Welcome to this special episode of China Compass, the fourth in a weekly series which I am calling “The Prison Pulpit”. I'm your China travel guide, Missionary Ben. One book that might be helpful is my little memoir, Unbeaten, which details my arrest, interrogation, and deportation from China in 2018. At the end of the book, I included an appendix entitled Remember My Chains, which is basically the manuscript (notes) from a message I have given dozens of times around the country dealing with this very topic: remembering and praying for the persecuted church, especially in China. God Raises Up (and Deposes) Kings On the basis of the teachings of the Bible and the mission of the gospel, I respect the authorities God has established in China. For God deposes kings and raises up kings. This is why I submit to the historical and institutional arrangements of God in China. As a pastor of a Christian church, I have my own understanding and views, based on the Bible, about what righteous order and good government is. A new swimming world record, a first singles tennis gold and a string of historic moments to remember — the Chinese delegation ended its Paris Olympic campaign on a high note with resounding success both on and off the field. As the Olympic flame went out after an extraordinary show of human strength and endurance for two weeks, Team China's outstanding performance, highlighted by a record haul of 40 gold medals, the adorable nature of young athletes and their friendly exchanges with their foreign peers, was enshrined in the history of the Games in the French capital.Bolstered by the whopping contribution of 27 gold medals from its six traditionally strong sports — diving, table tennis, badminton, gymnastics, shooting and weightlifting — the Chinese delegation finished with 40 gold medals and a total haul of 91 in Paris, surpassing its previous record at the London Games in 2012 to achieve the nation's best outcome in gold medal tally at any overseas edition of the Summer Olympics. At Beijing 2008, it won 48 gold medals and 100 overall. On Sunday, the United States edged past China to finish on top of the Paris Olympics chart with a total medal haul of 126, including 40 golds. The first-ever clean sweep of all eight gold medals up for grabs in the Olympic diving discipline by China's "dream team" and the world-conquering Chinese table tennis squad's complete collection of all five titles have only cemented the nation's stranglehold on these sports.More encouraging, a series of major breakthroughs — such as China's first tennis singles Olympic gold, won by women's ace Zheng Qinwen, swimming prodigy Pan Zhanle's world record-breaking win in the men's 100m freestyle and teen cyclist Deng Yawen's trailblazing golden finish in BMX freestyle park — have all heralded China's strong foray into Western-dominated sports with much balanced athletic prowess.Zhou Jinqiang, vice-president of the Chinese delegation, said on Sunday at a news conference in Paris that the overall performance at the Games could be summed up with one word-"breakthrough"."We reached new heights in terms of the total number of gold medals won (at an overseas edition) and the number of events that we first won medals in. We also proved that our athletic strength has been significantly expanded to more sports," said Zhou.Zhou added that the Chinese delegation has successfully completed its mission and realized its goals.Sun Yingsha, world No 1 in women's table tennis, said that China's overall prosperity and strength have served as a proud source of motivation for all her fellow Olympians."It's really an honor, and we all played confidently, knowing that a strong home country is supporting us," Sun said, after helping her squad beat Japan 3-0 in the women's team final on Saturday to secure China's 300th gold medal at the Summer Olympics since the Chinese delegation's debut at Los Angeles 1984.By putting their colorful and vibrant images on full display at the pinnacle of their careers, China's modern-day Olympians have broken the stereotypes portrayed by Western media about their hard-working but sometimes reticent predecessors decades ago, representing a more open and confident generation of athletes who no longer hide their light under a bushel. In addition, being able to speak directly to the international audiences in fluent English has certainly helped this generation more.Chen Yiwen, who won two diving gold medals, in individual 3m springboard and the synchronized event with partner Chang Yani, has broken the language barrier and bonded closely with some of her formidable foreign rivals, while also exuding confidence during her international media interviews in English.Chen's adorable selfies with teammate Chang and Australian rival Maddison Keeney, the silver medalist in 3m individual, have gone viral on social media platforms at home and abroad, earning thousands of likes for the "true embodiment of Olympic value".Speaking about the friendship with her Chinese peers, Keeney said: "I feel like these girls, they're like my sisters. I'm just really lucky to be able to have a positive competitive relationship with them. No matter what happens on the board, it doesn't affect our relationships outside."Reporter: Sun Xiaochen

Underrated and overlooked, the Chinese women's field hockey team has made its presence felt big-time at the pinnacle of the sport by upsetting European power Belgium in a dramatic semifinal to advance into its first Olympic final in 16 years. Entering Wednesday's semis against the world No 3 team, the Chinese squad put up a gutsy fight as resiliently as it has been fighting at these Games, starting strong with a second-quarter goal from Zou Meirong and staying composed after an equalizer scored in the dying minutes by Belgium's Emma Puvrez tied the match 1-1 at the end of regulation. After conceding two goals first in the nerve-wracking shootout, Team China kept its cool to score three back in a row. Goalkeeper Ye Jiao then rose to the high-stakes occasion, denying the Belgians' next three attempts with marvelous saves to secure Team China a final berth for the first time at an overseas Olympic Games. The last time China reached an Olympic final was at Beijing 2008 on home soil. As the lowest-ranked team in the semis at world No 6, Team China will continue fighting for a triumphant sequel to its David-vs-Goliath heroics when it challenges world No 1 the Netherlands in the Friday final at the Yves-du-Manoir Stadium in western Paris suburbs. Team China's head coach Alyson Annan, an Australian legend in the sport, said her girls will approach the final totally pressure-free. (We have) everything to win and nothing to lose," Annan, a two-time Olympic champion as a player, said after Team China's thrilling shootout win against Belgium on Wednesday.8月7日中国队以激动人心的点球大战战胜比利时后,作为两届奥运冠军的艾利森·安南说:“(我们有)一切可赢,却无所可失”。"We talked about this all the time since I started. We want to win a medal. We want to be on the podium in Paris. I almost say that at every single training. This is why we do this and we have to do this," Annan said of the confidence and mental strength she's installed within the team since she took over the Chinese program in 2022. After all the country's other collective ball-sport teams crashed out of the Paris Games, the Chinese women's hockey squad has provided the whole delegation with a morale boost by securing at least a silver medal in Paris. Hopefully what we did here could bring more attention to the sport in China, inspiring more girls to pick up a hockey stick and give it a try. As the undisputed favorite in all diving events, China is once again reigning supreme at the Olympic Games with two gold medals already secured in Paris, leaving the rest of the world impressed by its focus, consistency and collective strength. Chinese men's pair Yang Hao and Lian Junjie held their nerve and executed six perfect dives, despite mounting pressure from formidable rivals, to win the synchronized 10-meter platform final on Monday, keeping Team China's hopes of an eight-medal clean sweep in diving alive.7月29日男子10米跳台双人跳决赛,中国选手杨昊/练俊杰在五轮比赛中一路领先,保持状态,完成了六次完美的跳水,保持了中国队在跳水项目上零封八枚奖牌的历史。 Leading from the first round, Yang and Lian kept their dives complete and clean to score a total of 490.35 points and win their first Olympic title in the synchronized event, after having collected three world championship trophies together. Thomas Daley and Noah Williams of Britain executed near-flawless routines, but had to settle for silver after scoring 463.44 points. Canada's Rylan Wiens and Nathan Zsombor-Murray won bronze with 422.13 points. After reclaiming the men's synchronized platform title from Daley and his former partner, Matty Lee, who won it at Tokyo 2020, the Chinese pair attributed their golden Olympic debut to their mental resilience and solid training before the Paris Games.2020年东京奥运会戴利与其前搭档马蒂· 李携手斩获男子跳水双人10米台金牌。 There are no always-victorious athletes, or teams, in competitive sports. We just prepared the best we could and performed well on the day," said Yang, 26, a five-time world champion."Consistent performance comes from hard work on a daily basis. Overall, I think we just outworked most of our rivals in training, so that we could deliver when it matters," he added.26岁便已获得五次世界冠军的杨昊在接受采访时表示:“竞技体育中没有永远的赢家。 Daley, who made his Olympic debut at Beijing 2008, fell short of upsetting his mighty rivals again, after having almost single-handedly spearheaded the rest of the world's charge against the Chinese team in the past four editions of the Games. The 30-year-old diving celebrity, however, took pride in having at least proved that even China's "dream team" wasn't invincible. I am so incredibly happy to come away with another medal this time with Noah; the achievement is coming back to competition readiness within a year," said Daley, who reversed his retirement plan last year to go for a fifth Olympics, and has only trained with Williams in synchronized platform diving since November. China dived absolutely incredible today. Every single one of their divers is almost flawless. We were applying the pressure every single round, yet they didn't fall to it," he said, adding, "What's interesting is being able to have the hope and the belief that it's possible to beat the Chinese divers… they know how to perform the best in competitions. Team China got its ambition of claiming all eight diving titles up for grabs in Paris off to a flying start on Saturday after women's duo Chang Yani and Chen Yiwen secured the first one in the 3-meter synchronized springboard event at the Paris Aquatics Centre in Saint-Denis.7月27日,中国队在巴黎水上运动中心举行的跳水女子双人3米板决赛中,张昌雅妮/陈艺文夺得金牌,离本次奥运会包揽8枚跳水全项目金牌更进一步。Sarah Bacon and Kassidy Cook of the United States won silver, while British duo Yasmin Harper and Scarlett Mew Jensen won bronze. Performing five routines, the same as the Chinese women, in the final, the pair from the US tried to match their world champion opponents in execution, quality and synchronization. It turned out that Team China has dominated the same event six times in a row at the Olympics for a reason. The Chinese have been the gold standard in diving for decades," Cook said. "We studied a lot of their films, and we love watching them to learn from their dives. But we are also peers with them. Our goal is to beat them one day."Cook added: "Following them in the competition helps us do better. They are obviously putting the pressure on us, hitting the dives. They are kind of setting the standard. In a competition, I want to see good quality, and China forced us to have good quality to follow them up like that." “Dream Team”n.

China's world No. 1 team, Wang Chuqin and Sun Yingsha, have finally completed their major title collection by winning their first mixed doubles Olympic gold medal in Paris, paving the way for China's clean sweep of all five titles.7月30日,巴黎奥运会乒乓球混双决赛,中国组合王楚钦/孙颖莎以4-2战胜朝鲜组合,中国代表团拿下奥运会乒乓球混双项目首枚金牌,离获得五个乒乓球项目“金满贯”更进一步。Roared on by an enthusiastic crowd, mainly Chinese fans, at the South Paris Arena, Wang and Sun, the men's and women's reigning world No. 1 players respectively, held off a strong comeback from Ri Jong Sik and Kim Kum Yong of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) to prevail 4-2 in the high-profile final on Tuesday and secured the first gold medal up for grabs in table tennis at the Paris Olympics. Having won almost every major trophy together, including two mixed doubles world championship titles in 2021 and 2023, Wang and Sun relished their first Olympic gold together as a special one, particularly following Team China's final loss to host Japan in the mixed event's Olympic debut in Tokyo in 2021. This mixed doubles gold is probably the medal I wanted the most. I have to thank everyone around us who contributed to this win," said Wang, a six-time world champion across men's team, men's doubles and mixed doubles."It was the work and effort of everyone that helped us pull it off. We put in so much for this gold, it now all feels worth it. This is not just our glory, it belongs to the entire team." In the Tokyo Games mixed doubles final, Japanese pair Jun Mizutani and Mima Ito outlasted China's Xu Xin and Liu Shiwen 4-3 in a seven-set thriller to snatch the very first mixed doubles Olympic gold, denying China's attempt to bag all five gold medals. Now, with Tuesday's win opening its Paris 2024 campaign on a high note, Team China will go all out to achieve a gold medal clean sweep in Paris with four more events - men's and women's singles and teams - to go. I feel like a heavy stone was released from my heart. It was a big relief to get this one done. There are more to go for sure. Hopefully we could build on this opening victory to secure Team China's dominance in other events," said Wang. Sun attributed the triumph to the chemistry she's developed with Wang since they first started to play doubles in 2017. I'm thankful to my partner for all the work we put in over the last three years. We've known each other since we were kids and grew up together. We're pleased with the result today, and hope we'll be able to continue to do well in the coming events," she said.

While she may be a fan of cute hair clips and puppies like the rest of her peers, Huang Yuting is not your average teenager. As most of her classmates enjoy their summer holiday by hanging out with friends, going to the movies or shopping, Huang, a 17-year-old high school girl from Taizhou, Zhejiang province, will probably have the coolest summer memories of them all — going to Paris and winning an Olympic gold medal. And it wasn't just any random medal, but the very first gold up for grabs at the Paris Games — in the 10m air rifle mixed team — which got the Chinese delegation off to a scintillating start at the world's biggest sporting extravaganza. Huang, and fellow teen shooter Sheng Lihao, held their collective nerve to outgun South Korea's Park Ha-jun and Keum Ji-hyeon 16-12 with poise and marksmanship beyond their years, winning the high-stakes final at the Chateauroux Shooting Centre, 250 kilometers south of Paris, on Saturday. Her golden Olympic debut has turned Huang into a household name overnight in China, drawing instant interest in her upbringing, hobbies and even the accessories she wears — just like what happened with her senior counterpart Yang Qian, winner of Team China's first gold in Tokyo three years ago in the women's individual 10m rifle. The little barrette Huang wore to keep her long hair off her scope on Saturday soon became a trending topic on Chinese social media, reminding fans of a similar situation in 2021, when Yang's "yellow duck" hair clip ended up a best-selling item following her Tokyo Games win. Younger and fresher, Huang comes across as an even more composed shooter than Yang — who didn't qualify for Paris — as she kept her emotions in check throughout Saturday's final, even after having won the biggest prize of an athlete's career on her first try. It's basically all the same, as far as what I need to do in a competition," Huang said during a news conference when asked how different the Olympics feel compared to other events. "Of course, the Olympics naturally come with greater attention, and I just needed to improve my mental focus to avoid being distracted by whatever happened outside of my control. ""Perhaps we looked calm on the outside, but deep inside, we were very nervous. We just didn't show it. It's a great honor, a payback for what I've worked so hard for over the past year. It's a new beginning, though. I will start over from zero again," said Huang, who turns 18 in September. A student-turned-Olympic shooter, like many of her teammates in China's decorated national program, Huang started part-time shooting training in 2016 when she was drafted into a junior sports academy for her imperturbable and resilient character, according to her first coach Lin Kehan. She's had a big heart since she was little, and a competitive drive that made her always accomplish her assignments better than expected," Lin said of Huang's raw talent. Eight years on, the quiet, puppy-loving girl, who fills all her social media profile photos with adorable dog pictures, has impressed at the Olympics as one of world's most fearsome rifle shooters. Her partner Sheng is not short of talent either. The 19-year-old from Jiangsu province built on his silver-winning campaign in Tokyo to finish a step higher on the podium at his second Games in Paris. Three years ago, Sheng became the youngest shooter — at 16 years and 233 days — to win an Olympic medal, when he finished second in the individual 10m air rifle, an event he is expected to contend for gold in this time around in Paris. "I just did what I do, and took care of my business," a calm Sheng said after the final, where the Chinese team's 12-6 early advantage was cut to 14-12 toward the final round. "If the result goes our way, like it did today, we will happily take it and feel honored to win glory for our country. If it doesn't, then I am OK. It won't affect my preparation for the individual event in any way whatsoever." The final in the mixed event involves the two teams starting from zero, and the men and women each take shots in succession. The winning team in each round earns two points, while both teams each score one point in case of a tie. The first team to accumulate 16 points or more wins the match. Last time competing at the Olympics, I was quite nervous as a rookie. I was not mature enough mentally and technically," Sheng said of his progress. "I studied each of my competitions, focused more on training and, now, the Olympic gold has come naturally as a result of my hard work — and, perhaps, a little bit of luck." Youthful surge As one of the world's most successful teams in shooting at the Olympics, the Chinese contingent has racked up 67 medals, including 26 golds, at the Games since the country's Olympic debut in 1984. The surge of youthful power in the sport, underlined by the fact that all four rifle shooters in Paris were born after 2000, has heralded an even stronger future for the Chinese program, which boasts a tradition of identifying and developing talent early on from schools across the country. Professional and flexible training programs, customized to accommodate student athletes' school routines, and a transparent domestic trial system for major events, have seen the number of young aspirants mushroom in recent years. We've developed a lot of young athletes, who are never shy from taking responsibility and are all keen on proving themselves on the international stage," said Liang Chun, director of the national administrative center of shooting and archery. The maturing of China's next generation of talent has seen defending Olympic champion pair in 10m air rifle — Yang Qian and Yang Haoran — both knocked out of the Paris 2024 roster, proof of the program's deep talent pool, Liang said. They are young, but have both already pulled through many tests. We are confident in their future," Liang said of the success of Sheng and Huang. "I've always tried to remind our young athletes to not care too much about the results of one particular event. They all have a long way to go, and many more opportunities to realize their career goals." air riflen.

Want to help make soccer a cleaner and fairer sport? Sign up to become a supervisor. As part of China's ambitious soccer revival project, the Chinese Football Association has introduced a public supervision system, inviting ordinary fans, media representatives and local disciplinary inspectors to oversee daily operations of the sport's governing bodies at all levels and report any wrongdoings or disciplinary violations as whistleblowers. The move to get the masses involved was announced on Thursday, as former Chinese men's national team head coach Li Tie stood trial over allegations of bribery and match-fixing at a court in Xianning, Hubei province. Earlier this week, former CFA president Chen Xuyuan and four other officials of governing bodies were given prison sentences for corruption-related crimes, which have taken a heavy toll on the sport's profile and the integrity of domestic competitions in recent years. The supervision system is open to applicants who love the game of soccer, care about the sport's development, possess basic knowledge of the sport, and have administrative experience with a strong sense of social responsibility, according to a regulation released on the CFA website. Qualified public supervisors will be granted a wide range of responsibilities, such as hearing work reports from the CFA and providing feedback, overseeing league operations from player selection to referee assignment, collecting suggestions, and reporting any misconduct of officials, professional players and staff members of organizations involved in soccer development, the regulation said. Public supervisors will initially be appointed as volunteers for two years, with those making exceptional contributions to be eligible for reappointment. The CFA also announced on Thursday the introduction of a reward mechanism to encourage tips about violations such as match-fixing, gambling and bribery that manipulate competition results to tarnish fair play in the sport. Reports of such violations will be welcomed at all levels, targeting all competitions, organizations and wrongdoers, the CFA regulation said. Verified sources providing solid tips will be compensated with cash ranging from 2,000 yuan ($276) to 20,000 yuan, depending on the value of information. Those who make key contributions in exposing and cracking down on serious cases will be given extra rewards, the CFA said. As China pushes ahead with its goal of developing into a world powerhouse in the sport, a goal highlighted in a reform project approved by the State Council in 2015, the fight against corruption shall be carried on with tougher actions, CFA Party chief Zhang Jiasheng said. We have to continue fighting all disciplinary violations with stricter and more aggressive measures, and intensify anti-graft efforts at all levels to clean up the sport for good," Zhang, who is also a vice-minister of the General Administration of Sport, said at a meeting discussing soccer development and reform on Wednesday.3月27日,张家胜在足球发展和改革会议上说道:“我们要继续以更严厉、更严厉的措施打击各种违纪行为,加大各级反腐力度,坚决维护体育正风肃纪”。Observers said the introduction of external scrutiny will help improve the credibility of the governing body's anti-graft campaign, but more efforts are needed to guarantee that valuable feedback, suggestions and tips are respected, handled appropriately and implemented transparently. These new initiatives show the CFA's resolve to shake off the ill repute overshadowing the game. It's more important, though, to see how they can be implemented," said Han Qiaosheng, a former sports commentator with China Central Television. To meet a major goal highlighted in the soccer reform project, the Chinese men's team has been going all out to qualify for the FIFA World Cup, following its sole appearance in the tournament in 2002. A 4-1 Asian zone qualifier win at home against Singapore on Tuesday, the men's side's first international victory in four months, kept alive Team China's hopes of making the 2026 tournament and offered Chinese fans a rare reason to celebrate following years of struggle supporting their underachieving national squad. We've supported the national team through ups and downs without regret. We hope all the efforts will eventually pay off," said He Sheng, a die-hard fan and a volunteer referee with a level two national certificate, after watching the match in Tianjin. CFACourt of Final Appeal终审法院public supervision system公众监督制度disciplinary violation违纪行为

Led by a butterfly queen in red-hot form and the newly crowned breaststroke king, Chinese swimmers have capped their Asiad outing with a huge confidence booster for the upcoming Olympic campaign next year. With youngsters in their prime and revitalized veterans dominating the pool, the Chinese swimming contingent finished the six-day program at the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou with an all-time high of 28 gold medals among a best-ever total haul of 58 gongs at the continental sporting jamboree. The solid performances of China's reigning world champions and some promising young talent, after a hectic period featuring three major meets over two months, have raised expectations for the squad to make a splash at next year's Paris Olympics. The solid performances of China's reigning world champions and some promising young talent, after a hectic period featuring three major meets over two months, have raised expectations for the squad to make a splash at next year's Paris Olympics.Women's butterfly superstar Zhang Yufei and men's breaststroke specialist Qin Haiyang extended their success from the world championships in July to the Hangzhou meet, where Zhang overcame an illness to collect six golds to tie the individual title record at a single Asiad, while Qin repeated the historic breaststroke treble he claimed at the worlds in Fukuoka, Japan. They were among many Team China swimmers who competed at the World University Games in Chengdu, which were sandwiched between the worlds and the Asiad."The intensity of competing on the international stage as frequently as we did this year was exceptionally high, requiring a lot of hard work, discipline and sacrifice to pull it off, which I think we did," Qin said on Friday at the Hangzhou Olympic Sports Centre Aquatics Sports Arena, after winning the men's 50m in 26.35 seconds. The 24-year-old from Hunan province made himself a household name at the worlds in July when he became the first man in history to sweep all three breaststroke titles — 50m, 100m and 200m — in Fukuoka, while shattering Australian Zac Stubblety-Cook's former 200 world record with a blistering surge of 2:05.48.Joining Qin in lighting up the Hangzhou pool was women's reigning Olympic champion Zhang, who collected all three butterfly titles, a gold in 50m freestyle and two relay wins to equal Japanese swimmer Ikee Rikako's six-gold haul at the 2018 Asiad in Indonesia.Zhang achieved her medal tally despite an illness that took a heavy toll on her strength. The defending 200m fly Olympic champion couldn't even talk, due to a sore throat after she overcame fatigue and a fever on Thursday night to bring home gold in the 50m free final.Having withstood tough tests at three major meets in a row, Zhang, a fan favorite, said she could look forward to Paris 2024 with tons of confidence."Every race I swam this year, I did so preparing for Paris. I try to swim as many events as possible at every meet to improve my consistency and endurance so that I can step up a gear when needed in Paris," said the 25-year-old Jiangsu native. To the excitement of diehard swimming fans, the return of celebrated veterans, such as former women's medley star Ye Shiwen and men's backstroke specialist Xu Jiayu, to the international spotlight has enhanced Team China's medal credentials for Paris 2024.Ye, who shot to fame at the 2012 London Olympics by winning both individual medley golds (200m and 400m) at just 16, won her first Asiad gold in nine years, clinching the 200m breaststroke title on Thursday. Ye said she's set for a career rejuvenation at the age of 27."Despite winning gold, the result did not live up to my expectations to be honest, so I don't think I have reached my peak yet," the Hangzhou native said.Chinese swimmers rewrote Asiad records in 17 events in Hangzhou and collectively broke Asian records in six events — Tang Qianting in women's 50m breaststroke (29.92), Pan Zhanle in men's 100m free (46.97), Wang Shun in men's 200m individual medley (1:54.62) and three other relay events."I think Chinese swimming has completed the transition from the last generation of champions to the younger and stronger group of world-class swimmers," said breaststroke legend Luo Xuejuan, a bid ambassador for the Hangzhou Asiad."We have experienced swimmers remaining competitive and stars like Zhang and Qin in their prime. We have every reason to expect more champions to be crowned at Paris 2024,"said Luo, who won the women's 100m breaststroke at the 2004 Olympics.Reporter: Sun Xiaochen

With a huge lead of nearly 10 seconds, Chinese duo Zou Jiaqi and Qiu Xiuping claimed the first gold of the Hangzhou Asian Games, winning the lightweight women's double sculls title at the Fuyang Water Sports Centre on Sunday. We are thrilled to win the first gold of the Games. Before the first competition day, we didn't think too much about the result. The most important thing for us was to enjoy the Asian Games as much as possible. I believed we could win," Zou told China Daily.“我们很高兴能赢得本届运动会的第一金。 The duo is now firmly focused on reaching the highest step of the podium at next summer's Paris Olympics. As we earned our ticket to the 2024 Olympics, with the help of our coaches, at the world championships, our goal is claiming the title in Paris," said Qiu. Speaking of how they managed to win the gold in such style, the two highlighted persistence and experience. We have kept pushing ourselves and growing. We have put in a lot of hard work during years of training. I always say we should treat each training session like a major event final, but during an actual final, we just need to consider it one of our daily training sessions. We just need to do our best every single day, and we can achieve our goals," said Qiu. And for Zou, a native of Zhejiang, the Asian Games gold medal is particularly special. Fuchun is my mother river. When I was a kid, I grew up drinking its water, so it feels amazing to win the first gold medal of the Asian Games here. The Fuyang Water Sports Centre is very professional and I hope that more high-level events can be held here," said Zou. I want to thank all the people who have contributed a lot to help us get here. I can always feel the love and support of my family, friends and my fellow Zhejiang natives."" The 21-year-old Zou said that she always sees Qiu, who is two years older than her, as a big sister. Zou added that she was the quieter one of the two, but they can both be talkative and excited once they start rowing.21岁的邹佳琪称她总是把比她大两岁的邱秀萍当成姐姐。 I'm a very quiet person, but during the training sessions and competitions, I'm not quiet at all. We always encourage each other. In my eyes, my partner is brave, beautiful and persistent," said Zou. Qiu used the exact same three words to describe Zou. They are a "perfect match" both on and off the water. I'm usually the one who talks the most, while she listens patiently. Together we achieve our goals. Although she is quiet, she always offers great suggestions. I always tell others that we are a perfect match for each other," Qiu added. We don't only share the samegoals. For instance, during training, if there's an area in which I am not particularly strong, she is always good at it. That works both ways. It's really great to have a partner like her."" And if people think she's too quiet to encourage me, then they are wrong. She always helps and encourages me during tough times."“如果大家觉得她太安静不会鼓励我,那就错了。 Another athlete to shine on the first official day of competition was Chinese wushu star Sun Peiyuan, who won Team China's first gold medal at the 2018 Jakarta Asian Games. He once again reached the top step of the podium by winning the men's changquan title in Hangzhou. Compared with the Asian Games in 2014 and 2018, I am a lot more mature. I still remember in 2018, I was so nervous before the start of that competition, but this time, in Hangzhou, I just wanted to enjoy the Games as much as possible," said the 34-year-old Sun, who won his first Asian Games gold at Incheon 2014.“与2014年和2018年的亚运会相比,我成熟了很多。 Among all three golds that I have won, this is the most special. I was so confident when I stood on the mat, surrounded by the home crowd."" I want to promote wushu, so that more people can learn about, and embrace, the sport. I hope that one day wushu will be added to the Olympic program," he said."

President Xi Jinping will attend Saturday's opening ceremony of the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province, the Foreign Ministry announced on Thursday. The grand sports gathering is expected to create more opportunities to boost public fitness, enable the global community to better understand China and build up the nation's competitiveness in sports.Xi will also hold a welcoming banquet and bilateral events for visiting foreign leaders from Cambodia, Syria, Kuwait, Nepal, Timor-Leste, South Korea and Malaysia from Friday to Saturday, the ministry said. The president's personal participation in the upcoming Hangzhou Asian Games, as well as in the Beijing Winter Olympics last year and the Chengdu Universiade this past summer, represents a key part of his vision to build China into a strong country in sports, said analysts.Wang Xiaozan, a professor at Shanghai-based East China Normal University's College of Physical Education and Health, said that hosting three major sports events within a time span of less than two years has significantly enriched China's experience in this regard. It has improved sports infrastructure and spurred the public's enthusiasm for boosting their fitness, Wang said. She said the events will help the younger generation garner a high level of sportsmanship.“Most importantly, it will build up the nation's sports population, a key aspect of developing China into a country strong in sports,” she said. The 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, for example, fueled a national drive to get 300 million people involved in winter sports, an initiative set out by Xi in the bidding stages for the global sports event.International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach said during Xi's visit to the IOC headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland, in 2017 that the Chinese president has a clear vision of sports' important role in society and in the education of young people.Zheng Zhiqiang, a professor of sports industry and governance at Jimei University in Xiamen, Fujian province, highlighted the emphasis made by Xi, an avid sports fan, on steering China's sports development to a higher level.Xi said in an interview in 2014 that he likes swimming and mountain climbing, and is a fan of soccer, volleyball, basketball and tennis.Zheng said that Xi's interest and personal involvement in sports have given him a deeper understanding of the role of sports in social development. With the emphasis from the Chinese president, the public fitness campaign has become a national strategy, and building China into a strong nation in sports has become an important part of the Chinese dream, he said.Meanwhile, the past decade has seen significant progress in China's sports development, with Team China making major breakthroughs at Summer and Winter Olympics, as well as at other major global competitions. Moreover, public participation in sports has reached new heights, said Wang, the professor at East China Normal University.“The accessibility of sports grounds has improved remarkably in communities across the nation, and physical education has a much more important role in school curriculums,” she said. For the Chinese president, sports have also served as a major channel to build up ties with other countries and a bridge to reach out to local people. In a reply letter sent to the US-China Youth and Student Exchange Association and friends from the US state of Washington last month, Xi wrote that sports are “a bond that promotes friendship among peoples”.Over the years, Xi has visited the academy of English Premier League soccer club Manchester City, where he posed for selfies with the club's then star striker Sergio Aquero, and jointly watched with Russian President Vladimir Putin a friendly ice hockey match in Tianjin between Chinese and Russian youth teams. He also watched a friendly soccer match between Chinese and German youth teams in Berlin with then Chancellor Angela Merkel in 2017 and received a No 10 jersey of the Argentine national soccer team, the number worn by soccer superstar Lionel Messi, during a visit to South America in 2014.A strong country in sportsn.

The hashtag "Li Tieunder investigation" had been viewed over 600 million times in just fivehours by Saturday morning, with most netizens expressing their astonishment andfrustration at the troubles of Chinese soccer. From a star player to the head coach of Team China, Li Tie is nowunder investigation for suspected serious violations of discipline and law.Apart from astonishment, what we actually need is a comprehensiveinvestigation," read a commentary by Chinanews.com. As the Chinese saying goes, we have to 'dig out the carrot to seethe dirt', as we need to build a cleaner environment for Chinese soccer. Weshould leave no room for any illegal activities in Chinese soccer."“正如古话所说,我们应‘挖起萝卜带出泥',让中国足球环境更加清朗,让违法违纪行为无处藏身。”According to Beijing Youth Daily, Li's last public appearance was earlythis month when he attended a soccer clinic at a sports university in Shenyang,Liaoning province, where he posed for pictures with students. And the coach's emotionaloutburst after the game against Australia, when he branded his detractors"mental", only served to give his critics more ammunition. Li was engulfed in more controversy when he erased the logo of TeamChina's sponsor from pictures he posted on Weibo in November 2021. He was also accusedof using his position to plug several other products in the same post. All ofthese incidents culminated in his resignation as Team China head coach.2021年11月,李铁在微博上发布照片,照片中的国足赞助商标志却被去掉了,这引发了更多争议。 As a member of the only Chinese squad to play at a World Cup, in 2002,there had been high hopes for Li when he was installed in the job, with fansalso valuing his experience as a player at English top-flight club Evertonacross four seasons. However, all those expectations have evaporated now. Li Tie is an iconic name for Chinese soccer, and fans are veryfamiliar with him. (7:53) Chinese sprinter like Su Bingtian and his relay teammates are set to get an Olympic medal — nine months after Tokyo ended. (10:09) And China names its flagbearers for the closing ceremony (as predicted by Mark!) (11:24).Team China ice hockey goalie Kim Newell joins us from her hometown of Vancouver, where she's coming down from the high of Beijing (12:40). She talks about the competitiveness of China's group at the Olympics (13:52), explains what went right, what went wrong, and why it was so intense. (15:19) Next, she shares her highest high — coming back from a broken ankle in November and getting a win (17:07), and details the lowest low — when the team couldn't find a way to get through Sweden (19:22).Princeton grad Newell learned Chinese specifically to have a conversation with her grandfather and connect with her heritage (21:10), and she talks about her eye-opening month-long trip to China as a student (24:39), and how she realized her aim of connecting with her grandfather before he passed away (25:55). Next, she gives her take on the “translator incident” when she was banned from answering questions in English, but used it as a moment to get increased attention for women's hockey in China (27:22). Newell says she's hoping to get back to China as soon as possible to further interest in the game (32:19), and discusses what's going to happen with Kunlun Red Star next season (34:19). Finally, she gives her thoughts on whether China's strategy of bringing in naturalized and heritage players has been successful (35:41), and reveals whether she sees coaching in her future (40:27).See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

With the Omicron variant rampant worldwide, calls to postpone the Olympics have been growing louder. We discuss why that's simply not an option for China (1:04). The Olympic “closed-loop management system” went into operation this week. Here's how it works (6:17). More bad news for tennis in China as streaming platform iQiyi drops all WTA and ATP tournaments (9:40), and CGTN releases its new Olympic anthem. It's worth a watch/listen! (12:00)Our guest this week is Rachel Llanes, who doubles as a forward for the Chinese women's ice hockey team and as their strength and conditioning coach. She explains how the team has just returned to China, after playing in the Russian Women's Hockey League (13:56), how she's been putting her teammates through their paces despite being stuck in quarantine (15:07), how she copes with the pressure to overtrain (17:19), and what the past season has been like for her (18:38).Next, she describes how a walking tour in Saint Petersburg went awry (19:27), how she first got involved with the Chinese team (20:57), the team's stuttering progress after the loss of legendary coach Digit Murphy (22:41), how she didn't know she'd be eligible to play for China until November last year (24:27), and what exactly happened to finalize China's Olympic roster (25:08). Llanes also discusses the stringent testing and quarantine requirements she is currently undergoing (25:38) and reveals what the team is doing to prepare for their opponents at the Olympics (27:01), before giving her views on whether China can be a realistic medal threat (28:06).See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

On the show this week, a decision — finally — from the International Ice Hockey Federation: the Chinese men's team will be playing in the Olympic tournament (00:56). But they're facing the U.S. and Canada. Will the NHL All-Stars run up the score (2:13), and how are the Chinese players feeling about the prospect? Plus what's going on with the Team China squad, which is currently playing in Russia for the Kunlun Red Star team? (4:58) Meanwhile, one NHL player has already pulled out from the Olympics over concerns about COVID-related restrictions. Will others follow? (6:21) Elsewhere, the White House announces that there won't be an official U.S. delegation sent to the Olympics What impact, if any, will that have on the Games? (10:12)Chinese football is in dire straits right now. But how did we get here and what comes next? Haig and Mark talked to Nikki Wang, formerly with Deloitte China as head of sports business, where she advised the Chinese Super League; and to Tariq Panja from The New York Times (13:04).On the agenda: how Chinese soccer first got on the global football's radar, with stories of astronomical sums of money (17:08), the 20-something Englishman who seemingly popped up in most Chinese football deals (20:18), signs of progress in Chinese soccer, and parallels to soccer around the world (24:37), global superstars playing with vastly inferior Chinese teammates (28:17), commercial ramifications of signing big names (30:42), the relationship Chinese clubs have with their fans (32:47), whether anyone is still paying attention outside of China (35:13), Tariq's tales of coming to China during the boom years (37:56), Nikki's views from the inside of Chinese football (42:20), and why Chinese football fans are among the most resilient in the world (47:19).See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
