Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Full Text of ReadingsMemorial of Saints Cornelius, Pope, and Cyprian, Bishop, Martyrs Lectionary: 443The Saint of the day is Saint CorneliusSaint Cornelius’ Story There was no pope for 14 months after the martyrdom of Saint Fabian because of the intensity of the persecution of the Church. During the interval, the Church was governed by a college of priests. Saint Cyprian, a friend of Cornelius, writes that Cornelius was elected pope “by the judgment of God and of Christ, by the testimony of most of the clergy, by the vote of the people, with the consent of aged priests and of good men.” The greatest problem of Cornelius's two-year term as pope had to do with the Sacrament of Penance and centered on the readmission of Christians who had denied their faith during the time of persecution. Two extremes were finally both condemned. Cyprian, primate of North Africa, appealed to the pope to confirm his stand that the relapsed could be reconciled only by the decision of the bishop. In Rome, however, Cornelius met with the opposite view. After his election, a priest named Novatian (one of those who had governed the Church) had himself consecrated a rival bishop of Rome—one of the first antipopes. He denied that the Church had any power to reconcile not only the apostates, but also those guilty of murder, adultery, fornication, or second marriage! Cornelius had the support of most of the Church (especially of Cyprian of Africa) in condemning Novatianism, though the sect persisted for several centuries. Cornelius held a synod at Rome in 251 and ordered the “relapsed” to be restored to the Church with the usual “medicines of repentance.” The friendship of Cornelius and Cyprian was strained for a time when one of Cyprian's rivals made accusations about him. But the problem was cleared up. A document from Cornelius shows the extent of organization in the Church of Rome in the mid-third century: 46 priests, seven deacons, seven subdeacons. It is estimated that the number of Christians totaled about 50,000. He died as a result of the hardships of his exile in what is now Civitavecchia. Reflection It seems fairly true to say that almost every possible false doctrine has been proposed at some time or other in the history of the Church. The third century saw the resolution of a problem we scarcely consider—the penance to be done before reconciliation with the Church after mortal sin. Men like Cornelius and Cyprian were God’s instruments in helping the Church find a prudent path between extremes of rigorism and laxity. They are part of the Church's ever-living stream of tradition, ensuring the continuance of what was begun by Christ, and evaluating new experiences through the wisdom and experience of those who have gone before. Diretta, graffiante e a tratti spietata.

Full Text of ReadingsMemorial of Saints Cornelius, Pope, and Cyprian, Bishop, Martyrs Lectionary: 442The Saint of the day is Saint CorneliusSaint Cornelius’ Story There was no pope for 14 months after the martyrdom of Saint Fabian because of the intensity of the persecution of the Church. Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò previously discussed with LifeSite the history of the apparitions of Our Lady in Civitavecchia, Italy which took place 25 years ago. During these miraculous events, Our Lady referred back to her apparitions and messages in Fatima, and she warned that Satan is out to destroy the family. Additionally, Our Lady spoke about the apostasy in the Church, the darkness that overshadows Rome, the need to consecrate Italy to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, and a third world war following the apostasy.Read more: https://www.lifesitenews.com/blogs/archbishop-vigano-our-lady-warned-of-great-apostasy-in-church-followed-by-risk-of-world-war-iiiLOVE LIFESITE? The Irgun (short for Irgun Tsvai Leumi, Hebrew for "National Military Organization" ארגוןצבאי לאומי) had its roots initially in the Betar youth movement in Poland, which Jabotinsky founded. By the 1940s, they had transplanted many of its members from Europe and the United States to Palestine. Acting often in conflict (but at times, also in coordination) with rival clandestine militias such as the Haganah and the Lehi (or Stern terrorist Group), the Irgun's efforts would feature prominently in the armed struggles against British and Arab forces alike in the 1930s and 1940s. Irgun was described as a terrorist organization by The New York Times, the Anglo-American Committee of Enquiry, prominent world figures such as Winston Churchill and Jewish figures such as Hannah Arendt, Albert Einstein, and many others. The Betar Naval Academy was a Jewish naval training school established in Civitavecchia, Italy in 1934 by the Revisionist Zionist movement under the direction of Ze'ev Jabotinsky, with the agreement of Benito Mussolini. Jewish inmates obviously knew ahead of time as they then collaborated in the attack and escape. To add to the confusion and panic, grenades were lobbed into the part of the prison which held those mentally unfit. A number of imprisoned Irgun terrorists and more than 100 Arabs escaped but there were troops in the vicinity and fighting resulted. Most of the escapees got away but 8 Jews were killed and 13 captured, many of them wounded. Full Text of ReadingsMemorial of Saints Cornelius, Pope, and Cyprian, Bishop, Martyrs Lectionary: 447All podcast readings are produced by the USCCB and are from the Catholic Lectionary, based on the New American Bible and approved for use in the United States _______________________________________The Saint of the day is Saint CorneliusThere was no pope for 14 months after the martyrdom of Saint Fabian because of the intensity of the persecution of the Church. Men like Cornelius and Cyprian were God's instruments in helping the Church find a prudent path between extremes of rigorism and laxity. They are part of the Church's ever-living stream of tradition, ensuring the continuance of what was begun by Christ, and evaluating new experiences through the wisdom and experience of those who have gone before. Crowds gathered in St. Peter's Square on April 10 for the Vatican's first public Palm Sunday Mass in two years, and Pope Francis began the busiest liturgical week of the year while still dealing with acute knee pain. Afterwards, he called for an Easter truce in Ukraine. On “Inside the Vatican,” Rome correspondent Gerard O'Connell and host Colleen Dulle discuss Pope Francis' message of peace and how he is likely to expand it later this week. The two also look at what mobility challenges Pope Francis may face during his eight Holy Week ceremonies. Note: After this episode was recorded April 11, news broke that Pope Francis will be washing the feet of inmates at a prison in Civitavecchia, Italy, on Holy Thursday. Two high-profile Ukrainians have also called on Pope Francis to remove a Russian family from co-presenting one of the Stations of the Cross at the Colosseum with a Ukrainian family. Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò recently wrote a letter to cloistered nun about “the present crisis is the metastasis of the conciliar cancer”. He refers to “the causal relationship between Vatican II and its logical and necessary consequences over the course of the last sixty years.” Archbishop Viganò also recently endorsed the 1990s apparition of Our Lady in Civitavecchia, which foretold the culmination of the Third Secret of Fatima, the destruction of the family, and the betrayal of priests from within.
