Guest Bio: Jena Holliday is the author of Sacred Creativity and a full-time artist, author, entrepreneur, and storyteller. She is the creator and owner of Spoonful of Faith, an illustration and design studio. With just a bit of faith, she walked away from her mainstream marketing job to embrace her passion for art. What started as a hobby eventually evolved into a full-time commitment to spread kindness and hope through her artwork and words. That commitment blossomed into a blog and shop, aptly named Spoonful of Faith, and has thus become not only a successful business but a cultural beacon. Jena has been featured on Good Morning America, Ebony, Essence, People, Nylon, The Wall Street Journal, Yahoo, Artful Living, and many more prominent outlets. Show Summary: What gifts do you think God has blessed you with? Do you see creativity in your gifts? Oftentimes we neglect to notice the diverse ways that God has blessed each of us with creativity. It does not always have to be writing, drawing, painting, or doing a craft. Jena Holliday has found that being creative can grant us a different type of connection with the Lord. Join hosts Elisa Morgan and Eryn Eddy Adkins as they learn about sacred creativity with Jena during this God Hears Her conversation. Notes and Quotes: “Why are you asking everyone else where to go, who to be, and what do except the One who created you?” —Jena Holliday “God didn't make a mistake when He made us who we are. It wasn't by chance; it wasn't a coincidence. It was on purpose. That really helped me to step into the fullness of the voice that the Lord had given me.” —Jena Holliday “What I have learned is that there is a hunger to see the different ways that the image of God is reflected on the earth. It's cool to be in this position as an artist and illustrator because I have the unique role of creating something in a visual way that doesn't require words. It was always important to me that I showcase different women and different images and illustrations of people because I wanted them to feel seen. I wanted people to know that they were loved, heard, and that their stories matter.” —Jena Holliday “You should use [your gift] as a way to honor the Gift Giver, the One who has given it to you. We all have a corner of this earth where we get to use our gifts. Whatever God does to multiply it, that's Him—that's not on us. That's not our responsibility.” —Jena Holliday “If you have something that God has given you and it's still neatly wrapped in a box, I think that's an invitation to open it up, spend a little time with it, and see what He does with it.” —Jena Holliday “Everyone should take the risk to use the gifts that God has given them.” —Jena Holliday “The way that Jesus loves us is so deep is that He will come after you. He will come find you again and guide you back to where He would like you to be and you get to keep walking forward together.” —Jena Holliday Related Episodes: Ep 141: Rethinking Creativity with Rachel Marie Kang: https://godhearsher.org/podcast/rethinking-creativity/ Ep 163: Mindful Creativity with Anh Lin: https://godhearsher.org/podcast/mindful-creativity/ Links: Jena's book Sacred Creativity: https://www.amazon.com/Sacred-Creativity-Inspiration-Reclaim-God-Given/dp/0593581474 Jena Holliday's Website: https://www.spoonfuloffaith.com/ Jena's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/aspoonfuloffaith/ God Hears Her website: https://go.odb.org/ghh191 Watch the episode on the God Hears Her YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/@GodHearsHerODBM God Hears Her email sign-up: https://go.odb.org/ghh-sign-upsfmc191 Subscribe on iTunes! https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/god-hears-her-podcast/id1511046507?utm_source=applemusic&utm_medium=godhearsher&utm_campaign=podcast Shop God Hears Her books and resources: https://go.odb.org/ghh-shop191 Elisa's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/elisamorganauthor/ Eryn's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/eryneddy/ Vivian's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/vivmabuni/ Our Daily Bread Ministries website: https://go.odb.org/odbm191

"Come, sister. Come to the altar. Let church be now — on your computer (or phone) and in the comments. Let every typed word be the casting of your cares upon the Lord and into caring community. If you're carrying a burden, relinquish it. If you're worried about a loved one, say no more and simply speak their name. If you're in need of provision, make it known."Leave a comment for Rachel: https://incourage.me/?p=252522--For moments of bite-sized encouragement, the new DaySpring Daily Devotional Bible for Moms is just the ticket. "God's goodness is too good not to share. Currently, Di Fara Pizza has 53K followers on Instagram, 4.2K reviews on Google, and 4.1K reviews (with 2.5K photos posted) on Yelp. Di Fara Pizza has been featured in a variety of YouTube videos and articles. Many pizza makers in New York City name Dom, and his signature style, as inspiration for their pizzerias. Affectionately cherished, it goes to show — when something, or Someone, is proven tried and true, others will unapologetically share the good news."Leave a comment for Rachel: https://incourage.me/?p=250274--For moments of bite-sized encouragement, the new DaySpring Daily Devotional Bible for Moms is just the ticket. "At Christmastime, and at all times, we believe and bear witness to the truth that Jesus makes glorious the impossible gloom. Through song and deed, we declare that Jesus makes miraculous the mundane and saves the wretched sinner. "As with any ordinary day, God is the One who makes holy the messy, the mundane, the magical, and the mystery. The only right way to go about the holidays is the same way we go about any other ordinary day — we invite God into our every moment. As with any other ordinary day, we make a humble home for God in the messy, mundane manger of our hearts. In our rising and our falling, in our coming and our going, in our laughing and our weeping, in our celebrating and our seeking, we focus on God, forever."Leave a comment for Rachel: https://incourage.me/?p=249551--Celebrate gratitude this season with DaySpring's inspirational décor, perfect for Thanksgiving gatherings! "God is good, whether we are in plenty or in want. No one may know what it costs you to set that table. But God knows. No one may know just how precise you need to be in your planning and purchases, or the sacrifice of your time, or the earnest hours of work you put in. But God knows. . .God knows and God sees every sacrifice. He sees every swipe of the card. He sees every handwritten check, event cent saved, every coupon collected, every debt collector dialed."Leave a comment for Rachel: https://incourage.me/?p=248756--The fall issue of DaySpring's Everyday Faith magazine is now available! "What I'm really waiting for is a home that can't be built with brick and beams. Jesus knows what it's like to have no home, no place to lay his head, no permanent place of peace. He knows, full well, about persecution, poverty, and placelessness. Jesus knows the transient life, living from bags and boxes, so to speak. How to be in a place and, mysteriously, how to pass through it. How to be present in the pain of this world and, yet, how to press forward for the sake of the Father's plan.Jesus lived to serve, not to stay and settle. And I wonder, am I (are we) in the world to be settled or to be servants? Are we bending with and bowing to the will of the Father? Going where He goes. Partnering with Him, place to place to place."Leave Rachel some words of encouragement: https://incourage.me/?p=240761--Through August 31st, DaySpring is offering up to 35% off on select back-to-school items. "The Holy Spirit is how we will do every hard and holy thing. There won't always be a roadmap or guidebook giving all the right answers. "We are worn out. We are tapped. We are tired of and from watching the news and waiting for God to usher in salvation and solutions. We are holding our collective breath, barely awake and hardly aware of our need for rest — true rest. In the quiet moments, when I sit in silence long enough to let the truth be loud, I can hear the holy whisper. And maybe you do, too? I need Christ more than I need coffee."Leave a comment for Rachel: https://incourage.me/?p=238494--Encourage all the moms in your life with heartfelt messages of God's love! Welcome to part four of our four part series, Advice From a Woman. In this episode, Heather sits down with Rachel Marie Kang and talks about the relatively invisible matter of little losses. Life is full of love, but it is also full of loss. Like paper cuts to the heart, every big and seemingly insignificant loss--the loss of friendships, faith, dreams, health, community, and everything in between--grieves us more than we think it will, and often more than we let on. Rachel Marie Kang invites you to see and be seen in the midst of your sorrow, your suffering--your story. Heather also sits down with our social media expert, Brady Shearer, to talk through what tips and best practices he would recommend before someone starts a Youtube channel. Brady Shearer is the director of Pro Church Tools, a company that trains churches and leaders on how to navigate the biggest communication shift in 500 years. "Beloved, when will we ever not need to be reminded that our only confidence in life is Christ? When will we ever not need the reminder that Christ cares for us? Deeply, daily, we always need the reminder that our hope and help come from Christ alone. Jesus cares about saving our souls and He cares about soothing our sorrows. Jesus cares about forgiving our sins and He cares about making our daily provisions. By the blood of Christ, we are covered, taken under the shield and shelter of our great God — the forgiver of all sins and the giver of all gifts."Leave a comment for Rachel: https://incourage.me/?p=238000--Getting ready for Easter? We experience big and little losses all the time. A friend moves away. An opportunity passes you by. A relationship ends. Learning how to recognize and honor the losses we all experience can become a beautiful part of life, leading to more kindness, self-compassion, and connection. But we don't often talk about our losses, let alone how to honor them. That's why I loved this conversation with Rachel Marie Kang about creating space to honor loss. She is the author of the brand new book, The Matter of Little Losses, a beautiful journey through how to honor the big and little losses in your life. Here's what we cover: 1. The difference between loss and grief (2:09) 2. Different types of loss (7:22) 3. How we process loss as children (14:23) 4. Examples of “little” losses (22:46) 5. The most important way to parent kids through losses (31:04) 6. Rachel's 3 steps for tending losses each day (35:25) 7. The thing we want most to help us through loss (39:59) 8. Why honoring loss brings hope (47:25) Get The Matter of Little Losses here. Find a full transcript and list of resources from this episode here. Do you have questions for Dr. Alison? Leave them here. "God is with you in your grief, giving space for sorrow, welcoming you as you slowly find your way. He greets you in your grief before going on to glory, to heaven. He waits with you as you grope and groan for words that give language to loss—all those little and large. He stops and he stoops, lays low, right there with you in the suspension of all things. He blesses you . . . even in your brokenness."Leave a comment for Rachel and enter to WIN her new book: https://incourage.me/?p=237271--It's not too late to get your Word of the Year! "Sometimes . . . we just need someone to acknowledge that the ache is real. As the holidays come rushing in, so do the memories that remind me of my grandfather, and my cousin, and my eccentric friend — all of them gone too soon. So this holiday season, I won't fight the grief. I will hold hope in one hand and heartache in the other. This holiday season I will choose to believe that our tears matter to God, the One who cradles all our little losses and greatest griefs. If you need the same, I hope you do the same. For the empty chair at your table, know that Christ dines with you and dwells within you — even and especially in this."Leave a comment for Rachel: https://incourage.me/?p=235920--Let DaySpring help you prepare your heart and home for Thanksgiving! "Only in Christ, will we ever be satisfied and fulfilled. The only secret to being everything and everywhere all at once is realizing that, only in Christ, will we ever be satisfied and fulfilled. Only in Him will we experience the greatest depth and width and height of life. Only in Him can we be everything we were ever created to be. It's no secret and it's no superpower. To be with Him is to be everywhere we ever need to be. To be known by Him is to see we are everything we ever need to be."Leave a comment for Rachel: --The fall issue of DaySpring's Everyday Faith Magazine is out on newsstands! "I need the fresh reminder of God's mercy right now. Looking back, I now see that God's unfailing love didn't just come to me every morning, it carried me through every night. His mercy was the breath in my lungs even though my body was weak. His mercy was love in my life even though I felt lost and alone. His mercy was a feast for my soul, sustaining me though I ached and starved for my life to change. And if I held onto Him then, I could hold onto Him now, heavy-laden and heaving and all. I can hold onto Him this minute (and the next . . . and the next), never needing to hold out for the morning to wash me anew. I can recall His mercies to my mind now, right here."Leave a comment for Rachel and be entered to WIN a copy of the fall Everyday Faith Magazine! https://incourage.me/?p=234533--Whether navigating political or religious differences, dealing with toxic people or our own unforgiveness, our book Come Sit with Me tackles the struggles no one really wants to talk about. Ecclesiastes, that ancient book of wisdom, tells us there is nothing better than for us to be happy and do good...to eat, drink, and find satisfaction in our work when we can. Today, I talk with Rachel Marie Kang, author of the book Let There Be Art to talk about the holy practice of noticing beauty and joy. This is something I write about in a mini-chapter of my book entitled: "A Blessing: Delight." Rachel and I discuss how the formula that promises happiness can sometimes distract us from noticing the simple blessings that exist all around us. She offers some practical steps for being present with God even in the seemingly mundane and ordinary.
"God is the only one who can catch and care for our every wish, dream, want, need, joy, heartbreak, fear, and tear. When I realize I can't meet the wants, wishes, and needs of others, I am learning to, instead, release them to the only One who can. This looks less like bending myself into impossible shapes to save the day and more like praying for the people and places I care for."Leave a comment for Rachel: https://incourage.me/?p=233577--Bible study starts this week! Today, we're thrilled to welcome new voices to the (in)courage podcast! We thank Rachel Marie Kang for sharing her voice as narrator with us the past few months, and we welcome Anna E. Rendell as our new narrator.--"Goodness is already on the way. Psalm 23:6 says that goodness and mercy will follow us every single day. The Hebrew word used for follow, radaph, means to pursue or to chase. Far from a casual stroll, this is an all-out sprint, a guarantee that every day, on every single page of the story, goodness is pounding the pavement, coming for us over and over again. We may not see it yet. It might look like fear is following behind, it might feel like worry is weighing down, or seem like pain or sadness will get the last word . . . but the countdown is on. The party hats have been purchased. The celebration is certain."Leave a comment for Kaitlyn: https://incourage.me/?p=233298--In our divisive and unforgiving world, we need mercy more than ever. "I take all of my feelings, disappointment, fear, and pain and I lay them on the altar of God. I'm so tempted to become bitter and jaded and offended. I'm tempted to avoid those who have hurt me. But this would take me down the broad road of destruction. These responses would give a foothold to the enemy. This is not the way of Jesus. His narrow road is found by few. Let's release any expectations we have of ourselves about how many friends we make, the frequency of social events on our calendar, or the number of likes we get on social media. "While our circumstances may be different, our human need for connection and our reliance on Jesus for everything doesn't shift. This is what I keep thinking about: when we slow down enough to listen, the Silent Generation has a whole lot to say about pace and commitment and kindness. They have seen so much and yet we hardly ever ask them to give us advice or insight. We often just wave to them at church on a Sunday and then go to lunch with our friends that are our age, scrolling on our phones and hanging out with people facing the same challenges we are. And when we do this? We miss out on a whole lot."Leave a comment for Melissa: https://incourage.me/?p=232586--Graduation season is here! Are you Ready to Bless the Grads in Your Life? "God alone can rewire the rhythm in my soul. In the rare moments of quiet and calm, before I find myself reaching and rushing to the next thing — or the next place to be, or meal to make, or email to answer, or checkbox to check — I'm beginning to sense the Holy Spirit's hand on my heart, leading me to believe that He alone can rewire the rhythm in my soul. I sense Him whispering to me, telling me to stall and stay a while longer, to tolerate the quiet and spend my spare moments standing in awe of Him and all the work that He is doing."Leave a comment for Rachel: https://incourage.me/?p=232475--Stay organized and inspired every day of the year with an (in)courage Planner from DaySpring! It feels great to be funny in the moment, but specific encouragement will be remembered for years to come. Today is the day to make the change. "With every breath, we have the opportunity to say words that tear down, or words that build up. Nobody is perfect. But with how we talk to others, we can show them that the goodness of God is worth discovering and enjoying. We can allow them to have a taste of God's kindness by how kind we are to them."Leave a comment + enter to WIN the new book, Cultivating Kindness, by Dr. Tony Evans: https://incourage.me/?p=232391--Stay organized and inspired every day of the year with an (in)courage Planner from DaySpring! "Ours is a story where resurrection is already and always on the way. I don't see it yet, at least not in this particular middle place. I'm still watching, still waiting, still begging and believing that the page will turn. What I know, though, is that Sunday is always coming. Today, I remind myself: We have a God who turned the very worst of all days into a day known around the world as 'Good.'"Leave a comment for Kaitlyn: https://incourage.me/?p=232400--Stay organized and inspired every day of the year with an (in)courage Planner from DaySpring! "God is not surprised when we fall apart. He isn't shocked or dismayed when we get a little or a lot messy. He doesn't demand that we get our act together before coming to Him. And God doesn't run the other way when we feel like it's all too much — or when we are what feels like too much."Leave a comment for Mary: https://incourage.me/?p=231846--This Easter, prepare your heart and home with Simply Jesus – a new keepsake magazine from DaySpring. "God wastes not one drop of your difficulty. God is renewing your strength and vision day by day, season by season. He is not idle but actively moving in your life so that you may know Him better. "Jesus meets us inside the walls of our churches and outside of them on smoke breaks. Church isn't always a sermon. Sometimes it's a smoke break with two friends whose lives have looked nothing like mine. Jesus was right there – inside our church service and outside too. Each of us belongs to Him."Leave a comment for Aliza: https://incourage.me/?p=231714 --This Easter, prepare your heart and home with Simply Jesus – a new keepsake magazine from DaySpring. "As real as our challenges are, heaven must become even more real. That pain you feel? You're homesick. But that's okay, because to be homesick only confirms that the best is yet to come. Go ahead and dream, even while you weep. One day soon, you will finally be home. "We live in a dance of yesterday and today, of grief and gratitude. We do not have to pick one. There's a sisterhood of gratitude and grief, of death and resurrection. I find both in the strands of my midlife hair. I look at a section of still-jet-black mixed with lightened pieces and bright, almost-translucent-white strands and feel an ache for what was and a thanks for who I am becoming with age, change, and redemption."Leave a comment for Tasha: https://incourage.me/?p=231702--This Easter, prepare your heart and home with Simply Jesus – a new keepsake magazine from DaySpring. "It's hard to feel at rest when you're tangled up by invisible strings. God works in our hearts when we take our worked-up soul and bear it all before Him. He knows it all anyway. "Jesus accepted help, so we can and should too. Could Jesus have gotten Himself together on His own? Yes, but God lovingly sent the angels to minister to Jesus anyway. For all the times we pray and ask God for help, He often sends it through others. The hard part is letting down our guardrails of pride, fear, or embarrassment to receive it."Leave a comment on today's post and be entered to win a copy of Everyday Faith Spring Magazine! https://incourage.me/?p=231488--The spring issue of DaySpring's Everyday Faith magazine is now on newsstands! Today, we're thrilled to welcome new voices to the (in)courage podcast! We thank Grace P. Cho for sharing her gifts with us this past year, and we welcome Rachel Marie Kang as our new narrator. --"Love that comes from weakness and emptiness might be the purest kind of love I can offer. When I think about love this way, it makes the cross mean so much more. Christ didn't die from a place of strength, but from a place of humility. He didn't die going out swinging. He died spread out and surrendered. He didn't die from a place of fullness. He died empty and poured out. God emptied Himself to be with us. We empty ourselves to be with others. Empty is enough."Leave a comment for Anjuli: https://incourage.me/?p=231506--The spring issue of DaySpring's Everyday Faith magazine is now on newsstands! Author and creator Rachel Marie King joins us today to talk about how one can both create and partake in the creations of others when something in our bodies has made the act of creating difficult, what it looks like to fight back against an illness or pain stealing the childlike faith and joy that Jesus invites us into as followers of his Kingdom, and what the practical steps are to both accept the limitations of our bodies while also giving ourselves permission to create, fail, and enjoy life in new ways. I need the fresh reminder of God's mercy right now. Looking back, I now see that God's unfailing love didn't just come to me every morning, it carried me through every night. Perhaps in no other way do we more vibrantly reflect our Creator than with our creativity, whether through music, writing, hospitality, photography, painting, design, comedy, dance, or other form of artistic expression. On Tuesday's Mornings with Eric and Brigitte, Rachel Marie Kang, writer, author and Founder of The Fallow House, shares with us that our art is not peripheral to life--it is at the very heart of why we exist. Our art and creativity are like light that pushes back the darkness in our lives, and there is beauty, healing, and hope that shines through when we finally take hold of what's in front of us.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Make Beautiful Things - Finding Joy & Purpose in Our Work, Relationships & Communities
Do you know what separates us (Humans) from Computers, AI and animals? One of the things is our ability to be creative. We all have the ability to be creative and when we regularly tap into our creative genius we are more innovative, better problem solvers and more fulfilled. We are born with curiosity and creativity but as we get older many people don't keep exercising those muscles and we can find ourselves not learning, being curious or innovating as much as we could be. Today I talk about the why we need to flex our creative muscle and consider how our work might change in the next 1-3 years and if we are continously learning and innovating and why we need to be creative- to use our hands and minds to make something- because we were made to do so and without some outlet we often feel less enjoyment and fulfillment in life. Learn 3 ways you can tap into your creativity. Quick Note: I am going to shift to releasing 1 episode a week typically on Wednesdays for the remainder of the season and wrap up season 2 before the holidays. Episode 22 of the She is Kindred podcast is a perfect launch into this month's theme: “The Working Woman.” Host Britt Nikel Smith chats with writer Rachel Marie Kang about pursuing dreams and how we can practice presence in the middle of them. Their conversation leans into building a life that focuses less on “what's next” and more on “what's now.” Can we find purpose in all that we do? And can we begin to believe that even the smallest things hold significance and purpose? Rachel believes creativity can and does thrive in the every day and encourages listeners to release the expectations of perfection and practice presence instead. I'm so honored to introduce you to my beautiful, poetic, passionate, friend Rachel Marie Kang. Rachel has been a safe place for me to ask questions and process so much of what I am learning about racism, history, white privilege and so many other aspects of racism and reconciliation. Rachel and I decided to record so you could hear her powerful story and perspective- as a woman of color, as a mom, and as a believer and Jesus-lover. She shares personal stories, practical next steps, and advice for teaching the next generation in order to bring justice and racial reconciliation to our black brothers and sisters. You don't want to miss this episode. I can confidently say it is the most important one I've done to date.
