In the late 18th century, tens of millions of buffalo lived in North America. By the mid-1880s, they were on the brink of extinction. For the white settlers who sought to “conquer” the American west, and the Native people whose way of life depended on them, the plight of the American Buffalo was more than a story of one species of animal. As Dayton Duncan writes in the prologue of his new book Blood Memory, the buffalo has “emerged as an embodiment of the nation's contradictory relationship with the natural world: venerated and mercilessly destroyed, a symbol of both a romanticized frontier and the callous conquest of a continent.” In this episode, Dayton joins us for a conversation about the Buffalo (aka American Bison) and how the story of one animal can tell us so much about American history. Dayton Duncan is an Emmy award-winning writer whose most recent collaborations with filmmaker Ken Burns are the book Blood Memory: The Tragic Decline and Improbable Resurrection of the American Buffalo (Alfred A. Knopf, 2023)and the new documentary The American Buffalo (2023) which is available right now at pbs.org. In just 6 months, Trump presides over the most scandal-scarred and corrupt Department of Justice in US History, which is all coming to a head in the way the DOJ is being willingly used by Trump to try to stop him from “being f'd” in the Epstein Pedophile Coverup scandal. Michael Popok catalogues all the corruption scandals in reverse chronological order starting with Alina Habba US Attorney appointment, DOJ leadership trying to clear Trump's name through Epstein's co-conspirator and Trump's considering using his pardon power to cover up the scandal; the use of a phony conspiracy investigation agains the Clintons and Obama; Emil Bove's corruption on full display in his judicial appointment confirmation hearing, and federal judges already not believing a word the the DOJ says in their courtrooms, and finding them in contempt. Watch the best scene reading: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XnOurfvF21E Sci-Fi/Political/Action – A popular President's re-election campaign is beset by a relentless, brutal Assassin with whom he shares a dark, shocking history. Get to know the writer: What is your screenplay about? The fundamental story of Justice and the Machine is about one of the most popular presidents in US History, William B. Justice, becoming the target of a brutal assassin during his run for re-election. Calling himself “the Machine”, the assassin unpredictably succeeds in killing the President's innermost cabinet. His loyal wife gets kidnapped by the Machine, and he soon reveals that he has a secret history with her husband that goes beyond anything she understood to be reality. Much to her disbelief, she comes to accept the truth that her husband, the President of the United States, is an alien from another planet with murderous intentions to conquer the planet. The Machine is, in fact, his sworn enemy, and whenever they meet, they are obligated to duel to the death. So, on its surface, there's a lot of fun action and sci-fi sort of genre bending elements, but at its core is a story of deception and betrayal and the discovery that completely changes one woman's world view. What genres does your screenplay fall under? I used to enjoy calling it: My Sci-Fi/Political/Action/Thriller – so, depending on which page you turn, it's one or more of those. Why should this screenplay be made into a movie? Are you freaking kidding me!? This is a franchise starter baby, come on! I've got the sequel and a follow up if they wanna go for three – I know how to meet a deadline, let's write up that deal! How would you describe this script in two words? Jon Grinspan has done something remarkable: in his new book, Wide Awake, he tells a thoroughly researched and brilliantly crafted story that may change your understanding of the origins of the American Civil War. In this episode, Jon joins us for a conversation about the Wide Awakes, the anti-slavery youth movement that played an instrumental role in electing Abraham Lincoln in 1860 and took part in some of the first acts of violence between pro and anti-slavery Americans in 1861. Jon also discusses the ways that the past and present interact in powerful ways, and how politics can evolve, step-by-step, into violence. To quote Jon's recent article in The Smithsonian: “The most consequential political organization in American history….began when a few working-class kids designed a costume, which grew into a movement and ultimately an army. And it ended with a civil war.” Dr. Jon Grinspan is a curator of political and military history at the National Museum of American History. His book Wide Awake: The Forgotten Force that Elected Lincoln and Spurred the Civil War was released on May 14, 2024 from Bloomsbury Press. Click here to order your copy! You can hear Jon's previous appearance on The Road to Now in episode #220 Processing the Past w/ John Grinspan. This is a rebroadcast of RTN #306, which originally aired on May 13, 2024. Data-center veteran Kervin Pillay walks us through the coming AI infrastructure boom. Pillay argues the U.S. is about to sink 10x the capital it took to create the Interstate Highway System into new data center capacity, racing toward “hundreds of gigawatts” of compute—each gigawatt-scale campus drawing more power than a major city. — For a deeper dive into these insights and more, be sure to listen to the full episode of the Onward podcast. FBI agent Robert Hanssen was one of the most damaging spies in US history. From 1979 to 2001, Hanssen delivered some of the United States governments' most sensitive secrets to Soviet and Russian agents, who used them to not only undermine US national security, but to identify and execute individuals who were working with the FBI. And despite an awareness of spies working within the FBI, Hanssen managed to operate for more than two decades before finally getting caught. In this episode we speak with CBS News' Major Garrett, whose new podcast Agent of Betrayal: The Double Life of Robert Hanssen, explores Hanssen's decision to spy on the US and how he managed to operate for so long without being caught. A thoroughly researched history with all the turns of a great true crime podcast, we think you'll enjoy Agent of Betrayal, available on Apple podcasts, Spotify, or anywhere else you get your podcasts. This episode originally aired as episode 287 on October 16, 2023. This rebroadcast was edited by Ben Sawyer.

Modern historians depend heavily upon sweeping narratives and their take on the US War of Secession is no exception. Yet, the use of methodological individualism allows one to avoid sweeping judgments like claiming the Confederacy was founded upon belief in white supremacy.Original article: https://mises.org/mises-wire/methodological-individualism-historical-analysis-0

In this special July 4th edition of The P.A.S. Report's America's Founding Series, Professor Nick Giordano breaks down the Declaration of Independence like never before, line by line, to reveal the enduring truths that gave birth to a nation. This episode explores the Committee of Five, the surprising influence of Italian patriot Filippo Mazzei, and how the Declaration laid the philosophical foundation for American liberty, natural rights, and self-government. Far more than a historical document, the Declaration is a moral proclamation that still defines the American Creed. A civic identity rooted in unalienable rights, the consent of the governed, and the duty to resist tyranny. Professor Giordano also highlights the founders' sacrifice and the extraordinary risk they took when they signed what amounted to their own death warrant. If you've ever wondered what it really means to be American, or why these words still matter, this is the episode you can't afford to miss. Episode Highlights: Why the Declaration of Independence was “forged with thought but won by blood,” and what it reveals about the American identity The real meaning behind “We hold these truths to be self-evident…” and how these truths remain our moral foundation How the final line of the Declaration, “our Lives, our Fortunes, and our sacred Honor,” marked a point of no return for the Founders

Hannah Arendt witnessed the rise of Nazism in Germany and her groundbreaking works, including The Origins of Totalitarianism, sought to understand how regular people could be seduced by horrendous ideologies such as antisemitism and fascism. In this episode, Ben speaks with documentarian Jeff Bieber, whose new film Hannah Arendt: Facing Tyranny, documents Adendt's life as an intellectual, refugee and, eventually, an American citizen whose concerns about power remain as relevant today as they were half a century ago. Hannah Arendt: Facing Tyranny premiered on PBS on June 27 and is available to watch on pbs.org by clicking here. For more on Jeff Bieber's work, check out his website: JeffBieberProductions.org.
