril feels too powerless and disgusted to stay involved in activism. And he rejects Shirley's desire to have a baby because the world is too corrupt to raise a child in. This conflict between them, which keeps recurring, happens within a real loving relationship, so it doesn't break them. But it's poignant. The plight of the elderly mother evokes some deep sadness. Why her life has disappointed her we never learn completely, although there are clues. But Leigh takes the time to present the chaos in her insane family from the old lady's point of view, and it is tremendously moving. The writing is witty and thoughtful, and it should be noted that, as in all Leigh's films, the actors helped write their own dialogue. It's rare also to see an essentially comic film have an impact as a good domestic drama as well. High Hopes

Design is hard to get right, easy to screw up. As a rule don't have more than two fonts. You can differentiate with different weights like bold or italic, different font sizes and colours can all help differentiate. Same with photos, try to get the same angle and background, but be consistent. Do all white background Amazon style photos or lifestyle photos. Walk through your store the way customers would. Do you need to close out multiple tabs and popups to view the merch? I talked about it with Philip Jackson a few months ago, but there is good friction and there is bad friction. Don't overlaod your customers with bad friction. Be familiar, but original. It's getting into the holiday season, and there are always ads like ho-ho-ho hold the payments. A coffee website used this tactic to do ho-ho-hold the sugar as a way to be timely and demonstrate and value of their product. With inventory shortages, make sure you're not featuring too many out of stock products too far up. Some can help you establish social proof, but too many just gets frustrating for customers. One of the biggest hiccups is anything that takeaway trust. It's not just dropshippers, but things that aren't consistent. The only question you want your customers to ask is “how badly do I want this?” Not do I trust this company with my credit card.

In his 1968 classic, Life in Schools, Philip Jackson coined the phrase “the hidden curriculum”, the implicit rules, values, norms, and behaviors in any school that students must learn in addition to the stated classroom curriculum. Learning this hidden curriculum becomes even more challenging when students' backgrounds differ from the “dominant cultural context” of their school. In this episode we speak with Elly Fishman, author of the recent Refugee High: Coming of Age in America, a book that chronicles a year in the life of Sullivan High School, a Chicago Public School where over three dozen languages are spoken and where half of the student body consists of recent immigrants and political refugees.

Another Adobe Summit has come and gone, with all the revelations of digital innovations, deep dives into detailed public discussions, and A-list celebrity schmoozing that includes, in so-far as a global economy shaken, confused and disrupted by the last year and a half's COVID-19 pandemic can manage. Lucas's fellow e-commerce expert Philip Jackson shares his highlights of this year's announcements, a few surprises to keep your eye on, and the newest developments to help e-commerce retailers stay at the top of their game. Adobe's strategy: Never one to bill themselves a 'House of Brands', Adobe is a 'branded house', adapting and adopting other developers, programs and innovations into the Adobe melting pot, rather than simply becoming their newest distributer, and this winning strategy shows no sign of stopping. Adobe will continue expanding and acquiring new programs, such as Workfront, that allows a seamless connection between Adobe Creative Cloud and Experience Cloud, allowing outside companies to help drive innovations themselves, then integrating those outside ideas to better serve their customers. It's Adobe's intent that someday, the entire e-commerce ecosystem will work closely with its individual parts together, lead by Adobe and their innovation integration strategy. Changes coming to Magento : Adobe's open source e-commerce platform will face a face-value only name change, away from it's original brand Magento to the new in-house label Adobe Commerce. While at this point a veteran of the digital retail landscape, continues to keep up with the competition, no matter how close they increasingly come to overtaking the programming giant. Purchased by Adobe three years ago, Magento once ruled the e-commerce economy, when that ecosystem was a much smaller pond. With so many new platforms taking precedence, the acquisition had lagged somewhat on leading the field. That doesn't mean they're down and out though, with the newly rebranded Adobe Commerce offering a more stable, well rounded experience for digital retailers. The Magento Project itself will continue as a separate organization under the same name, no longer tied to the consumer product offered by Adobe. Expanded features for Audience Manager: Adobe's intelligent segment profiler can now break down a viewer's activities, interests and emotional tells, tracking and measuring a user's interaction and dwell-time on a page, to better determine what specific segments have real emotional and personal impact on a customer. This gives online retailers a much deeper pool of details and personal information to take advantage of when loading and planning automated outreach campaigns, or even page by page personalization. New shipping partnership: Adobe and FedEx are teaming up to bring ShopRunner, FedEx's e-commerce delivery and logistics system to Adobe Commerce, allowing online retailers the ability to offer last minute two-day shipping, a seamless checkout experience, and an easier system for accepting product returns. His creativity knows no bounds as he does an extraordinary amount of private work and exhibitions and in that work shows an entirely different side to his creativity. His distinctive Venice-inspired sculptures are brooding and ominous and for me, who loves the dark side of art, endlessly fascinating. Join us and BE INSPIRED BY SCULPTURE. This podcast was brought to you by Antique Bronze Snippet from the interview: Lucy: I began our discussion today by asking him, if he'd always been creative? Philip: I think I probably have, yes. I mean, I sort of just decided to be a sculptor at the age of eleven. So I suppose you could say that's for a very long time. Lucy: And so was it someone at home that encouraged that, or school? Philip: No, I went to boarding school very early. My parents were in West Africa. My father was in the colonial service. And so I used to go out to Africa every summer, but in the Christmas and Easter holidays, I would be farmed out to my grandmother or my great aunt. They were quite elderly so I had to, as it were, find my own amusement. But they did have very good libraries of books. And so I spent quite a lot of time reading. And I discovered Graeco-Roman sculpture and I thought it was the most extraordinary thing that these wonderful things could be made by the hand of man. And then, I think at the age of 11, I bought what I think was probably my first book, which was a secondhand book on sculpture that was being done by people that were actually still alive. So I suppose the penny dropped that, you know, this wonderful thing called sculpture had been done since Graeco-Roman times and before, right up to the present time. And I thought, well, you know, that's what I want to do. So I suppose that's really how it came about. Lucy: Right. Did you then start to pursue it more? Philip: Yes. I mean, my school really didn't teach art in the way that schools teach art these days. And so I, sort of, ploughed a fairly lonely furrow to try and find out how you carve things, how you model things, and all that sort of thing. And then at the appropriate age, I was staying with my great aunt and I said to her, "Look, you know, I think I want to go to art school." And so I went for an interview and everything and got in. And, you know, so it's gone from there.

Is faith the same as belief? One of the greatest lies that Satan tries to convince God's children of is that they are the same thing. But that's not what God's word says. In this passage, the Apostle Paul teaches us that faith is the path to a miraculous, free life. As children of God, we have access to the ultimate freedom, but many times that freedom is bogged down by a worldly perspective of our circumstances. In Christ there is freedom and an invitation to see the world with limitless opportunities. This lesson is part two of a two part crossover event between REACH Young Adult Ministries and TCC Baptist Collegiate Ministries (BCM). In this lesson, Philip Jackson, Pastor to Young Adults at Evergreen Church, discusses how faith leads to freedom.

While a trip to the dentist with Agatha Christie is the only trip to the dentist one might actually enjoy, we are sad to report our enjoyment of this novel was somewhat sullied by the incompleteness of the puzzle mystery therein. Thank goodness for Inspector Japp, who makes his final appearance in a Poirot novel in these pages, and who does not disappoint on screen either, as brought to life by the talented Philip Jackson.

As the African Soul Rebels 2010 tour kicks off in the UK we join the rebellious spirit starting the broadcast with Gil Scot-Heron's The Revolution will not be televised from 1974 followed by the people's poet and veteran of the Soweto Uprising, Mzwakhe Mbule's Change is Pain from 1986. Two artists linked by their social commentary rooted in black freedom. Gil Scot Heron with the civil rights movement in the US and Mzwakhe Mbule with the struggle against apartheid in South Africa, two artists who would surely have influenced the first African Soul Rebels - Lesego Rampolokeng with the Kalahari Surfers Celebrating another rebel, Grammy Award winning Oumou Sangare calls for women to rise up and challenge the "big shot" men, her new approach to music and powerful lyrics Oumou joins TP Orchestre Polyrythmo to complete the line up for the African Soul Rebels tour. To fit in with mood of rebellion, our album of the week comes form Tamikrest a young Touareg band, hailed by Andy Morgan, ex manager of Tinariwen, "as the future of Touareg music". Finally we are pleased to broadcast the special feature package courtesy of Philip Jackson and Music Beyond Mainstream giving you background detail and more of a taster of this years African Soul Rebels Tour. Hope you hear something you enjoy and please accept my apologies for the ropey start and technical problems at the beginning of the broadcast.
