Leon Medica, bassist and producer of LeRoux, co-founded the band in 1977.  Throughout the years the band was featured on music television shows including Solid Gold, The Midnight Special and Don Kirshner's Rock Concert.  They had 7 songs land on Billboard's Top 100 chart.  Leon won an American Music Award for producing a song from the movie "Dirty Dancing" and also is a Grammy nominated musician who played on an album with blues great Tab Benoit.  This tribute to Leon, who passed away on June 9, 2024, includes our interview with him from July of 2008 which touched on LeRoux, the Louisiana rock sound and LeRoux's album, Ain't Nothing But A Gris Gris.  In our showcase segment, we feature Leon's friend and frontman for Wet Willie, Jimmy Hall.  His latest album is Ready Now.  Sounds of the deep south on this special edition of the CAT!

The Joint Readiness Training Center is pleased to present the forty-second episode to air on ‘The Crucible - The JRTC Experience.' Hosted by CPT Nicolaus Rohrbough is the battalion assistant S-3 operations observer-coach-trainer for TF-4 (CAV Squadron) on behalf of the Commander of Operations Group. Today's guest is the Commander of 3-89th Cavalry Squadron, 3rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, LTC Ryan Nugent as well as one of his troop's executive officers, 1LT Aiden Hutchinson   The 3rd Squadron, 89th Cavalry Regiment draws its lineage from a World War II tank destroyer battalion. In an interesting bit of trivia, the IBCT was for over a decade known as the 4th IBCT of 10th Mountain, but when the Army redesigned division for the “Army of 2020” concept, they became 3rd IBCT of 10th Mountain. (The “Spartan” Brigade was inactivated in August 2014.) They have the Hollywood call-sign of “Slugger” or “Patriot Recon” and the motto of “Ready Now,” while the IBCT has the call-sign “Patriots” and the motto of “Forged for War.”   In this episode we discuss the role of the cavalry squadron in large scale combat operations, supporting both the division as the primary unit of action as well as the BCT's close fight. The CAV squadron was very aggressive with their employment of small unmanned aircraft systems to further extend their reach while dominating the transparent battlefield. Taking lessons learned from both the Nagorno-Karabakh War and the ongoing Russo-Ukraine Conflict, the squadron trained their troops to deploy their sUAS in support of all operations, but especially while halted and dismounted to ensure that they make contact with the enemy first via a sensor package of their drones. A best practice for their squadron was the establishment of a UAS master trainer to ensure that at each echelon they had depth of the personnel trained on each applicable UAS as well as helping each troop commander build their training plans. The squadron also worked with their MICO to incorporate signals intelligence teams and electronic warfare teams into all major troop level training events. The NCOs are the commanders' “linebackers” with the goal of maintaining good order and discipline of the formation. As leaders, we have to strive to shift our formations from the garrison mindset to a “combat” mindset focused on lethality and overall readiness. We have to re-hone the edge of the NCO corps to be much more focused on direct leadership instead of the more passive, non-confrontational approach while still being professional, especially for our junior NCOs. Quite possibly the nicest guys I've ever met … the dudes from the NJ band Wake Up Paradise stopped by the APV Studio recently for a podcast and acoustic session. In his role, Garrett has been intimately involved in implementing the “Ready Now” program which helps student athletes craft and manage their personal brands on Social Media. It is the first ever NCAA program to embrace social media and incorporate the development of branding into the life skills training and support that students receive. Garrett shares his thoughts on this new approach to training college athletes on using social media—specifically how instead of telling students what not to do, they are training them on best practices, which are applicable to all influencers. Nebraska Athletics recently partnered with Opendorse to create the first-ever program designed to help individual student athletes build their personal brands. The program, being called Ready Now, will afford all 650-plus Nebraska student athletes the opportunity to improve their personal brands on social media so they can maximize their earning potential once NIL legislation is ultimately enacted. I wrote about this program on Forbes when it was first announced, but in this episode I was able to chat with Opendorse co-founder and CEO Blake Lawrence about what his company currently does with professional athletes and how his platform will benefit student athletes as NIL legislation is enacted. We discussed how Opendorse currently works with its approximately 75 collegiate partners and how the Nebraska partnership takes that to the next level. Surgery... While in most cases when faced with this decision it is based out necessity. There are always risks and changes as a result of an invasive treatment like this.. But just imagine, finding yourself in the situation that your only child at two-months-old is required to undergo one of the most dangerous types of surgery? How would, How could, process this? Elizabeth, lived this moment by moment for years. She chose to be a guest to use her story to strengthen families walking through a medical crisis. I know we say it often... But this is a MUST listen! You can't prepare for a crisis but she is a testimony that you can survive it without losing your mind.  More about Elizabeth:  Multi-talented, singer, songwriter, and aspiring hair dresser LaRay was born into music. She grew up in South Berkeley California in a family that lived for music and was the one person besides her mother (Ms. Pam) blessed with the gift of voice. LaRay was also given the gift of range. At the age of 5, LaRay and her two sisters (Nichol and Jaye‘) recorded their first tape with their father (G), compiled of childhood playground rhymes like humpty dumpty. LaRays voice started to develop.  She took this time to sing in the youth choir with her sisters until her best friend and grandfather (KAM JAM) who had previously had a record label, took her and her sisters to sing karaoke. This was a test to see how she would do outside of family and outside of church… LaRay passed. Unaware of the talent she truly possessed, LaRay became fascinated with learning to play the piano. Her father who plays keyboards for Special Request took her under his wing and she made him a promise “one day daddy ima’ be better than you”. LaRay still practices daily to live up to that promise. LaRay continued singing in church, also sang for her high school and at local community events. Currently at the ripe age of 31, LaRay is not only enrolled in college taking a double major: cosmetology and music. she is very involved in church, in her community and works with kids at the “Young Adult Project” (YAP). A recreation center she has roots in, that has supported her career from the start. Her biggest supporter of all is her 5-year-old niece (Poopy) who sings along with all her songs while she practices. LaRay's inspirations start at home and go on to include Beyonce, Destiny’s Child, Mariah Carey, Regina Bell, Anita Baker and many others. She is motivated and determined. In this episode of the Blanchard LeaderChat podcast we speak with Mark Miller, Vice President of High Performance Leadership for Chick-fil-A and author of the new book, Leaders Made Here. For Miller, growing great leaders wasn’t an option at Chick-fil-A.  Accelerated growth was putting a strain on leadership bench strength. “We needed more leaders faster. We couldn’t just overload existing leaders. We knew we would get to the breaking point.” Miller discusses the journey Chick-fil-A took in developing a leadership culture—where people are routinely developed. “You have to start by understanding the importance of leadership and defining what leadership means in your organization. In most organizations you’ll find a wide variety of different answers.  You have to forge a consensus.” But that’s not the end of it says Miller.  Next, you must train existing and emerging leaders to establish that common language of leadership. Part of that includes giving emerging leaders a chance to practice.  As Miller explains, “Most of what we know about leading we learn from actually doing it.” “It’s easy to always give tough projects to existing leaders—but you have to be willing to give emerging leaders a chance.  Who are the less seasoned, less experienced, emerging leaders who we could provide with an opportunity?” Miller also discusses measurement and metrics including a leadership bench strength rating. He recommends using a technique showing how ready people are for their next leadership assignment using a scale of Ready Now; Ready in 1-3 years; or Good in Place.
