One of the more successful imports in the 60s and 70s was The Avengers. An American version was bound to happen, and it did from the genius that was Quinn Martin. The leads were played by a name mentioned on this podcast a bit the last few weeks, Granville Van Dusen, and Morgan Fairchild. CBS took a pass, but the Avengers franchise (non-MCU version) lives on to this day.
TVC 689.2: Dore Page, author of Leslie Stevens Goes to Hollywood: Daystar Productions, Kate Manx and the Making of Private Property, talks to Ed and guest co-host Chuck Harter about Stoney Burke (ABC, 1962-1963), the “art house” look at the lives of 20th-century rodeo riders starring Jack Lord, Bruce Dern, and Warren Oates and produced by Leslie Stevens that ABC canceled after one season—despite garnering a 38 share—partly because the show was considered too ethereal for sponsors to get behind. Other topics this segment include how Warren Oates' character on Stoney Burke can be considered a forerunner to Angel Martin (the character that Stuart Margolin later played on The Rockford Files), and how Stevens came to pattern his independent production company, Daystar Productions, after Quinn Martin Productions once Stevens decided to focus on developing projects for television. Leslie Stevens Goes to Hollywood is available through McFarland Books.

As listeners may know, we love our Quinn Martin-produced shows. In this episode, we go back to one of his earliest crime drama efforts, with a lead who would be the biggest movie star by the end of the 1970s. Dan August had all the hallmarks of a great series, but there was one key item missing--viewership. Come for Burt Reynolds and non-comedic Norman Fell, stay for an astounding number of quality guest stars.
Big Brother season 26 houseguest Quinn Martin sits down with host Sharon Tharp for a post-season interview where he opens up about what went down in the jury house, breaks down his vote for Chelsie to win, updates us on where he stands with Leah and his other houseguests, and lots more. Quinn also ranks all of his final 2 alliance (there were a lot) and reveals what other reality competitions he'd be down to do.

TVC 626.6: Jon Burlingame, author of Music for Prime Time, talks to Ed about the three eras of music for television, and how the role of music supervisors on a television series has become particularly important today, when many shows use pre-existing songs to convey the theme and mood of a series. Music for Prime Time: A History of American Television Themes and Scoring is available in bookstores everywhere through Oxford University Press and Amazon.com. Jon Burlingame is also the producer, along with Doug Schwartz, of The Quinn Martin Collection, a three-volume CD collection released by La La Land Records. TVC 625.6: Jon Burlingame, author of Music for Prime Time, talks to Ed about the television work of renowned composers Jerry Goldsmith (Barnaby Jones, Police Story, The Loner) and Patrick Williams (The Streets of San Francisco, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, The Bob Newhart Show, Lou Grant, The Magician). Topics this segment include why Goldsmith was reluctant to score the pilot for Barnaby Jones (and how his theme for Barnaby, ironically, ended up being one of his best known TV compositions) and why no one was better than Williams at composing a jazz score for television.

TVC 483.4: Legendary actor, author, and activist Ed Asner (The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Lou Grant, Elf, Disney Pixar’s UP, Briarpatch) talks about the roles that actor Richard Crenna and The House on Greenapple Road—a made-for-TV movie produced by Quinn Martin—both played in helping him land his signature role of Lou Grant. Ed can currently be seen as town boss James Staghorne Sr. in Briarpatch, which airs Monday nights on USA Network. Ed’s memoir, SON OF A JUNKMAN: My Life from the West Bottoms of Kansas City to the Bright Lights of Hollywood, not only pays tribute to his cast members on The Mary Tyler Moore Show and Lou Grant, but reveals the person on whom Ed based his portrayal of Grant when he did the hour-long series. Son of a Junkman also discusses the challenges that Ed faced during his tenure as president of the Screen Actors Guild; the backlash he faced from the El Salvador controversy in 1982, and the effect that had not only on Lou Grant, but his acting career in general; and the influence that Ed’s father continues to have on his life today. You can count on one finger those industry professionals who have transitioned from a career as a stuntman climbing the faces of Mount Rushmore in Hitchcock’s North by Northwest to that of Hollywood’s “go-to” television director. That man is Ray Austin, whose work as a director includes episodes on every hit TV series from the 1960s to the present day. In this incredibly entertaining conversation with Bob & Suzanne, Ray shares intimate stories of his wartime childhood and the events leading to his lifelong relationship with legendary film star Cary Grant. You’ll be infused with Ray’s unmatched energy and work ethic as he recalls his early conversation with Alfred Hitchcock that revealed his own ambition to someday replace Hitchcock in the director’s chair. Ray created and coordinated the amazing stunts for such epics as Cleopatra and Spartacus, and worked as an actor in classic films like The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner. More acting followed in TV series like The Saint and The Avengers, which only whetted his appetite for calling the shots from behind the camera. You’ll hear how Ray’s athletic prowess and charismatic personality were matched by a keen writing ability that soon won him his first directing gigs. The life and career of Ray Austin—with more than 300 directing credits ranging from The Saint and Black Beauty to Magnum, P.I., The Six Million Dollar Man, Highlander, Spenser: for Hire, and The New Zorro—and with a pantheon of show business celebrity friendships ranging from Cary Grant to TV’s iconic producer Quinn Martin--is nearly the stuff of fiction. Today, Ray—the bona fide holder of an historic feudal Irish title as The Baron Raymond John DeVere-Austin—is the renowned author of Find Me a Spy, Catch Me a Traitor as well as the Beauford Sloan Mystery Series, a page-turning trilogy which includes The Eagle Heist, Dead Again, and Your Turn to Die (all great reads now available at Amazon.com). The story of Ray Austin’s life and career is an inspiring and compelling piece of Hollywood history, the likes of which will never be seen again. It’s a conversation you don’t want to miss!
