In the 1940s and 50s there was the great American comic book scare. Many serious adults warned that comic books were turning young people into illiterate, criminally violent, sexually deviant political extremists. There were several editorials in newspapers that argued as much. There were groups who organized literal comic book burnings. Local jurisdictions passed laws to limit the sale of comic books. There was even a televised congressional hearing on comic books by the United States Senate Subcommittee on Juvenile Delinquency. This was a widespread phenomena that can't be laid at the feet of any one person. But there is one person who did more than anyone to legitimize this panic: Dr. Fredric Wertham. He was a well-credentialed German-American psychiatrist best known for his anti-comics book Seduction of the Innocent: The Influence of Comic Books on Today's Youth. The scientific worthlessness of Wertham's theories has been clear to historians of comic books and even some of his contemporaries. However, it wasn't until 2012, three decades after his death, that the full extent of the worthlessness of his anti-comic book work was revealed. After a historian was able to read his raw clinical notes for the first time, it was discovered that many claims in his book Seduction of the Innocent were wholly fabricated. His anti-comic book claims weren't merely the product of sloppy science, but lies and distortions. Come to Chicago for lunch with Carol Tilley as we discuss how we each first learned about the Comics Code, the mostly forgotten rich kid origins of Blondie's Dagwood Bumstead, the unsettling inconsistencies she discovered while going through 200 boxes of Fredrick Wertham's papers, what those documents reveal about how he came to believe what he came to believe, what it means to research with the brain of an historian, the proper pronunciations of Potrzebie and Mxyzptlk, her efforts to track down those who wrote letters to the Senate protesting comic book censorship during the '50s (including one of the founders of the Firesign Theater), the enduring power of EC's "Judgment Day," why she believed comic book censorship would have occurred even without Wertham's input, what she thinks he'd make of today's comics, how Wertham felt about the way comic book fans felt about him, and much more.

Today's episode is about Yoshihiro Tatsumi. The man who coined the term "Gekiga" and deliberately chose to make a new type of sequential art. One that explores the darkness and hardship of an adult, working class world. Thus continuing our season where we cover manga about being a manga artist. skip summary @ 5:14 084: A Drifting Life By Yoshiro Tatsumi Translation by Adrian Tomine Yoshihiro Tatsumi was born 1935 and lived to the age of 79, having died of cancer on a Saturday in March 2015, Tatsumi started doing 4 panel cartoons before doing more long form works with Hinomaru Bunko of the Shadow Magazine. In 1956 a studio was formed and named the Manga Camp, this would become the base of operations for Shadow and mangaka specialising in the genre of Gekiga, or Komaga as one of his peers called it, what they were working towards wasn't clear yet, but Shadow magazine made Manga for adults with emphasis on gritty drama inspired by hardboiled detective novels, film noir and the films of the French new wave. Gekiga would truly find its purpose in 1959 when Tatsumi made stories for the Magazines City and Skyscraper alongside his group known as the Gekiga workshop. Whom together created a Gekiga manifesto. By the early 60's even Garo magazine, whom Tatsumi turned down due to lack of pay would become successful with its own Gekiga artists such as Sanpei Shirato. This proved that there was a need for long form storytelling, aimed at adults during a time when America's occupation of Japanese land was being challenged. And at the same time an economic boom was in full bloom. Tatsumi's last Japanese published works was ‘Fallen Words' a collection of Rakugo shorts, a sort of comedic folk tales known for ending on a punch line but done in the manga medium. This was followed by his award-winning manga memoirs in 2009 which will be the topic of our episode. According to the American publishing house Drawn and Quarterly, it is unclear if his memoirs, ‘A drifting Life', was ever finished but in the edition that we've read there was a final epilogue chapter that ends with the funeral of Osamu Tezuka. Sadly, there is no mention of his marriage in his memoirs. If Tezuka is seen as the god of Manga, then Tatsumi is undoubtedly the one who helped Manga mature, scholars now recognise Tatsumi's influence more so than ever now that we live in a world where adults need manga. And in a roundabout way Tatsumi did inspire Tezuka. Topics:   Risk of defamation is the reason why the names are changed in the manga. The word used for defamation in Japanese literally translates to “Damaged Honour”, with one's honour and reputation holding an incredible amount of significance in Japanese culture. AX manga was James' first introduction to Tatsumi's work. Itself a book of alternative manga, and AX is a predecessor to Garo Magazine.   Tatsumi shines a light on the business tensions of making manga. Specifically knowing when to jump ship of a failing company. You can't work for everyone and like the old saying when it rains it pours; Or you wait a long time for one bus then three come at once. This can happen. It's wise to keep your cards close to your chest when you go out drinking with the boss, being sure not to let them know all your plans regarding the future. What stops ‘A Drifting Life' from being an entertaining read is that sensational titles and chapters rarely have a sense of tension, Tatsumi fails to convey the challenges of making manga during the 50's, oddly it makes sense that his most prolific work came out at the time that would make for boring memoirs. Because he would have met least resistance. Since the transition between magazine to Tankobon started there was a lucrative business that involved renting manga books that occurred in the late 1950's   Still Life Classes are incredibly valuable to manga artists, but as James mentioned, action figures are also good too, recommending the brands Max Factory and Figma. More so because of the control one has over poses and lighting, however there is limits to using this as a learning instrument.   The environment that Gekiga was made in is important to consider, especially when you realise that in the west, Frederic Wertham's ‘Seduction of the Innocence' grew in popularity. Note that Wertham himself was not a bad guy, He treated black kids in 1946, a time of racial segregation, opening the Lafargue Clinic within Harlem, Manhattan. After leaving the Gekiga workshop Tatsumi wrote a 120-page long form story in 20 days. The manga was Black Blizzard. Cartoonist kayfabe has an interesting video about it. A 2011 Film adaptation directed by Eric Khoo, simply called ‘Tatsumi' uses ‘A Drifting Life' as a connective frame so to tell an anthology of Tatsumi stories. The writer to ‘The Boys' is Garth Ennis, who has been very clear on his thoughts towards fantasy writing and the superhero genre. His contemporaries, Warren Ellis and Grant Morrison have their own opinions on the superhero genre also. Although their stories are very much fantasy and have subject matter about superheroes, their tonally dark stories and further exploration of more adult themes is antithetical to what we see in most manga aimed at young boys. It seems like Almost Yesterday that hundreds of comic books and magazines, judged as indecent and unfit for children, were ceremonially burned in Cape Girardeau . The date was February 24, 1949, and the location was St. Mary’s High School on the corner of Sprigg and William Streets. This large burning was one of many that emerged across the nation in 1948-49, seeking to eliminate the perceived dangers of the “new” graphic comic books. In the Depression years of the 1930’s, comic books gained widespread popularity, and began to attract criticism for the vivid use of violence. But, World War II brought even greater use of graphic violence, and by the end of the war more than 60 million comic books per month were being sold in the United States. In 1948 critics of this new and popular form of entertainment found an articulate voice in Dr. Fredric Wertham, a German-born medical doctor, who blamed comic books for the troubling new behavior in youngsters. In 1948 Dr. Wertham published a

The third episode of History Honeys brings Grant to the hot seat to talk about The Comics Code Authority; its beginnings, its effects, and its legacy. If it seems like Alaina doesn't say much, it's because she was too busy trying to keep her composure in the face of the all-too familiar story of misplaced outrage and artistic repression. She made some incredible faces, though. Is scapegoating and censorship the path of least resistance? Can history remember anyone for more than one thing? How long of a shadow can one moment cast? Recommendations: Saga, I Hate Fairyland, Archie, The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck, Starchie (and all of Will Elder and Wally Wood's work on MAD), The Lee/Kirby run on Fantastic Four (issues 1-102), Figment from the Disney Kingdoms line of books inspired by theme park attractions, and many other books we didn't mention in the recording. An article about Wertham's manipulation of facts to fit his argument: https://news.illinois.edu/blog/view/6367/204890 And a big thanks to the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund. In his 1948 essay, “Harlem is Nowhere,” Ralph Ellison decried the psychological disparity between formal equality and discrimination faced by Blacks after the Great Migration as leaving “even the most balanced Negro open to anxiety.” In Under the Strain of Color: Harlem's Lafargue Clinic and the Promise of an Antiracist Psychiatry (Cornell University Press, 2015), Gabriel Mendes undertakes an engaging study of race and mental health in the 20th century through the lens of an overlooked Harlem clinic. While providing the first in-depth history of the Lafargue Clinic (1946-58), the book focuses on the figures who came together in a seemingly unlikely union to found it: Richard Wright, the prominent author; Fredric Wertham, a German Jewish emigre psychiatrist now known for his advocacy for censorship of comic books; and The Reverend Shelton Hale Bishop, an important Harlem pastor. Wright's literary prowess, work for the Communist party, and brush with Chicago School sociology met with Wertham's socially-conscious and uncompromising brand of psychoanalysis to challenge mainstream psychiatric theory and its discriminatory practices in the Jim Crow North. Those who could afford it were charged 25 cents for sessions in the basement of St. Philip's Episcopal church in Harlem, and 50 cents for court testimonials. A thoroughgoing grassroots effort, ignored by philanthropists and state funding, the Lafargue Clinic throws mid-20th Century mental health and race relations into relief, and is sure to stir interest in the untold stories of projects like it. In 1954, psychiatrist Dr. Fredric Wertham wrote a scathing indictment of comic books called Seduction of the Innocent. Its central premise was that comics were the leading contributing factor to juvenile delinquency. (At the time, 90% of all children were reading comic books.) That same year, Dr. Wertham testified at special hearings on comic books at the Senate Subcommittee to Investigate Juvenile Delinquency in the United States. Comic books were on trial! Diagram for Delinquents captures the zeitgeist of late 1940s / early 1950s America and investigates how the funny books found themselves on the bonfire.
