What does it mean to live a good life? And can your running practice help you get there? In this episode of The Trailhead, Zoë Rom and Brendan Leonard sit down with Sabrina Little: ultrarunner, philosopher, ethics professor, mom of (soon to be) three, and author of The Examined Run: Why Good People Make Better Runners. Sabrina's work sits at the fascinating intersection of character development, everyday ethics, and endurance sports. She teaches philosophy at Christopher Newport University and writes a beloved ethics column for iRunFar—and she's here to explore how running can be a "laboratory for virtue," where our daily choices shape who we become both on and off the trail. Together, we unpack: How running teaches us about moral character (whether we know it or not) Everyday ethical choices in sport and life—beyond the big scandals Why we hedge the truth (even when no one's watching) What it means to celebrate others' success while still chasing your own The role of humor and humility in building resilience How parenting and philosophy collide  And why runners aren't just chasing finish lines—they're practicing becoming better people.

We marveled at the athletic performance of the year to prepare for this great episode! It kicked off with us picking our jaws up off the floor, in awe of Tara Dower's overall record on the Appalachian Trail. Coach Megan delves into what made it possible (strides and speed) and what sets Tara apart (being a superhero). This achievement will take decades to fully process! The main science talk was a new study on Kilian Jornet's physiology data from 2022 UTMB, where he won in historic fashion. There are some wild pieces of information in this study that push the limits of what we know about endurance: biomechanical adaptations like reduced cadence, remarkable metabolic flexibility, shockingly high lactate levels, major reductions in hemoglobin, big variations in carb intake, and perhaps most interestingly--post-race cognitive impairment similar to brain injury patients. We jump into each finding, mixing theory with speculation about what comes next. And this one was full of the best topics! Other topics: David's decision about whether to do the Javelina 100 Miler in October, a pros v. cons list, 7 tips for ultra logistics, why we hate chairs, Anton Krupicka qualifying for UTMB, rhabdo in college lacrosse and what runners can learn, a discussion of the amazing essay "A Case Against Supershoes" by Sabrina Little, a study on cooling headbands, the limitations of statistics in smaller sample-size studies, and how elite athletes fuel. Can running make me a more moral person? Can striving to be a better person make me a better runner? In The Examined Run, philosopher and ultramarathon runner Sabrina Little asks whether running can be a laboratory for developing our character. She looks at the key ideas in virtue ethics--virtue, vice, exemplarism, moral emotions, and competition--and brings them into conversation with her experience in training and racing. Little pushes against the frequent conversations about ethics and sport that focus on the negative--doping and other forms of cheating or on simplistic expressions like “no pain, no gain.” Sabrina argues that these ideas don't address the rich picture of how athletics inform a good life, and sport's relationship to acts of justice or courage. A good athlete is not just one who avoids cheating--rather, they perform feats of perseverance and courage, and succeed by working to develop their natural capacities. Little employs her own experiences in training, coaching, and racing in world class ultramarathons to reveal how athletics and virtue are deeply interconnected. NIL sent shockwaves through college athletics when it was signed into law in 2021. Now student-athletes could earn money off of their name, image, and likeness. But there weren't any guide-rails to help student-athletes navigate the new NIL landscape. Enter Kim Whitler. She co-wrote Athlete Brands: How to Benefit from Your Name, Image and Likeness. And: In 2020, Sha'Carri Richardson was barred from representing Team USA at the Tokyo Olympics because she tested positive for marajuana. Jo Morrison says there are many other elite athletes like Richardson who've had their reputations tarnished for taking banned substances that have little to no evidence of enhancing performance. Later in the show: For runners, there's nothing like the freedom of lacing up your shoes and putting foot to pavement, logging mile after mile in the open air. Sabrina Little studies how running can hone virtues that are beneficial to life outside of sports. Plus: While golf might not be a high-octane contact sport like basketball or football, it's something you can play throughout your life and even into your later years. Carray Banks is on a mission to generate funding to field both womens and mens golf teams at all HBCU's in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.

Staying motivated is something that every runner has to deal with.  Whether you're constantly lacking motivation or it only comes up once in a blue moon, one of the secrets to powering through these times is accountability. So, how do you set yourself to be accountable? What happens when you need external accountability? To answer these questions, we've brought on Sabrina Little, an expert coach and accomplished professional trail and ultra runner for HOKA ONE ONE. She has qualified for 5 US teams and has won 5 US titles from the 50-mile trail to the 24-hour road ultra. She previously held American records in the 24-hour and 200K distances.  This is a fascinating discussion that just might change the way you look at who is accountable to whom. This week's show brought to you by: LMNT When coaching endurance runners of all levels to be their best, I always emphasize the need for proper hydration with the right balance of electrolytes. Most athletes I've coached are surprised to learn that their sodium needs are actually much higher than they expected and it's been hurting their performance.  Part of the reason athletes need much more sodium than they think is not just because they lose electrolytes through their sweat, but also because athletes tend to eat very healthy diets.  They've been told that salt is a bad thing in food and frequently don't get enough for their lifestyle.  Much of the science of sodium is based on people who eat highly processed diets which also are very low in potassium. It could actually be the low potassium levels causing the issues that sodium has been blamed for!  What is clear is that both sodium and potassium at the proper levels are essential for high performance (and for life in general!).  That's why we partnered with LMNT to offer a free sample pack of their electrolyte mix. Head to drinklmnt.com/runnersconnect to get yours now. The Sample Pack includes 8 packets of LMNT (2 citrus, 2 raspberry, 2 orange, and 2 raw unflavored).

We have a new bi-weekly segment on the podcast and it's call "Fail" Forward Friday. Yes, you read that correctly - the "Fail" in quotes. For so many of us there have been times in our lives when we thought we had failed, or worse, that we were failures. Those moments can leave of questioning everything that came before and whether or not we should continue down our chosen path. Then, if we persist we may realize that with time those setbacks can be a gift. Rather than holding us down those "failures" prove to be a catalyst for growth. Not merely to a level which we have already reached, but one that exceeds everything that came before. In our first episode of "Fail" Forward Friday we hear from two absolute badasses - Allie Wilson and Sabrina Little. Allie is one of the best middle distance runners in the country. Sabrina is one of the best trail and ultra runners in the country. But, for both of them, it wasn't always that way. “So in the classical tradition they often ask the question of what role athletics can play in the good life. And typically the way it is described is that it has a role in character development in sort of helping us to be more well-ordered such that we can flourish longterm. But they also express a concern that if you are having an outsized focus on athletics that it can be bad, both physically for your constitution, but also for your character. There are ways of participating in sport that don't form you in the right way and so I've wondered about my relationship with running in terms of the sort of life that I want to have, in terms of the sort of life that's suited to what it means to be a human and flourish, and I just don't think sports has been an unqualified good in my own formation. I mean, there are certain qualities that are reinforced that are not…I mean, envy is the big example that I give, or a kind of intemperance, having an outsized affection for sport that crowds out other features of my life or doesn't make me a good member of my community. So, in asking the question of what flourishing is, what a good life would be constituted of, I've started to inspect the role that running has on my life and I don't know how well—at least in the dosage that I do it in in ultrarunning—I don't know if it really supports that kind of life.” I've been wanting to have this conversation with Sabrina Little for a while now and I'll just say this: It was awesome. Sabrina is an amazing human being. She's a wife a new mom, she's a full-time professor of Philosophy and the Humanities at Morehead State University in Kentucky, she writes my favorite column for iRunFar called The Examined Run, and she's also a heck of runner in her own right: Sabrina has won 5 U.S. titles, she's represented the U.S. five times at international championships, she was the silver medalist at the 2013 world 24-hour championships, helping the U.S. win a team gold at that event, she previously held American records for 24 hours and 200K, and she finished 12th at the 2018 Trail World Championships in Spain to help the U.S. team take a bronze medal. In this conversation, we talked about how running came into her life, running her first 100 miler as a freshman in college as a grand gesture to her mom, who was in remission from ovarian cancer at the time, and how she eventually got into competitive ultrarunning and representing the U.S. at an international level. We also talked a bit of philosophy, why that field of study piqued her interest in college, how and where philosophy and running intersect for Sabrina, including how she “re-ordered her loves” after becoming a mom a little over a year ago, how she thinks about competition, and a lot more. This episode is like eavesdropping on some friends’s conversation– we welcome Sabrina Little and Sara Mahoney, two of Tina’s close friends. We have a great dynamic between Sara, a professor of exercise physiology and researcher of nutrition and ultra-endurance performance. We also have Sabrina who is a professional ultra runner for Hoka, a philosophy professor and a mom to a 11-month-old. We loved getting to learn about each how each of these worlds– one more scientific and one more philosophical– are intertwined with running.    In this episode we cover…  How Sabrina’s trade of reading things that people have read for hundreds of years helps her ask the questions about what it means to be human. These deep questions we often don’t pause to ask, unless we’re maybe on the trail or running. Sara shares about FKT’s (Fastest Known Times) and how they differentiate from Strava segments which are smaler sections. She says FKTs can be created more of an experience and with more formality. On mental toughness...Sabrina shares that she has researched and written about this topic.  “Oftentimes we hear these phrases like, ‘no pain, no gain,’ or ‘pain is weakness leaving the body.’ It’s indifferent to the kinds of pain that we're talking about. So if we're talking about injury, then no pain no gain is just imprudent, and it's poor stewardship of your body. If we're talking about pain in the way that people often describe discomfort, then that's a kind of edifying pain, but I guess it takes a bit of prudence or experience to know the difference.”  On knowing your limits…Sara shares, “You don't have to like you don't have to take everything so seriously. And be yeah like you know as you said, it's okay to do it on occasion for like an experience where you're finding your limits but you don't have to do it three times a week every week.” See running as a celebration, not as a test to see if you’re good enough or worthy enough.  We will always good days and bad days, but the important think is to keep working on it over time and move the needle closer to a place of self-love.  If you see others doing it, it tells your brain it’s possible you can do it too.    Resources: Sara Mahoney IG    Sabrina Little IG   Fastest Known Time Website     Thank you to Momentous, Athletic Greens, and Picky Bars for sponsoring this episode.   Being a tough year with additional stresses on top of an already overwhelming situation means sleep can often be lost...but it is the one thing that we know would help us. She logs over a hundred running miles every week, helps the cross-country students at her husband’s college pace their morning workouts, travels all over the world to compete in trail races anywhere from 30 to 100 miles, and still finds time to work on her dissertation and hang out with her husband. With Aristotle at the top of her list of favorite philosophers, it’s no wonder she’s a really zen kind of person. Sabrina takes us through the definition of perseverance and what that’s been like in her life. Bringing your emotions into reason is one of the best habits you can develop to prepare you for life’s most challenging seasons. Sabrina ties it all together with virtues, the glue that holds our goals and passions together. Perseverance means to remain under a burden. Anything difficult takes a lot of grit to push through. Staying in the race even when it gets hard is where you’ll find the greatest rewards. Knowing your end is Sabrina’s guidance for success.  When you can define your goal and visualize the outcome, there is always a way to travel down that path.
