On July 20, 1986, partner Les Vogt and I presented Bill Medley and Bobby Hatfield, The Righteous Brothers, at the Legends of Rock'n'Roll show at EXPO 86. Their music was referred to as "Blue-Eyed Soul" and their worldwide smash ballad "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'", produced by Phil Spector, made a huge impact on radio. We first met at the Cave Theatre Restaurant back in 1962 and again in 1964 when The Righteous Brothers opened for the Beatles at their Vancouver show. Other hits included three 1965 Top Tens – "Just Once in My Life", "Unchained Melody", "Ebb Tide", and the massive 1966 #1 hit "(You're My) Soul and Inspiration", plus the 1974 comeback hit "Rock and Roll Heaven". My friend John Mackie, writing for the Vancouver Sun, applauded the duo's "solid, well-paced performance" and noted "Medley has to have the deepest voice this side of Gary Puckett, and when he leans into a lyric, he leans into a lyric, goin' way, way deep down blue." Bobby Hatfield died in 2003 and Bill Medley continued to perform as a solo artist. It was a thrill to have Bill perform at the Red Robinson Show Theatre's grand opening in 2008 and again in 2010 and 2012. And who else but Bill could wrap up my final CISL radio show in 2017 with his huge hit "(I've Had) The Time Of My Life"? The Righteous Brothers were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2003. Bill Medley re-formed The Righteous Brothers with Bucky Heard and they continue to perform as a duo. Visit Bill and Bucky at righteousbrothers.com Coming up: a one-week break for the Legends, and what a surprise, Chuck Berry cancels! Tenth in a series celebrating the 35th Anniversary of the Legends of Rock'n'Roll.

Lesley Gore topped the C-FUNtastic Fifty for the third straight week on this day in 1963 with “It's My Party,” produced by the legendary Quincy Jones! The song sold more than 1 million copies. Lesley followed up with "Judy's Turn to Cry", “That's the Way Boys Are,” “She's a Fool,” “Maybe I Know,” “Sunshine, Lollipops and Rainbows” and another million seller, “You Don't Own Me.” Lesley was part of the lineup for the Legends Of Rock'n'Roll at Expo '86. She was a guest on Timmy's Christmas Telethon in 1989 and that's where we recorded this interview. In the early 2000's Lesley played the Silver Reef Casino south of the border. She called me from her home in New York and asked if I would introduce her at the Silver Reef. I agreed and said it would be an honour. Her credentials speak volumes. Lesley Gore died of cancer at New York-Presbyterian Hospital in Manhattan in February, 2015. She was 68. One of the great ladies of rock and roll.
We don't always reach our end goal in the time or manner in which we envision and it hurts, right? We must remember that efforts do count and should not be discarded, as they are the building blocks toward success. Join us as we discuss why we may not reach our envisioned successes YET, and how to find value in these bumps in the road. Failure lies in not trying so continue to strive and you will, as Les Brown says, "fail your way to success." Music and political journalist John Harris joins us just before Bob Dylan’s 80th birthday to celebrate the man with “the wink and the nod and the little impish skip” as well as the man who gives us “the solace of emptiness”. Mr Harris is not afraid to go against the grain: “”Love And Theft” is as good as Highway 61 or Blood On The Tracks”. As for John Wesley Harding, he happily quotes a friend who told him, “we wanted a big meal and he gave us a salad. It’s good for you - but a bit chewy.” The highlight of the episode might be John’s invitation - via pal Cerys Matthews - to meet Dylan backstage after his concert at the O2: “my internal monologue was going crazy. Brain fog was settling in. I was running out of breath.” (we won’t spoil the ending here). From making a Dylan-inspired harmonica rack out of a coat hanger at age 10 to reviewing the entire 1966 Live Recordings box set for MOJO magazine years later (“I’m still recovering”), John has heard every permutation of Bob on Dylan’s way to the Big 8-0. Was it worth it? “I like the way he sounds now. I want him to sound like that”. John Harris has been a music journalist for Sounds, Melody Maker and the NME. He was Features Editor at Q and Editor of Select magazine, before returning to the life of a freelance writer. Since then, he has written about music for Q, MOJO and Rolling Stone, and contributed articles on a variety of subjects to the UK newspapers The Independent, The Times and The Observer. He now writes about politics, music and culture for The Guardian. He was also a regular panellist on BBC2’s Newsnight Review. His first book, The Last Party: Britpop, Blair And The Spectacularly Demise Of English Rock was published in 2003. His second, a primer for disillusioned Labour voters, So Now Who Do We Vote For?, appeared in 2005. The Dark Side Of The Moon: The Making of The Pink Floyd Masterpiece was published in 2006. And Hail! Hail! Rock’n'Roll, a compendium, was released in 2009. Twitter Trailer Spotify playlist Listeners: please subscribe and/or leave a review and a rating. For this beer-soaked episode of Play That Rock'n'Roll, we are joined by my friend Kyle to sample seven beers that were produced or inspired by some of our favorite rockstars. We try TROOPER and SUN AND STEEL from Robinsons, A TOUT LE MONDE from Unibroue, TOUCH OF HAZE and SOUNDBOARD from Destihl, BITCHES BREW from Dogfish Head, and LANDSHARK LAGER! After sampling them, we discuss what types of beer they are, and finally, we rank them based on our personal preferences. Alejandro Rose Garcia's 2011 album is one of Bandcamp's most downloaded folk records. He joins us to discuss the record's deluxe reissue.
For this free-wheeling episode of Play That Rock'n'Roll, we are joined by my friend Chris to sample Heaven's Door Double Barrel Whiskey, which was produced by a distillery that partnered with Bob Dylan. Once we get a taste of the whiskey, we pivot to a discussion about the man behind it. We talk about Bob's songwriting, vocal stylings, and connections to both classic rock and folk. We laugh about some of the funnier aspects of Bob's career, and we share our experiences of seeing Bob in concert. And finally, we list off a few of our favorite albums and songs. Charlotte Donlon talks to Delvyn Case about some of the ways Jesus shows up in popular music. They discuss rap, punk, and country music artists and how Jesus is acknowledged in their music. Delvyn wrote an article for Sojourner's magazine in October 2020 titled "JESUS SHOWS UP IN DISCOS, HONKY-TONKS, BLUES BARS, AND STRIP CLUBS." This article was the jumping off point for this podcast episode. If you subscribe to Sojourner's you can read it here (https://sojo.net/magazine/december-2020/jesus-shows-discos-honky-tonks-blues-bars-and-strip-clubs), but it's not required reading for you to listen to this episode. Black hip-hop scholars recommend by Delvyn: Ebony Utley, Anthony Pinn, Michael Eric Dyson, Tricia Rose For the history of country music, Delvyn suggests the Ken Burns documentary from a few years ago. For the origins of rock'n'roll, the Rolling Stone History of Rock'n'Roll is a comprehensive resource. It delves deeply into the Black origins of the style. Another great book on the development of 60's rock out of the blues is McNally's "On Highway 61: Race, Music, and the Evolution of Cultural Freedom." Links to Delvyn's writing are here: https://www.delvyncase.com/writing Recent book with Delvyn's chapter on Jesus in popular music: https://www.scsmusic.org/publications/christian-music-in-the-americas/ Delvyn's recent recording of sacred concert music - along with listening links - can be found here: https://www.deus-ex-musica.com/case-strange-energy More on Deus Ex Musica: https://www.deus-ex-musica.com/ Delvyn Case is a musician, writer, scholar, and educator based in Boston. He is a composer of classical concert music whose work often explores themes from the Christian tradition, as well as a scholar of popular music. He writes about the intersections of music and religion for both academic and general audiences, including on his Patheos blog “Alleluia: Music and the Christian Life.” He is the founder of Deus Ex Musica, an ecumenical organization that promotes sacred music as a resource for learning and faith formation. He teaches at Wheaton College in Massachusetts – which, ironically, is a secular institution unrelated to the Wheaton College in Illinois. Charlotte Donlon is a writer and a certified spiritual director. She holds an MFA in creative writing from Seattle Pacific University where she studied creative nonfiction. Charlotte’s work has appeared in The Washington Post, Catapult, The Millions, The Christian Century, Mockingbird, and elsewhere. Her first book, The Great Belonging: How Loneliness Leads Us to Each Other, was published Broadleaf Books in November 2020.

Saxophonist Del Puschert was there in the beginning of Rock'n'Roll and is one of the very few living practitioners of the raw "honkin' sax" style developed and popularized in the 1950s. He recounts stories of playing with Elvis Presley and other greats of the era.
