Season 3 is here!On this episode of Virtual Sentiments, host Kristen Collins interview Kris Rose on deliberative democracy and Meta's community forums. Kris discusses Meta's efforts to incorporate public input into decision-making through the Oversight Board and Community Forums. The Oversight Board, an independent body with binding authority over content moderation decisions, provides external accountability, while Community Forums proactively engage users on emerging technologies and policies. In particular, they focus on Meta's Generative AI Community Forum, held in the US, Germany, Spain, and Brazil, which aimed to gather diverse perspectives on the principles that should guide AI development and use. Kristen also raises several concerns including selection biases, lacking transparency, and the potential influence of political pressures on corporate decision-making.**This conversation was recorded in August 2024Kris Rose is a Governance Director at Meta, where he works across the company to drive thought on emerging trends at the intersection of technology, society, and governance. He also leads the team's community governance work, including community forums and other pilots focused on empowering user voice in the company's decision making. Prior to this role, Kris helped launch the company's Oversight Board, served as a geopolitical analyst at the Central Intelligence Agency for a decade—to include a secondment as the President's Daily Brief (PDB) briefer to then US Vice President Mike Pence—and most recently served as a Senior Advisor at the Cybersecurity & Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) during the Biden administration. Taliyah Huang is the creator of Bobaway, an online translator that converts English text into a Taiwanese audio clip. She is a sophomore studying biomedical engineering at Johns Hopkins University. After months away at college Taliyah felt her Taiwanese was out of practice so she created Bobaway to get better at Taiwanese and converse fluently with her grandparents. In June she posted a YouTube video about how she created it. A lot has happened since then. She's been interviewed by TaiwaneseAmerican.org and listed on the Taiwanese American Archives. Many generous donors have allowed her to continue running Bobaway and she's purchased a domain for it so now you can use Bobaway at Bobaway.org. US Vice President Mike Pence and Democratic challenger Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA) had their debate on Wednesday night. The focus of the event was the leadership of US President Donald Trump, or lack thereof, in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as the policy plans of Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden. How did it go for the combatants?Trump, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), Mnuchin and the others involved have picked the worst time for an impasse on economic stimulus negotiations. "Job growth is slowing, businesses are closing and cooler weather is driving people inside where the virus flourishes," the Washington Post reported Thursday. What are we to make of this?"Former CIA Director John Brennan briefed former President Obama on Hillary Clinton's 'plan' to tie the Trump campaign to Russia as a means of distracting the public from her private email server scandal before the 2016 election, according to newly declassified documents," National Review reported Tuesday. "Director of National Intelligence John Ratcliffe on Tuesday declassified Brennan's handwritten notes along with a CIA memo showing that officials referred the alleged scheme to the FBI for potential investigation." We discussed this story earlier in the week. What has the Democratic Party been hiding?"Director of National Intelligence John Ratcliffe on Wednesday said he had approved the release of almost 1,000 pages of materials to the Justice Department as part of an investigation of the FBI's probe of Russian election interference in 2016," the Washington Post reported Wednesday. What will be revealed?"Amid findings that the combined wealth of the planet's billionaires skyrocketed to $10.2 trillion during the coronavirus pandemic, the World Bank warned Wednesday that the public health crisis could cause global extreme poverty to rise for the first time in over two decades and push tens of millions of people into that category by next year," Common Dreams reported Wednesday. What are we to make of this? With the US just 26 days away from a national election in which each party being able to differentiate itself from its opposition is key, in the midst of a pandemic when the necessary aid can't be provided to people in need, Democrats are reportedly facing an intra-party battle over defense spending. What does all of this mean?"Last week, a bill was introduced in the House that could give the president sweeping powers to sanction areas deemed under the 'control' of Hezbollah in Lebanon and Latin America," Antiwar.com reported Wednesday. "The bill was introduced by Rep. Joe Wilson (R-SC) and currently has 12 Republican cosponsors." What are we to make of this?"US President Donald Trump, appearing at the White House for the first time since he returned from hospital on Monday night, vowed to 'make China pay' for damage caused by the coronavirus pandemic and called his infection 'a blessing from God,'" the South China Morning Post reported Wednesday. COVID-19 Hospitalizations Rise in Several States, While Millions of Americans Remain Uninsured

The Critical Hour

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 10, 2020 57:38

On this episode of The Critical Hour, Dr. Wilmer Leon is joined by Dr. Margaret Flowers, physician and co-editor of Popular Resistance. Back on April 23, US Vice President Mike Pence told us, “If you look at the trends today, I think by Memorial Day Weekend we will largely have this coronavirus epidemic behind us.” Well Mr. VP, I'm not too sure about that. "As the number of new coronavirus cases continues to increase worldwide, and more than a dozen states and Puerto Rico are recording their highest averages of new cases since the pandemic began, hospitalizations in at least nine states have been on the rise since Memorial Day," the Washington Post reported Tuesday. What does this tell us about where we are in terms of reopening, and where are we headed? It's happening again, right before our eyes. "Photos of would-be Georgia voters standing — and, in some cases, sitting — in long lines after 11 p.m. to cast their ballots in the state's primary on Tuesday encapsulated what rights groups and lawmakers decried as a disastrous day for democracy and an entirely predictable result of years of deliberate voter suppression efforts by Republican lawmakers and the US Supreme Court," Common Dreams reported Wednesday. Here we go again. What are we to make of this?According to a Tuesday piece in The Grayzone by Ajit Singh, "A leading Hong Kong 'pro-democracy' figure, Jimmy Lai, has denounced nationwide protests in the United States against police brutality and systemic racism, which were sparked by the police killing of African-American man, George Floyd. Lai's views reflect a significant segment of the city's protest movement, who affirm the exceptionalist myth of the US as a beacon of 'freedom and democracy.' Hong Kong's 'pro-democracy' activists have gone so far as to derail the efforts of an African-American woman who attempted to organize a Black Lives Matter demonstration in the city, accusing her of being an agent of the police and Communist Party of China." This is interesting to me, because on one hand we've seen tremendous international support for Floyd and the BLM movement, but there's always another side. What's going on here?In a recent MintPress News piece, Alan MacLeod opens with a story about an attack at a protest, writing: “A man in a black sedan car barrels towards a large Seattle demonstration protesting the killing of George Floyd. After he stops, he gets out and shoots a protestor at point blank range. The crowd scatters in terror. The man, still brandishing his weapon, casually walks through the mayhem towards the line of police, and is apprehended without incident. The police surround him, facing the crowd, shielding him from a non-existent threat, apparently totally unconcerned at turning their backs on an armed terrorist who just shot someone. Police did not take the hero who might have saved lives by accosting him to hospital: that was left to the fire department. After the incident, the police began shooting at the crowd who had just survived the terror attack.” These types of scenes are happening all over the country, and US media is not covering them to the degree that it should. So, Hillary Clinton has gone from talking about "superpredators" to supporting Black Lives Matter. How does that happen?GUESTS:Dr. Margaret Flowers - Physician and co-editor of Popular Resistance.Eugene Craig III - Republican strategist, former vice-chair of the Maryland Republican Party and grassroots activist.Netfa Freeman - Organizer in Pan-African Community Action (PACA) and on the Coordinating Committee of the Black Alliance for Peace. US Vice President Mike Pence announced Tuesday that the Trump administration's Coronavirus Task Force would be winding down, with operations expected to conclude by June 1. However, US President Donald Trump contradicted him Wednesday on Twitter after The Critical Hour's recording, saying that the task force would "continue on indefinitely." The administration has framed the pandemic in the context of war. Is it possible to declare victory when the enemy continues to attack and take ground, or would that just be waving the white flag of surrender? On Tuesday, we discussed that the New York Board of Elections canceled the state's Democratic presidential primary last week, citing the risk of spreading coronavirus. A Wednesday Common Dreams headline read, "Victory for 'Basic Democracy' as Judge Orders New York to Reinstate Sanders, Yang, and Others to 2020 Primary Ballot." The article noted, "The ruling by Judge Analisa Torres of the US District Court for the Southern District of New York, which came in response to a lawsuit filed by Andrew Yang last week, means the New York Democratic presidential primary will take place on June 23 as previously scheduled, barring a successful appeal." The saga continues."The Supreme Court on Wednesday heard arguments in the Trump administration's attempt to allow more employers to refuse to provide insurance coverage for birth control for female employees because of religious or moral objections," the Washington Post reported Wednesday. One thing you can say about these so-called right-to-lifers: they are persistent if nothing else. Yes, there's a definite so-called right-to-life issue here, but is there also male patriarchy involved here as well: men thinking they can still tell women what to do with their bodies and the age-old adage that women are supposed to stay home barefoot and pregnant?A great piece ran Wednesday in CounterPunch, entitled "The Washington Post's Neocons are Beating Cold War Drums…Again," wherein Melvin Goodman writes, "The Washington Post has a reputation as liberal and even left-of-center, although its editorial pages are dominated by neoconservatives who support the idea of American exceptionalism and the extreme operational tempo of America's military. In the past week, we have been treated to a series of op-ed essays that are supportive of expanded American military power and a political, if not military, confrontation with China."GUESTS: Dr. Richard Lachmann — American sociologist and specialist in comparative historical sociology and professor at the State University of New York at Albany. US Vice President Mike Pence attempted Monday to assuage concerns from Poland about the US' commitment to protecting it from Russia, just days after US President Donald Trump caused a stir among allies by advocating Russia's readmission to the G7. Speaking in Warsaw, Pence said allies should "remain vigilant" about Moscow's alleged election meddling and try to become independent from Russian energy supplies. Is this more fear mongering from the White House? While the Pentagon has called for talks with Iran, Tehran has made clear that no diplomacy will occur until Trump gives up his "maximum pressure" approach. What does this mean?Last weekend, Hong Kong saw one of its most violent nights in the three months of pro-democracy rallies in response to a proposed extradition bill. Police deployed tear gas and two vehicles armed with water cannons, and one officer fired his sidearm in the air after thousands of protesters took to the streets in the neighborhood of Tsuen Wan on August 25, clashing with law enforcement. As protests continued at the Venezuelan Embassy in Washington, DC, fire marshals attempted to enter the building and remove the activists occupying the space. Meanwhile, US Vice President Mike Pence claims volatility in Venezuela is threatening the peace and security of the Western Hemisphere. During a speech at the State Department Tuesday, Pence said the struggle within Venezuela is a battle between dictatorship and democracy. He argued that embattled Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro must go and said the US will continue to stand with the people of Venezuela. The US recognizes opposition leader Juan Guaido as the legitimate leader of the South American nation. The US has deployed the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln, its strike group and bombers to the Middle East ahead of schedule to send a "clear and unmistakable message" to Iran. National Security Adviser John Bolton said the administration was acting "in response to a number of troubling and escalatory indications and warnings." Where did this so-called intelligence come from, and what does this mean?According to Ramin Mazaheri, chief correspondent in Paris for Press TV, "The French government has been forced to shamefully admit that they made totally false accusations that May Day Yellow Vest anti-government protesters tried to break into the Pitié Salpêtrière Hospital in order to 'attack,' 'assault' and 'steal.' Countless mainstream media are just as covered in ignominy for having repeated these untrue claims. I was right there when it happened, covering it for PressTV, so I witnessed exactly what transpired. In fact, I even gave a live interview at the exact time of the incident, just after 4 p.m. I don't have a copy of that for now, but I hope to get one soon." So what happened and why? On Saturday, Venezuela's National Guard fired tear gas on residents at a bridge between Venezuela and Colombia, as the opposition party began its high-risk plan to deliver humanitarian aid to the region, despite objections from embattled President Nicolas Maduro. What does this mean for the escalating circumstances in the region? While speaking at the annual meeting of leaders of the Lima Group, a coalition of more than a dozen nations mostly from Latin America, US Vice President Mike Pence announced that effective Monday, the US would impose sanctions on regime officials, including three border-state governors implicated in last weekend's violence and a member of Maduro's inner circle. What's going on here?President Donald Trump announced Sunday that he would hold off on implementing planned tariff hikes on hundreds of goods imported from China, citing "substantial progress" in high-level trade talks between the two nations. The president also tweeted that he would hold a summit meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping at Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida to finalize an agreement, "assuming both sides make additional progress." "A very good weekend for the US & China!" Trump wrote at the conclusion of the two-part Twitter message. What does this really mean? The violence during Nigeria's delayed presidential and legislative polls has claimed at least 27 lives and injured several others, an NGO closely following the election said. On Sunday, the Election Network group said the outbreak of violence was "worrying," and the authorities had been warned about the risk, as another civil society group said the death toll could be as high as 35.   The eyes of the world are turning towards Papua New Guinea as it prepares to host the APEC Economic Leaders' Week, the biggest ever international event on its soil.  Starting on November 12, the week-long event is the culmination of PNG's 2018 chairmanship of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum.   As Port Moresby buzzes with activity ahead of the arrival of political heavyweights such as Chinese President Xi Jingping, Russian President Vladimir Putin and US Vice President Mike Pence, many international observers are asking what the event means for the Pacific nation host, and how can it capitalise on the international spotlight for long-term benefits.  With these questions in mind, Patrick Cooke, Oxford Business Group's Regional Editor for Asia, spoke with Tjeerd Ritmeester, OBG's Editorial Manager in PNG, to get a sense of how hosting preparations have changed the face of the capital, and whether the business community in PNG is ready to take advantage of the exposure and networking opportunities provided.  Another area of discussion is APEC 2018's theme of ‘Harnessing inclusive opportunities and embracing the digital future', and PNG's progress in digital transformation as it seeks to address severe development challenges. Taking into account the current international climate of protectionism, they also explore the implications of the US president's decision not to attend the summit, and the extent to which China is filling a regional leadership vacuum created by Trump's indifference.  Finally, our analysts look ahead to see how Papua New Guinea can ensure a meaningful and lasting legacy from its year-long chairmanship of this high-level, multilateral forum.  Read also: The Report: Papua New Guinea 2018

Now that Donald Trump showed his true colours as a Zionist (Khazarian mafia) sleeper agent, he is becoming increasingly isolated and is guilty of provable war crimes, Pentagon, CIA and other sources agree. â??Trump is toast,â?? was how a CIA source described the situation. Trump has been pushed by his Zionist handlers into trying to start World War 3 because these religious fanatics still think they are somehow going to start a war between â??Gogâ?? and â??Magog,â?? kill 90% of humanity and enslave the rest. To this end Trump ordered an attack on a Syrian airbase where Russian personnel were stationed. That is also why Trump tried to start a war with nuclear armed North Korea last week. The situation with North Korea was designed by the Zionists to provoke to ultra-macho antagonists, North Koreaâ??s Kim Jong Un and Donald Trump, into a situation where neither man could back down without losing face. The North Koreans said they had a right to test missiles etc. any time they want, especially on the 105th anniversary of the birth of their countryâ??s founding father Kim Il Sung. Trump said, â??if you do that we will attack.â?? So, a face saving solution was engineered with a missile that blew up immediately after launching. The North Koreans were able to claim they went ahead and did their test despite Trumpâ??s threats. The Zionists were able to hint they sabotaged the test with unspecified secret weapons. The important point being that Zionist attempts to start World War 3 failed yet again and will continue to fail. These provocations are just one sign there is something undeniably dysfunctional going on with the Trump presidency. A few weeks ago Trump was invoking President Andrew Jackson and hinting about nationalizing the Federal Reserve Board. Now he is saying FRB chief Janet Yellen can have another term in office. He also turned from provoking the Chinese and accusing them of being â??currency manipulatorsâ?? to brazenly sucking up to them and denying they manipulate their currency. These flip flops may be connected to the arrival of yet another bankruptcy deadline for the United States Corporate Government, in this case the expected Bankruptcy of the US Corporationâ??s Puerto Rico subsidiary on May 1st. Despite efforts to paint this as a municipal bond type problem, this could trigger a domino effect that finally takes down Zionist central in Washington D.C. https://www.yahoo.com/news/puerto-rico-seen-sliding-toward-bankruptcy-deadline-nears-070022952â??sector.html Sources close to the Japanese emperor say the arrival in Tokyo this week of P2 Freemason lodge and Vatican representive US Vice-President Mike Pence, as well as long term Rothschild agent and US Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross was for the purpose of
