Who wouldn't want a fairy godmother to solve our problems with the flick of a magic wand? We know that's not a healthy fantasy and yet, fairy godmothers aren't going away. In fact, they've been proliferating in contemporary fantasy novels and reinterpretations of Cinderella. But they don't look or act like you might expect. I talk with Butler University lecturer Jeana Jorgensen and PhD student Abigail Fine about the origin of fairy godmothers and why they're ripe for reimagining. And I talk with author Gail Caron Levine about her groundbreaking novel Ella Enchanted, which broke the mold on fairy tales. Featuring readings from Aliza Pearl. Jeana Jorgensen's latest book is Fairy Tales 101: An Accessible Introduction to Fairy Tales. In this episode we discussed Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine, Cinderella is Dead by Kalynn Bayron and Kissing the Witch by Emma Donahue. We are traipsing through the land of Kyria this week on our unnecessarily teeny tiny feet as we revisit Gail Carson Levine's Newbery Honor book Ella Enchanted. Poor Ella of Frell has been cursed with the "gift" of obedience in this reimagining of the Cinderella story. We try to decipher the moral of the story, debate the rules and regulations of "small magic," and rue that Ella is really lacking in wokeness. Teresa laments the Shrekification of Ella Enchanted in the movie adaptation of the book, and we explore the not-like-other-girls trope, which leads to a startling not-like-other-girls declaration from Marisa. In this week's episode: Ash and I celebrate the 25th Anniversary of Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine. We answer a listener email and discuss the key elements of a great and long-lasting friendship before diving into the iconic novel. After discussion, stay tuned for some book recommendations to read if you enjoyed Ella Enchanted.  Book Synopsis: At birth, Ella is inadvertently cursed by an imprudent young fairy named Lucinda, who bestows on her the "gift" of obedience. Anything anyone tells her to do, Ella must obey. Another girl might have been cowed by this affliction, but not feisty Ella: "Instead of making me docile, Lucinda's curse made a rebel of me. Or perhaps I was that way naturally." When her beloved mother dies, leaving her in the care of a mostly absent and avaricious father, and later, a loathsome stepmother and two treacherous stepsisters, Ella's life and well-being seem to be in grave peril. But her intelligence and saucy nature keep her in good stead as she sets out on a quest for freedom and self-discovery as she tries to track down Lucinda to undo the curse, fending off ogres, befriending elves, and falling in love with a prince along the way. Yes, there is a pumpkin coach, a glass slipper, and a happily ever after, but this is the most remarkable, delightful, and profound version of Cinderella you'll ever read.  On this episode, we discuss the third prompt in the Books and Bites 2022 Reading Challenge, books recommended by young people. Young is a subjective term, so feel free to define it by whatever seems young to you! Reference Librarian Mycah Sylvain kindly fills in for Michael, who is busy welcoming a new young person into his family. Book Notes Carrie and her niece recommend Cat Kid Comic Club by Dav Pilkey. They also enjoy series that feature strong girls having adventures, including Ivy and Bean, Princess in Black, and Bink and Gollie. Mycah's younger self enjoyed Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine. Adam and members of the JCPL Teen Manga Club recommend Kamisama Kiss by Julietta Suzuki. Bite Notes Get into the spirit of Dav Pilkey's potty humor with some dog poo brownies. They're just regular brownies shaped to look like dog poo. Katharine Hepburn's brownies bake up nice and gooey for that perfect "disgustingly delicious" taste. Since noodles are the next best thing to unicorns, pair Ella Enchanted with a bowl of ramen from the cookbook Let's Make Ramen: A Comic Book Cookbook by Hugh Amano. Why not accompany Kamisama Kiss with some tasty mochi? Make some yourself with a recipe from Mochi Magic by Kaori Becker.

I wasn't really much of a reader until I was turned on to the Harry Potter series, but this was the first book I read before even those ones that made me interested in fantasy, and was ultimately what put me on the path of being a lifelong book lover (Gail Carson Levine also falls under this umbrella as another kickass fairytale fantasy writer)A Complicated Kindness, Miriam Toews. I think YA is grossly underrated and books like this prove that; I also think the idea that YA has to have a happy ending is ridiculous and this is a book that proves that because it's decidedly melancholic throughout all the way to the end (but honestly that is how teenagerdom felt for me, so I appreciate that)Nightwood, Djuna Barnes. From a stylistic perspective it's unlike any other book I've ever read (it's a story with no plot, really - contemporary of TS Eliot if that gives any context) and it fundamentally changed the way I think about love and sexualityThe Waves, Virginia Woolf. My favourite of Woolf's work, this is the first time I ever got to read an experience of depression that felt like my ownThe Good Earth, Pearl S. Buck. Yes, this is an Oprah Book Club book that was given to me by my mother as an "easy read" because I was feeling overwhelmed crushing out a shitload of classics readings in my undergrad, but this is a book that I re-read probably once a year. It just kind of makes you feel good despite the fact that it's about the cyclical folly of man, and I love that Difficult Women, Roxane Gay - I love short stories as much as I love novels, and this is one of the best collections I've ever read, period. Every single one of these stories completely captures the terror and power of what it means to be a womanGrief is the Thing with Feathers, Max Porter - I don't think I've ever cried so hard reading before (like had to stop because I couldn't see the page crying) but you feel really cathartically better after because if you've ever experienced any death in your life this is a heartbreakingly true articulation of how truly awful it is to lose someone you love SOCIALS:Here's where you can find us!Lexi's website and twitter and instagramBen's website and instagram and where to buy his book: Amazon.ca / Comixology / Ind!go / Renegade ArtsDork Matter's website(WIP) and twitter and instagramIf you're enjoying Dork Matters, we'd really appreciate a nice rating and review on Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your pods. Mary finally reads a book, but at what cost? This week's book is Fairest by Gail Carson Levine, aka the Snow White AU nobody asked for and another contender for worst book on the podcast. Not only does the story make no sense and filled with weak world-building that basically amounts to just giving things weird names, it's also filled with terrible messages about body image and self esteem. Truly it's a miracle if you made it out of this book without a whole new set of insecurities. Highlights of the book include centaurs that are basically just horses, random singing (from us and the characters), and everything having a weird-ass name for no reason. Honestly, just go watch Shrek 2 instead.    Episode Source Material: Fairest by Gail Carson Levine

We both had reading goals we mastered in 2020 and want to share with you some 2020 favorite reads from us, One Page at a Time hosts, Jill Berrett Given and Amanda Fristrom As we look forward to a new year in our podcast, we wanted to take a minute and look back at the last year. It was a big year in reading for both of us, so before we dive back into the awesome guests we get to chat with, we decided to share some of our favorites of all the books we read! In this episode we talk about: What our 2020 reading goals were and how they changed and developed as the year went on. Our top five books for the year! We each had our own criteria for picking our top books, so we ended up with a pretty diverse list! We will link to all the books we picked below. How the pandemic and other events in 2020 changed our (and so many other people we have talked to!) reading habits and limited the scope and type of books we read. And finally, we wrapped up the episode sharing our 2021 reading goals with each other (and all of you)! We talk about our reasons for reading fluffy fiction. Interested in learning more about just one of the benefits of reading fiction? Here's the Harvard Business Review article and the research study Amanda refers to about how fiction positively affects decision making. One of today's guests, Sarah Aroeste, is not only an author, she's also a singer songwriter who performs in Ladino, the Judeo-Spanish dialect that became the tongue of Spanish Jews after their expulsion from Spain in 1492. I'm excited to tell you that Sarah is sharing a full song with us today, the title song from her album Gracia. The word GRACIA means THANKS and GRACE but it's also a tribute to the medieval Sephardic heroine, Doña Gracia Nasi who lived in the 1500s and saved hundreds of Jews from the Inquisition. The main idea of the song is that activists of the past inspire us to activism in our own time. At birth, Ella is inadvertently cursed by an imprudent young fairy named Lucinda, who bestows on her the "gift" of obedience. Yes, there is a pumpkin coach, a glass slipper, and a happily ever after, but this is the most remarkable, delightful, and profound version of Cinderella you'll ever read. give it a'listen We're adding in an extra book each month to make sure you've got a weekly episode for your listening pleasure - and first up, fresh out of the hat is Ella Enchanted. Jessica and I have been online friends for years and it was a pleasure to finally have a conversation in person. I learned a lot and you will as well. Jessica Lawson enjoys living in Pennsylvania, where she and her family spend weekend hours hanging at the local orchard, pretending to be on Top Chef Junior, building with magnet blocks, making up new holidays, and reading plenty of books. She likes pizza. A lot. She is the author of The Actual and Truthful Adventures of Becky Thatcher, a book that Publishers Weekly called “a delightfully clever debut” in a starred review, and Nooks and Crannies, a Junior Library Guild Selection and recipient of three starred reviews. Her 3rd book, Waiting for Augusta, won the Colorado Book Award for Juvenile Fiction, and was also a Junior Library Guild Selection. Of her latest book, Under the Bottle Bridge, School Library Journal says: "Beautifully written, with vivid characters, this exploration of family and friendship shines from the first page." She fell in love with storytelling at an early age, and is a sucker for Roald Dahl, Maurice Sendak, Linda Sue Park, RL LaFevers, Charles Dickens, Karen Cushman, Barbara Park, Amy Tan, Maryrose Wood, Barbara Cooney, Anne Ursu, Christopher Paul Curtis, Gail Carson Levine, Rita Williams-Garcia, Arnold Lobel, Isabel Allende, Sharon Creech, Eva Ibbotson, Shannon Hale, Maeve Binchy and many, many, many other wonderful authors and illustrators. Are Madeleine and Grace the two princesses? Definitely not - but we are still honoring them with one of our most tangent-heavy episodes yet. Even though we're not perfect parallels between Addie and Meryl, we're thrilled to discuss our favorite Gail Caron Levine book, The Two Princesses of Bamarre. Find out why we prefer this book to Ella Enchanted, listen to us argue over whether Vollys is a great dragon or a terrible dragon, and learn even more about how spiders ruin lives. Whether you're a cowardly princess or a courageous princess (or even a bishonen sorcerer), there's something to appreciate.MUSIC - Pippin the Hunchback and Thatched Villagers by Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) - Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 License http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/

This week, we read and discuss Stephen King's classic wintery psychological thriller The Shining. Then inspired by the setting and isolation of The Shining, we talk about our favorite books about isolation. And as always we, close the show with recommendations. MJ finished reading and recommends The Female of The Species by Mindy McGinnis. He also recommends 'Becoming Ugly,' an essay by Madeleine Davies published in Jezebel. "There is a theme of women fighting back in what I read this week that I very much appreciated and I think is so important in this world we live in right now of speaking out, fighting back, and not accepting the violence done unto you." Aliza recommends Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine. "Someone posted a listicle online this week that I really loved and made me nostalgic about how the book Ella Enchanted taught them how to be a feminist. So I am going to recommend Ella Enchanted." Peter recommends Gilmore Girls. "I've taken a detour; I've driven and decided to stay in Stars Hallow...I'm pretty late to this party but it's wonderful."

After an all-too-endless holiday break, we're back, we're reading, and we're loving on Ella Enchanted. Don't write this well-rounded world off as a children's book - we gained so much from rereading it and Grace had several key epiphanies related to (you guessed it) personal perceptions of food. Do you love love? Then you'll enjoy listening to us attempt to articulate what makes Ella and Char's romance so appealing and feel Ella's pain as her curse isolates her from her loved ones. Struggling to break a curse laid upon you by an overeager fairy? It's time to get some tips from the master of finding tiny ways to overthrow an oppressive force. Ella is here to help! Equal parts disturbing and delightful, this book has been a part of our lives longer than most, and we're excited to share it with you.MUSIC: Pippin the Hunchback by Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) - Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 License http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/
