On today's episode, I talk to musician John Davis. Growing up in Cambridge, MA, John formed The Folk Implosion with Sebadoh and Dinosaur Jr.'s Lou Barlow in the early 1990s. Their first album 1994's Take a Look Inside was a brilliant lo-fi pop record, and then a year later, a song of theirs on the Kids soundtrack blew up, and in the diverse atmosphere that had been created in Nirvana's wake, the band was noticed by a number of larger labels. Their third album would be released by Interscope, after which John left the band. As a solo artist, John has released many albums under different names on labels like Shrimper, and just last year, Lou and he got back together to make a new Folk Implosion album. Walk Thru Me was released on Joyful Noise last June, and it is quite wonderful! This is the website for Beginnings, subscribe on Apple Podcasts, follow me on Twitter. Everyone (Adelle, Tiny Tunes Tuesday Guy, Mini-Music-Monday Guy and 4-Track Man) is skeptical of Lou's claim that he has not played Natural One for the podcast. How could have -not- played his most known tune after 2 and 1/2 years of RAW Impressions? Adelle and Lou share their thoughts on regret. Spinning Out (another music podcast) We talk to artists about their favorite albums and go on wild tangents. This week on the pod we're joined by Lou Barlow. We talked about the 1980 Rough Trade compilation, "Wanna Buy a Bridge?" We honestly chat mostly about the comp and its influence on Barlow's taste early on and throughout his time in Dinosaur Jr, Sebadoh and Folk Implosion. And -- If you weren't aware Folk Implosion is back together and they just released their first new album since 1999, twenty five years ago. Well 20 years ago if you count The New Folk Implosion, without John Davis, his writing partner on the project. The new album, "Walk Thru Me," is out now on Joyful Noise Recordings. Pick that up direct from the band or wherever you stream music. https://thefolkimplosion.bandcamp.com/ Lou also does a podcast with his wife, Adelle Barlow, called Raw Impressions, so check that out too. https://open.spotify.com/show/5H0j91I0qabIiBqv9nX0yy?si=11dba4166ff44cd6 Subscribe to our Patreon here: www.patreon.com/spinningoutpod Follow us on social media -- twitter and instagram (@Spinningoutpod)

Over the past 40 years, Lou Barlow's body of work--with bands like Dinosaur Jr., Sebadoh, and as a solo artist--has immensely impacted Joe's life. Lou tells Joe about growing up in the chaotic 1970s; his early love of pop radio; the enormous influence the Ramones had on his life; hearing his early songs on college radio; sleep hygiene; and his inclination towards flittering and fretting.

We're very excited to begin yet another season of The Self Portrait Gospel Podcast and what better way to kick things off then with our special guest and music hero, the legendary Lou Barlow of Dinosaur Jr., Sebadoh, The Folk Implosion, just to name a few. Having met J Mascis back in highschool, the two set out to form their very own hardcore band, Deep Wound, after being inspired and influenced by the growing Punk/HC scene in their area. They would soon connect with Murph and the trio would establish Dinosaur in the mid 80s before renamaing the band to Dinosaur Jr. for the release one fo the most important records of all time, their 1987 classic, "You're Living All Over Me" on SST Records. Barlow soon parted ways with the band to start the incredibly prolific Sebadoh and for the past 3 decades he has created an amazing body of work that has influenced bands and artists all over the world. Whether he's playing in Dinosaur Jr, The Folk Implosions, Sebadoh, working on his own solo material, or the podcast he co-hosts with his wife called Raw Impressions, Barlow is simpy in it for the love of creating something beautiful, something valuable and its exatcly this that makes him one of the most diverse artists out there today. Enjoy!

This week, Busy and Caissie are visiting Boston, dressed in their finest interpretations of “J Lo Goes to Dunkin Donuts” and chatting with their friend, comedian and star of Bob's Burgers, Eugene Mirman, about what it's like to play what is basically a cartoon version of yourself if you were a child. The pivot he shares is heartbreaking but also imbued with so much love. Joining the stage is friend of the pod, Lou Barlow, from the bands Dinosaur Jr., Sebadoh and The Folk Implosion, to play one of Busy's all-time favorite songs, “Too Pure.” And, as if that weren't enough, Boston musician Will Dailey comes out to do a duet with Biz, but before he does, he plays a cover of a song in honor of orphans everywhere that's gonna make you cry like Caissie did. Indie Rock Legend, Lou Barlow, is our guest this week and it was truly an honor to interview him. He created the music for the 1995 cult classic Kids with John Davis aka the band Folk Implosion. We covered this soundtrack for our very first episode. The movie also features a previously released song from Lou's band Sebadoh, and a song from his Deluxx Folk Implosion. The soundtrack spawned the Top 40 Single, "Natural One". We chat about Kids and working with our favorite soundtrack supervisor, Randall Poster. We also discuss the various shows and movies that have licensed Lou's music. We also talk about Lou's acting debut in Lisa Cholodenko's 2002 film, Laurel Canyon (which was scored by Craig Wedren who I interviewed last year for the podcast). And last but not least, we talk about Lou's new podcast, Raw Impressions which he co-hosts with his wife, Adelle. It launched late last year. Lou Barlow is a singer, song-writer and founding member of Dinosaur Jr., Sebadoah and The Folk Implosion. Though known for his contribution to the "low fi" scene of the 80's and 90's, Lou has his roots in hardcore, punk and even the folk/country superstar Glen Campbell. After a 20+ year break, The Folk Implosion (Lou Barlow and John Davis) have released two new songs that without a doubt retain the pop/experimental beauty the duo achieved consistently in the past. Lou tells us what sparked the reunion. In this episode Lou also shares why he felt he should be worrying about his worrying, how a couple of self help books got him through a challenging time and even motivated him to make a handful of holiday specials. Joe and Lou talk hardcore, crossover metal and most importantly, Lou tells us why he's a 7seconds snob. Joe and Lou share a couple tour stories and we hear the new Folk Implosion tunes. https://thefolkimplosion.bandcamp.com/album/feel-it-if-you-feel-it-2http://www.loobiecore.com/Episode sponsored by Izotope. This week's Talkhouse Podcast features a bit of a lovefest between two titans of the indie-rock world, Lou Barlow and Ben Bridwell. It's a cliche, sure, but Lou Barlow probably doesn't need an introduction around here. A founding member of Dinosaur Jr., he played on that band's formative 1980s albums before not very amicably parting ways with frontman J Mascis. But Barlow found plenty of subsequent success in the 90s with Sebadoh, whose 1994 masterpiece Bakesale is referenced in this chat. Barlow also, weirdly, had kind of a mainstream hit with his side project Folk Implosion—and there's some very interesting, unexpected Folk Implosion news in this podcast that I won't spoil for you. Barlow eventually rejoined Dinosaur Jr. in 2005, and the band has found a fruitful third life, making vital new records. Speaking of vital records, the prolific Barlow has also found time to make new Sebadoh music and solo records. The latest Lou Barlow record came out just last year, and it's called Reason to Live, and there was also an excellent Dinosaur Jr. album from 2021 called Sweep it Into Space. As Ben Bridwell points out in this chat, Lou Barlow has been making music in public for damn near 40 years, while the group that Bridwell leads, Band of Horses, is approaching 20 years now. As you'll hear in this conversation, Bridwell moved from the South to various other cities, ending up in Seattle—and specifically at the legendary Crocodile Cafe—where he played in bands and listened to lots of music. He loved Sebadoh, as did pretty much everybody in the 90s, and it was one of the inspirations for Bridwell to launch Band of Horses, which subsequently found its own substantial fanbase—no surprise considering Bridwell's passionate voice and fantastic songs. Band of Horses hasn't put out a full length in more than five years—blame the pandemic for at least some of that delay—but is just now releasing a great new record that feels a bit more like their early stuff, and they're about to head out on a huge tour supporting the Black Keys. The new album is called Things are Great. It's clear from the very start of this conversation what a huge fan of each other these two guys are—and also that neither of them are very good at accepting compliments. Barlow talks about the magical moment he connected with Bridwell's voice, Bridwell talks about discovering the power of that voice, they talk about how a Camel cigarettes tour brought them together, and eventually, Bridwell makes up his own segment for the Talkhouse Podcast called “rapid fire.” It's a delight. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Lou Barlow and Ben Bridwell for chatting. If you like what you heard, please follow Talkhouse on your favorite podcasting platform and social media service. Oh, and rate us, too—it really does help! Because I don't half love you lot, here's a bonus episode of this here podcast – an interview with Lou Barlow, of Dinosaur Jr, Sebadoh, Folk Implosion, one of my absolute favourite musicians of all time – that I did sometime in 2021. I actually spoke to him for a segment of episode 3 of The Spoook Podcast, which is another podcast I did/do/dunno yet, watch this space, but I just thought it made sense to republish it here. It's a good conversation once I penetrated the awkward veneer of a man whose written so many of my favourite songs. Speaking of which, if you haven't already, do check out Lou's most recent solo record, Reason to Live on Joyful Noise Recordings. It's got some of his very best songs to date on there. The James McMahon Music Podcast is a Spoook Media production. Spoook is also a record label, a promoter, a shop, a Substack - it's many things. The pandemic found Lou Barlow enamored with a surprising new creative outlet. The musician took to social media like Instagram and YouTube, playing songs, performing covers and celebrating holidays with his young family. In one video, he's dressed as the Easter Bunny. In another, he's covering the Paw Patrol theme with his own lyrics. It's a side of the Sebadoh/Folk Implosion/Dinosaur Jr. musician few have seen. Released in May, the fourth solo record under his own name (though, the counting is a bit tricky) Reason to Live finds the singer settling into a warm domestic life that mirrors those recent videos.

Have you ever been listening to Sebadoh and thought to yourself "wow, this song is great, I really want to know what the guy singing it thinks about the 1978 Disney live action movie The Cat from Outer Space"? Indie rock legend Lou Barlow, of Dinosaur Jr, Sebadoh, the Folk Implosion, and more, joins Garrett Martin to talk about that movie and its similarities to E.T., as well as '70s Disney in general, the viewing habits of modern kids, and the two new records he released this spring: Dinosaur Jr.'s Sweep It Into Space, and his own solo album Reason to Live.
“Reason To Live” Well, if your looking for the kings of the indie rock grand slam, it's a short list. But Lou Barlow is on it. The Ohio-born Barlow has Dinosaur Jr., Sebadoh, the folk Implosion and his solo career on his CV and that's only a partial list that doesn't include Sentridoh and Deep Wound. Yes, Lou Barlow has been a major part of major bands that were all groundbreaking and game changers in terms of sound, recording approach and aesthetic. He's been on legendary labels like SST, Homestead , Sub Pop, Merge and Domino and he's one of the most recognizable and adored indie rock dudes of all time. So yes, Barlow is a founding member of three groundbreaking indie rock outfits and his solo career has yielded several remarkable albums, including his fabulous new one Reason To Live. A songwriter of startling depth, introspection and pinpoint emotional accuracy, Lou Barlow is, to put it simply, one of the best we've got. Over the course of his career, he's collaborated with Mike Watt, Stephen Merritt, Dale Crover of the Melvins and Belgian musician Rudy Trouve' He's both vulnerable and brave his work redolent with intimacy, observational wisdom and longing. Reason To Live might very well be his best work yet. Managing to be both layered and spare, this album is filled with breezy acoustic numbers, rolling pop jangles and textured indie rock that's catchy, memorable and moving. In this conversation Lou talks to Alex about eating dinner with strangers, walking the financial tightrope, writing again with John Davis of The Folk Implosion and why it was so hard to ask J. Mascis for a drumbeat….

Ryan and Damon Gross (Joy Luck Division, The Visitors Q) discuss the soundtrack to the 1995 Larry Clarke film, Kids. It produced the surprise Billboard Top 40 Single, "Natural One" by The Folk Implosion, Lou Barlow's 3rd most famous band. They discuss the influence of the soundtrack's artists on their lives as well as how Kids launched the career of soundtrack supervisor, Randall Poster.
When he was 16, Lou Barlow formed Deep Wound. Two years later, he and the hardcore band’s drummer, J Mascis would create Dinosaur Jr. (then simply Dinosaur), one of alternative’s most beloved and influential groups. Barlow stuck around for three albums — regarded by many as the band’s best. That would have been enough to have cemented his status in the indie rock pantheon, but the music would go on to form an additional pair of hugely influential groups: Sebadoh and The Folk Implosion. The former, in particular was a defining voice of the genre’s lo-fi revolution. And like Dinosaur, the group resumed operations earlier this century, now boasting a pair of post-hiatus LPs. 2013’s Defend Yourself was met with largely positive reviews, though Barlow is quick to dismiss certain aspects as the result of a particular rough patch in his personal life. This year’s Act Surprised, however, finds both Barlow and the rest of the group in top form.

Lou Barlow's creative output goes by many names, Sebadoh, Dinosaur Jr., Folk Implosion, Sentridoh, and Loobiecore. Throughout his career he's carved out a niche for himself as a the unofficial godfather of low-fi folk music and/or emo. For some he is the Bob Dylan of the alternative music scene; uninhibited, brutally honest, sensitive and a touch avant garde. Our own Branan Edgens has been a big fan for over 25 years and is excited for you to join him on part 1 “A Partial History of Lou Barlow”. Music from this episode in order of appearance: "Poledo" - Dinosaur Jr. "Meaningless Dead End" - Sentridoh "Severed Lips" - Dinosaur Jr. "My Own Religion/Ride the Darker Wave" - Sebadoh "Brand New Love" - Sebadoh "The Freed Pig" - Sebadoh "Sexual Confusion" - Sebadoh "Natural One" - The Folk Implosion "Free To Go" - The Folk Implosion "Caterpillar Girl" - Lou Barlow "Goin' Down" - Dinosaur Jr.
This week, I talk to a guy named Lou Barlow. You may know him as the bassist in Dinosaur Jr., but hopefully you really know him from Sebadoh, The Folk Implosion, and his solo work. Lou’s a unique, gifted songwriter and musician—one of my favorites actually, and it was a thrill to get a chance to talk to him. He wasn’t really promoting anything, so we just chatted about music—it was great. If you’re not familiar with Lou’s work, I recommend starting with Sebadoh’s Harmacy and his first solo album, EMOH. Also, pop on over to http://www.loobiecore.com/ to learn more about the world of Lou. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Special LIVE interview with K Records' Jeremy Jay. He called in from Portland about half way through the show and we had a nice/somewhat awkward conversation. I played eight (8!) of his songs, a Folk Implosion song (guess which one), an Eric's Trip song, "Stop or Start" by Fine Mist and "Here Comes The Summer" by the Fiery Furnaces. It was an exciting 63 minutes!
