Bitpanda, one of Europe's leading investment platforms, has announced it is expanding its services to Ireland to meet growing demand for safe and secure access to digital assets. The platform will empower potential, first-time and seasoned Irish investors to take full control of their finances. Leading this growth is former CMO of MyWallSt and former Head of EMEA Growth at Hailo, Rob Cumiskey, now Country Lead and Head of Marketing for Bitpanda in Ireland. ERIC DEMUTH, co-founder and CEO of Bitpanda, says “At Bitpanda, we are setting the bar for retail investing in Europe with regulation and security for digital assets and bringing a trusted, seamless and secure trading experience to all. As recent events have shown, where you invest matters. We are giving European investors a better choice because we believe that digital assets and blockchain technology are reinventing what it means to invest, and we remain committed to building simple, easy-to-use, and fully regulated financial products for everyone.” Rob Cumiskey, Country Lead and Head of Marketing for Bitpanda in Ireland added: “'We have a growing community of Bitpanda users in the Irish market, which doesn't surprise us at all given the early adopter nature of the market. With this in mind, we have been investing in our local Bitpanda team and we want to make sure that we have the best possible product based on local needs across Europe. I personally can't wait to lead our growth efforts here and show Ireland what Bitpanda has to offer.” Ireland will play a central role in Bitpanda's expansion goals as it aims to become the number one investment platform in Europe. Bitpanda aims to simplify wealth creation for investors of all-aptness and levels of experience by building the infrastructure they need to take control over when and how they invest. The platform's intuitive design gives people an easy, fast and safe way to invest in a wide range of digital assets. Underpinning this is Bitpanda's absolute commitment to customer security and safety. Bitpanda's crypto assets are held in a highly-secure environment and customers' crypto funds are 100% backed. Additionally, the Bitpanda Group diligently follows European laws and regulations. Bitpanda operates business based on various VASP registrations, as well as MiFID II, E-Money and PSD II licences amongst all its core markets. The future of fintech is partnerships As Europe's largest and most regulated trading platform Bitpanda wants to help accelerate the transition to a tokenized world by removing significant barriers to investing, and partnering with existing financial institutions to modernise traditional financial products. By bringing its White Label API-infrastructure to Ireland, the platform will allow traditional banks and fintechs here to access 24/7 trading and provide their current and future customers with an easy, convenient and secure way to invest in digital assets as a significant value-added service. Leading European financial firms already using Bitpanda White Label include French neobank – Lydia, UK based smart money app – Plum, and the largest digital bank in continental Europe – N26, and Bitpanda sees a similarly large appetite amongst Irish banks. Simplifying wealth creation Approximately 12% of Ireland's population is actively investing in cryptocurrency, according to data by GWI. However, as macroeconomic events continue to impact people's finances, an openness to making investments coupled with exposure to money based apps has dramatically increased Irish customer interest in investing in digital assets. Bitpanda's Irish data shows that Bitcoin and Ethereum are the most popular assets being traded on the platform with both male and female users. Terra Classic (more popular male) and Cardano (more popular female) follow in third place. Elon Musk's Tesla and Twitter are the most heavily traded securities with Irish users showing us that Irish users have not been immune to the news cycles of the past...

GUEST: Silvia Fischer, VP Smart Mobility, FREE NOWABOUT THIS EPISODEMobility super apps are something we've talked about before on the podcast – these are apps which combine all forms of travel in a city to enable you to plan, reserve, and pay for your journey, regardless of the mode of transport and operator. We've seen the likes of Uber and Lyft add food delivery to their apps – and Uber is understood to be preparing the addition of long-distance travel bookings such as intercity trains, buses and planes. It already offers escooters, ebikes, and boats. And it has its sights set on becoming a one-stop shop for travel – a mobility super app.But it's not alone – and one of the largest such apps in Europe is FREE NOW. The company grew out of the Daimler/BMW mobility joint-venture of 2019 that pooled the two companies' mobility services, but FREE NOW traces its roots back to taxi hailing apps mytaxi and Hailo. FREE NOW is a fully integrated multi-mobility platform, providing access to eScooters, eBikes, eMopeds and car sharing, including partnerships with SIXT and Dott.FREE NOW has more than 54 million users in 16 markets and in over 170 cities - and it has 1,850 employees, including Silvia Fischer, FREE NOW's VP Smart Mobility.Connect with Silvia Fischer on LinkedIn

Big Data has a problem. It's not just its bigness; it's the rigidity of the databases that hold and that force us to make data copies. Resulting problems, from privacy to fidelity loss, are so severe, we should revisit the first principles of how databases are built. Let's be honest, if we could build our whole data infrastructure over again, would we do it differently?  Today's guest says we would have built data like a network. Thankfully, next-generation technology will allow us to store data in this new way while still making use of old-style databases.    My guest is Chris McLellan. That Great Business Show is made possible by our sponsor De Facto Shaving Oil, the world's best shaving oil.2.00" Jane Maher, Head of Marketing, FreeNow explains the name changes (plural!) from Hailo, to My Taxi to FreeNow and how the Mercedes/BMW (yes!) company has chosen to go into 'mobility solutions'. The app can be used by taxi owners across the island and it has recently been made available on scooter service Zipp Mobility, (a company headed by TeamGBS member Charlie Gleeson). For someone wanting to be their own boss Free Now is #Hiring and they're having roadshows (pun!) to promote the app, across the country. Non-football fan Jane's 'hire in a heartbeat' - Jurgen Klopp. You'll have to listen to find out why.27.00" Ciara Troy, founder Oishi Sushi, sixteen years in business. Ups, downs and most recently ups again as, after a year and a half of negotiations the company has finally been listed in Tesco AND Lidl Northern Ireland...and the response has been simply astonishing. Wait till your hear the central Dublin based company's sales figures for their first couple of months in NI, supplied from Smithfield, Dublin. But she only believed she had actually secured such fantastic contracts when she shipped her first pallet up the M1. Her eye is on the next prize...breaking into Britain. Go for it TeamGBS!Ciara's 'hire in a heartbeat' - Michael O'Leary, Ryanair boss51.00" Clare McSweeney, international athlete and founder of Kuul Play, aiming to get those kids who don't enjoy physical activity, to change their ways. Curiously the company has attracted serious international attention, particularly on funding, but at the moment they are too small for US (where childhood obesity is running at a whopping 60%) and UK funds who have said they want to invest, so at the moment they want what is called in the the investment business, 'wise money' - investors who can bring more than just their cash to the party. They want to raise €750k before the end of April.Clare's 'hire in a heartbeat' - uber athlete and now serious investor, Serena Williams. Now she would be 'wise money'!Please share this podcast. By thinking differently about three ways in which we approach data, we enable the future of the world

This podcast interview focuses on product innovation that has the power to move us to where we are at the centre of our own digital life, and back in control over our own data. My guest is Julian Ranger, Executive Chairman and Founder of Digi.me.Julian is an aeronautical engineer specialising in interoperability and the military internet. He founded STASYS Ltd in 1987, and grew it to a staff of 230, with subsidiaries in the USA, Germany, Malaysia and Australia prior to sale to Lockheed Martin in 2005. He's an angel investor in more than 20 start-up businesses, including firms such as Hailo, DataSift, and Astrobotic. His passion for the power of personal data led him to build new businesses. Today he's the Exec Chairman and founder of digi.me, a company that's on a mission to enable the Internet of Me, enabling us to do amazing things with our personal data without compromising our privacy or security. And that inspired me, and hence I invited you Julian to my podcast. We explore how the internet has become a place where no one is in control anymore over their own data, but no one is in control over all data. And exactly the latter is the problem that stops us from having the level of personalization we really want, and the big breakthroughs we all need, like precision medicine. Fixing privacy, security and consent is not the way forward. That's about stopping the bad stuff from happening. What we need is a way to share more and better data - to make the good stuff happening (without the bad stuff)Here are some of his quotes:Rich data, now ask yourself, is there a company in the world that can do that? And people say, 'well, Google, and Facebook and Axiom', but if you take a circle of my data, they have a wedge. But they don't have my health, my purchases, or my media, my wearables, and stuff. In fact, because of all the stovepipes or silos, whichever analogy you like, it is impossible for any company to bring all that data together to get a rich data library view. So we are effectively stopped from our future at this point. And the laws are shrinking those wedges that people have, but nobody said, Well, how do I open up the whole circle to do it? Now when you look at it, no company can. But there is one entity in the whole system that knows all about you and me. Yourself. You know where your data is. You have a right for that data. And you're the only entity with unlimited usage rights. When you understand those three things, you can only aggregate rich data at the individual. And that's the key insight for what my business does. That's our big idea. And it's no less than enables the future of the world. During this interview, you will learn four things:Why too often we approach the problem from the wrong end - by not looking far enough ahead: the simple desired outcome for the userWhat it requires to succeed when your big idea hits the road and you discover that the road is not quite as smooth as you'd likeThat everybody is lucky - but that many are just not seeing the luck around them. Why as entrepreneurs we often spend too much time on the idea and the instantiation of it, and not enough time on the internal and external messaging For more information about the guest from this week:Julian RangerWebsite Digi.me See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

AI-powered ADAS and AD systems are getting more complex with every iteration. New sensors, higher resolution cameras and increasingly sophisticated deep learning algorithms have substantial computational requirements. Traditionally, they have relied on compute resources in the cloud. But as systems get more advanced, relying on the cloud alone carries significant risk to systems that are supposed to work in real time under significant cost, space and power constraints. So how do we deal with this reality?Enter Edge AI. An elegant solution that helps process part of the input from various sensors locally, rather than in the cloud. In other words, ‘at the edge'. In this episode of the AI in Automotive podcast, we are joined by Orr Danon, CEO of Hailo Technologies, a company that is bringing powerful edge AI solutions to the automotive industry. Hailo's technology and processor have the capability to process several high-resolution video inputs in real time with low latency, without impacting the accuracy of the algorithm.Orr and I dig deeper into what exactly edge AI is, what advantages it delivers and what its relevance is to ADAS and AD systems. We also talk about the future of autonomous driving, and discuss how the levels of autonomy might evolve in the future. I hope you enjoy our chat today as much as I did recording it with Orr. Jay Bregman is CEO & co-founder of Thimble, insurance that helps businesses succeed on their own terms. Thimble's customizable policies are designed for the uncertainty of starting, running, and growing a business in today's economic landscape. To date, Thimble has sold more than $175B in coverage to businesses across America via its award-winning app, partner APIs, and industry-leading broker tools. Their unique policies have attracted the likes of Hiscox, Lloyd's, and Angi, who have partnered with the insurtech to provide innovative solutions to their customers. Thimble has raised $30M from investors including IAC, Open Ocean and top VCs. Prior to Thimble, Jay founded Hailo, a ridesharing company in London backed by investors including Sir Richard Branson that was acquired by Daimler. Earlier, he founded and sold eCourier, a technology-enabled services company to Royal Mail. Key points from the episode Thimble is simple business insurance created with small business in mind and the need for flexibility, especially in challenging times like we are facing today Jay's background was in the micro-employment and gig space, so he was watching how business consumers' needs were changing and insurance wasn't changing with them They started in drones, which was a space Jay was personally interested in and saw how the way people were using their drones for episodic income had no fit-for-purpose coverage In meeting the needs of drone pilots, those same people started asking for solutions for their other sources of income Aviation was easier to navigate the regulations on, but regulation became a major theme for Thimble as they spread to other lines by embracing the idea of working with regulators rather than fighting against them This may require lobbying to help move the thinking on some regulations that were created at a very different time and situation than the current environment or nature of work and exposure The economic shock of the pandemic has shifted how many companies work Larger businesses decided they needed more flexibility than their annual policy, leading Thimble to see some larger risks than they had been seeing before Smaller businesses with spikes in their revenue saw more spikiness, making the flexibility of Thimble's approach even more attractive There has been more growth in the starting of small businesses that is unprecedented Insureds are used to "consumerized" experiences, and are increasingly intollerant of where this is missing Shifts coming - there is a shift in appetite for some of the startup carriers that had "simple" offerings early on (like Thimble when it was just offering drone coverage) to be able to compete on much more complex and complete offerings going forward once their platform is proven Making changes in a legacy carrier is possible, but you have to be willing to fight against your existing solutions that the change may be breaking, giving Thimble not just a head start, but a moat that should persist beyond just when legacy carriers start offering episodic solutions This episode is brought to you by Medallia (Medallia.com), and the book series, "The Future of Insurance: From Disruption to Evolution" by Bryan Falchuk (future-of-insurance.com). BlaBlaCar is a lot more than a carpooling platform with a quirky name.Since its creators - Frédéric Mazzella, Francis Nappez and Nicolas Brusson - thrust the brand onto the scene in the late-2000s, many companies have sought to mimic the idea but have failed to unseat the clear market leader.Regulatory issues, launches in new markets around the world, modest levels of funding (compared to, say, Uber) and expansive of the brand into new product lines, such as bus and coach transport, are all part of the France-based BlaBlaCar story (including where the name comes from).Brusson, who became CEO in 2016 after initially taking the chief operating officer role in 2007, is the latest guest on How I Got Here.HIGH is a weekly show produced by PhocusWire and Mozio, aimed at getting the inside stories behind startups and innovation in travel and transportation. It's hosted by PhocusWire's editor in chief, Kevin May, and Mozio co-founder and CEO David Litwak.

And Adrian asks whether it's a good or bad thing that regulations prevent companies like Uber and Lyft from operating similar services to many other European and US cities. ‘Free Now' is the largest taxi company operating in Ireland with 12,000 drivers, 540,000 “regular” customers and 4.5m passengers carried in the first three months of this year. It is also part of a wider taxi transportation group across Europe, ultimately owned by the German automotive giant Daimler. And it is starting to introduce new services such as shared taxi trips between multiple passengers via its new MyTaxi Match app feature. In future, it hopes to add a fleet of electric scooters around Dublin.

Ride sharing works differently in Japan. Hailo lost the global market-share war to Uber and Lyft, but Hailo won the battle in Japan. Today, Ryo Umezawa details Hailo’s Japan market entry strategy and explains how they were able to succeed  where Uber has failed. While Uber vowed to disrupt transportation by taking on both government and industry, Hailo worked within the system. They designed and launched a platform that was completely legal and made life better for all major stakeholders, including the taxi companies. This was a battle between Uber’s disruptive innovation and Hailo’s sustaining innovation. On the global battlefield, Uber won. Uber is the world’s most valuable startup and is still growing fast, while Hailo had a cash crunch in 2016 and was acquired by Daimler. In Japan, however, Hailo won. Hailo’s sustaining innovation soundly trounced Uber’s disruptive innovation, and Hailo remains significantly larger than Uber in Japan. Of course, as you probably suspect, both companies had very different strategies in Japan than they did in the rest of the world, any Ryo explains it all in the interview. Welcome to Disrupting Japan, straight talk from the CEOs breaking into Japan. I'm Tim Romero and thanks for listening. Today we once again turn our attention to ride sharing, but surprisingly, we won’t be talking about Uber—at least not very much. No, today we get a chance to sit down and talk with my old friend Ryo Umezawa, who is responsible for Hailo’s market entry. Now, listeners not familiar with Hailo, let me explain. Hailo is, in a way, Uber’s quiet and somewhat neglected little brother. Hailo did not make the same impact as Uber worldwide, because they followed a very different strategy. While Uber vowed to disrupt transportation by taking on all-comers, both government and industry, Hailo had a different approach. Hailo wanted to work within the system. They wanted to design a platform that was completely legal and that would make life better for all stakeholders, including the governments and taxi cab companies. In fact, their model involved working with taxi companies directly. This was very much a batter between Uber’s disruptive innovation versus Hailo’s sustaining incremental innovation. And on the global battlefield, Uber won. Uber is the world’s most valuable startup and is still growing fast, while Hailo ran into a cash crunch in 2016 and was acquired—for quite a healthy sum, mind you—and it’s still an ongoing concern. In Japan, however, Hailo won. Hailo’s sustaining innovation soundly trounced Uber’s disruptive innovation and Hailo remains significantly larger than Uber in Japan. Of course, as you probably suspect, both companies had very different strategies in Japan than they did the rest of the world. But Ryo Umezawa tells that story much better than I can. So let’s hear from our sponsor and get right to the interview. [pro_ad_display_adzone id="1411" info_text="Sponsored by" font_color="grey" ] [Interview] Tim: I’m sitting here with Ryo, the former country manager of Hailo. You’ve since moved on from Hailo, but we’re going to back up a couple of years because I think your experience with Hailo is something that a lot of people who are coming into Japan now can learn a lot from. Thanks for sitting down with us. Ryo: Thanks for inviting me to speak. Tim: Hailo is very popular in Europe and it made a good run in Japan, but I think a lot of people in the U.S. aren’t familiar with it. So can you just give a brief overview of what it does? Ryo: Okay, sure. Hailo is a British company started up in 2012. It’s a smartphone hailing app. So we basically connect drivers and users who want to ride a taxi through the app and we also help drivers basically raise revenue by utilizing ...

Experiments in the life sciences, taxi technology and bike sharing are helping regular people do DIY scientific research and transform the way they get around.  This week on New Tech City, reporter Jessica Gould visits Genspace, a community biotech lab in Brooklyn where lay people can extract genes from strawberries, sequence DNA and play Bill Nye the Science Guy for a few hours.  "The benefits of having a garage biology or amateur biology movement grow are that you get people thinking outside the box," said Art Caplan, a bioethicist at New York University. Meanwhile, New Tech City producer Dan Tucker tests out a new model for bike share with no docks, no kiosks, just bikes. Unlike New York's Citibike program, tech startup Social Bicycles makes a self-locking bike with a bevy of tech-savvy features like GPS location and social media capability.  "What we've done is put the communications technology onto the bike," said Social Bicycles co-founder Ryan Rzepecki.  Also on this week's show, this is the first summer when New Yorkers can "e-hail" a taxi with a smartphone app like Uber or Hailo, and so far, it's caught on with only a very small slice of the population. During June, the first month the apps were allowed, less that one-quarter of one percent of taxi rides originated with an e-hail. When the data came out last week, New Tech City host Manoush Zomorodi tweeted: "Old habits die hard. New Yorkers still prefer to hail cabs by hand." When Stacy-Marie Ishmael, product manager at the social media startup Percolate, tweeted back "Brown people disagree," New Tech City called her up to hear her story.  "One of the advantages of these kinds of apps is they remove the uncertainty that you face that a cab driver will pass you by because they're profiling you based on how you look," Ishmael said. This is an extended podcast of New Tech City. You can listen to the broadcast version every Wednesday morning at 5:50 and 7:50 a.m. on WNYC 93.9 FM, AM 820 and New Jersey Public Radio or subscribe to the program on iTunes.
