In this week's episode of Ditch The Labcoat, host Dr. Mark Bonta sits down with gastroenterologist and podcast host Dr. Neil Parikh—known from The Gut Doctor Podcast—for a fascinating journey through one of the most complex and misunderstood systems in the human body: the gut.Together, they unpack the modern obsession with “gut health,” the hype around the microbiome, and why everyone from wellness influencers to scientists seems to think the key to longevity lies somewhere between our mouth and anus. But this conversation goes far deeper than digestion—it explores how what we eat, how we live, and even how we think shapes our gut and, in turn, our overall health.Dr. Parikh blends science with relatable insights from his life as both a physician and a dad, sharing how early childhood experiences, diet, sleep, stress, and even how we talk about “tummy troubles” influence lifelong health. The discussion spans from the everyday nuisances of bloating and irritable bowel syndrome to the more serious red flags of inflammatory bowel disease—and the grey area in between that frustrates so many patients (and doctors). You'll hear about why our guts become more sensitive with age, why sugary drinks can wreak havoc on our internal ecosystem, and how something as simple as portion control—or a good night's sleep—can dramatically improve digestive wellness. Along the way, Dr. Bonta and Dr. Parikh also challenge the commercialization of gut health, questioning whether expensive probiotic supplements or social media trends actually stand up to science. If you've ever wondered what your microbiome is really doing, whether yogurt is worth the hype, or why your stomach isn't as resilient as it used to be, this episode will give you the clarity you've been craving.Time to get real about gut health and digest the science while crapping out the myth.Listen to The Gut Doctor Podcast by Dr. Neil Parikh, MD https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-gut-doctor/id1605040922    Episode Timestamps 03:35 The Role of Gut Microbiome in Health09:16 The Importance of Gut Flora and Its Functions17:45 Dietary Choices and Their Impact on Gut Health21:08 Irritable Bowel Syndrome: A Spectrum of Symptoms30:23 Distinguishing Between IBS and Inflammatory Bowel Disease34:44 Current Understanding of Inflammatory Bowel Disease37:09 Practical Dietary Advice for Gut HealthEpisode Takeaways1. The show addresses a listener's question about nutrition and supplementation for breastfeeding mothers, offering specific advice on omega-3 fatty acids, calcium, vitamin K2, and dietary recommendations. A new study using gut flora analysis and AI to potentially detect autism in children at an early stage is discussed, highlighting the potential for earlier interventions. Recent research using epigenetic markers to identify prenatal exposures allows early diagnosis of subtle, hard to identify congenital defects and start early treatments The show explores other new uses of AI in medical research, particularly in the development of new antibiotics and antibodies for various diseases including cancer. The potential of AI in protein folding prediction and its application in designing more effective antibodies for diseases like Ebola and COVID-19 is explained. Development of new antibiotics and antifungals using AI and nonprofit partnerships is discussed as a way to address antibiotic resistance where no market incentives exist to drive industry investment. Health warnings are given about Valley Fever (coccidiosis) risks at outdoor music festivals in California and dangers of freshwater algae blooms during summer. The potential of repurposing older, off-patent drugs for cancer treatment is explored, using the example of pyrvinium for colon cancer. The rising costs of new cancer drugs and biological treatments are addressed, with suggestions for alternative development models. A concerning increase in congenital syphilis cases is noted, with a call for more widespread testing, especially in pregnant women.

Nature organizes into ecosystems where even the smallest organism plays a vital role. Transfer this mentality to some of your work colleagues and teammates and often we forget and how quickly we deny the lazy have loyalty. Nature teaches us so much more. Let's call it symbiotic motivation.    1. Mutualism In a mutualistic relationship, both species benefit from the interaction. This type of symbiosis is essential for many ecosystems because it enables different species to access resources or services that they might not be able to obtain on their own. Examples include: Pollinators and Flowers: Bees, birds, and other pollinators feed on the nectar of flowers, while the flowers benefit from the pollination process that helps them reproduce. Gut Flora and Humans: Humans provide a habitat and nutrition for certain bacteria in their gut, and in return, these bacteria help digest food, produce vitamins, and protect against harmful pathogens. 2. Commensalism In commensalistic relationships, one species benefits while the other is neither helped nor harmed. These relationships often involve one organism using another for transportation or housing. Examples include: Remoras and Sharks: Remoras attach to sharks and feed on the leftovers from the shark's meals. The shark is not affected by this arrangement. Epiphytic Plants and Trees: Epiphytic plants, such as certain orchids and ferns, grow on the branches or trunks of trees to access sunlight and air without harming the host tree. 3. Parasitism Parasitism is a relationship where one organism, the parasite, benefits at the expense of the other, the host. Parasites may cause disease or even death in the host organism, but they often evolve to coexist without killing the host. Examples include: Ticks on Mammals: Ticks feed on the blood of mammals, which can lead to irritation, allergic reactions, and the transmission of diseases like Lyme disease to the host. Tapeworms in Intestines: Tapeworms live in the intestines of larger animals, including humans, absorbing nutrients directly from the host's diet. Episode #32 In this Fasting Q&A episode, Megan and Nadia answer your fasting questions: 1. I know you have mentioned chia seeds (in water) as a way to gently break your fast, but can I use chia seeds as a training wheel during a fast because they give a feeling of fullness? [07:25] 2. I do 18:6 daily and a 48 each week. It took much effort to get my gut health stabilised. I have completed a couple of 5-day fasts in the past, but now I am worried about what a 5-day fast does to the good guys in my gut. With no fibre coming in, how do they survive? I don't want to compromise my good gut flora, but I'd like the benefits of autophagy and stem cell generation. [13:44] 3. I've been ADF'ing for 6 weeks. I typically fast 36hrs, only consuming plain water, salt, and 2-3 cups of black coffee. I am 46 and have had seven pregnancies. I have hardly lost any weight, only a couple pounds. What am I doing wrong? On my eating days, I eat 3 meals over 12hrs, lower carb but not keto, and add 2 Ts cream to my coffee those mornings. I mostly do not snack. I find it very hard to fast 42hrs. Would three 42-hr fasts be more effective than ADF with 36hr fasts? Does it take a while for results when peri-menopausal? [18:42]  4. As someone “recovering” from PTSD, I have been taught skills and tricks to reduce cortisol and adrenaline. From a recent podcast I learnt that fasting increases these and I am now concerned that it may create effects counter to what I am trying to achieve to reduce PTSD symptoms. Have you had patients with a similar concern? Is there perhaps a difference in duration, or other helpful hormones released at the same time, to differentiate it from the perpetually elevated stress hormones after PTSD? It was a real honor having Dr. Steven Hines on the show again today. I tell you what, if it weren't for guys like him, we would be out of a job. I know that it's a two way street and people like him that are in the trenches helping heal people every day also need to be on shows like ours in order to get the word out but man what a blessing it is that there are doctors like Steven out there doing the work that they do. I'm forever grateful for that. In today's episode we talked about many issues but the one that seemed to be creeping up the most was this idea of mold toxicity and how mold spores can be living in your body. We talked about where these mold spores could be coming from and what to do about it. It was quite fascinating to talk about mushrooms, mold, yeast, candida and how they can be contributing to our illnesses. We also discussed how to restore gut health so you have a strong and robust GI tract. Most people don't know that all disease begins in the colon. At least on a physical level. It's my contention that every disease has an emotional and spiritual component to them that is the real "cause". Health, spirituality and mindset are intricately connected at a very deep level. So it does no good drinking your green juice while at the same time being upset and angry with somebody. We must do work on all levels to restore mental clarity, physical health and improve our our vital essence which is our life. We have human cells and everything else, our bacterial cells. At 19:05 I had such a big surprise when I went to medical school, I learned that body and mind , you know are very separate. You have a physical problem, go see a doctor, you have a mental emotional problem, go see a psychologist, or if it has to be a doctor, a psychiatrist. So this was my biggest surprise when I learned mind body medicine like homeopathy, that they are actually connected. That is why I encourage everyone if you want to choose the medical field choose a form of natural medicine, because its really holistic and goes with the body mind experience.
