Lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) are storage, voiding and post-micturition symptoms affecting the lower urinary tract. LUTS can significantly reduce men's quality of life and may point to serious problems in the urogenital tract. The pathogenesis of LUTS is multifactorial and can include one or several diagnoses, commonly benign prostatic obstruction, nocturnal polyuria (polynocturia) and detrusor muscle instability. LUTS are common and not necessarily a reason for suspecting prostate cancer. In this episode, Dr Roger Henderson gives an overview of male LUTS, including investigations, referral criteria and treatment options.Access episode show notes containing key references and take-home points at:https://gpnotebook.com/en-GB/podcasts/urology/ep-176-lower-urinary-tract-symptoms-in-men.Did you know? In the June episode of Chattering With International Cat Care, host Yaiza Gómez-Mejías continues two insightful conversations from earlier this year, revisiting complex topics in feline internal medicine and dermatology through the lens of recent clinical guidelines and case experience.First, Sam Taylor and Rachel Korman return to discuss further aspects of the 2025 iCatCare consensus guidelines on the diagnosis and management of feline lower urinary tract disease. Building on their previous conversation, they explore how clinical decisions are made in practice and reflect on how guideline recommendations translate into everyday patient care. To hear the first part of this discussion, listen back to our February 2025 episode. Then, Dr Kelly St. Denis is joined once again by Dr Frane Banovic to complete their discussion on immune-mediated skin diseases in cats, drawing on the second of two JFMS Clinical Spotlight articles. Together, they consider some of the key challenges in recognising and managing these conditions, and share insights into treatment options informed by both evidence and experience. Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are a common health issue that affect millions of people each year. These infections can spread through any part of the urinary tract, including the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra. Recurrent UTIs are especially troublesome and are more common in post-menopausal women. In this episode of Our Womanity, I am joined by my colleague Female Pelvic Medicine Division Chief at University Hospitals, Cleveland, and Associate Professor of Urology and Reproductive Biology at School of Medicine, Dr. David Sheyn. We answer two questions submitted by our listeners about UTIs:Question 1: “I have been having recurring UTIs for the last 4 years and get about 6-8 a year. I just had a vaginal swab that shows the same bacteria in my urine. Could the bacteria be causing the UTIs without causing severe vaginal symptoms? I get dryness and mild itching at times but no obvious discharge so how do you treat in these situations?”Question 2: “How do I treat Aerobic Vaginitis? My doctors brush over it and don't seem to know what to do. I get recurring UTIs and now I think they're connected. I tried Metrogel (metronidazole) but Google tells me that it will not fight the bacteria. I also tried Boric acid for 14 days.”Featured in this episode: UTI causes and symptoms Antibiotics, vaginal estrogen, and other UTI treatments Pelvic floor hypertonicity Condoms, spermicides, and genetics can cause infections Drug resistant bacteriaAre you 60 years of age or older? Joining Brian and myself in our studio (yes that is right we are back) we are delighted to speak to Lynda Rutherford, Senior Lecturer in Soft Tissue Surgery and Head of Soft Tissue Surgery here at the RVC. I thought we’d continue the theme of the last podcast on feline urethral obstruction and speak to a surgeon about this subject, really what you can do if you can’t place a urethral catheter (is there a stone that you can’t hydro-pulse, unlikely) but maybe there is a urethral tear (traumatic or iatrogenic). Lynda kindly spoke to us about BOAS previously and it is always good to catch up. Lynda gave a talk to the hospital about on this topic and thought it would be good to share with a wider audience, we hope that you enjoy. He realized that his 60+ hour work week as a surgeon was not aligned with his ideal lifestyle. This realization led him to take control of his future.Stepping Out of the Comfort Zone: Doctor Mike shared his experience of learning about real estate and how it was a slow process of overcoming the fear of not knowing what he was doing. Despite initial fears and past failures, he embraced the idea of being bad at something new and learning from it.Investing in the Future: Doctor Mike discussed his experience with real estate investments and how it has impacted his career as a doctor. He emphasized the importance of finding the right people to learn from and collaborate with. His investment journey has given him the freedom to scale back on his medical practice.Future Goals: Doctor Mike envisions a future where he can spend months each year traveling overseas and support his children's entrepreneurial endeavors. He sets a goal of achieving a $10 million net worth, which would provide financial security and the ability to withstand potential losses without affecting his lifestyle.I commend Doctor Mike for taking the right steps in his real estate journey, such as hiring a coach and being part of a mastermind group. Urine aka “pee” is one of the first body fluids as a child we learn about. We all learned about urinating when we younger and started using the toilet instead of diapers. The body produces urine as a way to get rid of waste and extra water that it doesn't need. Before the water leaves our bodies, urine travels through the urinary tract. Today's episode is about the urinary tract system.
Our kidneys are always busy. Besides filtering the blood and balancing fluids every second during the day, the kidneys constantly react to hormones that the brain sends to the kidneys. In today's episode we will discuss one of the other most important vital organs, our kidneys.
