Neither a documentary on the films of David Lynch nor a film about the man we knew as David Lynch.  But an account of a young man who through circumstance and single-minded drive, would find himself in and construct just the sort of environment that could form a David Lynch.  Directors Olivia Neergaard-Holm, Jon Nguyen, and Rick Barnes put the camera on a man making art and a microphone on a man looking back at his early life.  And they leave it up to us to make connections between the two. Robert Day joined the U.S. Marine Corps just a few months after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Soon he was being transformed into a Marine at Parris Island, and, less than three years later, he would be part of some of the most intense combat of the Iraq War during the Second Battle of Fallujah in November and December 2004. He served as a machine gunner with the 1st Battlion/8th Marines. In this edition of "Veterans Chronicles," Sgt. Day takes on a quiet first deployment to Iraq, into the much more intense training for the second tour in Iraq, and into the gritty details of the urban combat in Fallujah when his platoon returned to the war.Day explains the tactical approach in Fallujah, what it was like firing at the enemy while being fired upon, his role during the house-to-house combat throughout Fallujah, the mindset needed for a relentlessly intense battle that raged for weeks, and how his platoon dealt with the loss of one of its most beloved members. It's a fascinating, detailed, and candid account of some of the toughest fighting of the Iraq War.

If there's one thing the public cannot reach agreement on it's what was the greatest British black & white Peter Sellers film of all time. There is obviously a strong groundswell of support for that popular favourite, I'm All Right Jack, while trendier types (sneering metropolitan elites looking down on the hoi polloi) insist that Only Two Can Play is far superior. Others argue for The Naked Truth, with some justification, while a handful of nitwits push for The Ladykillers, completely misunderstanding the notion of 'black & white' as opposed to 'colour'. However, they are all wrong. Sensible people everywhere acknowledge that the correct answer is Two Way Stretch from 1960, a film which has only gained in popularity over the years. Directed by Robert Day from an original screenplay by John Warren & Len Heath (and with additional dialogue by Alan Hackney, writer of I'm All Right Jack), the working title for the film was Nothing Barred and it clearly provided inspiration for one of the greatest British sitcoms of all time - Porridge. It reunites Sellers with his 'Jack co-stars Irene Handl and Liz Fraser and teams him up with David Lodge and Bernard Cribbins, but the film's most memorable performance is delivered by the peerless Lionel Jeffries as Chief Officer Crout. Joining Tyler this week to do a bit of stir is returning guest Jeremy Limb - musician, actor and one third of The Trap.

Robert has recently retired from his management responsibilities in the Government of Canada where he spent more than 20 years in fisheries and oceans management, which included a lot of environmental and climate change discussions, many with international dimensions. Now that he's retired, he's continued to keep his hand in international fisheries discussions and also moved the needle on other activities dear to his heart – activities that also make a positive difference in our world, such as organizing his community's Audubon Christmas Bird Count. Host John Failla is joined by Evergy's Robert Day, Executive Director of Origination, and Grant Wilkerson, Director of New Business Development to discuss how Evergy is responding to the unique needs of large power users in both regulated and deregulated markets for renewable energy. Listen to learn more about their inside perspective. You will want to hear this episode if you are interested in... Who are Robert and Grant? [01:42] What do customers want in regulated markets? [04:09] The background of Evergy [07:00] Evergy's renewables in regulated markets [08:37] Customer response to tariffs [14:49] Evergy's unregulated market projects [17:09] The future of Evergy [21:37] Who is Evergy? Evergy was created three years ago from the merger of Kansas City Power and Light and Westar Energy. This consolidation made sense as a way to bring a better product to their customers, allowing them to provide less expensive long-term costs to the service areas they had in common.  The Evergy Energy Partners division of Evergy looks at how to optimize assets for their customers and deal with the integrated market in a way that best performs for these customers. Their efforts are focused on doing what they can to push forward for the customer and provide the best products available. Unregulated markets Evergy has had several wholesale customers who want renewable products. One action they've taken for these customers is to aggregate a wind farm, bringing togethers six customers who signed up for the facility. This resulted in a fully subscribed wind farm at a price the companies were willing to pay, thus giving them access to a renewable resource at a competitive price. Another way Evergy has reached unregulated markets is through selling solar arrays to various companies. Baldwin City, Kansas has had a solar array online for about two years, allowing them to provide solar power to their community. Evergy is constructing another solar array in West Plains, Missouri, which will be completed in the Spring of 2022. Another array that is being completed within the month is located in Paragould, Arkansas. Additionally, wholesale customers have approached Evergy for help with renewables. The future of Evergy Energy Partners Technology is changing dramatically and quickly. Solar itself has come a long way from when it was introduced to where it is now. Now the question is how to integrate technologies. In the next couple of years, demand response will play a significant role in integrating the renewable energy stream. The customers can control some of the demand response and help integrate renewable energies into their portfolios. Customers are going to play a vital role in the future of renewables as they integrate technologies and make progress happen. Relatively simple actions such as integrating EV charging stations into the portfolio are moving in the right direction. Everyone brings something to the table and will help figure out how to make everything work together. They'll figure out new technologies like hydrogen fuel generation and green ammonia. At some point, the resource will be found that provides what the grid needs. One of the biggest challenges in renewables is a safety net, and customers will play a crucial role in creating that technology. Robert Day, Director, Autonomous Vehicles, Arm joined Grayson Brulte on The Road To Autonomy Podcast to discuss why the world runs on Arm.The conversation begins with Robert discussing Arm's partnership approach and how over 190 billion devices around the world contain Arm-based chips. It's really all about the partnership approach. It's all about working with our silicon partners and giving them the right technology to allow them to address the different markets they want to put their silicon into. – Robert DayFocusing on Arm's partnership approach, Robert discusses how Arm was able to ship a record 7.3 billion Arm-based chips in Q4 2020 as the global markets faced a supply chain crunch. Our partners like to work with us because we are continuously innovating. – Robert DayShifting the conversation to autonomous vehicles, Grayson asks Robert when and why did Arm first enter the autonomous vehicle industry. Arm has been in the automotive industry for a long time. Building upon this experience, Arm expanded into the autonomous vehicle industry as companies prepare for the mass deployment of autonomous vehicles as they will need great silicon. As autonomous vehicle companies such as Cruise actively prepare for the commercialization of their service, Grayson asks Robert if custom chip architectures are currently being developed for autonomous vehicles.Whether people will develop custom silicon to do it, I do not know. As they get closer to deployment, it's what is available. What is out there? It costs a lot of money to develop a custom chip. If our silicon partners have the right SOCs based on our technology, they will probably just pick those up off the shelves. There might be certain applications, there might be certain parts of the vehicle that may be doing sensor intelligence where they might want to do some of their own silicon. At the moment you have to get closer to the actual deployment before it will be obvious which way people will go. – Robert DayTaking a look at the autonomous vehicle industry as a whole, Robert shares his thoughts on the current state of the autonomous vehicle market. The adoption of autonomous vehicles will come down to trust. Grayson and Robert go on to discuss how brands and experiences and help to develop trust with autonomous vehicles. When developing relationships and engaging with the autonomous vehicle industry, Arm asks the following:What do you need in order to make autonomy deployable? Mass deployable. – Robert DayArm has been having these discussions for years as Arm considers autonomous vehicles a growth market. It really is an industry and a market that we want to make sure that Arm is front and center in. – Robert DayAs society begins to shift to electric vehicles and the autonomous vehicle industry embraces electrification, Arm is well-positioned as the company specializes in low-power, high-performance chips.Energy efficiency, thermal efficiency, it will all be really important for deployment. Especially in vehicles that are fit-for-purpose or vehicles that we actually drive as higher levels of autonomy come into them. – Robert DayWith higher levels of autonomy, safety is paramount. Robert discusses Arm's commitment to functional safety and why it is mission-critical for the safe deployment of autonomous vehicles.Putting the entire conversation into context, Grayson asks Robert what role he sees Arm playing in the autonomous vehicle ecosystem as the industry matures. It's all about deployability and what's required for autonomous vehicles to be deployed. – Robert DayWrapping up the conversation, Robert shares the story of how he first became interested in autonomous vehicles. It all started with an episode of Knight Rider. Grayson expands the conversation into the role popular culture will play in the adoption of this technology and why in the future there will be an Elvis autonomous vehicle service in Las Vegas.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

The only entry into the Monsters and Madmen boxset that isn't directed by Robert Day, Spencer Gordon Bennet's The Atomic Sub imagines a world where submarines provide intercontinental shipping and passenger service under the arctic, at least until those subs start mysteriously disappearing. Come for the alternative future! Stay for the special effects! Leave before the sworn pacifist realizes war is good!

We kick off a boxset of late 50's scifi/horror this week with The First Man into Space. Monsters and Madmen is dedicated to films produced by Richard and Alex Gordon, who also produced Fiend Without a Face which we watched five years ago. Things kick off here with Robert Day's First Man into Space, the tale of an American test pilot who decides to jet into outer space and things do not go well on his return. Very spoopy!

In 2016, Lawrence Batley Theatre in Huddersfield produced its first ever professional pantomime, Cinderella, written by one of the UK’s leading pantomime writers, Andrew Pollard, who has been brought back to write this year’s Jack and the Beanstalk. Andrew is taking a year off from playing Dame at Greenwich Theatre to tour in Around the World in 80 Days as Phileas Fogg. However there are still 6 of his panto scripts in production this Christmas around the UK. In this episode, Andrew speaks extensively about his views on what pantos should contain, the qualities required for good panto performers and how to deal with changing requirements, demands and attitudes to keep panto fresh and entertaining for new audiences. Jack and the Beanstalk by Andrew Pollard will run at Lawrence Batley Theatre in Huddersfield from 8 December 2017 to 6 January 2018. Andrew’s other pantos this year include Cinderella at Greenwich Theatre from 17 November 2017, another Jack and the Beanstalk at Salisbury Playhouse from 2 December 2017 and Beauty and the Beast at Queen’s Theatre Hornchurch from 30 November 2017, all finishing on 7 January 2018. Andrew can be seen on tour in Around the World in 80 Days until January. (Photo of Andrew Pollard as Long Joan Silver in Peter Pan at Greenwich Theatre credit Robert Day)
