My guest again this week is Christopher S. Connelly, author of the fascinating new book HELEN MORGAN — THE ORIGINAL TORCH SINGER AND ZIEGFELD'S LAST STAR. The topics discussed in this episode include: Morgan's follow up to Show Boat, the 1929 hit musical Sweet Adeline — a star vehicle created especially for her by Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II. The 1932 revival of Show Boat and subsequent tour. Morgan's career as a nightclub hostess and entertainer at a series of night spots named for her including Chez Morgan, Helen Morgan's Summer House, and The House of Morgan. The Ziegfeld Follies of 1931. And Helen Morgan as a Gay Icon and the "Pansy Craze" stars who imitated her. Christopher S. Connelly is a film and theater historian. His work has appeared in Etcetera magazine and the Kino Lorber DVD release of Mamoulian's Applause. He is also an actor, Roman Catholic cantor, and chorister for the Atlanta Opera. This week my, guest is Christopher T. Connelly, the author of the fascinating new book HELEN MORGAN — THE ORIGINAL TORCH SINGER AND ZIEGFELD'S LAST STAR. There are a number of individuals who were very big Broadway stars back in what I call the Silver Age of Broadway (the 1920s and 30s), But who today are mostly overlooked and left out of the conversation. Performers who were on a level with Jolson and Cantor and Fanny Bryce, but whose fame has almost entirely faded. Of course most musical theater fans will know the name Helen Morgan, and know that she originated the role of "Julie" in Show Boat. But if you are like me, you will be largely unaware, of the incredible range of her talents, the depth and breadth of her career, and the level of her stardom. And I have no doubt that you'll be as fascinated by this book and by this conversation as I was. Christopher S. Connelly is a film and theater historian. My guest is Christopher S. Connelly, author of Helen Morgan: The Original Torch Singer and Ziegfeld's Last Star. Morgan was a hugely popular singer and actress who set the template for musical theater performance style. We talked about Morgan's big heart, her deeply emotional connection with audiences, and how her approach to life was more Auntie Mame than as the downtrodden songstress she has been typically rumored to be. In this episode, I spoke with author Christopher S. Connelly about his recent book "Helen Morgan: The Original Torch Singer and Ziefeld's Last Star". An emotive soprano voice, heartrending melodies about unrequited love, and a draped-over-the-piano persona made Helen Morgan (1902–1941) the original torch singer, but she was so much more. The versatile actress appeared on Broadway, in film, and on radio. In a number of stage revues, she danced, sang, and excelled in sketch comedy.

This week on Vintage Classic Radio's "Sunday Night Playhouse," we journey back to the golden era of radio with a special presentation of "Ziegfeld Follies of the Air 1936," originally broadcasted by Lux Radio Theatre on February 29, 1936. This radio play, an adaptation of the illustrious stage show created by Florenz Ziegfeld, captures the essence of 1930s entertainment and brings it to life for modern audiences. The Ziegfeld Follies, a hallmark of American entertainment, transitioned from the stage to the airwaves during the 1930s, thanks to CBS Radio. This adaptation, a blend of music, comedy, and drama, was part of a series that aired as a tribute to Florenz Ziegfeld after his passing in 1932. The radio adaptation, authored by the talented team at Lux Radio Theatre, keeps the spirit of Ziegfeld's vision alive, infusing each episode with the glamour and allure of the original stage shows. Hosted by Eddie Dowling and featuring the musical direction of Al Goodman, this episode showcases a stunning array of talent. Notable performances include Fanny Brice, bringing her comedic genius in the role of Baby Snooks; Helen Morgan, with her enchanting vocal performances; and Jack Pearl, who introduces the audience to the humorous character of "Baron Munchausen." The episode also stars Will Rogers, delivering his trademark wit, and a rare radio appearance by Ziegfeld himself. The cast list for this memorable broadcast includes: Eddie Dowling as the Host Al Goodman leading the Orchestra Fanny Brice as Baby Snooks Helen Morgan in various musical numbers Jack Pearl as Baron Munchausen Will Rogers in comedic monologues Florenz Ziegfeld in a special appearance Other notable guests include Patty Chapin, James Melton, and Benny Fields, each adding their unique flair to this historic broadcast. Few episodes of this series survive, making this broadcast a precious piece of entertainment history. Tune in to Vintage Classic Radio this Sunday for an unforgettable trip down memory lane, celebrating the legacy of one of America's greatest showmen, Florenz Ziegfeld.

In this episode, Drs. Maya Hammoud and Helen Morgan of the University of Michigan join Drs. Amy Park and Mark Hoffman to discuss the OB/GYN residency application process. --- EARN CME Reflect on how this Podcast applies to your day-to-day and earn free AMA PRA Category 1 CMEs: https://earnc.me/MeFKJY --- SHOW NOTES Dr. Maya Hammoud is Chief of Women's Health Division and Associate Chair for Education at the University of Michigan. Dr. Helen Morgan is the Director of Residency Preparation Courses at the University of Michigan. Together, Drs. Hammoud and Morgan are leading the $1.7 million American Medical Association (AMA) Reimagining Residency Grant for Association of Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics (APGO) Right Resident, Right Program, Ready Day One. The episode begins with Drs. Hammoud and Morgan sharing a call to action regarding the need to transition the emphasis of applying to residency from the lens of individual achievements to that of an individual's competency as a future physician. The two physicians share what inspired them to contribute to making changes in the realm of OB/GYN, including personal experiences from advising medical students at the University of Michigan to their own family members. During this time, they address pitfalls of the current system, including the financial expenses for applications. The group then transitions to describe the 5-year grant that led to the development of Right Resident, Right Program, Ready Day One. The program addresses 2 components: (1) the application process itself, and (2) students' readiness for residency. The physicians cover the topic of “application fever” (i.e., the large increase in the number of applications that each student submits), and how the field of OB/GYN has adopted “program signaling” with the hope to mitigate this ongoing trend. Drs. Hammoud and Morgan also address topics such as growth mindset, holistic review of applications, importance of coaching for preparation for residency, and the increasing popularity of OB/GYN as a specialty. Lastly, the group highlights other aspects of the residency application process, including methods to ensure an equitable review process, the need to increase diversity in the field, the standardized letter of evaluation (SLOE), and best practices to facilitate transition to residency. During this conversation, Drs. Hammoud and Morgan share about the residency preparation courses that are available for medical students at the University of Michigan.

'Whiteness' is a politically constructed category which needs to be understood and dismantled because the system of racism so embedded within our society harms us all. It has profound implications for human psychology, an understanding of which is essential for supporting the movement for change. Helen Morgan's The Work of Whiteness: A Psychoanalytic Perspective (Routledge, 2021)explores these implications from a psychoanalytic and Jungian analytic perspective. The 'fragility' of whiteness, the colour-blind approach and the silencing process of disavowal as they develop in the childhood of white liberal families are considered as means of maintaining white privilege and racism. A critique of the colonial roots of psychoanalytic theories of Freud and Jung leads to questioning the de-linking of the individual from society in modern day analytic thinking. The concept of the cultural complex is suggested as a useful means of connecting the individual and the social. Examples from the author's clinical practice as well as from public life are used to illustrate the argument. Relatively few black people join the psychoanalytic profession and those who do describe training and membership as a difficult and painful process. How racism operates in clinical work, supervision and our institutions is explored, and whilst it can seem an intractable problem, proposals are given for ways forward. This book will be of great importance to psychoanalysts, psychotherapists, social workers and all those with an interest in the role of white privilege on mental health. Chris Mason presents political debate from Highfields School, Matlock.
This is the first episode of a new Broadway Nation mini-series that explores what I am calling, “The Other Broadway”. Today when we see or hear the word “Broadway”, we most likely think of New York's Theater District and it's 41 active theaters nestled in and around Times Square (where today 36 plays and musicals have thankfully returned to the stage!) Or that word evokes the legendary cannon of shows that have played in those theaters, most especially those great, glorious Broadway musicals that up until now have been the principal subject of this podcast. That, however, is really only part of what “Broadway” has meant to most people during the first half of the 20th Century – when Broadway was at the center of American culture. For more than 5 decades the word “Broadway” meant not just the performances in the legitimate theaters – those Plays, Musicals, and Revues. But also, or even more so, it meant the Nightlife that surrounded them. From the 1910s through the 1950s there were hundreds of cabarets, speakeasys and nightclubs crammed into the Theater District. And they epitomized “Broadway” just as much as what was happening in the theaters, In fact, the most famous songs about Broadway – those anthemic tributes that you hear on every Tony Awards show and every Broadway themed occasion such as “Give My Regards To Broadway”, “Lullaby Of Broadway” and “On Broadway” – all have lyrics that are much more about the nightlife than they are about the shows. During this series I will lead my listeners on a late night tour of Broadway's most famous hot spots including Rector's, Reisenweber's, The El Fay Club, Club Durant, Club Richman, The Hotsy Totsy Club, Club Alabam, The Silver Slipper, The Pansy Club, The Stork Club, Casa Lopez, La Conga, 21, The Parody Club, The Rainbow Room, The Latin Quarter, El Morocco, The Astor Roof, The Cotton Club (it was in Times Square for a while), Billy Rose's Diamond Horseshoe, The Copacabana and many more. There you will rub elbows with such stars as Vernon & Irene Castle, James Reese Europe, Sophie Tucker, Clifton Webb, George Raft, Rudolph Valentino, Gilda Gray, Texas Guinan, Ethel Waters, Florence Mills, Helen Morgan, Harry Richman, Bill Robinson, Cab Calloway, Desi Arnaz, Tommy Dorsey, Frank Sinatra, Fats Waller, and Clayton, Jackson, & Durante to name only a few. However, before we venture out into the night, we need to look back to the origins of this other side of Broadway, so in this first episode I explore exactly where New York nightlife began. I hope that you enjoy it. I am now entirely obsessed and fascinated by this subject! Please let me know what you think! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

This week's episode is a musical celebration of all things spring. As in all episodes of this sort, it features a wide range of singers in performances recorded over the course of many decades, all singing about the delights (and sometimes the heartbreak) of spring. Artists include Carmen McRae, Beniamino Gigli, Elisabeth Söderström, Helen Morgan, Leontyne Price, Judy Collins, Eartha Kitt, Emma Calvé, Eileen Farrell, Kaye Ballard, Gérard Souzay, Patricia Neway, and Edith Piaf, among many others, singing songs of Tommy Wolf, Fran Landesman, Georges Auric, Hugo Wolf, Lerner and Loewe, Dietrich Buxtehude, Alec Wilder, and Paolo Tosti. A vernal feast for the ears! The Countermelody podcast is devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Singer and vocal aficionado Daniel Gundlach explores great singers of the past and present focusing in particular on those who are less well-remembered today than they should be. Daniel's lifetime in music as a professional countertenor, pianist, vocal coach, voice teacher, and journalist yields an exciting array of anecdotes, impressions, and “inside stories.” At Countermelody's core is the celebration of great singers of all stripes, their instruments, and the connection they make to the words they sing. By clicking on the following link (https://linktr.ee/CountermelodyPodcast) you can find the dedicated Countermelody website which contains additional content including artist photos and episode setlists. The link will also take you to Countermelody's Patreon page, where you can pledge your monthly support at whatever level you can afford. Bonus episodes available exclusively to Patreon supporters are currently available and further bonus content including interviews and livestreams is planned for the upcoming season.

What's it like to be stepping back into a classroom after your summer break and a new class? Nerve-wracking, I am sure, but I know as dedicated teachers you wouldn't have it any other way. The start of term is a fresh start, a clean page and we hope gives you a real buzz of excitement. What things can you do to cope and plan for your fresh start and it's a question that Helen Morgan, a previous Head of School, and now an education consultant, and Andy Bridge, a current Deputy Principal, Lead Associates of Thirsty Scholars Partnership are considering. Stepping into the classroom whether you are new to teaching or an established teacher on the first day of term is TOUGH, even in a normal academic year. Helen and Andy share experiences of their times as new teachers and having worked with a vast amount of teachers, encouraging them to take their first or next steps into the classroom. Helen and Andy's go-to framework is Barak Rosenshine's Principles of Instruction which we will be exploring in these episodes. In this episode, we start at the beginning with Step 1 and discuss the value of "Daily Review." --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/thirstyscholars/message

Elise and Dave launch their extended excursion into oligarchic auteurism with a pair of films from the studio whose special touch may very well have been its hands-off approach to directorial oversight. Certainly Behind the Make-Up (aka The Feeder) makes a very interesting companion piece to Dorothy Arzner’s later masterpiece Dance, Girl, Dance (1940) – a film discussed on this very feed earlier in 2019. It stars William Powell, Kay Francis, Fay Wray, and Hal Skelly, none of whom would wind up becoming intimately associated with Paramount (although an argument could be made for Francis). Then we turn our attention to that great cinematic marvel of the early sound era – the picture that proved talkies could move! In fact, filmed out of Paramount’s Astoria Queens facility, Applause rambles magnificently all over pre-Chrysler Building and Empire State Building Manhattan. It’s also damned moving, with a performance from Helen Morgan that’ll leave you wondering why any of us were born. Time Codes: 0h 1m 00s: Behind the Make-Up aka The Feeder (dirs..
