Host Greg Hawver welcomes his McGuireWoods colleague Mark Freedlander, head of the firm's Restructuring & Insolvency Practice Group, and Robert Orr, principal at Sandton Capital Partners, to discuss their recent restructuring of a distressed healthcare business. The team took out the existing senior secured lender and allowed an out-of-court restructuring of the business and its capital structure. As Robert explains, they recognized that the company faced challenges – including unsustainable debt – but also that it had a “reason to exist.” “We just needed to solve the balance sheet problems,” he says.Connect and Learn More☑️ Robert Orr I LinkedIn☑️ Sandton Capital Partners I LinkedIn☑️ McGuireWoods | LinkedIn | Facebook | Instagram | X☑️ Subscribe Apple Podcasts | Spotify | Amazon MusicThis podcast was recorded and is being made available by McGuireWoods for informational purposes only. I'm totally geeked up about today's podcast. Robert Orr wrote what, in my opinion, was the best piece of baseball analysis last year quantifying what he called the SEAGER approach to hitting (after Corey Seager, who is the preeminent examplar of this approach). We talked about what led him to discover the SEAGER approach and possible implications that this nuance on swing decision metrics could have for individual players and organizational Player Development philosophies going forward. We talk about Patrick Bailey, Marco Luciano, and dig into some numbers for the Giants' farm system overall, and talk about how the SEAGER approach gives us a lens for understanding their strengths and weaknesses.Check out Robert's articles on the topic at Baseball Prospectus: “Quantifying the Corey Seager Approach,” and “SEAGER at the Team Level,” to get the full scope of his work. This podcast is based on a Kalos meeting about pipefitting best practices, particularly in commercial refrigeration applications. It begins with a few words about quality workmanship by the Kalos founder and CEO, Robert Orr. Pipefitting consists of repairs and joining metals; when joining metals, we need to liquify the alloy and draw it into the joint via capillary action. When pipefitting, oxygen can present some problems by coating the inside of the pipe with oxides that can contaminate the system. We can reduce the likelihood of oxide formation by flowing nitrogen while brazing; purging nitrogen displaces the oxygen in the lines before brazing, and flowing keeps oxygen out during the brazing process. Tip selection will be based on the piping diameter; tips that are too small won't adequately heat the pipe, and tips that are too large will consume too much fuel. You'll also need to leak-check your torch tanks and ensure that you have the appropriate ratio of oxygen to acetylene by aiming for a neutral flame rather than a carburizing or oxidizing flame. After brazing, we need to perform a nitrogen pressure test to ensure that the system is leak-free. Then, once the pressure test is passed, we should evacuate the system to keep the system clean, dry, and tight. Bryan, Matthew, Roman, and Nathan also cover: Brazing vs. soldering Properties of base metals Alloy properties and appropriate uses Mineral oil vs. POE oil and cupric oxide Safety practices and PPE Preparing copper (sealing, deburring, etc.) Valve seating Penetration and the gaps between surfaces Base metal temperature indications Advantages of nitrogen for pressure testing Vacuum pump best practices Micron gauges Learn more about the HVACR Training Symposium or buy a virtual ticket today at https://hvacrschool.com/symposium. Déjà vu! Similar to 2022, this season of Jays Talk Plus starts amid some struggles for Toronto's MLB team that continued into Game 1 at Tropicana Field Monday night. Blake Murphy breaks down what went wrong not only last night, but what hasn't clicked for them so far this season. He sorts through the numbers to back it up with Sportsnet Blue Jays Producer, Chris Black (28:35). After that, Blake welcomes Robert Orr, a data analyst and contributor at Baseball Prospectus, to dive into his latest piece "How The Rays Raised Their Offensive Game" and share some quick thoughts on a few names familiar to Jays fans (47:10). Sportsnet's Ben Nicholson-Smith joins Blake in-studio to chat about the Blue Jays' broken promise of attention to detail early on, and the state of the crowded AL East division (01:13:21). Bryan and Robert Orr continue their discussion about ethics by talking about what it means to have grit and discipline in business. They talk about what those characteristics look like in business and in life, and they mention some good books. Grit is a trait that can contribute to an ethical way of life; showing grit means that you follow through with a project until you get the results you want. Both physical and emotional grit are strengths, and those things tend to be more important than talent in our field. Compared to discipline, grit is a lot more closely intertwined with a person's emotional condition. When we encounter overwhelming negative emotions, grit is the quality that allows us to power through the current state of affairs. Discipline and grit are both based on commitment and resolve, but discipline deals more with actions rather than feelings. Discipline is more about habits, balance, and wisdom. A belief system or set of guidance is what drives discipline. Discipline can also be repetitious and boring, but it can take you farther than raw talent if you dedicate yourself to your belief system, sources of guidance, and goals. Developing discipline requires us to establish habits and sequence those habits. Good leaders and parents are the ones who establish those habits for employees or children. However, something to keep in mind is that both grit and discipline can amplify a person's bad characteristics. Robert and Bryan also discuss: Grit vs. talent (Angela Duckworth) Does grit count as an ethic? Discipline and delaying gratification Developing grit over time “Real” vs. “true” emotions and thoughts The downfalls of raw talent Thinking about obstacles in a healthy way If you have an iPhone, subscribe to the podcast HERE, and if you have an Android phone, subscribe HERE. Bryan and Robert Orr talk about ethics and what it means to have integrity when running a family business. Robert is a lifelong tradesman who is a licensed construction contractor, and he has overseen the construction side of Kalos for many years. Robert initially started off at the Air Force Academy and realized that he didn't feel that the military was right for him. While in Florida, Robert fell into the trades and learned both hard skills and ethics in the process. He started his own house-wiring business at age 21. Later, he went into home inspection and eventually started a business with his son (Bryan) and his brother-in-law (Keith) Kalos was co-founded by Bryan, Robert, and Keith, all of whom were tradesmen. Even when naming their business, they wanted to focus on ideals that extend beyond them and their individual legacies. They settled on the name “Kalos,” which is the Greek word for “integrity.” Having integrity in business is a lot more than just following rules and “having principles.” Real integrity is authentic and honest; you're transparent about who you are and deliver on the promises you make. Integrity and customer service are NOT the same thing, but you tend to yield higher customer satisfaction if integrity is at the forefront of your business. Evaluating yourself is also a component of integrity: reflecting on your desires, confronting greed, caring for employees, and choosing to do the right thing. In many small businesses that haven't fully found their stride, integrity can be compromised by fear. Robert and Bryan also discuss: Christianity in business Integrity as it relates to pricing expectations What it means to be savvy Taking responsibility If you have an iPhone, subscribe to the podcast HERE, and if you have an Android phone, subscribe HERE. Thursday, June 27, 2019, 12 noon WPKN 89.5 FM www.wpkn.org Host: Duo Dickinson In the last few years, we have all heard the word “walkable” used to market homes in cities and towns. It has become a marketing buzzword, used to sell in-town living. But “walkable” used to be the norm in cities and towns. Cars changed that. The Connecticut Turnpike, I-95, opened in 1958, and within a decade its final extension through to Rhode Island and the building of I-91 completely changed Connecticut’s cities. The huge ribbons of concrete and steel cut through these towns, often wrecking neighborhoods. These roads acted as walls, cutting off neighborhoods and ending any connection to the water that created the cities in the first place. This highway invasion changed every city in America, and the Baby Boomers extended the Greatest Generation’s love of suburbia and car-based living in Connecticut by abandoning downtown living. Connecticut’s cities were becoming those places that were not worth arriving at. But in the last decade, there is a new beginning of a dramatic change in how cities are used. Connecticut’s cities and real estate developers are realizing that the appeal of living in a place that is truly “walkable” has real value – to both retiring Baby Boomers who do not want to mow lawns, and their offspring, the Millenials do not want to even own a car, let alone a home. What is the future of living, at HOME, in downtown America? Three thought leaders will be online for this hour: Robert Orr is an architect and a renowned town-planner with more than forty years national and international experience. With projects at Seaside, and the New Hartford Library, Camp Anne and commercial, institutional and community projects, as well as custom residential homes, Orr’s role as urban designer has a depth of perspective few others can offer. Robert Orr has been honored with many design awards and featured in hundreds of publications at home and abroad. John Massengale has won awards for architecture, urbanism, architectural history, and historic preservation, from organizations and publications ranging from Progressive Architecture and Metropolitan Home, to the National Book Award Foundation (with the first architectural history book to win a National Book Award), to several chapters of the American Institute of Architects, and the Walton Family Foundation. He has served on the Boards of the Congress for the New Urbanism (CNU), the Institute for Classical Art & Architecture (ICAA), and Federated Conservationists of Westchester County (FCWC), and was the founding Chair of both CNU NYC and CNU New York (the state chapter). Massengale has taught at the ICAA, the University of Notre Dame, and the University of Miami and is a licensed architect in New York State. Steve Mouzon opened his own architecture firm in 1991 and produces a number of town-building tools and services. Mouzon Design’s Premium Tools Collection is a subscription service to robust new place-making tools that heretofore were unaffordable when commissioned by a single development. A Living Tradition is a framework for a new type of pattern book that is principle-based instead of taste-based, and therefore contributes to the creation of new living traditions. Steve is also a principal of the New Urban Guild in Miami. The New Urban Guild is a group of architects, designers, and other New Urbanists dedicated to the study and the design of true traditional buildings and places native to and inspired by the regions in which they are built.

North Carolina's Republican-dominated General Assembly has made a number of changes to the way judges are elected in the state, with many more proposals under current consideration. They include making races partisan and changes to district lines and term lengths, even eliminating some vacancies and proposals to do away with elections for judges altogether. Former state Supreme Court justice Robert Orr, a Republican, is no fan of the changes. He spoke with BPR's Jeremy Loeb about the proposals and about the state of the Republican party under President Donald Trump. Orr told BPR the legislature's moves regarding the courts threaten the independence of the judiciary. “We've seen the legislature either enacting or proposing a variety of changes, that I think the only fair assessment would be, to make the court system and judges more inclined to the legislature's positions than contrary to them.” Regarding President Donald Trump, Orr was an early critic and says Trump's only gotten worse. "Are there any characteristics or qualities of Donald Trump that I would want my children or grandchildren to emulate, and the truth is I can't think of a single one, which is a pretty sad commentary on the state of things." So what's a Republican to do? Orr doesn't have a specific answer, calling that "one of the biggest questions out there... These are very difficult time for those of us who I describe as mountain Republicans." Orr is also representing the craft beer industry in its legal challenge against wholesale distributors over the 25,000 barrel cap brewers can produce before being forced to enter into a distribution contract. He said the lawsuit is in the early stages but thinks craft brewers have strong legal and constitutional ground to stand on.

Donate to America Adapts (We are now a tax deductible charitable organization!) In this exciting episode of America Adapts, Doug Parsons speaks with James Stillwell, the Program Manager of Climate Implementation at the University of Maryland’s (UMD) School of Public Policy. First, we talk about James’ background and what led him to UMD. Then we learn about James’ role in the international climate change negotiations that occurred last year in France which led to the historic Paris Agreement. James walks us through many riveting and fascinating details on what it was like being on the ground in Paris during this planet saving event. James played a key role assisting UMD’s special advisor to the UN secretary-general on climate change, Robert Orr. Learn how some of the negotiations came down to the wire and how ultimately the final product exceeded everyone’s ambitions. Also learn how adaptation was addressed in parallel negotiations in Paris. James then takes us back to UMD and how it co-hosted “Climate Action 2016”, a UN sponsored climate change event, bringing together some of the world leaders on climate change (Al Gore, Bill Nye the Science Guy, etc.). Doug and James then pivot and discuss what Universities are doing around the country training the next generation of climate professionals. We discuss the differences between sustainability and adaptation; how UMD approaches this academic training; should mid-career professionals go back for more formal adaptation training; and also what employers are looking for in climate change professionals. We also learn how universities, in addition to their fossil fuel divestments, are also undertaking campus wide adaptation. Those are some of the key issues, but listen in as Doug and James cover a lot more! Finally, yes, most of your favorite podcasts are supported by listeners just like you!
