Since 2010, the nonprofit Free Law Project has been working to make the legal ecosystem more equitable and competitive using technology, data and advocacy. It may be best known for CourtListener, its flagship project that houses an immense collection of court orders and opinions, and for its RECAP suite, which is the largest free collection on the internet of court filings and dockets. But there is a lot more to the Free Law Project, as you will hear from our guest on today's episode, Michael Lissner, the Free Law Project's cofounder, executive director, and chief technology officer. Lissner started the Free Law Project while earning his master's degree at the University of California Berkeley School of Information, with the assistance of cofounder Brian Carver, who was then an assistant professor at the school and who is now copyright counsel at Google. Since then, the Free Law Project has expanded into a multifaceted source of legal data and tools, all with the goals of providing free access to legal materials and developing technology to enhance legal research and innovation. The Free Law Project's data also supports a range of academic research and investigative journalism, including having provided data that fueled the recent Pulitzer Prize awarded to news organization ProPublica for its reporting on the financial conflicts of Supreme Court justices. We are a nation of working, playing, and yes, even getting sick and injured at all hours of the day and night. That’s why it is so vital to have access to quality health care beyond the weekday, 9-to-5 paradigm that our system is set up for. In this episode, we explore a new study that points to the need for pharmacies and pharmacists to play a greater role in expanding access to health care. “Patients in low-income communities, especially seniors living in low-income communities, deserve better access to health care,” says Dr. Robert Popovian, Chief Science Policy Officer at Global Healthy Living Foundation. Among the highlights in this episode: 1:38: Listeners’ comment 2:12: A deep dive into a study Robert was part of 2:22: The bottom line: pharmacies can play a valuable role in expanding immunization access and other access to health care 3:01: How low-income patients have a disadvantage in accessing quality health care 3:43: Conner describes trips to the ER as a child during off-hours 3:57: Robert recalls having to take his daughters to the ER for earaches on weekends 4:46: How to improve access to health care 5:50: The fallacy that if you have health insurance, your health care automatically improves 7:42: “Pharmacists, physicians and nurses need to work collaboratively,” says Robert 8:38: We must maximize the health care professional’s skill sets 8:48: Surprise findings in Robert’s study 10:05: Policies need to be implemented to expand pharmacies or pharmacist’s ability to provide more health care services Read to the GHLF study, funded by the American Disease Prevention Coalition, discussed in this episode Contact our hosts: Dr. Robert Popovian, Chief Science Policy Officer at GHLF: rpopovian@ghlf.org Conner Mertens, Patient Advocate and Community Outreach Manager at GHLF: cmertens@ghlf.org We want to hear what you think. Elemy raised $219M in their Series B funding round, catapulting the startup to unicorn status with a total valuation of $1.15B. Elemy's investors include prominent names such as SoftBank, Chelsea Clinton, and Ashton Kutcher. We discussed: Inspired by the hustle of the informal economy of Queens, Yury co-founded two startups prior to Elemy. The common thread across all of his companies is solving a complex problem in an industry where consumers face many pain points. Elemy's focus on caring for high acuity pediatric populations through a hybrid model of care run on an integrated software platform that coordinates caregivers physically visiting patients at home. The importance of destigmatizing mental health to accelerate the expansion of pediatric behavioral health services to more patients in need.

GUEST: T' Fisher is director of operations for AlignCare Health, a program of the University of Tennessee that aims to expand access to veterinary care nationwide. She was founder and director of the Companion Animal Initiative of Tennessee at the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine, as well as vice president of animal welfare at the Houston SPCA. She has a bachelor's degree in cultural anthropology and bachelor of science degrees in computer technology (with a specialty in graphic design and 3D animation) and in animal science. MAIN QUESTION: What is AlignCare and how can it help organizations expand access to veterinary care even if they don't have their own clinic? TAKEAWAYS: AlignCare and other access-to-care programs help to keep animals who just need veterinary care with their families and out of shelters. This enables shelters to focus resources on animals who are homeless and really need the shelter. AlignCare benefits private practice veterinarians in the community, as they hate to see an animal euthanized for financial reasons. AlignCare is one way for helping with these situations. It covers 80% of veterinary costs for pets who are sick or injured whose people are on a means-tested public assistance program such as Medicaid, food stamps, or Section 8 housing. Animal organizations without public clinics can refer people to AlignCareHealth.org to apply for help at a participating clinic near them. (You can check with AlignCareHealth.org to see if the program is operating in your community, or you can help to get it going there.) AlignCare and other access-to-care programs typically works with veterinarians to provide incremental care that does not start with “gold standard” care that often involves lots of upfront costs, like diagnostic tests. Instead it relies on veterinarians' experience to determine the best, most cost effective initial courses of action for sick or injured pets, if additional help is needed, then tests can be ordered. It's a tiered diagnostic and therapeutic approach to veterinary medicine, similar to the way shelter veterinarians work. Good Morning, Colorado, you're listening to the Daily Sun-Up with the Colorado Sun. It's Wednesday June 23rd. Today - Rural Colorado communities have experienced limited access to broadband for years -- but the issue was front and center during the pandemic. Now, the state is using funds from the American Rescue Plan address it. But before we begin, let's go back in time with some Colorado history adapted from historian Derek R Everett's book “Colorado Day by Day”: Today, we take you back to June 23rd, 1947 when Governor W Lee Knous pressed a button to start pumping water through the Colorado - Big Thompson Project's tunnels. It's one of Colorado's largest, most complicated, and expensive water relocation efforsts. Now, our feature story. Coronavirus put the spotlight on an issue that has dogged rural Colorado communities for years -- access to broadband internet. People living on tribal lands are among the worst off. Now the state is using money from the American Rescue Plan to beef up funding for broadband projects with the hope of eventually getting the state's rural areas to 100 percent coverage. Colorado Sun reporters Tamara Chuang and Thy Vo talk about the state's latest moves to improve internet access. To read more of Tamara's reporting about broadband access, go to coloradosun.com. And Before we go, here are a few stories that you should know about today: Arvada police say Officer Gordon Beesley, who was killed in a shooting in Olde Town Arvada Monday, was targeted in an ambush-style attack because he was wearing his uniform. Police Chief Link Strate said the suspected shooter, whose name hasn't been released, expressed hatred toward law enforcement. The other person killed by the suspect, 40-year-old John Hurley of Golden, was described as a good Samaritan who tried to intervene. Preliminary congressional district maps will be released late Tuesday afternoon at a meeting of Colorado's Independent Congressional Redistricting Commission. It's the public's first look at where a new 8th Congressional district might be located, and comes ahead of a roadshow of public hearings hosted by the commission in July to get public input. The maps will be updated again once the U.S. Census Bureau releases the final census data in August. Two Colorado mobile home communities were sold to resident cooperatives on Monday. The high-dollar transactions for a park near Boulder and one near Durango are the first under a new state law that gives residents the first crack when a mobile home park is put on the market. A state database that tracks mobile home park listings reports more than 900 mobile home parks are either on the market or have changed hands in the last several months A new law signed by Gov. Jared Polis aims to make it easier for former prison inmates who worked on fire crews to get jobs in the industry after they've served their time. While the prisoners selected to work as firefighters are often model inmates, their criminal convictions can be a barrier to getting firefighting jobs when they are released. The law says that people with felony convictions are eligible to work as wildland firefighters in the state Division of Fire Prevention and Control, and that the division is encouraged to hire former prison inmates who have worked on fire crews. While Roe v. Wade may be the law of the land, abortion has always been inaccessible and a right on paper only for so many in the United States. Since the passage of Roe, there have been 1,200 abortion restrictions enacted, with 2021 on track to be one of the worst years for abortion restrictions. Jamille Fields-Allsbrook, Director of Women's Health and Rights at the Center for American Progress and Nora Ellmann, Research Associate for Women's Health and Rights at the Center for American Progress, sit down to talk with us about what actions need to be taken to ensure a proactive abortion agenda for the U.S. from their report, A Proactive Abortion Agenda: Federal and State Policies To Protect and Expand Access. First and foremost, the comprehensive right to abortion, without restriction and without political interference, must be codified at the legislative level. Championing laws like the Women's Health Protection Act would help block many of these restrictions, such as 20-week bans and targeted regulation of abortion provider (TRAP) laws. Financial support for abortion access is also critical; passage of the Equal Access to Abortion Coverage in Health Insurance (EACH) Act would permanently repeal the Hyde Amendment and prohibits political interference with decisions by private insurance companies to cover abortion. Individual states can repeal harmful legislation and pass proactively progressive legislation to expand access to medication abortion, decriminalize self-managed abortion, and remove restrictions on physicians. At the executive level, it's important that they select judicial nominees that are diverse and have backgrounds in civil rights, reproductive rights, and abortion rights. The President must also have a budget that doesn't allow for federal funding restrictions, like the Hyde Amendment, on abortion access. Finally, undue regulations on abortion-related insurance billing practices must be repealed. Already, the current administration has increased access to medication abortion during the COVID-19 pandemic. To learn more about this step taken by the Biden administration, listen to our podcast episode here. When it comes to the judiciary: we need to pay attention to the courts! Again, it's critical that judges appointed to all levels of the U.S. court system come from diverse backgrounds and have supportive records for reproductive health, rights, and justice. The courts must continue to uphold precedent and respect abortion as a right that has been established under the Constitution. Support the show (https://www.reprosfightback.com/take-action#donate)

Intro: Marie intro: This week on Minnesota Native News, a plan for indigenous students to get the education they deserve. I'm Marie Rock. The plan comes from Governor Tim Walz and Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan. Reporter Emma Needham (Red Lake Nation) has more. Emma: Due North is a broad education plan crafted by the Walz Administration that seeks to limit disparities between white students and students of color. Included in it are measures and funding to ensure all students receive an accurate history of Minnesota's Indigenous people, which is lacking in many current curriculums across the state. Even the name of our state, "Minnesota" is derived from the Dakota phrase Mni Sota Makoce, which means "lands where the waters reflect the clouds." Emma:Ramona KS is the new project director for We Are Still Here Minnesota. She says education around indigenous history should start right away in the school environment. Ramona: For kindergarteners….we color the flag of the nation. All right, there are 11 nations in our state, 11 tribal nations, it's very simple.. The concept of sovereignty isn't that hard. It's that we've never taught it. Emma: Minnesota has among the best K-12 academic outcomes in the nation. Minnesota also consistently exhibits some of the greatest educational disparities between white students and students of color across all areas of education, from reading scores to discipline rates. One explanation is that indigenous students don't see themselves in history books, so they feel marginalized. Minnesota Senator Mary Kunesh, recently retired as a library media specialist in K-12 education. She talks about an experience she had with one of her students: Mary: So There was a student, non native student, that wanted to do some studying around Abraham Lincoln. And after a weekend of studying, he came to me and he knew that I was of Native Descent. And he said to me, Mrs. Kunesh, did you know that Abraham Lincoln is the one that signed the proclamation to hang all those, those men in Mankato? And I didn't know that. It's because we haven't been depicted in our curriculum in an accurate way. And more and more people, native as well as non are calling for that kind of depiction, and authentic history. That's, that's going to show the value in the culture of our native communities, as well as the colonization and genocide that happened. Emma: As a legislator Senator Kunesh is working with organizations like “We Are Still Here”Ramona KS organization, to build on work that began more than 10 years ago. Ramona: In 2010, Minnesota was open to infusing the Ojibwe and Dakota culture into the curriculum... that said from now on, 2010, every time we review, the standard disciplines, say science, or literature, we must include the history of the Dakota and the Ojibwe in Minnesota. That was huge. What we learned was... There's no curriculum available. Emma: The new initiatives in the education plan make up $8.9 million in proposed new spending over the next two years. A main point in the plan to Expand Access to Opportunities for Students of Color and Indigenous Students is to establish an Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Center at the Minnesota Department of Education to address systemic racism. The plan also aims to provide educational experiences that value student culture and identity. Mary: I would love to see it go much longer than two years and, and make it an integral part of professional development, especially, you know, perhaps in licensure for teacher licensure as well. Conclusion: At this time, the individual bills related to the Due North Education Plan have not yet been drafted for legislation. For Minnesota Native News, I'm Emma Needham.

Guest: Rick DuCharme founded the Jacksonville, Florida nonprofit First Coast No More Homeless Pets in 2000. When he left in 2019, it was a $10 million-a-year organization with 125 paid team members, including more than 20 veterinarians at two large safety-net hospitals; First Coast No More Homeless pets also grew to operate other lifesaving programs, including a regional pet food bank, shelter-neuter-return efforts, and mega adoption events. Rick has now founded RLD Consulting Group, LLC to help organizations anywhere that are working to save more cats and dogs; it specializes in access to veterinary care, spay/neuter clinics, and nonprofit startups. Main question: Why is access to veterinary care so important in animal welfare and what can organizations do to increase it? Takeaways: * Economic euthanasia may be the biggest animal welfare problem in America today – with an estimated 3 million pets a year with treatable ailments being euthanized in veterinary clinics because their owners cannot afford care. Additionally, consider the number of animals surrendered to shelters for “owner requested euthanasia” or for medical reasons. For these reasons, increasing access to veterinary care is one of the most important things animal welfare groups and shelters can do to save the lives of pets in their communities. * You can start by offering low-cost spay/neuter, vaccinations, and/or wellness clinics. * If you plan to open a low-cost or affordable clinic, be sure to set yourself up for success by: ~ Giving your community the opportunity to invest in this solution by asking them to donate to support these services. ~ Planning to build out the facility to handle increased volume in the future – plan a facility that you will grow into ~ Utilizing incremental care strategies for providing affordable veterinary care ~ Developing ways to work with clients for payment as most people are willing to contribute toward their pets care even if they cannot afford the full cost. * It can be difficult to hire and retain veterinarians to work at nonprofit clinic. Rick’s advice: ~ Many vets wish to be part of the management team – include them. ~ In your marketing for veterinary positions mention that you value work life balance ~ Be flexible with vet scheduling. All eyes are on new appointments to President-elect Joe Biden’s Administration, with great speculation about which policies those appointees will change first. In particular, reproductive-rights supporters wonder what protection the Biden Administration can provide for abortion now that the Supreme Court has six votes to overturn or to further eviscerate the core holding of Roe v. Wade.

Jim Sandman may be one of the most impassioned advocates in the United States for ensuring access to justice for all. As president of the Legal Services Corporation since 2011, he oversees an organization that funds free civil legal services to more than 130 legal aid programs throughout the country. As a frequent speaker and advocate, he forcefully makes the case for equal access to justice. In this episode of LawNext, Sandman joins host Bob Ambrogi for a frank and thoughtful discussion about the justice gap in the U.S. and his ideas for how to bridge it, from increasing funding for legal aid to loosening restrictions on legal practice. They also discuss the role of technology and the 2013 report that Sandman spearheaded, Report of The Summit on the Use of Technology to Expand Access to Justice. Before joining the LSC, Sandman spent 30 years as a lawyer with the firm Arnold & Porter, including 10 years as the firm’s managing partner. Wanting to spend more time in public service, he became general counsel for the District of Columbia Public Schools, where he stayed until the opportunity arose to join the LSC. White notes that “a staggering number of people lack access to these things. Many die as a result. Communities and countries stay trapped in poverty. About 750 million people – one in nine-lack access to safe water. More than twice that many, 2.5 billion people, do not have access to a toilet.” “In just one day, women spend 200 million hours collecting water for their families. That is equivalent to the amount of time it would take to build 28 Empire State Buildings—in one day. Imagine the wealth these women will create when they can use these 200 million hours in productive employment, rather than foraging for water,” White adds. Water.org has observed that many people who live in urban slums live on top of water systems to which they don’t have access. White explains that they have developed a new strategy for giving the poor access to existing systems. White says, “We created WaterCredit to unleash the power of the poor. By enabling the poor to finance toilets and taps in their own homes, we’re spreading capital costs across a broader swath of stakeholders. Progress goes up at an exponential rate.” “This approach is working. It’s transforming lives. And it’s ready to really take off. WaterCredit has so far made it possible for over two million people in six countries to gain access to water or build toilets in their homes. Forty-eight microfinance institutions help us administer the loans. The loans are repaid at the rate of 99%. And over 90% of our borrowers are women. Since 2004, we’ve invested over $10.9 million in WaterCredit. This has in turn leveraged an additional $97 million in commercial and social capital. Traditional charity, by its nature, is unable to achieve this kind of impact,” White concludes. Please consider whether a friend or colleague might benefit from this piece and, if so, share it.
Many have said that the judiciary often trails the private sector in its use of technology. Courts have been attempting to close this gap but need the help of the technology sector to succeed. David Slayton and Jeff Aresty will discuss how the technology sector can get involved and what plans they have for hacking for justice in Texas. In May of 2012, David W. Slayton began serving in his current position as the Admin. Dir. for the TX Office of Court Administration. He has been employed by the judicial branch in various roles for over 15 years. He has published an article entitled “An Analysis of the Effective Use of Jurors in Lubbock County” and was instrumental in the publication of the 2007 version of the Nat. Assoc. for Court Management’s Model Code of Conduct. He currently serves as the Immediate Past President of the Nat. Assoc. for Court Management’s Board and was formerly the Secretary on the Board of Dir. for the TX Asso. for Drug Court Professionals. Jeffrey M. Aresty, Esq. is a Massachusetts lawyer based in Houston, TX and has been involved in international business law and the role of technology in the transformation of the practice of law for almost three decades. Mr. Aresty is the founder and current President of Internet Bar Organization. Among Mr. Aresty’s accomplishments are initiating and directing the “ Computer College” program (1983-1987). He co-edited two books on cross cultural influence in Int.business and e-commerce for the ABA, including “The ABA Guide to International Business Negotiations”.
