The Office of Personnel Management has created a new email account meant to collect reports of suspected diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, one of a series of moves the Trump administration has taken to slash DEI efforts across the federal workforce. According to a Jan. 21 memo available online, OPM directed agencies — which are now engaged in the process of shutting down diversity initiatives — to collect reports of any efforts to disguise such initiatives. The memo states that the administration is aware of efforts by some in government to disguise DEI programs by using coded or imprecise language, calling for anyone aware of a change in any contract description or personnel position description since November 5, 2024 to obscure the connection between the contract and DEI or similar ideologies to report all “facts and circumstances” to the email account DEIAtruth@opm.gov within 10 days. Failure to report such activities could result in “adverse consequences,” the memo notes. The White House sent Michael Kratsios's nomination to direct the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy to the Senate on Wednesday, formally beginning his confirmation process. Kratsios was chief technology officer during the first Trump administration and was most recently managing director at Scale AI, a technology company and defense contractor focused on AI model training data. Sending his nomination to the Senate officially starts the confirmation process and puts him among the first of Trump's selections officially transmitted to the chamber.  Dr. Jim discussed the importance of building equity for Black women in leadership and welcomed a panel of guests to the show. TThe three panelists discussed the role of leadership in advancing black women into leadership roles in sales. Sertrice Grice has a background in industrial organizational psychology, and is passionate about allyship and inclusive behaviors. She and her business partner recently wrote a book called Inclusalytics and are also creating a training course on allyship .Dr. Jim asked Grice why it's important to have a data-driven approach to DEI. Grice explained that collecting data and hearing the employee voice is critical in order to drive DEI strategy, before beginning behavior change interventions. She also emphasized the importance of not just collecting data but also being transparent about it and taking action based on it. This is necessary to avoid the performative space and ensure that employees actually see changes being made.Wesleyne shared that many leaders have a similarity bias and don't look outside the box, industry, or what they know to find people with innate sales skills. Whitney Goins noted that leaders need to create an inclusive and diverse work environment and empower black women to take on leadership roles. She suggested that leaders should also provide mentorship, resources, and support to help black women in the sales field. They concluded that leaders should prioritize creating a culture of inclusion and opportunity for black women in sales if they want to create meaningful change in the industry.Whitnie Goins is a Global DEI Manager for a real estate investment trust company. She has had success in sales and marketing in multiple organizations, but she has always gone beyond the scope of her role to amplify the voices of historically marginalized groups. When she was working in marketing innovation, she noticed an opportunity to educate their commercial organization on how to approach communications during times of communal trauma and horror. This started her transition into DEI, and she loves her work. This special episode of Compliance Clarified was recorded for International Women's Day. Rachel Wolcott and Lindsey Rogerson, both senior editors at Regulatory Intelligence in London, are joined by Dr Louise Ashley of Queen Mary University's London School of Business and Management and Centre for Research on Equality and Diversity. Louise has spent a decade researching social inclusion in the City of London. Her book Highly Discriminating: Why the City Isn't Fair and Diversity Doesn't Work is based on interviews with more than 400 city leaders and workers was published last year. She was a working group member of the City of London Corporation Taskforce on Socioeconomic Diversity andled research for the government's Social Mobility Commission.City firms have been trumpeting their diversity and inclusion programmes, but in this episode, we look at what is actually happening. What Dr Ashley illustrates in her work, is a complex situation where D&I programmes have achieved some incremental change, but at a cost to individuals. To "make it" women and individuals from ethnic minority and lower socio-economic backgrounds must assimilate to the prevailing financial services culture, which is white, middle-class, and male. D&I programmes have been sanitised politically and co-opted to serve City firms' reputational and marketing needs. Regulators should take another look at these programmes with a more critical eye, she argues. Topic: Representative Malcolm Kenyatta - Pennsylvania State Representative for the 181st district – joins Dr. Nii-Quartelai Quartey for a conversation about midterm elections and his latest efforts to call out MAGA Republicans. Bio: Representative Malcolm Kenyatta currently serves as Vice-Chair of the Philadelphia Delegation, as a member of the Governor's Task Force on Suicide Prevention, and on a host of committee leadership positions. As the first openly LGBTQ+ person of color and one of the youngest members elected to the PA General Assembly, he is deeply committed to creating an equitable and inclusive society. As a legislator, he has championed proposals to address generational poverty, raise the minimum wage, protect workers' rights, increase access to mental healthcare, stem the rise of gun violence, and protect our digital infrastructure. In 2016 and in 2020, he was elected as Delegate to the Democratic Convention, both times garnering the second-highest vote total of any delegate in the Commonwealth. He has also appeared on local and national media outlets to discuss systemic poverty, affordable education and childcare, and making government more accountable to citizens. He was the subject of an award-winning short documentary about his election run, ‘Going Forward' produced by Seven Knot Productions, which premiered on ‘The Atlantic Magazine Selects' in 2018. In 2020, he was chosen by President Joe Biden to give the keynote address at the Democratic National Convention along with a group of other ‘Rising Stars.' He was one of twenty Electoral College votes cast for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, in Harrisburg on December 14, 2020. Malcolm was deeply involved in fighting for his neighbors from a young age—as a community activist and junior block captain, a former board member of Smith Playground, and a leader of the Diversity and Inclusion Initiatives at the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce. Malcolm lives in the same neighborhood he grew up in North Philadelphia with his partner, Dr. Matt.

[6:15] Jefferson didn't realize marketing was a career until he explored his love for writing in the workplace. [10:10] Jefferson shares how he first began his career in diversity and inclusion. [12:05] When you come up with a problem, you need to come up with a solution. Recognizing this, Jefferson went back to school to learn more about HR logistics. [15:55] Why did Jefferson create his company, Breakfast Culture? [18:50] When you break bread with different cultures, you find commonalities. [20:50] Jefferson shares what Breakfast Culture's brand promise is and how they help organizations better their culture to be inclusive for everyone. [26:00] Actions speak louder than words. People notice when you're making an effort vs. trying to hit a quota. [30:25] When D&I is included in marketing strategy, revenue goes up. But why is that? Jefferson breaks this down. [35:00] No matter where you come from, we do come with certain privileges that we need to be aware of. [39:50] What works when it comes to D&I? And what doesn't work? Bradley received his Ph.D. in 20th Century US History with an Emphasis on the Black Experience from the University of Missouri-Columbia; an M.A. in the same from Washington State University; and, a B.A. in History from Gonzaga University. An educator at heart, Bradley's life ambition is to personally teach/mentor/inspire the young people who change the world for the better. He is authored several award-winning books including Upending the Ivory Tower, Harlem vs. Columbia University, and Alpha Phi Alpha: A Legacy of Greatness, The Demands of Transcendence. Generous with his time, Bradley frequently volunteers on and off campus. In the wake of the tragic events in Ferguson and St. Louis, he engaged in discussions with representatives from the US Department of Justice, Civil Rights Commission, and Department of Education. As a voice from the community, Bradley has appeared on BET, MSNBC, CNN, BBC, Al Jazeera, and in the New York Times. Dr. Bradley is an overall good brother. I have worked with him on in a professional since and when I lured away from St. Louis, Dr. Bradley was among a group of good friends that threw a send-off that will always be near and dear to my heart. Stefan Kollenberg is a Co-Founder of Crescendo. Crescendo delivers tailored microlearning for every employee inside of Slack. In our conversation, we discuss a number of themes. I really struggled to summarize this conversation but some of the things that stood out for me were:Using existing platforms to deliver a novel solution. Crescendo uses Slack to deliver micro-learning within organizations. I love this idea because it reminds me a past episode with Nick Scott, where he talked about trojan mice. Getting into large well secured spaces through tiny cracks instead of trying to get a trojan horse through the front gate. Their technology solution is so simple and leverages their other existing technology. Personal Learning Journey’s The ability to personalize learning is so important. When it comes to diversity, so many people are simply afraid to ask questions. Afraid to feel silly or look ignorant so they do not ask. In this platform, not only can people get customized learning journey’s they can do it over time. I am a big believer that change happens slowly, slowly and then suddenly. A long time frame of micro-learning versus one off workshops seems more lasting to me than what I have seen. Be vulnerable with your journey I admire Stefan’s willingness to talk about his struggles with addictions. It is important that we start to have these conversations in public. Stefan owns it and I admire that. He references something he calls radical ownership. In the conversation, I introduce two of my own favorite questions: How are you contributing to the problem? How are you contributing to the solution?Avoiding unproductive Conflict Like so many people Stefan has experienced toxic work cultures and has never wanted to go through that again. Part of his mission is to create spaces were people feel like they belong. Teams that are inclusive are a major part of the and his companies purpose is create more spaces were people belong. Disruption Metaphor Perhaps my favorite thing in this episode is Stefan’s metaphor for disruption. He describes disruption “like trying to change the current within a set of rapids. So you need to understand how the water flows and then set up interventions to create a path that is easier to take than the existing.” So simple, so visual and so great. It is all in the narrative Stefan referenced the work of Marshall Ganz from whom he learned a framework for storytelling. He describes it as follows: •Start of first with a story of self. Answer the question, why me? Why do you care about the cause or the work you do? Why do you care about the people you seek to serve. •Next follows the story of us. Why should we care about this issue as a group? How are we implicated? How would we benefit from solving the challenge or following the mission? •Finally, why now? Why is this relevant to do right now? In my own work we use a similar framework and I do like this some aspects of this framework. How It’s Possible to Talk About and Improve Diversity and Inclusion Diversity and inclusion sound like universally accepted ideas, but when we try to talk about how we fall short of them and how we can improve, they become two of the most controversial political sparks in the fire that rages around our American discourse. Many people believe they can’t speak the truth in their hearts, and so they see no path forward. At the USC Price School, we have been challenging this assumption and lifting up these voices to unfurl a path that had been blocked until only recently. In this episode, LaVonna B. Lewis tells the story of this new effort, known as the Initiative on Diversity, Inclusion, and Social Justice, and she implores us to follow the Price School’s lead in our everyday lives. Prof. Lewis is a teaching professor in the Sol Price of Public Policy at the University of Southern California, where she currently serves as Director of Diversity and Inclusion Initiatives. When we think of mentoring programs in the workplace, we tend to think of programs that carefully match mentors and mentees who share some or a lot of cultural similarities. But there’s another approach to mentor/mentee matching and that is identifying and pairing mentors and mentees who cross different cultures, such as mentors and mentees who come from different races, genders, ethnicities, religions, cultural backgrounds, socioeconomic backgrounds, sexual orientations, or nationality.
