Break 1: Kia MOG (07.14.22 KIA MOG) STORY 1: HOMELESS IN GWINNETT: Lack of clear data clouds scope of growing crisis in the county Robby Workman and Faith Zilka, both previously homeless, found companionship and resilience in each other amidst life’s hardships. Robby, a former coal miner, and Faith, a couch surfer, bonded over shared struggles, including addiction, mental health challenges, and homelessness. Despite setbacks like losing housing, failed business dreams, and even jail time, they’ve built a makeshift community with others in a camp near I-85 in Norcross. Their story highlights the complexities of homelessness, the importance of human connection, and the ongoing challenges faced by those without stable housing, as they strive for dignity, support, and a second chance at life. STORY 2: Gwinnett Police Searching For New Leads In Girl's Kidnapping Cold Case The Gwinnett County Police Department is seeking public help in a cold case involving 15-month-old Marisa Velasco, who was kidnapped by her biological mother, Rena Velasco, during a court-approved visit on Dec. 17, 2005. Marisa, in state custody due to safety concerns, disappeared after Rena left a shelter under the pretense of visiting a clinic. Rena’s boyfriend, Vidal Cruz, reportedly fled to Mexico. Now 20 years old, Marisa’s age-progressed photos have been released. Anyone with information is urged to contact Gwinnett Police or Crime Stoppers, with rewards available for tips leading to an arrest. STORY 3: Man Tased at Marjorie Taylor Greene Event ‘Trying to Leave,’ Attorney Says Attorneys for Johnny Keith Williams, a Marine veteran arrested at a town hall hosted by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, are urging Cobb District Attorney Sonya Allen to drop charges of battery, obstruction, and terroristic threats. Williams’ lawyers claim he was unlawfully arrested, tased twice, and assaulted by police while attempting to leave the event peacefully. They argue the force used was excessive and politically motivated, with witnesses supporting their claims. Williams, who denies any provocation, was released on bond after two days in jail. His attorneys expect the case to be dismissed or for a jury to acquit him. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info. The motive remains unknown, and police are urging anyone with information to contact detectives or Crime Stoppers, with rewards available for tips leading to an arrest. STORY 5: Gwinnett's interim superintendent wants to provide stability in uncertain times Gwinnett County Public Schools Interim Superintendent Al Taylor has stepped into leadership during a turbulent time, following the early dismissal of his predecessor and national debates over education policies. Taylor’s focus is on creating stability, prioritizing school safety, and maintaining equity despite federal scrutiny of DEI programs. While Gwinnett plans to comply with federal laws, Taylor remains confident the district’s initiatives align with regulations. He’s overseeing plans to install weapons detection systems in schools, emphasizing community engagement and staff training. Though Taylor hasn’t confirmed if he’ll seek the permanent role, his priority is ensuring a smooth transition for the next superintendent. Nicola Williams' new novel Until Proven Innocent sees the return of Lee Mitchell, a young barrister from a working-class Caribbean background, who is strong-armed into defending a supposedly corrupt racist police officer charged with the death of a 15-year-old pastor's son. Nicola served for many years as a criminal barrister, one of the few black women in that job, and draws on her experience of the criminal justice system in her writing. She joins Nuala to discuss juggling being a part-time Crown Court judge with writing, and how she draws on her legal experience in her books. Complaints about police officers' treatment of women are highly unlikely to result in action, according to new police data for England and Wales. The National Police Chiefs' Council says nine in 10 complaints were dropped in the six months to March 2022. We hear from Maggie Blyth, the National Police Chiefs' Council lead for violence against women and girls, and Nuala speaks to Sir Peter Fahy, former Chief Constable of Greater Manchester Police. The House of Commons recently approved the introduction of exclusion zones around abortion clinics, and now some experts are recommending that the mandatory authorisation of abortions by two doctors should be dropped. To find out more, Nuala McGovern is joined by Fiona de Londras, Professor of Legal Studies at the University of Birmingham, and Professor Kaye Wellings, co-author of a new London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine abortion study. Last year, an NHS Digital survey found that 31 per cent of 17 to 24-year-old women had depression and anxiety. What can be done to help them? A new Policy Centre for the Wellbeing of Young Women and Girls is being set up at a Cambridge University college. Dorothy Byrne is the president of all-female Murray Edwards College and the former head of news at Channel 4 Television. She joins Nuala to explain how and why she created this centre.

First up, an update on the NCAR Fire. About 150 firefighters have been working to contain the fire, which erupted Saturday in the foothills of Boulder County and prompted the evacuation of nearly 20,000 people. The fire hasn't led to injuries or damage to structures. All evacuation orders were lifted Sunday, although hiking trails in the area remain closed. Incident commander Brian Oliver said in a press briefing Tuesday that they expect it will smolder for weeks. The focus of today's episode: payouts and settlements for allegations of police misconduct. People in Northern Colorado have agreed to drop allegations that police mistreated them and settle for cash payouts. It's happened more than 200 times in the past decade, for allegations ranging from false arrest to wrongful death. And while some cases receive significant publicity, others slip under the radar. In the first of a two-part series, KUNC investigative reporter Michael de Yoanna uncovered hundreds of settlements -- and an ongoing pattern where allegations of police misconduct disappear in exchange for cash payouts.Colorado Edition is hosted and produced by Erin O'Toole (@ErinOtoole1). Web was edited by digital operations manager Ashley Jefcoat. The mission of Colorado Edition is to deepen understanding of life in Northern Colorado through authentic conversation and storytelling. It's available as a podcast on iTunes, Spotify, Google Play, Stitcher, or wherever you get your podcasts.Colorado Edition is made possible with support from our KUNC members. #WorcesterWednesday with Mayor Joe Petty - School Opening Update, Police, and Voting. Wednesday, August 26th, 2020.
The Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone in Seattle has aroused controversy over what some call a "takeover" by political activists in the city. But has media reporting on the situation been accurate, and does it represent autonomy, anarchy, or something else? What is "cancel culture", and is it entirely new, or just a new manifestation of something that has been with us long since before social media? We lead off by looking at that, as well as an "Election Update" which views the latest polls, and the ongoing search for Joe Biden's VP pick. Then getting to the heart of the conversation, the so-called Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone in Seattle has received widespread media attention in recent days, with some that include President Trump calling it a "takeover" by anarchistic factions, and others likening it to being a Woodstock-like "utopia." The truth, as usual, exists someplace in the middle, and we go in search of answers as we wade into this controversy this week on Middle Theory.
