Sulmaan Wasif Khan is assistant professor of international history and Chinese foreign relations at the Fletcher School, Tufts University.
Along with Ukraine and Gaza, Taiwan represents the third leg of our increasingly wobbly international political system. This week, for example, the Chinese navy put on military drills off the Taiwanese coast designed, supposedly, to test its ability to “seize power”. So is the world on the brink of a third world war between China and the United States? Perhaps, according to the Tufts university scholar and author of The Struggle for Taiwan, Sulmaan Wasif Khan, who compares the current highly militarized situation in the East China Sea with the situation in Europe before World War One. In our KEEN ON conversation, Khan brings some historical perspective to the situation in Taiwan, even comparing the current geopolitical tensions of the island with the Cuban situation during the Sixties. Sulmaan Wasif Khan holds the Denison Chair in International History and Chinese Foreign Relations at the Fletcher School, Tufts University. He is the author of HAUNTED BY CHAOS: CHINA'S GRAND STRATEGY FROM MAO ZEDONG TO XI JINPING (Harvard University Press) and MUSLIM, TRADER, NOMAD, SPY: CHINA'S COLD WAR AND THE PEOPLE OF THE TIBETAN BORDERLANDS (University of North Carolina Press). He has written for Foreign Affairs, Foreign Policy, and The Economist. He has been a participant in NIC seminars and has spoken on China at INDOPACOM. His new book THE STRUGGLE FOR TAIWAN: A HISTORY OF THE UNITED STATES, CHINA, AND THE ISLAND CAUGHT BETWEEN is published by Basic Books (US) and Allen Lane (UK and Commonwealth). Named as one of the "100 most connected men" by GQ magazine, Andrew Keen is amongst the world's best known broadcasters and commentators. In addition to presenting KEEN ON, he is the host of the long-running How To Fix Democracy show. He is also the author of four prescient books about digital technology: CULT OF THE AMATEUR, DIGITAL VERTIGO, THE INTERNET IS NOT THE ANSWER and HOW TO FIX THE FUTURE. When President Joe Biden stated in 2022 that the United States would defend Taiwan military in the event of a Chinese invasion, he crossed a line of ambiguity that had been purposefully danced around for decades. And yet, even though such a scenario would pit two nuclear powers against each another, “The United States does not know why Taiwan is important to it,” argues Sulmaan Wasif Khan. He joins host Richard Aldous to discuss the history of the standoff and the dangers lurking ahead as relayed in his new book, The Struggle for Taiwan: A History of America, China, and the Island Caught Between (https://www.hachettebookgroup.com/titles/sulmaan-wasif-khan/the-struggle-for-taiwan/9781541605046/?lens=basic-books).

This Surah has 11 verses. It takes its name from verse 1: “وَالضُّحَىٰ” (By the morning brightness) where the word “الضحى” meaning “The Morning Brightness” appears. This Surah was revealed in Mecca most probably during the early days of Muhammad's proclamation of his prophethood, and most likely was among the first ten surahs to be revealed. This Surah addressed to Prophet Muhammad and assures him that his Lord had not forgotten him. As discussed in Surah Muddathir, history, ahadith and traditions tell us that the first revelation upon Muhammad was the first five verses of Surah Alaq but than there was a long interval and revelation stopped. This caused much pain and grief to the Prophet. So much so that he tried to reach at the top of the hill to throw himself down, but just when he tried to do so Angel Gabriel appeared and told him that he truly was a Prophet of God and the first experience of revelation was real and not his doubt or his mind's creation. Traditions tell that this was same sort of interval when for a period of time, the revelations stopped. The unbelievers mocked Prophet Muhammad saying that “Muhammad's Lord has abandoned him.” It is recorded in various traditions in Bukhari, Muslim and also by Ahmed bin Hanbal that there was a long interval and Angel Jibril was slow in coming to the Prophet of God PBUH. So the idolaters said, “Muhammad's Lord has abandoned him.” Thus Allah revealed, وَٱلضُّحَىٰ • وَٱلَّيۡلِ إِذَا سَجَىٰ • مَا وَدَّعَكَ رَبُّكَ وَمَا قَلَىٰ By the forenoon. By the night when it darkens. Your Lord has not taken leave of you, [O Muhammad], nor has He detested [you]. On the explanation of “وَلَلْآخِرَةُ خَيْرٌ لَكَ مِنَ الْأُولَىٰ” “And the Hereafter is better for you than the first” It applies on everything and every phase of time of Prophet Muhammad. History proved this verse was a miracle as every next moment for Prophet is this world was better than previous in terms of increase in his followers as well as spreading of message and dominance of Muslims over land and area. Then it also applies similarly to the worldly life of Prophet and hereafter. That's why Prophet was so keen of going from this world that when on his death The Angel of Death told him that Allah Subhan Taalah had given him choice of remaining in this life forever and then going to Paradise or moving on to the company of Allah, he chose that which is with Allah over this world Ahmad bin Hanbal, Tirmidhi, and Ibn Majah recorded a narration from Abdullah bin Masud who said, “The Prophet of God PBUH was lying down on a straw rug, and it left marks on his side. Then when he woke up, he began to rub his side. So I said, O Prophet of God PBUH, will you allow us to spread something soft over this straw rug. He replied, مَالِي وَلِلدُّنْيَا، إِنَّمَا مَثَلِي وَمَثَلُ الدُّنْيَا كَرَاكِبٍ ظَلَّ تَحْتَ شَجَرَةٍ ثُمَّ رَاحَ وَتَرَكَهَا I have nothing to do with this world. The parable of me and this world is like a rider who rests in the shade of a tree, then he passes on and leaves it. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/wow-be-podcast/message
Heart touching, Beautiful recitation of Surah Waqiah with Urdu translation. Urdu translation by: Mufti Taqi Usmani Voice Over by : Wasif Burney Jazak Allah Khair for watching this video. Surah Waqiah is the 56th Surah of the Quran. It has:- No. of verses: 96 No. of Rukus: 3 Other names: The Event, The Inevitable Position: Juzʼ 27 Classification: Meccan The afterlife (akhirah) is the main topic discussed in the chapter. Picking up from the preceding chapter, Ar-Rahman, which discusses the rewards of Paradise (jannah), this chapter also mentions them and then contrasts them with the punishment of hell. The chapter also distinguishes the three classes of people in the afterlife, "the foremost", "the companions of the right" and "the companions of the left": the first two groups will enter paradise while the companions of the left will go to hell. Here, "the right" is associated with goodness, the righteous will be seated to the right of God's throne and receive their records of deeds in their right hand. The "foremost" refers to a special group of people who will have an even better fate than the companions of the right in the afterlife. Quranic commentators differ on understanding who the foremost is. They variously identify the foremost with the prophets, the saints, the truthful, the martyrs, the first to accept Islam, and others. This beautiful recitation of the Quran with Urdu - Hindi translation is made so the viewer can understand what Allah says in the Quran. It will help Muslims to learn about Islam and to increase their daily practices in a way which Allah defined for us. Contribute today by sharing and subscribing to this channel for Sadaqah Jariyah. Abdul Rahman, fifth year medic at UCL, and Tariq Jamal, fourth year computer scientist at UCL, are creators of the app ‘Pillars'. November 2020 saw a huge controversy around a leading Muslim app that involved data being sold to third parties without permission from the users. Consequently, that became a light bulb moment for our guests today, who saw a clear niche to solve this problem. Tariq, who at the time was already working on app development, was encouraged by Abdul Rahman's design ideas to materialise the concept. With no financial investment, and a transparent development process via social media, the support for their app rocketed immediately.
This episode kicks off with some questions from ‘The Game' which gives a little insight into Abdul Lateef's background and journey into Islam, which stemmed from the influence of his best friend's brother at the tender age of 15, until he was ready to embrace Islam four years later. 24 hours after becoming Muslim, he broke the news to his mum. Her initial reaction wasn't very accepting. She worried he would become victim to the media's representation of Muslims. Reminding himself that this test was a test similar to those tests given to the Prophets (may peace be upon them). When they chose to follow the path to Jannah, they were afflicted with trials of rejection that came in the form of their friends and families. But Abdul Lateef took this trial in his stride and persevered. His mum was always suspicious of him, yet, he used this trial as an opportunity to gently talk to her about Islam and invite her to learn more. Not long after, Abdul Lateef explains how her visit to Turkey, and being surrounded by Muslims sparked more interest, and eventually the same friend's influence who inspired him to be a Muslim, inspired his mum. The conversation digresses into lighter discussions where Faisal and Abdul Lateef discuss their ability to switch off during their free time. They also talk about their experiences of the effect of positive influences around themselves, be it the people around them or social media. A powerful and inspiring episode all in all.
