Joining us this week is a master of observation – an author, journalist and documentarian whose work has delved into the furthest margins of modern life. From conspiracy theorists to the inner world of psychopaths, his stories always keep one foot in the world of misfits and outsiders. It's the brilliant Jon Ronson! In this episode, Jon reflects on his remarkable journey from a bullied teen in Cardiff to one of the most distinctive non-fiction storytellers of our time. He shares how a squatting stint in London and a chance role in the Frank Sidebottom band helped him find his tribe, and how a single regretful sentence written in his twenties changed his entire approach to journalism.Jon also reflects on how being fired from a local Manchester radio station became a painful but pivotal moment that reshaped both his career path and creative outlook. He goes on to explore how his work has evolved alongside the shifting media landscape – from his early days at Smash Hits, to creating the acclaimed BBC podcast Things Fell Apart – and shares why he remains optimistic about the future of factual storytelling, even in the age of AI.Tickets for Psychopath Night, Jon's latest live UK tour, are available now. You can also catch up on both series of Things Fell Apart on BBC Sounds. For all the latest news, click here to follow us on Instagram!***Please take the time to rate and review us on Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your pods. For this episode we're joined in person by the delightful Siân Pattenden, author of the Agatha Bilke and Magical Peppers children's book series. We start by asking our guest about her early years as a child actor and teenage playwright before she describes the fanzines she published with her pal Nicky Fijalkowska. We hear how these helped to get her foot in the door at Smash Hits, the million-selling pop bi-weekly she joined in 1989. Quotes from classic Hits pieces she wrote are interspersed with hilarious recollections of working alongside Tom Doyle and Sylvia Patterson. From "Ver Hits" we move on to the more indie-tastic Select and Siân's part in the Britpop wars – with special attention to Elastica, Jarvis Cocker and a pulped July 1994 issue that contained her guide to "legal highs". After reminiscences of a stint teaching music writing at the London School of Journalism, Siân explains the genesis of her 1998 book How to Make It in the Music Business. Mention of a 2007 Guardian Blogs piece bemoaning the "boy-rock" template established by the Beatles leads into reflections on the all-girl Bangles, subject of a new authorised biography by two-time RBP podcast guest Jennifer Otter Bickerdike. The desperately sad passing of David Johansen prompted us to dig out and digitise a 1994 audio interview with the sometime New York Dolls frontman. We hear three clips of David talking very amusingly to Q's Mat Snow – and in the process pay tribute to the singer and his fellow Dolls. After Jasper marks the 70th anniversary of the death of Charlie Parker with quotes from the late Richard Cook's magnificent 1995 piece about the bebop genius, we pay additional tribute to jazz-funk vibraphonist Roy Ayers and neo-soul queen Angie Stone. Many thanks to special guest Siân Pattenden. Visit her website at sianpattenden.co.uk for more info on her books, art and music. Pieces discussed: En Vogue: Dawn! Maxine! Terry! Cindy!, At Home in L.A. with Paula Abdul!, This is the Future: Elastica — the Bash Street Kids, Meet the Sheatles, The Bangs: Not Just Another Girl Group, The Bangles: a Female Fab Four?, The Bangles: Globe Trotters, The Bangles: Eternal Flame, The New York Dolls' David Johansen (1994), Charlie Parker: The Prince of Wails, Roy Ayers, Angie Stone: Precious and Pure, Dancing in New York Emmylou Harris: Emmylou on the Verge and The Swede Smell of Success.
Can You Feel It?It's July, 1989 and the temperature is hot! Actually, for a lot of the UK it surprisingly was, but let's leave meteorological memories aside, we're talking the dancefloor. The country, the WHOLE nation was completely right on one, matey. Well maybe not the entire nation, but there was no doubt that the BPMs were sweeping the nation much quicker than the BSB squarial was in the last summer of the eighties. As 1988 became 1989, the underground was rapidly moving overground. The house sound of Chicago and Detroit had landed on our sceptred isle and we were making it out own. Artists such as The Beatmasters, Coldcut and Mark Moore's S-Express had stamped their authority on the charts and across the country as teens were pouring over Smash Hits for the lyrics of Inner City tracks and swapping mixtapes of the latest grooves. And, NOW That's What I Call Music were THERE!Well, yes they were, but that's not the whole story. Get on the dancefloor legendary compilers K-tel and new variously compiled whippershappers from Telstar, who (for once) were ahead of the compilation curve. Albums series such as Deep Heat (in those large cassette boxes Discog fans!) were bringing the cool kids a real mix of dance, hip hop and sounds from both sides of the Atlantic. So what did our friends at EMI/Virgin do? What they always do - respond, and then some!Join author, journalist, compiler and all round dance music fanatic Joe Muggs as we revisit the explosive dancefloor culture of summer 1989 though the lens of NOW Dance 89. Rediscover some iconic tracks from Inner City, Soul II Soul and Coldcut. Remember (because you may have forgotten) the VERY 89 sound of Hip House with the likes of The Cookie Crew, Merlin and (awesome super duper) Tyree. Find out how NOW navigated a groove between the mainstream and the emerging underground through some amazing 12” mixes and laid a blueprint for the impending sound of the 90s, and indeed an unavoidable cultural shift into the next century of pop and beyond. And if that wasn't enough, find out which dance icon Joe sought out an autograph from, how the legendary producer Youth may have missed a chance to be on The Fast Show, which track brings tears to mothers eyes at Big Fish Little Fish discos and why we need the uplifting and uniting experience of house music now more than ever.People, hold on! Episode 182: Depeche Mode – Speak & Spell (1981) Part 2 Brian and Sarah's look back at Depeche Mode's debut album, 1981's Speak & Spell, continues in this episode. As you may recall, they're using the US track listing for the album, so the next songs up for discussion are "Dreaming of Me" and "Boys Say Go!" "Dreaming of Me" was the debut single for the band, and although to Sarah's dismay, there's no Smash Hits review, our hosts were able to find other reviews from back in the day to share in this episode. Additionally, Brian shares information from a contemporary Rolling Stone article in which "Dreaming of Me" makes a surprising appearance. One might think because "Boys Say Go!" was merely an album track, that Brian and Sarah wouldn't have much to say about it, and they would therefore have time to cover three songs in this episode. However, Brian's feelings for this song inspire him to talk at length about it. Are they positive or negative feelings? Well, that's for you to find out! And, it must be admitted that Sarah doesn't exactly remain tight-lipped about the song either. Make sure to listen until the end (but don't you always?), because there's a rare extra-special musical treat you won't want to miss! fWotD Episode 2809: Smash Hit Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Sunday, 12 January 2025 is Smash Hit.Smash Hit is a 2014 rail shooter game developed and published by the Swedish indie game studio Mediocre. Through the game's 12 levels, the player takes a first-person perspective, shooting metal balls to destroy glass obstacles. Additionally, the player can shoot up to five balls at once by smashing a consecutive sequence of crystals and gather power-ups that are activated for a limited amount of time. The game also features a one-time in-game purchase that allows the player to start from any unlocked checkpoint. The game's development began in 2012. Dennis Gustafsson programmed the game and created its physics engine and acoustics, while Henrik Johansson designed its levels. Douglas Holmquist was hired to compose the soundtrack and sound effects. The game was released for free on iOS and Android on 6 March 2014. A virtual reality adaptation of the game was released for platforms in 2015 and 2018. Smash Hit received positive acclaim from reviewers, who praised its physics engine, graphics, music, and sound effects. CNET and Apple Inc. listed it as one of the best mobile games of 2014. This week on Talk2TheHand, we dive into the glittering world of Smash Hits—the legendary pop magazine that defined an era and shaped the music tastes of millions of 80s and 90s kids. Known for its cheeky tone, playful interviews, and iconic posters, Smash Hits wasn't just a magazine; it was the pop bible for fans of Wham!, Madonna, Kylie, Take That, and beyond. We'll explore how it captured the heart and humor of the biggest names in pop and created a voice that was every bit as fun and irreverent as the stars it covered. But Smash Hits wasn't just about what you read—it was about what you experienced, too. Enter the Smash Hits Poll Winners Party: an annual live music extravaganza that brought fans closer than ever to their idols. From legendary performances to chaotic celebrity appearances (and plenty of surprise winners), the Poll Winners Party was the place where pop culture, fan hysteria, and unforgettable live moments collided. We'll relive some of the most iconic highlights, from jaw-dropping sets to the most unexpected award wins. As we unpack the legacy of Smash Hits, we'll talk about how it helped to bridge the gap between fans and pop stars, creating an intimate and playful connection that modern media has struggled to replicate. What made its interviews, song lyrics, and "bizarre-but-brilliant" features so unique? Join us as we reminisce about those sticker-covered issues, the cherished centerfolds on bedroom walls, and the Poll Winners Party memories that defined a generation. Whether you were team Bros, loved a bit of Bananarama, or just wanted to learn all the words to your favorite songs, Smash Hits was there for it all—celebrating the joy, the silliness, and the sheer brilliance of pop music. Talk2TheHand is an independent throwback podcast run by husband and wife, Jimmy and Beth. Obsessed with 90s nostalgia and 90s celebrities, we'll rewind the years and take you back to the greatest era of our lives. New episodes bursting with nostalgia of the 90s released on Tuesdays. Please subscribe to our podcast and we'll keep you gooey in 1990s love. Find us on Twitter @talk2thehandpod or email us at jimmy@talk2thehand.co.uk or beth@talk2thehand.co.uk

From Huddersfield to Bangkok, pop fans - are you ready for an adventure? Join Joel and David as they kick start a new ‘Discovering' series where they each pick a hidden gem of an artist from the 2000s and select 5 songs from their catalogue for a taste test! Signed to Jive Records and launched in 1999, British pop starlet Ellie Campbell looked and sounded like a ready-made pop star here for the GMTV and Smash Hits audience! Despite having no formal singing or dance training, Ellie's warm soulful tone and star quality was undeniable. The Yorkshire songstress worked with same hitmakers behind Steps (Pete Waterman, Mark Topham, Karl Twigg), launched a handful of singles - including the UK Top 30 smash ‘So Many Ways' - and even found herself performing at the Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras! Though she wasn't in the pop game for long, Ellie's bops are forever - and her self-titled album “Ellie” is a real gem! Before LISA from BLACKPINK, in the 2000s, the world had Thai pop princess Tata Young. Her crossover success in Japan, India, China and across Southeast Asia was pretty much unheard of. Thanks in huge part to her fun signature banger and your new favourite bratty anthem: ‘Sexy, Naughty, Bitchy' (co-written by legendary pop songwriter Savan Kotecha, who has worked with Ariana Grande, Britney, One Direction, and Dannii Minogue). Tata's catalogue of English tunes is top-tier, as she brings her Main Pop Girl Energy to songs that would be released in the West by Ashley Tisdale, The Cheetah Girls, Play and more. The writing credits on her three English albums read like a ‘who's who' of RBAY! royalty - Jamelia, Leona Lewis, Natasha Bedingfield, Samantha Jade etc. If you're liking this ‘Discovering' concept - let Joel and David know in the comments who you'd like us to cover next! “Four more years! Four more years!” Could you have ever imagined, when these two miscreants launched I Dream of Cameras on 11/20/20, that four years later the show would be an unstoppable juggernaut and the toast of seven continents? Neither could we! In this epic-sode, Gabe dons a dopey hat and Jeff a dopey visage to reflect upon IDOC's journey from to zygote to Smash Hit. There's a quiz! A truce! A song! A rundown of panoramic aspect ratios! Tune in for all the persiflage and badinage, which is NEVER, EVER BORING!It's our fourth anniversary show, and Gabe wore a stupid hat! Celebrate four years of our Smash Hit Podcast™ by giving us notes!Gabe went to a Beers and Cameras meetup at Canyon Coffee in Echo Park…… and William Piper let him try his Plaubel Makina 67 - but Gabe has an issue with it!Gabe quizzes Jeff about how well he knows his podpartnerJeff bought himself a birthday present, the rare and coveted 24mm Angenieux for the Alpa… waited all day for it to arrive… and the mailman passed him by! Rolling Stones guitarist, Ronnie Wood discusses his parallel career as an artist. As a new exhibition of his work opens at the Andrew Martin showroom in London, Ronnie talks about how he has drawn inspiration from Delacroix, Caravaggio and Picasso. As a new three part series Boybands Forever starts on BBC2 and the iplayer, we explore what was behind the rise and fall of the boybands of the nineties and noughties with Richie Neville of Five and Hannah Verdier from Smash Hits. Pianist Mishka Rushdie Momen performs from her new album Reformation, a collection of pieces by Tudor-era composers William Byrd, John Bull, Orlando Gibbons and Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck.Presenter: Tom Sutcliffe Producer: Ruth Watts
In this episode — recorded on the somewhat sombre Wednesday after the U.S. elections — we welcome the wonderful Beverley Glick to our Hammersmith lair and ask her about her New Romantic nom de plume Betty Page. Beverley tells us about her early days on Sounds, where she started out as editor Alan Lewis' secretary, and talks us through her seminal 1980 encounters with Spandau Ballet and Steve Strange. Her subsequent early interview with Duran Duran leads us to clips from David Keeps' 1993 audio interview with the Brummie band's frontman Simon Le Bon. After touching briefly on Depeche Mode, whom Beverley also interviewed very early on, our guest revisits the short-lived Noise! — Sounds' very own attempt at "doing" a Smash Hits — and recounts her subsequent path to the editorship of the rather longer-standing Record Mirror. Memories of mad moments with Happy Mondays (for Vox), and Beverley's eventual graduation to national newspapers, take us to her decision to forsake journalism for a career as a life coach specialising in "leadership communication" — and as the author of this year's In Your Own Words. A few glum thoughts on the political distortion of words such as "freedom" segue into our homage to the brilliant and outrageous Quincy Jones. Mark then quotes from newly-added library pieces about the Who (1965) and Ronnie Scott (1979)... and Jasper wraps up the episode with his thoughts on articles about "Brazilian Prince" Ed Motta (2006) and Tricky's magnificent Maxinquaye (2023). Many thanks to special guest Beverley Glick. For more Beverley, including info on her books and coaching, visit beverleyglick.com. Pieces discussed: Spandau Ballet: The New Romantics — a Manifesto for the Eighties, Visage: Stranger In Town, How I Discovered Duran Duran. Or Did They Discover Me?, Duran Duran's Simon Le Bon audio, Quincy Jones Has a Story About That, The Who, Ronnie Scott: King Of Clubs, The World of Ed Motta and Tricky: Maxinquaye (Reincarnated) (UMR/Island)
You'll know Miranda Sawyer from the Observer and the radio and, possibly, from her days at Smash Hits and Select magazines that form the foundation of her new book, Uncommon People: Britpop and Beyond in 20 Songs, a time spent watching, interviewing and hanging out with the collection of misfits and outsiders fast becoming the last great musical movement this country ever saw. This pans in on the period between April 1993, Select's ‘Yanks Go Home' cover, and August 1997 when Oasis released Be Here Now. A ton of highlights, among them … … why bands hated the term Britpop – and who invented it. … when your life in your 20s becomes history and period drama. … are Oasis conservative or just “classically Northern”? … why Britpop was the last hurrah of the traditional media. … the long slow burn of Jarvis Cocker and the rise of the Beta Male. … the impact of Select's famous Union Jack ‘Yanks Go Home' cover. … why Edwyn Collins was the Godfather of Indie (and Britpop) and the song that never stopped selling. … Ric Blaxill at Top of the Pops, Matthew Bannister at Radio One and other unsung architects of Britpop. … lava lamps, swirly rugs, space hoppers and the charity shop tat that replaced the matt black shiny ‘80s. … Jarvis v Jackson, Blur v Oasis and other great engines of the tabloid press. … “Manchester had the bands and the mythmakers (Tony Wilson, Paul Morley) …” … why the weekly music press was the Twitter of its time. … comparing Blur in ‘90s clubs to Wembley Stadium in 2023. … will Oasis be the last ‘household name' band? … could Britpop have happened without the press? Nick Heyward was one of our favourite cover stars when we were at Smash Hits in the ‘80s, the days when hardcore Haircut One Hundred fans turned out in Fair Isle sweaters and Sou'Westers. He now lives mostly in Florida, he's made nine solo albums – one magnificently titled Open Sesame Seed - and he's toured again with his old band after ten years' painful separation. Touring the UK in October, he couldn't be more upbeat about the road ahead – “I can do anything!” – and looks back here at the first shows he saw and played himself. Which involves … … seeing Count Basie, Ray Charles and Oscar Peterson on the same bill when he was 12. … “if you stop playing music you're like the boxer that gave up the fight”. … pop dress codes, knock-off pop merchandise and trips to Shellys Shoes. … growing up in Beckenham where Bowie was “the lighthouse beam that made being a pop star possible”. … old schoolfriends and Haircut One Hundred members Les and Graham and how “we got our friendship back”. … why seeing XTC was “like plugging into electricity”. … Buzzcocks and Boomtown Rats at the Croydon Greyhound. … how he was saved by management. … singing Love Plus One in Salisbury Cathedral. … and the lingering thrill of his first reviews (by Graham K Smith and Adrian Thrills).
