"Surrender means the decision to stop fighting the world and start loving it instead." – Marianne Williamson, A Return to LoveHave you ever found yourself clinging to control, thinking it would bring you safety, only to realize it held you back? What if surrender isn't about giving up, but about embracing love and allowing life to flow?In this episode of Love & Learn, we explore the transformative power of surrender as taught in Marianne Williamson's A Return to Love: Reflections on the Principles of a Course in Miracles. We dive into how surrender opens the door to acceptance and peace, allowing us to release the burdens of control and fear around food, relationships, and our career. In this episode, we'll uncover:The connection between surrender and self-acceptanceWhy letting go of control can lead to deeper connections with ourselves and othersPractical ways to cultivate surrender in your daily lifeInsights on how surrender invites miracles and breakthroughsWhether you're struggling with the need for control or are ready to embrace the unknown, this episode offers actionable insights to help you find freedom through surrender.Press play to start transforming your relationship with control and experience the peace that comes from surrendering to love.Actionable steps to practice surrender in your life:Pause and Reflect: When you catch yourself trying to control a situation or feeling overwhelmed, take a moment to pause. Reflect on how this need for control is affecting you. Ask yourself: What is trying to control this situation doing to my mind, body, and soul? Suffering is caused by resistance. Suffering = Pain x Resistance. When we resist change in our life we suffer.Allow yourself to recognize where control and resisting uncertainty is creating stress and preventing you from experiencing peace and new pathways.Use the I Don't Know Mantra: When you feel stuck in fear or uncertainty, use the mantra “I don't know.” or “I don't know, but God does”. Silently repeat it to yourself, opening up to the freedom that comes with not having to have all the answers. You can either fear the mystery of life or love it. Loving it will open your heart and mind to possibilities and leave you with much greater peace in the present, which is where we create from.Set an Intention to Surrender: Choose one situation where you feel tension or anxiety. Consciously set the intention to surrender it. This doesn't mean you're giving up; rather, you're choosing to let go of the emotional weight and persistent anxiety it carries. Say to yourself, "Dear God or Dear Universe, I'm feeling anxious about this, but I'm willing see it differently. I'm willing to trust your guidance and the process".Surrender is about finding freedom. The Purpose of Suffering: Pain, Vulnerability, & the Sacred Heart of Jesus www.spiritandspire.com
The question of why a loving God would allow suffering and pain is a complex and deeply theological one. God is all-knowing, all-powerful, and all-loving, and he created the world to be perfect and free from suffering and death. However, when Adam and Eve sinned, they brought a curse upon the world, which resulted in disease, and other forms of suffering. Suffering and pain need not be meaningless but can be used by God for a greater purpose. The Bible teaches that suffering can produce perseverance, character, and hope (Romans 5:3-5), and that God is able to work all things together for good for those who love him (Romans 8:28). God is present with us in our suffering and that he understands our pain because he himself suffered on the cross. Jesus Christ is described as a "man of sorrows" who was "familiar with suffering" (Isaiah 53:3), and he is able to sympathise with our weaknesses and struggles (Hebrews 4:15). The question of why a loving God would allow suffering and pain is answered by the belief that God is sovereign over all things, that he is present with us in our suffering, and that he can use our suffering for a greater purpose. We also must remember that ultimate hope and healing come through faith in Jesus Christ, who conquered sin and death and offers us forgiveness and eternal life – where there will be no pain, suffering or death. The world we live in now is broken. It's not meant to be our home. We're not meant to like it here. This is our mission field, until God calls us into eternity with Him.

An Update on Our Targeted Thinking Protocol In our last +1, we continued our discussion about what to do when you're going 0 for 12 in life and discussed the importance of doing that ONE thing that is most important RIGHT NOW. Then, because I can't go longer than a few +1s without referencing my tattoo that serves as the one-word summation of my entire philosophy, we brought my right forearm into the discussion and celebrated the ancient word ARETE. (Cue Maui from Moana's “You're welcome!” for the incessant repetition. ) Today I want to chat about YET ANOTHER way to win that ultimate game of life—closing the gap between who you're CAPABLE of being and who you're ACTUALLY being RIGHT.THIS.SECOND! It's time to chat about Targeted Thinking. (Again.) Since our last chat, I've refined my thinking on it. Here's how I currently practice and teach it. (See Basic Training Objective 2, Lesson 5 for more!) Actually… First… Here's how I framed it in that +1 from a couple of years ago. Step 1 of Targeted Thinking is to step out of Victimland and take a step into Heroicland by asking ourselves a simple question: WHAT DO I WANT? Note: Victims complain about what's not working in their lives. Creators create what they want in their lives by asking THAT question. (See Power of TED* for more.) Then, once you've gotten even an inkling of clarity on what you want in any given moment, the follow-up question is simple: NOW WHAT NEEDS TO GET DONE? In prior +1s, we brought that wisdom to life with discussions about its efficacy in dealing with chicken poop and flat tires. Today I want to hone our practice by adding a few more steps to the Targeted Thinking protocol. Yes, knowing what you want is ESSENTIAL to the process of living Heroically and creating a better life. And, of course, taking action in pursuit of creating that ideal, is also essential. And… Before we even get to asking ourselves what we want, I think we need to step back an inch or three and ACCEPT REALITY EXACTLY AS IT IS. This is what Byron Katie describes as “Loving What Is.” Which, as we've discussed, is just a modern take on the ancient Stoic practice known as “The Art of Acquiescence.” (See the +1 on Suffering = Pain x Resistance and the +1 on Deo Volente + Thy Will Be Done for more.) So… Step 0 with our updated Targeted Thinking protocol is simple: Acceptance—complete and utter acceptance of EXACTLY what is happening right now. Period. That, of course, is much easier said than done but the wisest among us get the power of this practice. Then… Once we've stopped arguing with reality (reminding ourselves that we will ALWAYS lose when we argue with reality!) we are ready for the first step in our protocol. Step 1. Asking ourselves: WHAT DO I WANT? Feeling energetically sluggish? Unproductive or lacking purpose at work? Disconnected from yourself and/or your loved ones? Perfect. Accept that. Now… What do you want? To feel Heroically Energized? Heroically (and Purposefully) Productive? Heroically Connected? Awesome. Spend THREE SECONDS (!) getting a little more clarity on that. Note: We're not talking about a 3 months worth of 30-minute journaling sessions to get clarity. SPEND THREE SECONDS RIGHT IN THE MOMENT YOU FEEL WOBBLY THINKING ABOUT WHAT YOU WANT. Got it? Awesome. That's Step 1. Step 2. Ask yourself: What can I do RIGHT NOW that would take me one step closer to getting more of what I want? AGAIN: We don't need a 101-page polished strategic plan you're going to submit to some higher authority for a grade here. SPEND THREE SECONDS RIGHT IN THE MOMENT YOU FEEL WOBBLY THINKING ABOUT WHAT YOU CAN DO RIGHT NOW TO GET MORE OF WHAT YOU JUST DECIDED YOU WANT. Got it? Awesome. That's Step 2. Now we're ready for Step 3. This is, unquestionably, the most important of all the steps but it's useless unless you do the first ones. Here it is… Step 3. TAKE ACTION. SPEND THREE SECONDS GETTING INTO ACTION DOING THE THING YOU DECIDED YOU NEED TO DO TO GET MORE OF WHAT YOU JUST DECIDED YOU WANT. (Yes, that's a lot of ALL CAPS. ) To recap. Step 0. Accept your current reality. Step 1. Create a Target of what you want. Step 2. Decide what you can do RIGHT NOW to move in the direction of your desired outcome. Step 3. Take action. Final step? +1. REPEAT that process. All day. Every day. ESPECIALLY TODAY, Hero. Day 1. All in. Let's go! +0. +1. +2. +3. +1.

This episode (an essay, a memoir, and a philosophical exploration of the mind/body connection) explores the toll chronic pain and physical illness can take on mental health. I reminisce, talk to a friend, and then remember some of the strategies I've found helpful. Don't forget: Suffering = Pain x Resistance.

The psychologist Carl Jung said that “What you resist not only persists, but will grow in size.” So when you're trying to avoid, ignore or shove down an experience or emotion, thinking that if you do, it will go away you are actually making it grow. It becomes your reality. This is especially true with pain. Meditation and self compassion help with pain in 5 different ways. 1- It helps you pay attention to your pain--find out what it actually feels like in your body instead of trying NOT to feel it. Once you do that, you can easily recognize when your body is NOT in pain. You can then maximize the not painful moments. Build on them. Become the good moments instead of the bad ones. Do something with the good ones instead of wasting them away. 2- Pain is three parts: sensory (toe throbbing because I stubbed it) emotional (I yelp and feel stupid) cognitive (now I can't wear my favorite shoes or walk as fast which means I wont' get enough stuff done and my whole day is ruined). Meditation helps separate these three aspects of pain and helps us realize the lies we tell ourselves about the pain. i.e. the unneeded suffering we cause ourselves. 3- Studies show that a willingness to turn toward our pain actually helps it heal faster. Self compassion is a great tool for turning toward pain. 4- Mediation shrinks your lizard brain--your amygdala- the one that causes the fight or flight response. When we shrink this part of our brain we can more easily regulate our emotions and think for ourselves instead of letting the lizard brain do it for us. This is key to controlling suffering and also controlling how we will respond to our pain. 5- Studies show that the anticipation of pain decreases when practicing meditation and self compassion. This is a big one for chronic pain. You know the pain will happen...but meditation can help you decrease your suffering because the anticipation of the pain will decrease.

The true story of Victorian times the dark underside of the blooming prosperity and progress man's pursuit of happiness and fulfilment, of desire and lust and it's aftermath of agonising pain and a sense of shame
Today Kristin shares a little of her story and talks about trying to understand God in the midst of pain and suffering. She also talks about God's love for us and how that can overcome our shame and guilt because of what has happened to us. https://www.fathersloveletter.com/ This is the link for the letter talked about on today's episode. You can download a pdf of the letter, or listen to it being read on this website.
Suffering = Pain x Resistance. When pleasure and grasping are included, the formula can be rendered as: Suffering = Experiential Intensity x Reactivity. This opens up two pathways to end suffering: remove pain (experiential intensity) or eliminate reactivity. Buddhism is about practicing with reactivity, because that's the factor we can bring under our control. There is freedom from suffering (based on freedom from reactivity), but there is also freedom to reduce pain when that's possible. This leads to a question about “Engaged Buddhism” or as this talk explores: the “Buddhism of Engagement.” Engagement, based on freedom, comes from what we choose to do, not from what we feel we have to do.

Oh resistance. The trouble it causes us. The more we resist a situation, the more suffering that ensues. This episode introduces a technique to become aware of and lower your own resistance as a key to inner peace and healing. Suffering = Pain x Resistance Transformation = Pain x Mindfulness 1. Name a situation in your life that you are currently resisting. Write out the situation and add: "and that's not ok." 2. How does the resistance manifest? (thoughts, beliefs, reactions, body sensations, emotions) 3. Is it possible that the resistance might be benefitting you? If so, how? 4. How might resisting your situation be making it worse? 5. How might your life be easier with less resistance? 6. How might mindfulness and self compassion help you lower the resistance?
My guest this week is psychiatrist Dr. Stuart Eisendrath, who specializes in mindfulness-based treatment of depression. We discussed his new book, When Antidepressants Aren’t Enough: Harnessing the Power of Mindfulness to Alleviate Depression (affiliate link), in which he describes the need for more effective depression treatments. Unfortunately millions of people find that medication alone fails to provide adequate relief from depression. In this episode you'll hear Dr. Eisendrath describe the power of mindful awareness in the treatment of depression, and what led him and his team to adapt mindfulness-based cognitive therapy for the treatment of active depression. There’s a lot to take from this conversation if you or someone you love is depressed and has struggled to find relief. For example, my guest explains what it means to develop a different relationship with our depression symptoms, and offers very helpful metaphors to illustrate mindful responses to depressing thoughts. Other topics we discussed included: The results of the STAR*D depression treatment trial, showing that only about one-third of people with depression get adequate relief from medication alone What it means to change one’s relationship with depression The pioneering work of Zindel Segal and his colleagues in developing mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) What led Dr. Eisendrath and his team to modify MBCT to treat active depression What major depression feels like My guest’s own experience of depression The downside of putting stories onto our pain, versus just observing and being with it The formula of “Suffering = Pain x Resistance” The fear of future suffering in depression How to respond to thoughts like “I won’t be able to stand this” Why mindfulness teachings often emphasize being more connected to our bodies What “acceptance” means in mindfulness practice, and why it’s different from resignation The effectiveness of different forms of mindfulness practice The power of mindful walking The importance of consistent practice in mindfulness Examining thoughts mindfully The effectiveness of simply noticing unhelpful thoughts, without generating alternative thoughts Why our most compelling negative thoughts are the most likely to be false How your mind is often not your friend when you’re depressed Why your thoughts are often fake news What decentering is and why it’s helpful Click the link for Dr. Eisendrath's free guided meditations. To find mindfulness-based cognitive therapy near you, visit AccessMBCT.com. Stuart Eisendrath, MD, is a senior clinician and research psychiatrist at the University of California-San Francisco, and founding director of the UCSF Depression Center. Dr. Jeanette welcomes Robert Crown, author of Suffering Ends When Awakening Begins, to share his life story of the pain and struggles of his life. Just how much struggle and pain can a human being take in this lifetime? Perhaps the answer is: 'the human experience is a part of the total soul existence and there are eons to dance within.' Dr. Jeanette Why is there so much chaos and disharmony around you; it is not about finding out what is wrong with you or fixing anyone else. It is that we are all awakening at different levels and in various time frames which is our own unique creation of self. Is all the strife that has come about the last ten years taken you to your knees or are you just now starting to notice things have been changing in this world? What are we creating and how can we find a way out of pain and struggle? In our last +1, we talked about A World Without Heroes and the fact that “A hero sacrifices for the greater good. A hero is true to his or her conscience. In short, heroism means doing the right thing regardless of the consequences.” Then we challenged ourselves to choose THIS DAY (!) to be one of them. Today we’re going to talk about some more brilliant metaphorical wisdom from Brandon Mull’s wonderful storytelling mind. Quick context: In Beyonders, our main characters gets transported to another world. In that world, an evil Emperor reigns. Few people have chosen to stand up to the Emperor. Those who look like they might be significant threats are harassed and, if they’re lucky, get invited to a place called Harthenham to enjoy the “Eternal Feast.” Basically, this is a place where you have ZERO issues. A place where you can enjoy all the most indulgent foods and pleasures you can imagine—where you have no worries at all and can literally live better than a king who has to worry about his kingdom. When presented with an invitation to Harthenham, many heroes give up their quest and cash in their ticket to the Eternal Feast—where they proceed to waste away the rest of their lives. I’ll save the spoiler alert about what happens with our young hero. Today we’ll focus on the brilliant metaphorical representation of OUR desires to get to a place where WE have no further toil or challenges. The Eternal Feast. (Doesn’t that sound scrumptiously inviting?!) We have a word for that. Exoneration. (Thanks, Phil + Barry!) Wouldn’t it be so amazing to no longer have to work so.darn.hard? No more bills to pay. Kids to feed. Laundry to fold. No more (often) overwhelming creative challenges. Or health issues. Or, well, ANY problems at all? Ahhh… Wouldn’t that be SO NICE?! Insert: Laughter. Plus: More laughter. Hah. Reminder: We will NEVER (!) be exonerated from challenges. And, the sooner we get that fact (and remember it when we forget it) the faster we’ll reduce the “Resistance” part of the “Suffering = Pain x Resistance” equation as we get back to practicing the ancient art of acquiescence and the modern art of loving what is. That’s Today’s +1. Let’s reject our invitation to the Eternal Feast. And get back to serving the greater good. Heroically. Today. (And tomorrow. And…)

The world before anesthesia was brutal -- surgeons inflicted torture on largely conscious patients, hoping to finish an operation as quickly as possible. But all of that changed with the introduction of inhaled ether. This episode covers the context behind the discovery of etherization, with myths about screaming medicinal plants, a “missing recipe” of medieval general anesthesia, 19th century recreational drug use, and a controversy carved in granite. In this very raw episode, E.J. shares his very powerful journey from 10 years as a heroin addict to rock bottom to a man that works day by day to give his best to his family. This is one of the most revealing I've ever been as E.J. and I set out to burn the blanket of shame. It takes massive courage to share a story like this, but it's a story that has the power to change or save a persons life. We confront the "BULLY" epidemic and address the simple notion that we all have sh*t, we all have baggage, we all have demons, and we're all trying to figure it out.. You don't need to be an addict to take away some amazing pearls of wisdom that unfold in this conversation. If nothing else, I hope it's just a refreshing take on some really complex topics. Thanks E.J. for all your strength.
In No Mud, No Lotus, Thich Nhat Hanh tells us that suffering is a part of life. You can’t create a beautiful lotus flower without some stinky mud. As he says, lotuses don’t grow in marble. And… You can’t create a happy, flourishing life without some suffering. That’s just how it is. We need to embrace that reality. In fact, Thay (as he’s known to his students) tells us that a big part of happiness is learning how to “suffer well.” We want to quit making our suffering worse than it needs to be. To bring the point home, the Buddha shared a story about two arrows. The first arrow strikes you and it hurts. But, if a second arrow hits you in the exact same spot, the pain won’t just double, it’ll go up TEN fold. (Ouch!) But, here’s the deal. WE are the ones shooting ourselves with that second arrow. How? By complaining about it, wishing it didn’t happen, moping around, etc. In Self-Compassion, Kristin Neff tells us the same thing in a slightly different way. She tells us that pain is inevitable in life but that suffering is a function of how much we resist that pain. She shares an equation: Suffering = Pain x Resistance. Pain happiness. Our suffering is a function of how much we resist it. Shoot ourselves with that second arrow and suffering goes up exponentially. So, let’s not do that. Today’s +1. Got any challenges in your life right now? Are you shooting yourself with a second arrow? If so, stop. Let’s accept that suffering is a part of life and remember: No mud, no lotus.
