One year ago, Elizabeth Price was awoken by a phone call with news that every mother dreads: Her son, Hisham Awartani, had been shot, along with his two best friends. It was Thanksgiving 2023, and the three 20-year old college students — all of them Palestinian or Palestinian-American — were taking a walk while visiting Awartani's grandmother in Burlington. The shocking, unprovoked attack against Awartani, Kinnan Abdalhamid and Tahseen Aliahmad made international news.A year later, the families are still dealing with the fallout. Hisham Awartani was the most seriously injured. A bullet lodged in his spine, paralyzing him from the chest down. Yet, he has shown remarkable determination and resilience, returning to attend Brown University earlier this year even while undergoing grueling rehab at a Boston hospital. He is now back on campus at Brown, where he is a junior majoring in archaeology and math.I spoke with Price on Monday, Nov. 25, the one-year anniversary of the attack. That morning, Price mentioned to her sister-in-law that it was “the anniversary of Hisham's shooting.” She replied, "'No, today is the anniversary of his being alive.' That really is what I have been thinking about."“Hisham is alive, and that is what we're going to be eternally grateful for ... (He) has demonstrated an incredible strength.”Awartani now uses a wheelchair and continues to work on his recovery. This fall, he began driving a car outfitted with hand controls. He has finished over 400 hours of rehabilitation. He has moved into a fully accessible dorm room with roommates. He has acquired two cats. And he has returned to Vermont several times to his grandmother's house, which is now wheelchair-accessible. A GoFundMe established to support his care has raised over $1.7 million from more than 22,000 donors, and it continues to receive donations. As Hisham Awartani has regained his life, some 45,000 of his fellow Palestinians have lost theirs in a relentless, year-long Israeli assault. Awartani is keenly aware of this dissonance. In May, he wrote an op-ed for the New York Times in which he observed that thousands of young Palestinians like him are shot in Gaza and the West Bank but are treated as statistics. Being shot in Vermont was different.“Instead of being maimed in Arab streets, we were shot in small-town America,” he wrote. “Instead of being seen as Palestinians, for once, we were seen as people.”Price echoed Awartani's concerns. She insisted that people consider her son's experience in the larger context of Israel's ongoing war against Palestinians. “There are still bombs being dropped in Gaza that are being paid for by U.S. tax money,” she said.“I don't know why the war is still going on. My son is so lucky in everything he has, and I don't understand why Hisham — or anyone else like him — has lost so much.”The man charged with shooting Awartani and his friends, Jason Eaton, has been held without bail since the attack. Eaton pleaded not guilty to three counts of attempted second-degree murder and has been deemed competent to stand trial. Earlier this month, Chittenden County State's Attorney Sarah George announced that she did not have sufficient evidence to add a hate crime charge. The trial will likely be in 2025.Elizabeth Price has been at her son's side since last Thanksgiving. I last interviewed her on The Vermont Conversation in February, when she was with Awartani in the hospital in Boston. As Awartani has regained independence and moved back into a dorm at Brown this fall, she was finally able to return to her home in Ramallah, in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, which is where I reached her on Monday.“When I look back on this last year, I am just immensely grateful and immensely proud of who (Awartani) is, and immensely moved by all the kindness and compassion and support that we've received. It was a terrible moment. But we've all come out of it healthy, happy and positive about the world.”Price beamed with pride about Awartani. “I think people will look to him as a thought leader,” she told The Vermont Conversation. “He's so passionate about so many things that he ... will show others that anything is possible.”“He's a thinker (who) will change the way people see the world and see what people like him can do.”
Suffering a major injury is traumatic, and adjusting to life afterward is a long process. Modifying homes to accommodate aids like wheelchairs can be challenging. Last fall, three young men of Palestinian descent were shot while out for a walk. All three survived, but Hisham Awartani suffered a spinal cord injury and is now paralyzed from the waist down. His mother, Elizabeth Price, shares the modifications made to their Burlington home so he can stay there during holiday breaks. We also hear from Edie Perkins, who was paralyzed from the chest down in a car accident seven years ago. She reflects on how her life has changed and how she's adapted.Vermont has legal protections for people with disabilities. Big Hartman, executive director of the Vermont Human Rights Commission, explains how their office handles discrimination complaints, often related to housing. Rachel Batterson, director of Vermont Legal Aid's Housing Discrimination Law Project, also outlines the rights of people with disabilities.Broadcast live on Wednesday, September 18, 2024, at noon; rebroadcast at 7 p.m.Have questions, comments, or tips? Edie Perkins, executive director of the Kelly Brush Foundation, became paralyzed from the chest down seven years ago following an accident. She worked with an architect to build an accessible home.Vermont does have a number of legal protections for people with disabilities. Hisham Awartani didn't expect to become the focus of international news when he went for a walk before dinner at his grandmother's house in Burlington on Nov. 25. Awartani was with his friends Kinnan Abdalhamid and Tahseen Aliahmad, who are all of Palestinian descent and attend colleges in the U.S. They were speaking a mix of English and Arabic and two were wearing kufiyahs, the traditional Palestinian scarf, as they often did.Without provocation, Jason Eaton, a man they did not know, allegedly stepped off his porch and shot the three 20-year old men at point blank range. Eaton was charged with three counts of second degree attempted murder, and the state is still deciding whether to add a hate crime charge. The trial will likely be in 2025.Awartani, a student at Brown University, was the most gravely wounded of the three friends, who were classmates at the Ramallah Friends School, a Quaker high school in the Israeli Occupied West Bank. A bullet lodged in Hisham's spine and he is now paralyzed below the abdomen. He has spent the last two months at a rehab hospital in Boston. He recently fulfilled his goal of returning to study at Brown, where he is an archaeology and mathematics double major.Elizabeth Price, the mother of Hisham Awartani, confessed that she “didn't think that would be possible” that her son would return to college for the second semester.“He's resolute and he's steadfast,” Price told The Vermont Conversation. An international development consultant, Price said that Hisham exemplifies the Palestinian philosophy of samud, “just getting on with it, just continuing to do what you can do, despite what the world throws at you.”A gofundme established to raise money to support Hisham's recovery has so far raised $1.7 million.Price said that her son's assailant is less important than his motivation. “He chose to shoot because of a larger cultural political mindset that is still endangering Palestinians in America.”“He was motivated by hateful, dehumanizing speech by elected representatives and media. And since he shot them, it's become much worse. The actions of the U.S. government, both the Biden administration and elected officials in Congress, have shown over and over again, that Palestinian life is not valued.”The toll of Israel's war on Gaza has been staggering. Some 30,000 Palestinians have been killed according to the Gaza Health Ministry. “I think Israel is committing genocide. It's committing a domicide, which is a total destruction of a city. It's committing culturicide — they have destroyed the intelligentsia and the professional classes. They have bombed all universities, they devastated schools, all the National Archives, archaeological sites, museums — it's all gone.“The extermination in Gaza is being done with American weapons with our taxpayers money.”Hisham returned to Brown as 17 students were participating in a hunger strike to pressure the university to divest from companies “associated with human rights abuses in Palestine.” Price said that such protests are “an incredible boost, an incredible gift to the Palestinians. Seeing the Jewish groups who are against the war occupying Grand Central Station, that was incredibly moving. And I think so many Palestinians were touched by that. …[It] means that Palestinians feel like they are not being forgotten.”Hisham "is going to be an amazing person in this world," said his mother. "I'm just really glad that he still is in this world because ultimately that's the gift that we never stop being thankful for, that he didn't die that night."

Alan Bleasdale's Boys From The Blackstuff is widely regarded as television drama at its best with a cultural footprint that led to the phrase “Gi's a job” being heard up and down the country. Forty years on from the first broadcast, James Graham, known for plays such as This House, about the UK's hung parliament of the 1970s, and Dear England about the England football team, has adapted Alan's screenplays for a stage production at the Royal Court theatre in Liverpool. He discusses why now was the right time to revisit and remodel. Chester Contemporary is a new visual arts biennial curated by artist Ryan Gander who was born and raised in Chester and has created a citywide event that features some of the visual art world's biggest names. Front Row visited Chester on the opening weekend to talk to Turner Prize-nominated artist Fiona Banner, emerging artist William Lang, Chester native Tim Foxon whose art pops up all over the city centre, and Turner Prize-winning artist Elizabeth Price, about their creations for the cathedral city. The renowned conductor John Eliot Gardiner has cancelled all his appearances for the rest of this year after allegedly slapping and punching a singer backstage after a performance. He is far from the only conductor linked to reportedly bad behaviour. But as society puts conductors on a cultural as well as physical podium, and addresses them as ‘maestro', perhaps such behaviour isn't surprising. Perhaps, too, marshalling a large orchestra requires dictatorial leadership. Igor Toronyi-Lalic, music critic of The Spectator, and the conductor Ben Gernon join Nick Ahad to discuss how conductors conduct themselves, and how they should. The year 1976 was shaping up to be as violent and bloody as the previous year in Lubbock, Texas, beginning with the mysterious death of Marcella Valenzuela in January. Her death led investigators and newspaper reporters to a frenzied and paranoid theory: that a, quote, “gay sex-drug cult” had infiltrated the city. But when Elizabeth Price was brutally murdered in April, at least some detectives had sense knocked back into them. The depraved murder of Elizabeth mirrored, in many ways, the 1975 slaying of Debbie Sue Williamson. There were investigators, too, who thought the 1971 deadly attack and torture of Naomi Martin might also be connected.Check out Unjust & Unsolved with Maggie Freleng wherever you listen to podcasts.Submit your DNA data from a consumer testing company to Othram's database. Hardly a day goes by when you see on the news another tragic stabbing in London. I hear a lot of community leaders and young people now talking about the lack of opportunity, aspiration, government spending, which then leads to them getting into the wrong crowd were joining gangs. I’ve got no opportunity Austerity is not for me I ain’t got no opportunity I grew up on a council estate in a rough part of London, well Camden was rough before it became gentrified, and we went through similar issues, but the gang violence was nothing like today and there was no drug dealing. But I had to make my way out of the so-called “ghetto” and get on with life, row my own boat as it were. The fact is, opportunity is everywhere in a wealthy western country like the UK. Education is free, unlike many parts of the world where kids drop out after high school. The reason I mention this is because I was really pleased to read about a young man that went out and look for opportunities and found it surprisingly quickly. Reggie Nelson came from a family that didn’t have much money and live in an area of South East London where expectations were low. Sounds a bit like my school where The aspirations of going very fa were limited. However, a few miles across London in Kensington was a place where he knew there were lots of wealthy and successful people. Rather than being envious of those people, he went out to find out what it was that made them successful. It was inspired by Joan Rivers show in America called “how do you how did you get rich” where the host asked rich people how they got that way. He decided to give it a try himself in London, so he Googled the richest area and hopped on the train and got out of Gloucester Road in the Kensington and. Chelsea area. Talking to Jeremy Vine on radio 2, Reggie immediately noticed but it was a different world and a completely different environment from his home. He Started approaching people in the street and just asking them how they became successful and he was rejected by a few but then he saw a man getting out of an Aston Martin and he asked him how we got to own such a nice car. The man was friendly and said that education was the key in and getting forward and gave him £40, even though he was not even asking for money, just advice! He then went to a road where there was a long row of houses and started knocking on doors. At first he received some negative responses and some people were frightened to open the door or telling to go away through the intercom. But the second door that was opened was a lady called Elizabeth Price who actually invited me in to have a chat. Then her husband, Quinten Price, came in and offered to mentor the young man. He he worked in asset management in the city. To cut a long story short he went there for an “experience day” and later work experience, which is not easy to obtain by the way, and a few years later has completed his Education and has nabbed a plum in the city as an analyst for my old company Legal and General. Some might look at him and say, he was lucky! L & G are a great company and one of the UK’s biggest insurers, fund managers and commercial property developers. Quick story after the late 1980’s crash. The great thing about this story is that here you have an 18 year old kid at the time who had the initiative and the balls to hop on the train to part of London which was a completely different world from where he lived and actually knock on doors and talk to people. I would love to interview him for my podcast because he can really inspire young people. Obviously Reggie still had to put in the work and get an economics degree at Kingston University in order to get a good job in the city - so it wasn’t handed to him on a silver platter – but the inspiration came from meeting people and a mentor could help him along the way. The story also illustrates importance of networking and getting to know people. Because it’s people who will help you along the way. We do business with people, we work with people we have to get along with people. Finally, the story illustrates that little wealthy people are as bad as the media betrayed them to be or as they are betrayed in the media. They often betrayed as fat cats to live in their ivory towers away from everybody else, but actually they are more often than not nice people who do a lot to help the community and the charities they support without making a song and dance about it. Flat Time house located at 210 Bellenden Road, Peckham, London is the former studio and home of John Latham (1921-2006) a pioneer of British conceptual art, who, through painting, sculpture, performances, assemblages, films, installation and extensive writings, fuelled controversy and continues to influence artists today. Latham transformed 210 Bellenden Road into a ‘living sculpture’ in 2003, naming it Flat Time House (FTHo) after his theory of Flat Time. A giant cantilevered book emerges through the glass facade of the building and onto the street. Inside, Latham designated specific rooms with anthropomorphic attributes of the living body, with the intention of communicating to visitors that Flat Time House exists as a living sculpture to be navigated as both a physical and metaphorical entity. Until his death in 2006, Latham opened his door to anyone interested in thinking and talking about art. In 2008, the Latham family opened Flat Time House to the public as a gallery, an artist’s residency and centre for alternative learning that is currently under the direction of Gareth Bell-Jones. Flat Time house operates as a discursive space to explore John Latham’s practice, his theoretical ideas and their continued relevance today. Gareth Bell-Jones (b. 1982) is the curator/director of Flat Time House. After graduating from the MA in Curating Contemporary Art at the RCA in 2010 he worked as curator for Wysing Arts Centre, Cambridge, for four and a half years. There he curated residencies, exhibitions, retreats, events, publications and an annual music festival with artists such as Ed Atkins, Michael Dean, Gustav Metzger, Elizabeth Price, Keren Cytter and Cally Spooner. From 2010-14 he was a regular visiting tutor to the RCA, Curating Contemporary Art Department. Previously he was curator of Tricycle Gallery, London from 2007-09. He has recently written catalogue texts for artists including Laure Prouvost, Marlie Mul, Barbara Visser and Agata Madejska. Lisson...ON AIR is written and presented by Hana Noorali

IN THE NEWS On Day Two of the Rio Olympic Event Finals: Beam, Rings and Men's Vault hosts Spencer, Uncle Tim and Jessica chat about: We hit ONE MILLION DOWNLOADS YESTERDAY!!! THANK YOU! Full recap of each event final details, scores, and moments we loved from: Balance Beam Final: Sanne Wevers, the 24 year-old DJ Spindarella'd her way the title, Olympic Champion. Smart gymnastics and past teams who stood united against an abusive head coach, created a beautiful system where smart, elegant gymnastics has flourish. Laurie Hernandez had a higher E score with only a little misstep on her dismount but couldn't match Sanne's innovation and big Dutch D. Simone Biles now eclipses Shannon Miller's record with yet another Olympic medal on beam. Grabbing the beam to prevent a fall is a .5 deduction. Catalina Ponor wore the greatest leotard of all time. Yes, you can wear a short sleeved leotard and have teammates as coaches on the floor for finals. Men'sVault Final: Was this the ugliest form we've ever seen in an Olympic final or just an example of the problems with the vault code? Ri Se Gwan, Denis Abliazin, Kenzo Shirai medaled , we explain the tie breaking procedure for vault. Marian Dragulescu lost the tie breaker but thankfully wasn't deducted for doing gymnastics, "practicing" on the podium. Igor Radivilov will have the handspring triple front named after him and we now hope that no one ever tries that vault again. Rings: Jessica and Spencer basically fell asleep because it's the most boring even in the history of gymnastics but Uncle Tim does a good job of trying to make us appreciate it. Our favorite and least favorite not-gymnastics moments: Sanne Wever's D score notebook Chris Books screams for Simone and Laurie. Everyone needs to calm down about the US women's team's non-gymnastics behavior. It's sexism. Al Trautwig (1:43:00) gave the worst PR interview that confirmed everything we already know about him; he's willfully ignorant, tries not to do his homework, and sees gymnastics as an "esoteric" sport too complicated for the average human. It was like listening to an old white man who hates anything non-baseball. His misogyny was evident when he compared two athletes with legitimate medal chances to each other. His factually correct statements about Gabby Douglas, "didn't look like a gold medalist" and "has fallen off the beam the last two times she's gone" to Sam Mikulak who he says, in stark contrast to Gabby, "every once in a while makes the odd mistake." Funny way to compare two potential medalists when Sam has fallen at almost every single competition he's entered into for years. The rage continues... Here is a little piece of her work: “To take the top 3 on every apparatus, a 7 person team would be needed. The selection committee has to optimize the team score within a 5 person team, while ensuring there are at least 4 solid or better scores on each apparatus. The only combination of these top 7 gymnasts plus Ashton Locklear that meets the criteria is the team the selection committee chose. 1. Biles 248.25 2. Hernandez 241.65 3. Raisman 240.85 4. Douglas 235.25 5. Kocain 233.5 6. Smith 232.55 7. Skinner 232.1. As it turns out, the Olympic team that was chosen is composed of the top 5 AAers over the two competitions with the next two AAers as alternates (which includes #2 on VT) and the #2 on UB as an alternate. They could stop there, but they need to ensure that the team of 5 gymnasts has the highest scoring potential." THIS WEEK'S INTERVIEW One of our original hosts, Dvora Meyers has just published The End of the Perfect 10: The Making and Breaking of Gymnastics' Top Score - from Nadia to Now.
