He is co-founder of KODO Insurance Services (Insurtech) and Chairman of the Board of Arrowood Insurance Services. He has a B.A. in Business Economics, from Wheaton College and a M.A. in Intercultural Studies from Fuller Theological Seminary. In his free time he loves playing baseball and spending time with his wife and three kids. Highlights from the Show Josh is a fourth generation Japanese American, with his great grandfather having immigrated in the late 1800s, and setting up an import-export business in Little Tokyo in Los Angeles The family lost everything when Japanese Americans were sent to incarceration camps during WWII Finding insurance the Japanese American community was next to impossible, so they started their own, and Josh's family started an agency, The J Morey Company, to serve the community, which he runs today Josh's story in taking over is similar to a lot of multi-generational insurance agencies, where the next generation may not be interested in taking over, can't afford to buy the business, or the business is no longer viable, which threatens the legacy of so many family businesses Rather than selling to another agency, Josh worked with a consultant to find a path to keep the business in the family despite not having the financing in place to buy the business That's what sparked the founding of Ori-gen, as a platform to continue the legacy of these companies It's not just about keeping the agencies going, but to support the communities that rely on these agencies in the way his ancestors and their communities needed each other after WWII Josh has also tried to drive more minority involvement in the insurance industry overall, which stems from his sense that this is the best industry and best country in the world That includes engaging the Asian and Pacific Islander community through AAIN (Asian American Insurance Network, where he's a board member), as well as partnering with other groups, like joining NAAIA and Ngozi Nnajiand her Black Friday efforts Josh advocates for DEI efforts because, without them, the industry will miss out on great talent and different approaches that only come from diversity within that talent This episode is brought to you by The Future of Insurance book series (future-of-insurance.com) from Bryan Falchuk. Website: https://www.workcompprofessionals.com/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/iwcpkevin/ Kevin Ring is the Lead Workers' Compensation Analyst at the Institute of WorkComp Professionals (IWCP), which trains both insurance agents and employers in how to build a successful workers' comp program. Employers have been taught that because workers' comp is mandatory, and the policy is the same no matter who they work with, that they have no control and should just shop for the lowest price. But nothing could be further from the truth! Kevin is extremely knowledgeable in the field of workers' compensation, and he wants to help struggling business owners and employers across America (particularly those in blue/grey-collar industries) limit unnecessary expenses and have more productive and profitable businesses. He has reviewed and analyzed over 1200 experience mod worksheets with clients, and has served as an expert witness in litigation involving the workers' comp premium audit. Kevin has also been published in Rough Notes, Insurance Journal, and other insurance and general industry trades publications, and has been called an "encyclopedia of workers' comp" by accomplished insurance agent and podcast host David Carothers. Workman's Compensation for Small Businesses Michael and Kevin Ring discussed a potential conversation about workman's compensation for small businesses and entrepreneurs. They highlighted the importance of the topic and agreed to focus on the topic of classifications and premium audit, a requirement for every business buying workers' compensation insurance. They also discussed the potential of reaching larger organizations through their show. The conversation was set to be organic and last between 15 to 20 minutes, with Kevin Ring sharing relevant links at the end. Workers Compensation: Employer Responsibility and Prevention Strategies Kevin Ring from the Institute of Work comp Professionals explained the importance of workers compensation to employers. He traced its origins to 1911 Wisconsin's Workers Compensation Law, which shifted liability for employee injuries from employees to employers. Kevin Ring emphasized that workers compensation is not just about injury claims, but also about employer responsibility and prevention strategies. He pointed out that the cost of workers compensation premiums is controllable through program setup and injury prevention strategies. Michael D. Levitt facilitated the discussion, emphasizing the need for a better understanding of workers compensation among business owners. Workers' Compensation Policy Importance Kevin Ring and Michael discussed the importance of businesses understanding their workers' compensation policies, particularly the classifications applied to their policy. Kevin Ring emphasized the need for businesses to work with their insurance agents to ensure the classifications are correct, as they determine the rates businesses pay on different parts of their payroll. He also highlighted the role of the workers' compensation premium audit, which checks if the estimated payroll matches the actual payroll of the policy. Kevin Ring also noted that there are exceptions to what is included in workers' compensation, such as overtime pay in most states. Insurance Audit and Record-Keeping Importance Kevin Ring emphasized the importance of accurate record-keeping for expense reimbursements to avoid potential issues with insurance audits. He stressed that businesses should consult with their insurance agents to understand what expenses are exempt in their state, as there are variations from state to state. Michael D. Levitt agreed, noting that accurate records are important not only for insurance situations but also for taxation. They discussed the need to correctly classify employees to avoid potential claims and disagreements with insurance companies. Kevin Ring concluded by stating that while insurance companies typically pay by default, inaccurate classification of employees could lead to scrutiny during a premium audit. Policy Classifications and Insurance Costs in Construction and Agriculture Kevin Ring discussed the importance of understanding the complexities of policy classifications in construction and agriculture, particularly in relation to payroll. He emphasized the need for a strong agent to guide businesses through this process to prevent overcharging. Kevin Ring also pointed out the importance of having an outside bookkeeper handle workers' compensation premium audit and advised businesses to ensure they don't pay more than necessary for their insurance. Michael D. Levitt agreed, stressing the importance of clean books and preparation for potential legislative changes. Both agreed on the need for businesses to select the right agent, not just the one offering the lowest price. Work of the Institute and Training Program Launch Michael D. Levitt and Kevin Ring discussed the importance of understanding the work of the Institute and the potential for further exploration of its system. Kevin Ring mentioned that interested individuals could learn more at work.comp professionals, com or by calling him directly at (828) 274-0959, or emailing him at Kevin@iwc.pro.com. Kevin Ring also mentioned the release of their first training program for employers, which can be found at locked and loaded training.com, and is specifically designed to provide employers with the basics to better manage their program.

Alright! It's about time I start exploring the world of podcasting/microcasting. I have been interested in podcasts since 2010 when I got my iPhone 3Gs. iTunes introduced me to it! I'm calling my microcast, Ridwan's Rough Notes. Rough Notes doesn't have to be perfect. It's just random notes on books I'm reading, life learnings, reflections etc. Hope to continue this experiment to more than 6 notes and see how I feel? Let's start the journey. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/ridwanjaafar/message

There was a New Wave revolution happening in rock music in the late 70s and the poster boy for it was the bespectacled Elvis Costello and his band of Attractions, which included our guest this week bassist Bruce Thomas. While the band was leading a new charge, the various members were also sorting out a dynamic that saw Elvis rise as their clear leader, a move that never sat well with Bruce. Over the years, tensions mounted and Bruce eventually left the band. All of this, as well as his own musical and personal history, are included in Bruce's book Rough Notes which came out last year. Here we talk about what's at the heart of the dysfunction, our conflicted feelings about Elvis, and Bruce's new career as a prolific writer. Also, he's one of the world's experts on Bruce Lee of all people! Pick up the book and enjoy the ride! https://www.brucethomas.co.uk/

He is known as the nation’s top insurance agency results coach, and is often invited to be the keynote speaker for national, state, and local events. He is also Rough Notes magazine’s most widely read columnist. Roger joins me today to share his wisdom on starting an agency. He provides a brief summary of what he calls The Seven Principles of Building an Agency and his personal experience regarding each of the seven principles. “If you're not hearing 'wow' from your prospects, then you have fallen into that bucket known as 'an insurance agent'.” – Roger Sitkins Today on Spot On Insurance: The seven principles of building an agency. Why having the right people is the first step in starting an agency. What does it mean to have a culture of accountability? What is the “unique selling proposition” of an organization? The effect of professionalism on building an agency. The number one complaint most consumers have about the agents they deal with. The percent of automation many agencies use today. Should you fix your processes even after you've already established your agency? The benefits of having a good pipeline process. The two types of perpetuation. Key Takeaways: It's not what you make, but what you keep. Not every client is a great client. Everyone leaves their business whether they plan to or not.
