The all-new 2025 Genesis GV80 just might be the best-looking of the coupe-like SUV that has recently flooded the luxury market. Genesis's Trevor Lai, the brand's senior group manager of product planning, certainly thinks so, and he sat down for an in-depth interview with Host Jack Nerad at the vehicle's recent first-drive event in Minnesota. Essentially starting where the GV80 SUV leaves off in terms of powertrain, the GV80 Coupe offers buyers the choice of 375- and 409-horsepower versions of the vehicle, both twin-turbocharged and the latter fitted with an “e-supercharger.” So there is substance to accompany the good looks. Nerad had the chance to take a lengthy drive in the more powerful version of the GV80 Coupe in addition to speaking with Lai. Both proved illuminating as the Korean luxury brand continues to gain momentum by introducing one great-looking vehicle after another. In this week's road test segment, Jack Nerad and co-host Chris Teague get behind the wheels of two fun-to-drive hatchbacks. Teague spent a Maine summer week evaluating the 2024 Mazda CX-50 crossover, while Nerad got the opportunity to pilot the potent 2024 Volkswagen Golf R around his favorite Southern California test-drive loop. In the same week that Volkswagen announced a giant investment in electric-vehicle maker Rivian, the brand also reinforced its stance in conventional gasoline-powered vehicles with the unveiling of the newest Volkswagen Golf R and Golf R Variant. The fraternal twins redefine their class with 328 horsepower and the handling chops to leverage it. The new models are the most powerful Golf versions to date. They rocket 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) in 4.6 seconds (Golf R) and 4.8 seconds (Variant). With the Performance package, top speeds increase to a claimed 167 mph, making these the fastest Volkswagens alongside the Arteon R Shooting Brake that will never see the light of day in America. Both models feature a new front-end design, advanced light systems, 19-inch forged wheels, and an updated infotainment system. In Germany, they come standard with DCC adaptive damping to complement their impressive horsepower. The Golf R Black Edition, with darkened Volkswagen badges and a Performance package, adds more spice to the Golf R lineup. The Golf R Variant combines sports car performance with the practicality of a wagon. Since the debut of the legendary Golf R32 in 2002, the Golf R series has sold over 250,000 units. Driving the Spanish built Cupra Ateca today – this relatively new VolkswagenGroup brand has been selling well since its launch late last year. Cupra's threemodels, the Formentor and Ateca SUV's and small Leon hatchback, have a realsporty edge, the mid-sized Formentor SUV the big seller, I was impressed withthis mid-sized SUV a few months back, different with real flair. The Ateca SUV isslightly smaller, best described as a high-riding five-door hatch, the oldest of thethree Cupra models and in some areas inside a little dated but in performanceterms, sharing its DNA with the Volkswagen Golf R, and its most impressive. Onemodel the Ateca VZx, a 2.0-litre turbo four-cylinder driving all four wheels via aseven-speed dual clutch automatic. For the performance buffs it accelerates to100kms in just 4.9 secs. The 2023 Volkswagen Golf R offers a wealth of good stuff: 315 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, 6-speed manual or 7-speed DSG transmission, adaptive-damping suspension, a giant display screen, and impressive driver assistance technology. With a starting MSRP of $44,740, it is an amazing performance bargain. But at the same time, one of our testers asks the question, “Is it too smart for its own good?” While there is no doubt that the Golf R delivers more than enough performance per dollar spent, the interface between the car and its driver might blunt some of its goodness. Depending upon your point of view, the car's systems could require the driver to make too many choices. And those choices must be made through a touchscreen display that isn't all that easy to use, especially at speed. Guest co-host Matt DeLorenzo, author of How To Buy an Affordable Electric Car, and Host Jack Nerad will explore that in this episode. We'll also explore the all-new 2023 Kia Sportage compact utility. Driving Volkswagen's Golf R five-door hatch – this high performance all-wheel-drive one car I had trouble returning. An enthusiast car but an understated one, as I said earlier, a wolf in sheep's clothing. The performance from a 2.0-litre turbo with 235kW of power and 400 Nm of torque enough to put a smile on your face on a fast-winding road. Drive through Volkswagens 4Motion all-wheel drive system via a seven-speed dual clutch automatic with manual shift paddles is exhilarating to say the least. Sitting 20mm lower to other Golf siblings the Golf R is extremely capable – the all-wheel drive system with a new torque vectoring rear differential a revelation – electronically managing the enormous torque front to back, distributing more torque to the wheels with the best grip, more to the outside rear wheels to reduce the likelihood of understeer. The Golf R rides noticeably harder but the chassis's overall competence outstanding. On top of that you have three drive modes – Nurburgring, Drift and Race mode – Nurburgring retains more compliant damping despite heightening response and performance, maybe it's my age but I found it the easiest mode to live with. The Volkswagen Golf R all-wheel-drive at around $73,000 drive-away for the most part looks little different to the entry model Golf Life but look a little closer and you'll notice the larger 19-inch alloy wheels, reprofiled bumpers, larger lower air intakes,  front and rear sports spoilers, LED matrix headlights, and from the rear, four large exhausts. Under the bonnet an all singing all dancing 2.0-litre turbo engine with 235 kW of power and a healthy 400Nm of torque. Drive through Volkswagen's 4Motion all-wheel drive system via a seven-speed dual clutch automatic with shift paddles. Inside, less is more with a rather simple dash but with Volkswagen's excellent instrumentation which can be customised in a number of ways, a centre 10-inch touchscreen and Nappa leather sport bucket seats with stitching. The switchgear is unnecessarily minimal with some touchscreen applications frustrating with touch buttons on the steering wheel fiddly to use. Volkswagen is looking at the growing demand for electrification, and the shrinking demand for small cars in the United States, and decide to keep the Golf from hitting the U.S. shores. Even though America doesn't get the Golf, Volkswagen did bring over the eighth-generation VW Golf GTI and Golf R. The latest Golf R doesn't reset its established formula: it's still an all-wheel-drive hot hatch with plenty of power on tap. Powering this 2022 VW Golf R is a 2.0-liter turbocharged I4 that makes 315 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque. That power travels through either a six-speed manual transmission or a seven-speed automatic before hitting the all-wheel-drive system. El pasado 7 de abril se cerraron las calles del Centro Histórico de Puebla para grabar el nuevo comercial del Volkswagen Golf 2023, utilizando un R de octava generación, el cual es impulsado por un motor de cuatro cilindros de 2.0 litros turbo, que genera 320 caballos de fuerza y 309 libras-pie de torque, acoplado a una transmisión automática de doble embrague de 7 velocidades y tracción integral. Con un gran equipo de producción, cámaras y el Golf, grabaron por las avenidas más emblemáticas de la capital poblana al hot hatch. Algunos ciudadanos que pasaban por la zona tuvieron la oportunidad de observar el detrás de cámaras del comercial, sin embargo, en múltiples ocasiones se les pidió desalojar la zona mientras el crew levantaba imágenes con ayuda de cámaras ancladas a los autos, así como tomas aéreas con ayuda de drones.
