Independent bottlers take sourced casks of whisky, mature them, and then bottle them under their own brand names. It's a practice that's been commonplace in Scotland for generations, and has expanded to the U.S. with independents like Single Cask Nation and Lost Lantern. Greg Swartz is the co-director of Independent Spirits, a new documentary series highlighting independent bottlers, and he'll join us on this week's WhiskyCast In-Depth. In the news, a cask investment firm with an estimated $80 million in casks has gone into administration, while Moet Hennessy plans to lay off 1200 workers and return headcount to pre-pandemic levels.

In this episode of EmbellishPod, I had the pleasure of welcoming Josh and Jason from Single Cask Nation, a pioneering independent bottler in the whiskey industry. We dove deep into the fascinating world of independent bottling, exploring its significance in the whiskey landscape, particularly in the United States, where it is still a relatively novel concept. We kicked off the conversation with an introduction to Single Cask Nation, where Josh and Jason shared their journey from whiskey enthusiasts to independent bottlers. They recounted how their passion for whiskey led them to champion lesser-known distilleries and how they aim to highlight unique expressions of whiskey that might otherwise go unnoticed. Jason took us through his personal journey into whiskey, starting from his university days in Aberdeen, where he discovered the joys of single malts. He reminisced about his early experiences and how they shaped his love for whiskey. Josh, on the other hand, shared a compelling story about his transition from being straight edge to discovering the rich flavors of whiskey, particularly through his first encounter with Lagavulin 16. This moment sparked his deep dive into the world of whiskey, showcasing how flavors can evoke powerful memories and emotions. As we continued our discussion, we touched on the challenges of selecting casks for bottling. Jason explained their meticulous selection process, emphasizing the importance of texture and the connection between the nose and palate. They shared insights into how they taste through numerous casks, often experiencing minimal disagreement due to their shared passion and understanding of quality whiskey. We also explored the evolution of their brand and the role of social media in building a community around Single Cask Nation. Josh highlighted the positive atmosphere in their Facebook group, where members engage in supportive discussions about whiskey, share experiences, and connect with one another. This sense of community has been crucial in maintaining authenticity and trust with their audience. Towards the end of the episode, we discussed the balance between education and production, as they navigate their roles as both educators and independent bottlers. They emphasized their commitment to transparency and authenticity, ensuring that their recommendations and products reflect their genuine passion for whiskey. Overall, this episode was a rich exploration of the independent bottling world, filled with personal anecdotes, insights into the whiskey selection process, and a celebration of the community that surrounds this beloved spirit. I hope you enjoy listening to it as much as I enjoyed having this enlightening conversation with Josh and Jason from Single Cask Nation.   00:00:00 - Introduction to EmbellishPod 00:00:47 - Meet the Guests: Single Cask Nation 00:01:06 - What is Single Cask Nation? 00:02:54 - Jason's Journey into Whisky 00:05:48 - Josh's Unique Introduction to Whisky 00:07:01 - The Nostalgia of Whisky 00:10:02 - Musical Background: Josh's Passion for Bass 00:11:41 - Jason's Love for Pool 00:12:51 - Daily Drinkers: What They Enjoy 00:15:15 - Exploring Independent Bottling 00:21:02 - Selection Process for Casks 00:25:51 - Disagreements in Selection 00:29:07 - Challenges of Independent Bottling in the U.S. 00:34:54 - Maintaining Authenticity and Trust 00:40:02 - The Role of Social Media 00:42:04 - Community Building through Social Media 00:49:36 - Final Thoughts on Social Media

Artisanal Spirits Company CEO Andrew Dane tells Proactive's Stephen Gunnion that the company specialises in the creation and sale of exceptional, limited-edition whiskies and related experiences globally. Its primary operations are managed through a subsidiary, the Scotch Malt Whisky Society, with recent expansions including the launch of JG Thomson in 2021 and the acquisition of a new independent bottling business, Single Cask Nation, in the US earlier this year. Artisanal Spirits Company procures whiskies from over 150 Scotch malt whisky distilleries and additional spirits from 20 countries, maturing and bottling these under their brands. The company sells these products exclusively to its global membership, which has surpassed 40,000 members. Members enjoy exclusive purchasing rights and access to member rooms in the UK and partner bars worldwide, enhancing the whisky experience. Marketing strategies vary by region, leveraging digital platforms, affiliate programs, and gifting, particularly in the US during Father's Day. Dane emphasized the enjoyment of whisky over investment, offering bottled casks for personal consumption. Membership growth, a key indicator of revenue potential, increased by 10% last year, contributing to an 8% revenue growth. He said the company explores new markets through a franchise model, transitioning successful franchises into subsidiaries as seen in Australia and Taiwan. Currently, opportunities in Vietnam, Brazil, India, and Nigeria are being considered. The recent acquisition of Single Cask Nation in the US aims to further penetrate the American market, exploiting the minimal overlap between their respective audiences to target the American whiskey segment. #ArtisanalSpiritsCompany #Whisky #ScotchMaltWhiskySociety #JGThompson #ScotchWhisky #LimitedEditionWhisky #WhiskyTasting #GlobalWhisky #WhiskyMembership #SingleCaskNation #ProactiveInvestors #invest #investing #investment #investor #stockmarket #stocks #stock #stockmarketnews

Who knew spending time with a bourbon legend could be so amazing? (rhetorical question, really.) April 4 found Joshua and Jason in the company of the one and only Eddie Russell of Wild Turkey Fame. Eddie, now 36 years into his life with the distillery, spent a disproportionate amount of his time with the Joshua and Jason (more time than they could have hoped for). Together the boys selected two casks of Wild Turkey Bourbon for Single Cask Nation and have a great in-depth conversation with Eddie.Have a seat, have a pour, and listen in. Unless you're driving. If you're driving, be smart and stay sober but be sure to listen into the conversation!Special thanks to: - Weigh Down for allowing us to use their song "Wooden Monsters" as our theme song- Moana McAuliffe for designing our Podcast Logo- Blue Yeti for making great microphones- Olympus and Tascam for making fine mobile recording devices- Joshua Hatton for producing and editing

There was a changing of the guard at Ireland's Midleton Distillery this week, in addition to the housewarming party for Midleton's massive distillery expansion. Brian Nation officially replaced Barry Crockett as Master Distiller for Ireland's largest distillery, and it's the first time in almost 70 years that a Crockett family member won't be at the distillery. We'll meet the man charged with carrying on the legacy of names like Jameson, Power, and Crockett on this week's WhiskyCast In-Depth, and get the details on the distillery expansion in our news update. There's also word on this year's special releases from Diageo, and Fred Laing tells us about the new Douglas Laing's Old Particular range of single cask bottlings. In this week's tasting notes, there's a little-known Irish whiskey from Midleton, Glen Grant's Five Decades single malt honoring longtime Master Distiller Dennis Malcolm, and a new Dalmore bottling from Single Cask Nation.

Utah's High West Distillery & Saloon crams a craft distillery and high-end restaurant into two historic buildings in the ski resort's downtown area. James Dumas, a James Beard Award-nominated chef  and partner in High West, takes us on a tour of the distillery for this week's WhiskyCast In-Depth, and it's often hard to tell where the distillery begins and the restaurant ends. Dumas didn't learn to appreciate what whisky offers until he started working with High West founder David Perkins, but now, he's a complete convert, as he showed us during the tour. In the news, Tomatin takes top honors at the Whisky Fringe for the second year in a row. We'll also have the latest on new whiskies from Tullamore Dew, Single Cask Nation, and a new series of Jameson bottlings...along with a reason to skip the duty-free shop if you're flying on Ryanair.

Joshua Hatton and Jason Johnston-Yellin started out as whisky bloggers, and are now bottling their own whiskies for a unique audience. Single Cask Nation and the Jewish Whisky Company are on the leading edge of a growing trend in the whisky business...targeting the unique and growing niche market of Jewish whisky lovers. While there's no clear consensus on what makes a whisky kosher, Single Cask Nation is bottling both kosher and non-kosher whiskies and letting each person make their own choice. In the news, a tanker truck full of whisky crashes and catches fire in New Jersey, The Glenlivet discloses the details of Alpha, and George Washington's Whiskey is now being made in New York as well as Virginia.
