In this week's episode I talk to writer, Christina Campbell. Christina lives in Northern Virginia, USA, with her cats. She writes about invisible illness, singles' rights, and the inexorable onslaught of entropy. Her book, And Sarah His Wife, won the Michigan Writers' Cooperative Press Chapbook Contest in 2017. After earning her Master of Fine Arts in Creative Nonfiction from George Mason University, Christina co-founded the singles' advocacy blog, Onely, with her MFA classmate, Lisa Arnold. The site deconstructs cultural stereotypes about single hood, such as the myth that unmarried people die alone, eaten by their cats! Christina's writing on Onely has been featured, quoted, or referenced in numerous publications, including The Atlantic.com; The Sydney Morning Herald; Boston Magazine; PsychologyToday.com; the book Going Solo: The Extraordinary Rise and Surprising Appeal of Living Alone by Eric Klinenberg; the book Singlism: What It Is, Why It Matters, and How to Stop It by Bella DePaulo; and the book It's Not You: 27 (Wrong) Reasons You're Single, by Sara Eckel.Topics that Christina & I cover are: What motivated her and her college classmate, Lisa Arnold, to start their blog, Onely; Why Christina started writing about systemic singlism and discrimination against single people; How Christina has been affected personally by systemic singlism;Bereavement leave, how even that seems to favour those who are married, and how Christina wasn't entitled to take bereavement leave for two of her close relatives; How single people aren't able to choose recipients of certain benefits, whereas married people are automatically allowed to benefit their spouses; How single hood has meant that Christina has been hugely financially disadvantaged in respect of her health care; The project Christina worked on which found that single people, at a certain salary rate, finish their life at least $1,000,000 worse off than their married counterparts; How both Christina and I have been asked by 6 year old girls why we're not married, and why we live alone; and how important it is to show little girls that it's ok to be alone.Despite several relationships, Christina has always been very content on her own and never really felt the need to couple up;The stigma around childless women and how they are often perceived as ‘selfish'.Bella DePaulo's term ‘single at heart' and how Christina and I feel about it.How our ‘women's intuition' is our strongest tool against the patriarchal narratives;Last but not least, our beloved ‘fur baby' cats! In this week's episode of Spinsterhood Reimagined, I talk to journalist, author, editor, thought leader and podcaster, Ruby Warrington. Ruby latest book 'Women Without Kids' will be published in the spring but is available to pre-order now. She is the creator of the term ‘Sober Curious', and the author of the 2018 book and million download podcast of the same name. Her work on the subject has spearheaded a global movement to reevaluate our relationship to alcohol. Her other books include ‘Material Girl, Mystical World' and ‘The Sober Curious Reset'. With more than 20 years' experience as a lifestyle journalist and editor, Ruby is known as an astute culture commentator and thought leader. She's also the founder of self-publishing imprint, Numinous Books. In this episode, Ruby and I talk about the three motivators that drove her to write Women Without Kids; the nuances of not having children and her theory of the 'motherhood spectrum'; and how the desire to be a parent is something that can be ever-changing over the course of someone's life. We also talk about the importance of being supported when making the often complex decision of whether or not to have a baby; how women without kids are diminished in society; and how childfree women can often be seen as ‘selfish', especially when they prioritise and spend time on their personal growth. Ruby and I also talk about Orna Donath's studies on women who regret having kids, as well as our own feelings around being told we'll regret not becoming mothers; the healing that Ruby has done with her own mother as a result of writing her book; and how she feels now that the book is about to be birthed into the world! Finally, we talk about Ruby's love of astrology; how the term ‘woowoo' is being reclaimed; Ruby's meditation and yoga practices; and her platform, The Numinous. In this week's episode of Spinsterhood Reimagined, I talk to food writer, author and podcaster, Laura Price. Laura Price is a multilingual journalist and host of the podcast 'Life in Food with Laura Price'. After growing up in Yorkshire, Laura lived in Brazil, Mexico, Argentina and Ireland before finally settling in London with her fiancé, three stepdaughters, two cats and one step-dog. At twenty-nine, she was diagnosed with breast cancer, and at thirty-nine, she found out it had spread; she now lives with stage four, incurable cancer. Single Bald Female is her first novel, and was inspired by her experiences of dating after breast cancer. In this conversation, Laura and I discuss the very honest dating profile she used following her breast cancer diagnosis, including photos of her with a bald head following chemo; what it was like to go through cancer as a young, single woman following her 2012 diagnosis; and how having a secondary diagnosis impacts the way that she lives her life now. We also talk about Laura's experiences of solo travel all around the world, including Columbia and Australia; how breast cancer removed any chance of her having a baby, but how she has made peace with it; and how her novel, Single Bald Female, will be her legacy. Laura also tells me about how she was always very happy as a single person and has always loved spending time alone; how she has always the kind of girl who would rather be single than be in the wrong relationship; and how one of the problems with online dating is that there is too much choice, and yet ironically it's impossible to find someone! In this week's episode of Spinsterhood Reimagined, I talk to founder of the Savvy Auntie Community, author and entrepreneur, Melanie Notkin.Melanie is an entrepreneur, author, media contributor, speaker, marketer, and a leading voice of childless, often single, women and men. In 2008, she founded ‘Savvy Auntie: A Celebration Of Modern Aunthood,' a multiplatform lifestyle brand for cool aunts, great-aunts, godmothers and all women who love kids. Melanie is author of two books, ‘Savvy Auntie: The Ultimate Guide for Cool Aunts, Great-Aunts, Godmothers and All Women Who Love Kids'; and ‘Otherhood: Modern Women Finding A New Kind Of Happiness.' In this episode, Melanie and I talk about how she set up the Savvy Auntie community in 2008; her six nieces and nephews (including two sets of twin girls!); and how she coined the term PANK (Professional Aunt No Kids). We discuss Melanie's journey of not having children, and how she always had a vision of what she thought her life would be, which included a wedding in her back yard and twin girls; how in her mid-30s she went through an incredibly difficult time as she realised she may not have children of her own; how she wrote about her grief of not having children in her book, Otherhood, and how her desire for children felt like an ‘existential yearning.'Melanie also talks about being happy that she never had her eggs frozen; how feelings of desperation and anxiety around not having children can come to an end with the arrival of menopause; and how those women who aren't willing to settle for a ‘lesser love' - the ‘reinvented spinsters' - tend to be at a certain level of success in their lives. In this week's episode of Spinsterhood Reimagined, I talk to author and life coach, Leisse Wilcox.Leisse is a results-focused and strategic life coach based in Toronto, Canada. She helps people bring clarity in what they want, confidence in who they are, and courage to stay true to them both; essentially she helps people become the version of themselves that they've been dreaming about. Leisse is also the best-selling author of two books, the most recent of which is called ‘Alone: The Truth & Beauty Of Belonging' which we talk alot about in this conversation and which is essentially a reframe of what it means to be alone. It also looks at the importance of the relationship we have with ourselves, something which you'll know I feel passionately about and talk about alot on this podcast. In this conversation, Leisse and I talk about how we're all co-creators of our own lives, and how we always have agency over our lives; her thoughts on spirituality and how there's something beyond us that we can all tune into; how her divorce turned her life upside down and how she was forced to reinvent herself and her life; and how she was diagnosed with breast cancer when she was 36 years old.We also cover Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP), what it is and how it works; how our actions and behaviours are dictated by our thoughts, and how our thoughts are inextricably linked to our unconscious beliefs; the human experience and how none of us get through life unscathed, but we all get to choose how we respond and react to things; and why so many of us engage in co-dependency / people pleasing and why it's unhealthy.Leisse and I look at shame amongst single women and how it is such a difficult and heavy emotion; how centuries of gendered oppression have been passed down telling us what our lives should look like; the toxic narrative of society which still tells single women that they ‘haven't done it right'; and the difference between the fear of being single and the fear of being alone. Finally, we talk about Leisse's book, Alone: The Truth & Beauty Of Belonging, which is the ultimate reframe on what it means to be alone; we discuss what motivated her to write it in the first place; how being alone is not a bad thing in and of itself, but rather the meaning we attach to it; what it means to belong to yourself; and how when we learn how to belong to ourselves, we can never, ever be alone. In this Saturday's Minisode, I'm talking about a book called 'You Are A Badass: How To Stop Doubting Your Greatness & Start Living An Awesome Life' by the fabulous Jen Sincero. This book really is one of my favourites, and it's also one that I go back to time again when I'm in need of a bit of inspiration or a kick up the ar*e. Jen Sincero is a brilliant, bright, funny, cool, down-to-earth American woman who went from living in a converted garage at the age of 40, to living a life of her dreams. In this minisode, I talk a little about the book itself, and a little about my feelings around the things that the book touches on. I really hope you enjoy the episode, and that you immediately go and order your copy!UK Link to 'You Are A Badass': https://www.amazon.co.uk/You-Are-Badass-Doubting-Greatness/dp/1473649528/ref=tmm_pap_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=&sr=US Link to 'You Are A Badass': https://www.amazon.com/You-Are-Badass%C2%AE-Doubting-Greatness/dp/0762447699/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=you+are+a+badass&qid=1654520722&sprefix=you+are+a+%2Caps%2C168&sr=8-1COME & JOIN MY FACEBOOK GROUP: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1870817913309222/?ref=shareFollow me on Instagram: @spinsterhoodreimaginedFollow me on Twitter: @LucyMeggesonEmail me: lucymeggeson@gmail.com
In this week's episode of Spinsterhood Reimagined, I talk to the one-and-only Bella De Paulo. Bella is a Social Psychologist, author of, among other books, ‘Singled Out: How Singles Are Stereotyped, Stigmatised And Ignored, And Still Live Happily Ever After'. Her Tedx talk, ‘What No-one Ever Told You About People Who Are Single' has been viewed by over 1.5 million people. Bella is the recipient of numerous honours and awards, such as the James McKeen Cattell Award and the Research Scientist Development Award. She has more than 150 scholarly publications and has served in various leadership positions in professional organisations. She has written op-ed essays and other articles for publications such as the New York Times, the Washington Post, NBC, CNN, Time magazine, New York magazine, the Guardian, Forbes, Quartz, Nautilus, the Conversation, and the Chronicle of Higher Education. Bella has also discussed the place of singles in society on radio and television, including NPR and CNN. She has been described by Atlantic Magazine as “America's foremost thinker and writer on the single experience.”And as if all of that wasn't enough, she also happens to have a PhD from Harvard University. In this conversation, Bella and I talk about an array of topics including how she came to study and research the single life when initially she was working on the psychology of deception; the fact that she never wanted to be married, and how she realised many years ago that being single is simply who she is; and how she discovered that loving being single and wanting to stay single is, in fact, a ‘thing'.Bella also talks about how she believes that a single life can be a bigger, more expansive life with more possibility; being ‘single at heart', a term she coined and is also using as the title for her next book which she's currently working on; how crazy it is that she hears from many, many people who love being single but think that there is something wrong with them because of that; and some of the biggest misconceptions about single people. We also discuss some of the research that has been done into singles and how, in fact, the outlook for unmarried people is far brighter than society may assume; how Bella wants to challenge the idea that being single is always a ‘temporary' state whilst waiting for a partner; and how people who are single at heart happily live their best, most authentic, meaningful and fulfilling lives by being single.Bella is passionate about getting the message out that if you're happy being single, and want to stay that way, there is nothing wrong with you, and you don't need fixing! I sincerely hope that you all enjoy listening to this conversation as much as I enjoyed having it.Bella can be found on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/bella.depaulo She can also be found on Twitter: @belladepaulo Bella's Website: https://www.belladepaulo.com/US Link to Bella's book, Singled Out: https://www.amazon.com/Singled-Out-Singles-Stereotyped-Stigmatized/dp/0312340826/ref=tmm_pap_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=&sr=UK Link to Bella's book, Singled Out: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Singled-Out-Bella-Depaulo/dp/0312340826/ref=tmm_pap_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1653921137&sr=8-1Join my private Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1870817913309222/?ref=shareFollow me on Instagram: @spinsterhoodreimaginedFollow me on Twitter: @LucyMeggesonEmail me: lucymeggeson@gmail.com
In this week's episode of Spinsterhood Reimagined, I talk to the founder of Gateway Women, Jody Day. Gateway Women is an amazing global friendship, support and advocacy network for childless women which was founded in the UK in 2011 and is now headquartered in Ireland. Jody is also the author of what many professionals consider to be the ‘go-to' book on the topic of childlessness, ‘Living The Life Unexpected: How to Find Hope, Meaning and a Fulfilling Life Without Children'.In this honest and heartfelt conversation, Jody talks about: her difficult childhood and how her early experiences resulted in her initially not wanting to have children; her abortion when she was twenty; and her marriage in her early twenties which ultimately ended due to reasons including the strain of her infertility, as well as her ex-husband's problems with addiction. We also talk about how Jody's continued desperation to have a baby following the breakdown of her marriage found her in an abusive relationship; the period in her mid-forties when she hit rock bottom as the realisation that she would not have children became apparent; and the profound grief and despair she went through as she struggled to come to terms with the loss of the baby she never had, and the life she thought she would be living. The conversation includes Jody's thoughts on the concept of ‘disenfranchised grief' and the sometimes dismissive reactions of those around her; how her own grief manifested in her withdrawal from the world, and her total loss of joy in all the things she used to love, including reading; and how she felt like ‘social plankton' as a single, childless woman in her forties. Jody also touches on the point at which she realised there would be an end to her pain as she started to understand that grief was a process which she would eventually come through to the other side of; the concept of social infertility, a term coined by the World Health Organisation, and being 'childless by circumstance'; and how, actually, childless women are a potential threat to a patriarchal society. And finally, Jody shares how she has ultimately found peace with not having children, and how much she can now appreciate the freedom and possibility of being childless.I sincerely hope that you all enjoy listening to this conversation as much as I enjoyed having it.Jody can be found on Instagram: @gatewaywomen. In this week's episode of Spinsterhood Reimagined, I talk to Australian author, Donna Ward. In her first book, She I Dare Not Name: A Spinster's Meditations On Life, Donna explores, through a collection of essays, the meaning and purpose that she has found in her life as a woman who has lived almost entirely without a partner or children. Donna is the founder of literary journal, Indigo: The Journal of Western Australian Creative Writing, and her prose can be found in respected journals and anthologies internationally and online; she also has a past life as a psychotherapist and social worker. In our conversation, Donna touches on her upbringing on the banks of the Swan River in Perth, her time as a social worker and a psychotherapist, how she realised in her forties that she would not achieve her desire to have a family, and her thoughts around the period of time when her friends ‘disappeared' into family life. We also talk about the time Donna became aware of the the stigma associated with being single and childless; how she coined the term ‘familied' in her book, and how she felt that she was “falling out of society” due to her position in life; her experience of being alone during lockdown in Melbourne during which time she wasn't allowed to form a ‘bubble'; and how the community narrative during that time was primarily focussed on families. Our conversation includes Donna's experience of loneliness and how she refers to it as ‘the gritty beast'; and how, actually, facing the dark sides of life head on is what makes us the best version of ourselves. And finally, Donna shares her belief that the joys and ecstasies of life are the same whether you're married with children, or single and childless. I sincerely hope that you all enjoy listening to this episode as much as I enjoyed recording it.Donna can be found on Instagram: @donnawardwriter. She can also be found on Twitter: @donnawardwriter. In this week's episode of Spinsterhood Reimagined, I talk to award-winning author, journalist and podcast presenter, Emma John. I know that you guys are going to absolutely love this episode because Emma is completely brilliant, bright, funny and enchanting. Emma has had an amazing career as a journalist and has written widely across film, theatre, music, sport, travel and lifestyle for a variety of national newspapers and magazine titles, including the Guardian, the Observer, the Times and the Financial Times. She was the first woman in the UK to win a Sports Journalism Award and is a contributing writer to the US magazine Afar.Emma is also a successful author of three books on three very different topics: her most recent ‘Self Contained: Scenes From A Single Life', and her first two award-winning books, ‘Wayfaring Stranger: A Musical Journey In The American South' and ‘Following On: A Memoir Of Teenage Obsession & Terrible Cricket.'Our conversation includes Emma's thoughts around the word ‘spinster' and the shame surrounding it; how important it is that we don't think of single life as a lesser life, or a limbo period; and the fact that she is very close to her family, has very close friendships, and has never felt ‘alone'. Emma & I discuss how so many of us have bought into the idea that your partner should be your everything, when in fact that never used to be the case; familial expectations about ‘settling down' and their fears and worries around us being alone; and how not finding a partner has always been, and still is, seen as some kind of ‘failure'. We also talk about Emma's experiences of solo travel, her time living in North Carolina whilst learning to play Bluegrass fiddle, as well as the time she got to interview Dolly Parton!!!Emma also touches on the process of writing her latest book, Self-Contained, during lockdown whilst living with her parents when her Mum was very ill - she very sadly passed away less than a year ago. In this week's episode of Spinsterhood Reimagined, I talk to TV Writer & Author, Gina Fattore. Not only is Gina one of the loveliest people I've ever met, (albeit via Zoom!) she is also super smart, interesting, extremely well-read, and has forged an amazing career as a TV writer in the most competitive of all TV writer environments - Los Angeles. She has written for a multitude of shows including Dare Me, Californication, Masters Of Sex, Gilmore Girls, Parenthood, Better Things and Dawson's Creek. Gina is also the author of The Spinster Diaries, a ‘semi-autobiographical, unromantic comedy.' In this conversation, Gina and I discuss her TEDx Talk - Become What You Believe - so entitled because of a quote by Oprah Winfrey, how she never thought of the word ‘spinster' as having negative connotations, her love of all things literature including her ‘instant bond' with Jane Austen, and her upbringing in middle America by her Italian-American parents. Our conversation also includes her ‘best rejection ever' following an interview to write on Sex & The City, how she knew she wanted to be a writer from the tender age of 10, and how her book, The Spinster Diaries, was inspired by the eighteenth-century novelist and diarist Frances Burney who also happened to be the inspiration for Jane Austen. How can you deal with mixed lighting situations in a location and avoid different color casts in your images? What is lens diffraction, when does it occur, and should you even worry about it? And an alternative to Photomechanics for quickly sorting through your images. This episode is sponsored by: COSYSPEED - The fastest camera bags in the world. http://bit.ly/STREETOMATIC Skylum Luminar - The cutting edge photo editor http://bit.ly/PPN-Luminar3 Here are the questions that Marco answers in this episode: Hi Marco, I have been shooting my first events and weddings this year. I shoot in color and often with a flash. Most of the time the color and white balance on the subject is pretty spot on, but the background with artificial room light is sometimes completely off and looks distracting. How can I get more consistent results throughout the frame? For example, the Fujifilm wide-angle lenses go down to f/22. However, I've heard of a quality impairing effect called diffraction which sets in at small apertures. What is this? Should I use f/22 at all? If not, what is your recommendation for landscapes and what is the purpose of f/22 on a lens? Question from: Peter, near Koblenz, Germany Links for this question: Lens Diffraction & Photography explained by Cambridge Color: https://www.cambridgeincolour.com/tutorials/diffraction-photography.htm What is Lens Diffraction by Expert Photography: https://expertphotography.com/lens-diffraction/ Update regarding PPN Q&A #14 - Topic: Photomechanic Hi Marco. I very much enjoyed this episode, which was full of good, real-life advice on interesting topics. I have an additional suggestion for the question on workflow from Victor, in Dayton, Ohio. I do a lot of amateur wildlife and sports event photography, and even a full day’s street shooting can generate hundreds of images to review. I have tried Photo Mechanic on a month’s free offer, but I also tried the Faststone Image Viewer, which is free for amateur or educational use. Photo Mechanic does a range of extra things as you described in the show, but Faststone works in the same way by showing just the embedded jpeg extremely quickly and letting you move or copy the good images for later ingestion by your raw processor, and for my purposes this meant I could save the £170 cost of Photo Mechanic. One tip common to both programs: the embedded jpegs aren’t very large files, so although they are both great for a quick scan to weed out poorly composed and exposed shots, I find critical sharpness needs checking in the full raw file, so only use them to chuck out obviously unsharp images. I hope that’s useful, especially for non-professional listeners.
