One of the most anticipated shows of Mickey-Jo's most recent trip back to New York has been the new production of ROMEO & JULIET at The Circle in the Square Theatre on Broadway. This new staging of the show is directed by Sam Gold and stars Kit Connor (Heartstopper) and Rachel Zegler (West Side Story). Send us a Text Message.Catherine Filloux dropped into the Playwright's Spotlight before the New York Premiere of her new play How to Eat an Orange. We spoke about her development and involvement in Theatre Without Borders and transitioning from an actor to playwright which would later push her into becoming a librettist for operas. She explained the structure of a libretto, the purpose of arias, developing characters and writing for range. We also touched on the dramatic question, theatrical perspectives, framing and shaping your play, and whether or not there is one thing that all playwrights should be doing. Catherine brings her knowledge and experience to this episode that I think everyone listening will walk away with something. Enjoy!  Catherine Filloux is an award-winning playwright who has been writing about human rights and social justice for over twenty-five years. Her plays have been produced around the U.S. and internationally. HAILEY KILGORE has a lot to say about Ti Moune, the character she plays in the Tony-nominated revival of Once On This Island: "She is a powerhouse. She knows what she wants. She's going to go and do it." The same can be said for the 19-year-old Tony nominee. The Michael Arden-helmed production of Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty's musical began performances at the Circle in the Square Theatre in November 2017. In just over six months, Kilgore has become a fresh-faced Broadway star, winning the hearts of audiences and critics alike. Tony winner LaChanze, currently starring in Summer: The Donna Summer Musical, garnered her first nomination for originating the roleback in 1991. Now, LaChanze and Kilgore are facing each other in the stacked Leading Actress in a Musical category. Kilgore has always been a go-getter as well as a devout Ariana Grande fan and a pageant queen. Like Ti Moune, she's someone who knows what she wants and is going to go and get it. The young talent stopped by Show People with Paul Wontorek to tell us where she's been, and where she's headed.

Susan H. Schulman: In March of 1994, not long after the close of her hit Broadway production of The Secret Garden, Susan H. Schulman sat down with Director Melvin Bernhardt to discuss her life in the theatre. Ms. Schulman walks a captivated audience of early-career Directors and Choreographers through her career to date, spanning neighborhood shows on her family's Brooklyn stoop as a small girl through her most recent Broadway production. We learn that it all began for her in the garage studio of 'Miss Harriet's School of Ballet' in Brooklyn, leading her to matriculate as the (self-labeled) "worst dancer in the class" at New York's prestigious High School of the Performing Arts. Her directing career stemmed from years as a performer at Hofstra University as an undergraduate. After being told that women could not apply to the Yale School of Drama graduate directing program, Susan attended Yale as a playwright for her graduate studies and kept directing none the less. This yearn to direct at any costs won her productions first in Buffalo, then at the Equity Library Theatre in New York, and then a season of musicals at the Civic Light Opera house in Pittsburgh. Susan explains how she came to direct musical theatre so masterfully and on such a grand scale, while not initially being able to read music. Her method understanding the music: taking children's piano lessons. Equally impressive are the unlikely circumstances under which she moved her York Theatre company production of Sweeney Todd from a school gym to a Broadway home at Circle in the Square Theatre. This 90 minute interview continues with insights on the collaborative process, Susan's opinions on the American Musical, and advice to the young theatre makers in attendance. It is a conversation not to be missed by any artist interested in the work ethic necessary to make it to Broadway.Originally recorded - March 14, 1994. Running Time - 1:18:41 ©1994 SDCF

A lineup of famous Yankees from several eras past and present are on the same stage in Bronx Bombers, a new play now running at the Circle in the Square Theatre. Babe Ruth and Derek Jeter are the roster bookends in Robert Simonson's play, which centers on famed catcher Yogi Berra, played by Peter Scolari. The play’s first act is set in 1977, when Berra was a coach with the Yankees. In the second act, the dimension of time is set aside, allowing a meeting of legendary Yankee team members. New York Times theater critic Charles Isherwood lets us know whether Simonson has hit a theatrical home run or a strikeout with Bronx Bombers.
