There was something distinctly unrelaxed about the way that Tony Tulathimutte, one of the more talented young writers at work in America today, announced the publication of “The Feminist,” a new short story, back in the fall of 2019.“To be clear in advance,” Tulathimutte wrote on Twitter, “feminism is good, this character is not good.”These days, when the faintest gust of heterodoxy is enough to start an internet stampede, it may be wise to put some moral distance between yourself and your protagonists, but as Tulathimutte soon found out, it's no guarantee you won't be caught in the crush. 10 years ago, Palestinian Professor Refaat Alareer (z''l) appeared on the original version of Beyond The Pale with his student, Yousef Aljamal, while on US tour with their book, Gaza Writes Back. Shoshana Brown and Rafael Shimunov replay segments of that episode from the the Beyond The Pale archives, housed at The Tamiment Library and Robert F. Wagner Labor Archives at NYU. Rafael describes his relationship with Refaat, why it was so hard to edit these clips. Shoshana speaks on collective liberation, and healing after Refaat's and his family's murder by Israeli forces. And Yousef, now a scholar himself, opens archives with a tribute to Refaat. We hear the voices of past show hosts, including Alex Kane, Esther Kaplan and Marilyn Kleinberg Neimark--and its original intro. We open the show with Brian Cox's reading of Refaat's final poem, "If I Must Die" and cover his impact around the world and across the campus protests by students across the United States and world. And we closed the show with a reading from the book itself, Gaza Writes Back: Short Stories from Young Writers in Gaza, Palestine. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/beyondthepale/message

Back from a too-short break, but ready to delve into the greatest haunted house of them all! Shirley Jackson's Hill House. The place where the scary things walk alone. Thankfully, I am not alone. I'm joined by my own group of creepy ghost-hunters: Paul Tremblay (A Head Full of Ghosts, Cabin at the End of the World), Johnny Compton (The Spite House) and Catriona Ward (Last House on Needless Street, Looking Glass Sound). I can think of no better collective to explore the corridors of this book and house. We get INTO it. The crafted magic of that infamous opening paragraph, the long legacy of creepy houses in American fiction, the choice between the haunted void and hideous, mundane reality. Plus, a raft of film recommendations, and a few brief forays into our favourite real haunted places. This one was necessary. Hope you enjoy it. In the summer of 2022, Press Pass NYC launched a fellowship for aspiring high school student journalists. A cohort of students from around NYC began their journeys in a summer bootcamp, where they learned the basics of journalistic writing and reporting.“It brings like a huge responsibility, knowing that you're going to take all this information and bring it back to the school,” said Ashley Conde Lopez, reporter for The Writer's Weekly at the Academy for Young Writers in Brooklyn. Our team followed these Press Pass Fellows from bootcamp through the school year to see the results of their training and preparation. Three schools are featured here: The Institute for Health Professions at Cambria Heights; The Academy for Young Writers; and Health, Education and Research Occupations (H.E.R.O.) High School. Can these three schools overcome the obstacles of an unequal education system to create successful student newspapers? Tune in to find out.——The Missing Voices series was reported by Wesley Almanzar, Jadelyn Camey, Fredlove Deshommes, Edward Mui and Jayden Williams. Editing and production support from Sabrina DuQuesnay, Mira Gordon, Abē Levine and Taylor McGraw.Scoring and sound mixing from Peter Leonard. What starts as a conversation on homeschooling multiple children turns into a rich discussion on the nature of learning, teaching, and avoiding the pitfalls of home education. Missy Andrews Joins Yvette Hampton to share wisdom from her many years as a homeschool mom, curriculum publisher, and literature expert. Watch this full conversation on our YouTube channel. This week Missy and Yvette cover the following topics: Is it really possible for me to give my kids a top drawer, literary education when I am just one person - and maybe not even a very well-educated person? How can the concept of mastery education intensify the already substantial burden that homeschooling parents carry? How might clarifying our definition of education free us from the tyranny of booklists? If education isn't a list of facts and books, then what is it? If education is less about how many books you read and more about how you read them, then my booklist just got a lot shorter! Isn't this too good to be true? How might an unexamined view of success and identity complicate the homeschooling process? How does the gospel liberate us to homeschool our kids joyfully and graciously? This week, Stuart Heritage joins us from the U.K. to chat about the scandal that has embroiled two of the country's institutions: the BBC and Premier League soccer. And while we are in the U.K., Daisy Dawnay takes us inside a centuries-old library that is the hot spot for a new generation of writers—and writer hookups. And finally, Antonia Woloshyn discusses her shocking report on how neo-Nazi elements have infiltrated German law enforcement.
