In episode number 10 of this podcast, we featured FDNY Firefighter and LUF Human Performance Advisor James Lopez. During the episode we discussed many timeless topics related to physical and tactical fitness as well as enjoyment and quality of life. It's hard to comprehend how much has transpired since our previous conversation in 2019, to include a global pandemic, civil unrest, and war on the European continent, but Lopez is back in this episode to share how some of his practices and philosophies have evolved, and how some have stood the test of time. Lopez joined the FDNY in 1997 and has served as a Firefighter in Rescue Company 2 for nearly 20 years. GUEST 1 OVERVIEW: Tal Tsfany is President and CEO of Ayn Rand Institute. Tal is an entrepreneur, investor and a business executive in the technology field. Most recently Tal was the VP Customer Success at Mulesoft (Nasdaq: MULE) and served as a board member at Base CRM, a fast-growing software company based in Mountain View, Calif. Tal relocated to the US from Israel in 2006 with Amdocs, a telecommunications software company. In Israel, he was the CEO of Kidum, the largest private education company before it was sold to Kaplan University. Tal is also the co-founder of the Ayn Rand Center Israel. GUEST 2 OVERVIEW: After ten years working in the media talking about sex, Bettina Arndt was a household name. The highlights of her career in sex included not just having her own talk-back radio show and being banned for two years from live television and radio but becoming the person that everyone came to for advice about sex. She then turned to writing and talking about social issues, before writing an internationally best-selling book about sex, The Sex Diaries. Bettina followed this up with an exciting diary project on why sex means so much to men leading to her book, What Men Want. Next Bettina spent five years working as an online dating coach, giving advice to men and women on online dating, helping with writing their profiles and increasing their chances of meeting the right one. Becoming increasingly concerned about the demonisation of men in our society, Bettina decided to devote all her efforts to men's issues. She spent some years making YouTube videos – but stopped making regular videos after YouTube censored her channel. Her very popular blog published on Substack appears also in many Australian newspapers and online platforms. She has large numbers of followers who have volunteered to help in her regular campaigns to address injustice towards men. Her latest book, #MenToo, is collected wisdom from decades of Bettina's writing about men. Bettina is also conducting a campus tour, exposing the worrying goal of the campus rape scare campaign, namely to achieve more rape convictions by bullying universities into getting involved in adjudicating rape on campus – using lower standards for proof and denying accused young men their proper legal rights.

At 16 years old, Marlon attended Central Florida Vocational School to study computer programming and business management before attending Miami Dade College and Kaplan University to study computer information systems and information technology. In this episode… With the rise of Bitcoin and other forms of cryptocurrency, blockchain has become increasingly common. But its emergence raises privacy and security concerns, particularly with regard to digital assets and transactions. So, what do companies and developers need to consider before adopting blockchain or creating a blockchain platform? Software developer Marlon Williams says that in order to mitigate transaction exploits, designers need to implement proven frameworks when writing code to consider blockchain's nuances and lengthy finalization times. Yet when it comes to personal digital assets, privacy remains an issue, so Marlon asserts the importance of federal regulatory guidelines to simplify asset representation and functionality and help companies build privacy features into their blockchains.  In today's episode of She Said Privacy/He Said Security, Jodi and Justin Daniels interview Marlon Williams, Founder of Atlanta Blockchain Center, about considerations and concerns surrounding blockchain's widespread use. Marlon shares tips for developing blockchain platforms, how privacy impacts brands' use of blockchain, and the importance of regulatory guidelines in its mass adoption.

Why Purdue Professors Continue to Protest Purdue’s Purchase of a For-Profit U.

If Purdue University’s purchase of the for-profit Kaplan University can be thought of as a wedding, there were plenty of people in the audience shouting objections throughout the ceremony. The loudest were Purdue professors, who argued that the pair were far too incompatible to unite. Among those professors is David Sanders, an associate professor of biological sciences at Purdue and past chair of the university’s Faculty Senate. He organized a petition against the merger, which created what is now called Purdue University Global. When the EdSurge On Air podcast featured an interview last week with Purdue Global’s chancellor, Betty Vandenbosch, Sanders wrote in offering to share the faculty side of the story. And though the knot is already tied, he and other professors at Purdue say they would still like to have a say in how this new institution operates.

What Happens When A Public University Buys a For-Profit Online One?

When leaders of Purdue University wanted to move into online education, they took the unusual step of buying an existing online university, a big one with 30,000 students. And here’s the most surprising part: that online school it bought, Kaplan University, was a for-profit business—part of a sector that’s been criticized for high costs and poor outcomes for students. The deal sparked vocal protests from Purdue professors, and hundreds of them signed petitions opposing the arrangement, calling it an unprecedented privatizing of public education. Purdue leaders, meanwhile, say that Kaplan has better outcomes than other for-profits and that it serves an important audience of adult students who aren’t able to go to a traditional campus. This month Purdue University Global held its first graduation under the new banner. But what exactly is different now at the online institution, and how does this whole thing work? To try to get some answers, EdSurge talked with Betty Vandenbosch, the chancellor of Purdue University Global, who had been leading Kaplan University for the past few years.

In late April of 2017, Purdue University in West Lafeyette, Indiana, announced plans to acquire Kaplan University—an online, for profit school—its 15 campuses and learning centers, and its 32,000 students and 3,000 employees. The ostensible was to expand their presence in online education. They plan to continue running Kaplan online as a private company with a different name.  This is a unique situation for a lot of reasons which we get into during our discussion. Why Donald Graham Sold Kaplan University to Purdue for $1

There are many unanswered questions about the unprecedented sale of Kaplan University, a for-profit institution with several online programs but falling enrollments, to Purdue University, one of the top public universities in the nation. To try to get some answers, EdSurge recently sat down with Donald Graham, chairman of Graham Holdings Company, the group that sold the 15-campus Kaplan University to Purdue (for just $1). (Editor’s note, Graham Holdings is an investor in EdSurge.) A look at some details of the deal revealed in an SEC filing suggest that Graham Holdings bears the bulk of the financial risk, and as one analyst notes, is potentially leaving money on the table. It hands off much of Kaplan University to Purdue in exchange for essentially a long-term business contract for Kaplan, Inc. (which remains in Graham Holdings). Under the agreement, Kaplan will provide technology, marketing, and other support services for the new campus of Purdue that will be formed from the former for-profit. And Purdue has the option of canceling that deal after six years (through a “buy-out”) if it feels that Kaplan’s services aren’t working out. Graham, a former publisher of The Washington Post, knows how to skirt a journalist’s question, and even after half an hour of talking, I’m not sure he fully revealed the reasons for the sale. The reason he sold appears to boil down to his belief in the quality of Kaplan University (he even co-teaches a course for its business school) and his hope that making it part of Purdue will elevate its reputation and success in ways it could never achieve as a for-profit university.

The talk centers around the latest in open data resources and the library’s potential role in harvesting those resources and making them discoverable. We also have an update on privacy concerns from his 2015 Charleston Conference plenary talk with the Long Arm of the Law panel. Gary is a librarian, writer, consultant, and frequent conference speaker based in the Washington D.C. metro area. He is currently the Resource and Reference Center Director for GIJN and founder/editor of infoDOCKET.com, a daily update of news and new research tools. He grew up in the Chicago suburbs where he attended New Trier High School. Price received a Bachelors of Arts degree from the University of Kansas, and a Masters of Library and Information Science from Wayne State University in Detroit. He was for a time a reference librarian at George Washington University, and has worked for the search engine Ask.com as Director of Online Information Resources. Gary co-authored the book The Invisible Web with Chris Sherman in July 2001. He also does frequent consulting projects and has written for a number of publications. Schottlaender will retire as Dean from UC San Diego effective June 30, 2017. As Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosia said, Brian is a highly respected leader who has led many collaborative initiatives to advance digitization and digital preservation on national and global scales. “During his tenure at UC San Diego, print and digital offerings in our Library expanded by more than 50% and the number of collection endowments doubled.” Schottlaender’s “transformational leadership,” was credited with the UC San Diego Library’s current status as one of the top academic libraries in the nation, along with his “bold and visionary approach to navigating the evolving role of the academic library and in reshaping Library resources and services to best meet the changing needs of the academic community.” Most recently, Schottlaender launched the Geisel Library Revitalization Initiative (GLRI), with a generous gift from longtime friend and supporter, Audrey Geisel. The GLRI seeks to renovate the interior public spaces of Geisel Library, the university's most iconic building, to meet the needs of today's students and scholars. Wouldn’t Dr. Seuss be proud! I remember when Brian keynoted the 2010 Charleston Conference with the theme Anything Goes. His paper “Full-spectrum stewardship of the record of scholarly and scientific research” is in the proceedings of the 2010 Conference, freely available on the Purdue University website. Following Schottlaender’s retirement, UC San Diego’s Associate University Librarian for Enterprise Services, Tammy Nickelson Dearie, will serve as Interim University Librarian while a national search is conducted for his successor. http://www.thepress.purdue.edu/titles/charleston-conference-proceedings-2010 http://ucsdnews.ucsd.edu/pressrelease/brian_schottlaender_uc_san_diegos_university_librarian_to_retire_in_june_2017 Speaking of Purdue, I am sure you all noticed that Purdue is to acquire Kaplan University. Purdue’s President Mitch Daniels discusses the creation of a new public university that will help fill the need for postsecondary education for working adults and others, and address the explosive growth in online education. http://www.purdue.edu/newsroom/releases/2017/Q2/purdue-to-acquire-kaplan-university,-increase-access-for-millions.html The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has received an $877,000 grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, which will allow the Southern Historical Collection (SHC) at the Wilson Special Collections Library to further develop its transformative model for “community-driven archives.” In addition to several community archiving projects, the SHC will also develop and share training and educational materials in this emerging area of practice. Activities for the three-year grant, “Building a Model for All Users: Transforming Archive Collections through Community-Driven Archives,” will begin immediately. Community-driven archives are created through partnerships between a community that wishes to document and preserve its own history and an archival repository. In many cases, these are stories of marginalized communities that past generations of historians and archivists did not consider significant enough to record or preserve. I remember when The Louis Round Wilson Library was the main library at UNC-CH. Louis Round Wilson himself was still alive and had an office on the top floor. I also remember when David Moltke-Hansen was director of the SHC for a few years. David was one of our keynote speakers many years ago. Ah… memories! More memories. The Louis Round Wilson Library had at least three big rooms for the card catalog. One of my first jobs as a student was as “head filer”! Like Wow! This new book The Card Catalog: Books, Cards, and Literary Treasures by Library of Congress (Compiler) with a foreword by Carla Hayden has just been released. To quote LISnew: “The Card Catalog makes a persuasive case that cataloging knowledge is fundamental to the acquisition and spread of knowledge, and that a working library catalog is, in some ways, a basic necessity of civilization. And since cataloging is a calling that attracts neurotic and obsessive personalities, the history of the library catalog charts a weird, twisty path, with a lot of back-tracking followed by enormous leaps forward.” And last of all, please do not miss Jim O’Donnell’s April Back Talk “The Most Beautiful Invention.” It’s not quite about the card catalog, but is about the call number sticker. Ken Steele's 10th annual higher ed "year in review" continues with part 3, a look at the fall – and rise – of for-profit fortunes in 2016. In the previous two episodes, we looked at the proliferation of free college tuition policies across North America, the rise of anti-intellectualism and protectionism, and some of the implications for international education. (If you missed them, check out part 1 at https://youtu.be/CZ6nuznRV_I , and part 2 at https://youtu.be/AWuE7EhoejI ).   6) FOR-PROFITS For decades now, massive for-profit schools like the University of Phoenix and Kaplan University have been rewriting the rules of higher education, and transforming the landscape. Last year was their annus horribilis, but also likely marks a turning point to much better times ahead. For 8 years, the Obama administration aggressively prosecuted for-profit colleges and universities for deceptive marketing, fraudulent enrolments, and high rates of student loan defaults. Collectively, they were receiving more than $20 billion in student loans and $4 billion in Pell Grants, so the Government Accountability Office investigated thoroughly. The GAO’s undercover agents caught recruiters on hidden camera, encouraging students to lie on their loan applications. Major online universities like Phoenix were apparently targeting homeless shelters, and encouraging students with little chance of academic success to apply for substantial financial aid. There was a Senate hearing into For-Profit School recruitment practices, and new, tougher regulations. Between 2011 and 2015, for-profit universities saw declines of 30% or more in enrolment. Over 5 years, the University of Phoenix alone lost a quarter-million students, and laid off about a thousand employees. Its parent company, Apollo Group, retreated from Canada, closing Meritus University in Fredericton after just a couple of years, in order to concentrate on defending the home front. Obama’s so-called “gainful employment” legislation, finalized in 2014, aimed to keep student loan payments below 8% of a graduate’s total earnings, and would revoke financial aid eligibility for institutions that graduated students with unmanageable debt levels. Corinthian Colleges faced legal challenges by state and federal agencies, and finally declared it was closing more than 100 campuses in April 2015, including Everest College and CDI Institutes in Canada. In August 2016, ITT Technical Institute lost its accreditation, and it declared bankruptcy within a month, closing 130 campuses and laying off 8,000 employees. In September 2016, Washington revoked the accreditation of ACICS, the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools, after 105 years. ACICS accredited hundreds of for-profit and distance-ed colleges and universities. And just last week, in the final days of the Obama administration, it was announced that more than 800 programs failed the Department of Education’s “gainful employment” standards, and therefore risked losing student aid eligibility – 98% of them at for-profit institutions. But it seems pretty likely that 2016 marks the nadir of fortune for America’s for-profit colleges and universities. President-elect Trump hasn’t articulated his higher education policies, but it seems obvious that the founder of Trump University will have sympathies with other for-profits. After five years using the “university” label without accreditation, the courts forced a name change, but Trump University was closing by that time anyway. The president-elect has made it clear that he is a strong supporter of school choice and charter schools, promising to repurpose about a third of the federal education budget. It seems likely that the Trump administration will deregulate the for-profit sector, or at least relax enforcement of existing regulations. Analysts predict that he may grant a reprieve to ACICS. In the past, Trump has declared that he would completely eliminate the federal Department of Education – possibly eliminating the National Center for Education Statistics and the Pell Grant program as well. Anything his administration does to reduce or relax the federal government’s power over financial aid accreditation will remove the “teeth” from federal legislation like Title Nine, which protects gender equity in athletics and on campus. And Trump has indicated strong support for competency-based degrees, which will likely continue to gain momentum during his term. Trump’s nominee for Education Secretary, Betsy DeVos, is a reformer of elementary and secondary schools, a strong believer in charter schools, school choice, and voucher systems. She is likely to promote privatization, performance-based government funding, and legislation to further reduce the power of faculty and staff unions. She has been a supporter of religious schools and free speech on campus, and an opponent of political correctness, affirmative action, and same-sex marriage. Decades of growth in for-profit higher ed were largely undone under two terms of Obama’s administration. Whether you think that’s a good thing or not, the Trump administration is poised to reverse much of the regulation and enforcement that has held back the multinational expansion of for-profit colleges and universities. In Canada and around the world, we need to prepare ourselves for a resurgence of corporate players in higher education. A major shift in the landscape lies ahead. Kent Devereaux is the President and Chief Academic Officer of the New Hampshire Institute of Art (NHIA), a private, nonprofit, accredited college of the arts located in Manchester, New Hampshire, approximately one hour’s drive north of Boston. An accomplished educator and academic leader, Kent’s career has taken him around the world and back again. Before assuming the presidency at the New Hampshire Institute of Art in January 2015, Kent served as Professor and Chair of the Music Department at Cornish College of the Arts, where he also served as Artistic Director for the college’s presenting series, Cornish Presents, and where he co-founded and directed the Seattle Jazz Experience, a youth jazz festival—the latter earning him Downbeat magazine’s Jazz Education Achievement Award in 2014 and Cornish College of the Arts Distinguished Alumni Award in 2015. Kent also served on the faculty of both the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and the California Institute of the Arts for many years. In addition to his experience in traditional academia, Kent spent over a decade working in the technology and online education sectors including stints as Senior Vice President of Editorial and Product Development at Encyclopedia Britannica, where he was instrumental in transforming that storied educational publisher from a print to online business model in the 1990s, and as Senior Vice President and Dean of Curriculum at Kaplan University, where during his tenure enrollment at the for-profit online university expanded from 350 to over 45,000 students. Kent’s collaborations with other artists have been presented around the world including performances at the Brooklyn Academy of Music’s Next Wave Festival, the London International Theatre Festival (LIFT), and elsewhere. Kent’s own work as a director, composer, and performance artist has also been presented at Chicago’s Steppenwolf Theatre, Seattle’s On the Boards, and Minneapolis’ Walker Arts Center, among other venues. Originally from California, Kent studied music composition with Gordon Mumma while attending the University of California at Santa Cruz, jazz piano, composition, and arranging with Art Lande, Anthony Braxton, Gil Evans, and Jim Knapp at Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle, and further graduate studies at Stanford University with legendary computer music pioneer John Chowning. A passion for exploring the related arts also led Kent to Chicago where he earned a Master of Fine Arts at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) and to Indonesia, as a Fulbright Fellow to study Javanese shadow puppetry and its music.

There s an old saying in business that s half joke and half warning and can be applied to any location. In this case let s say Acadiana. "Do you know how to make a small fortune in Lafayette Start with a big one." Of course it s much easier to lose money than to make it, but the fear of failure doesn t scare off the usually young person with real entrepreneurial fire in their belly. The trick is channeling enthusiasm and passion into channels that will result in less talk and more business. The Opportunity Machine launched in 2009 to help Lafayette entrepreneurs turn ideas into reality. The Opportunity Machine, as its title suggests, give entrepreneurs opportunities to access classes and expertise from successful local business people in every aspect of building a company from making and marketing a product to doing your taxes. The Executive Director of The Opportunity Machine is Zach Barker. Pete Prados is the Director of Innov8 Acadiana. The number 8 in Innov8 represents the 8 parishes in Acadiana. Innov8 has helped develop and find financing for a number of fascinating startup businesses, some of which we ve featured on previous editions of Out to Lunch, including Wade Cl ment s Lift Horse and Wayne Nix s Nix Tool. There are many more, some of which Pete tells Peter on this edition of Out to Lunch. Dr. Blake Escudier defies the laws of physics by being in 3 places at once. Sitting at his desk in his office in Lafayette, Blake is an online professor of marketing at Kaplan University, and teaches the MBA program online at the University of Fredericton in New Brunswick, Canada. Among a long list of impressive academic business exploits, Blake previously taught consumer behavior to students in Silicon Valley at San Jose University. If you ve got an idea for a business in Acadiana or you want to know what business plans other people around here are hatching, check out this conversation. Photos at Charley G s by Gwendolyn Aucoin.
