On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got two women from different parts of the planet who share a common heritage and creative outlook: Serra Petale and Gaye Su Akyol. Petale is the guitarist for the multinational band Los Bitchos, which has been creating tough-to-pigeonhole instrumental music for the past seven years. The band's membership and sound are both truly worldly: Petale is from Western Australia, and her bandmates are from Uruguay, Sweden, and the UK. As you'll hear, they came together in London after Petale chased her musical dreams there, and they've made some incredibly fun music since, mixing sounds from Argentina, Turkey, and a sort of psychedelic surf-rock. Their first album, produced by Alex Kapranos of Franz Ferdinand, came with the incredible title Let The Festivities Begin!, and they just followed it with another album, the fully delightful Talkie Talkie. Check out that album's “La Bomba” right here. The other half of today's conversation joins us from her home base in Turkey. Gaye Su Akyol has been making music—not to mention painting—for the past decade, gaining a worldwide following for records that take the flavors of her country and expand them in a dozen directions. She's been politically and artistically outspoken throughout her time in the spotlight, and you can tell that won't be changing anytime soon. The title of her latest album translates to Anatolian Dragon, and here's a song whose title I won't butcher, but that translates roughly to, “I want to, but there's no hurry.” Even if you don't understand the words, it's easy to catch its groove. I mentioned that these two share a background: Gaye grew up in Turkey, as did Serra's grandparents—as it turns out pretty close to each other. So they chat a bit about that, and occasionally drop in some Turkish words as well. They chat about how women need to go the extra mile to get their art into the world, and about manifesting your dreams rather than waiting around. If that sounds a little rah-rah, Gaye actually says, jokingly, that they sound like a Nike commercial at one point. I found it fun and inspiring, and I hope you do too. Enjoy. Sanatçı Özkan Uğur, geçtiğimiz günlerde vefat etti. Vefatının ardından toplumun her kesiminden son derece olumlu mesajlar gördük. Çok az sanatçıya nasip olabilecek bir durum bu. Aklıma ilk gelen diğer örnek ise rahmetli Barış Manço, ki Barış Manço siyasette de yer almış, belediye başkanı adaylığı olan birisiydi. Özkan Uğur sadece şarkılarıyla değil, oyunculuk performansıyla da başarılı işlere imza atmış birisiydi. Az sayıda tek başına yaptığı şarkılar olsa da solo albüm yapmadı. Bugün onu anmak için Spotify'a girdiğimizde karşımıza çok az eser çıkıyor. Ama buna rağmen hem tanınıyordu hem de seviliyordu Özkan Uğur. Mazhar-Fuat-Özkan nam-ı diğer MFÖ'nün en renkli karakteriydi. Mazhar Alanson'un karizması, Fuat Güner'in ağırbaşlılığının yanında Özkan Uğur grubun neşesiydi. Vefatının ardından düzenlenen törende Mazhar Alanson ve Fuat Güner sahnede zorlukla duruyordu. Her iki isim de çok yakın dostlarını kaybetmiş oldukları her hallerinden belliydi. Mazhar Alanson'un “Özkan'cım ele güne karşı yapa yalnız böyle de olmaz ki, nasıl da gittin Özkan'ım böyle bırakılmaz ki... Gözyaşlarımız bitti mi sandın? Seni görebileceğimiz yer rüyalar artık... Deli diyorlar bize ah bu ayrılık...” sözleri bir dostun arkasından söylenebilecek en içten sözlerdendi. Yıllarca Türk Pop Müziği'nin lokomotifi olan MFÖ artık eksik. Bir daha asla aynı tempoda, aynı ritimde olamayacak. Uzun yıllar MFÖ'nün dağılacağına dair söylentiler çıkmıştı. Bugün maalesef bu durum gerçekleşti. Özkan Uğur olmadan sadece MFÖ değil bütün Türk müziği eksik kalacak. Özkan Uğur'un arkasından söylememiz gerekeni buradan da tekrar etmekte fayda var: İyi bilirdik. HALK MÜZIĞI FIRTINASI Tüm dünyada olduğu gibi ülkemizde de en fazla tercih edilen müzik dinleme platformlarının başında Spotify geliyor. Geçtiğimiz günlerde şirketin Güney ve Doğu Avrupa Müzik Direktörü Melanie Parejo şöyle bir açıklama yaptı: “Son yıllarda hem Türk Halk Müziği'nin hem de Halk Müziği severlerin değişimini yakından takip ediyoruz ve yüzyıllar boyunca çok çeşitli duyguların ifade şekli olan bu müzik türünün hiç eskimediği de aşikâr. Halk Müziği'nin yepyeni yorumlamalarla özellikle Z kuşağının ilgisini çektiği de yadsınamaz bir gerçek. Türk Halk Müziği›nin, Gaye Su Akyol gibi sanatçıların deneysel sound'ların katkısıyla Anadolu ve psych rock'ı yeniden canlandırması veya Emir Can İğrek'in folk- pop parçası Ali Cabbar'da gördüğümüz gibi farklı türlerin kaynaşmasının etkisiyle bir evrim geçirdiğine de şahit oluyoruz. Melike Şahin'den Diva Yorgun ve Hey! Douglas'tan Leylim Leylim gibi çok sevilen parçaların yorumlamaları da türün yükselişe geçmesine katkıda bulunuyor.”

Así comenzamos con Tomás de Perrate & Antonio Montoya con una sorprentente interacción entre el reggae y el flamenco; seguimos con la propuesta árabo flamenca culminado con reggae que nos trae Lorenzo Soria & Sebastián Orellana; continúa Dobet Gnahore con Kajeem mostrándonos lo bien que se llevan los sonidos afro y el reggae; Dub Fx feat. Mr. Woodnote hacen patente la buena compañía entre el reggae y el hip-hop. Por su parte Sevana nos muestra el magnífico resultado que puede llegar a concretar el reggae con connotaciones de soul; dub y samba encuentran una razón común en la secuencia brindada por Mad Professor; con Louis Torres, Colombiáfrica y Diblo Dibala escucharemos dub y cumbia de una vez; Biomigrant & El Monte Adentro nos regalan sonidos latinos y andinos perfectamente sincronizados; ritmos árabes acompañados de palmas flamencas nos lo trae Gaye Su Akyol. Por su parte Tactical Groove Orbit nos muestra un perfecto acompañamiento entre las sonoridades gypsys de centro Europa y los balkánicos. A continuación nos dejamos llevar por bases electrónicas a las que se añaden flamenco y árabe ((La Plazuela feat. Natural Language), otras con latin-funk (Freethinker Funk Essence) y electro-latino-brasileño (Robbie Rivera, Pauza & Gerardo Varela). Y para finalizar traemos un par de canciones rockeras. La primera incorporando alusiones al tex-mex (La Loma) y la segunda al mundo árabe (Altin Gün).

Gaye Su Akyol, Dana Colley, Marc Ribot and Via Mardot discuss who they would most like to collaborate with, how they deal with the politics of the industry, and which musician or band has been a game changer in their lives. Gaye Su Akyol was born in Istanbul to an artistic family. Her father Muzaffer Akyol was a painter, and her mother loved Turkish classical music. She listened to a lot of Turkish jazz and psychedelia growing up, along with bands like Led Zeppelin and Nirvana, which influenced her own songwriting. Her latest album is called Anadolu Ejderi (Anatolian Dragon), and one of her biggest inspirations is her home town of Istanbul. Dana Colley is a saxophonist from Massachusetts in the USA. He was the co-founder and baritone and tenor saxophone player in the band Morphine, and also a visual artist who studied at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design. Marc Ribot is an American guitarist whose work has touched many styles, including no wave, free jazz and Cuban music. He's known as the go-to guitar guy for all kinds of people: Tom Waits, Robert Plant and Elvis Costello, to name a few of the stars he's worked alongside. Via Mardot is a composer, singer, and multi-instrumentalist from Detroit. Her music has been heavily influenced by film music - classical, exotica, spaghetti westerns, noir - and she even plays the theremin!

El encuentro entre dos figuras especiales en las fronteras de la leyenda y la historia que Angélique Kidjo narra en su proyecto de canción a gran escala »Queen of Sheba« tuvo lugar hace más de 3.000 años. La obra, que se estrenó en Francia en el verano de 2018, imagina a la reina de Saba viajando desde el sur de Sudán para visitar al rey Salomón en Jerusalén: un encuentro que se menciona en muchos documentos históricos, por ejemplo, en el Antiguo Testamento y el Corán, y pronto se convirtió en una verdadera historia de amor. This week’s episode of Music Life gets personal with musician, producer and black belt in karate Nabihah Iqbal, who is joined by Khruangbin’s Laura Lee, as well as singers Nilüfer Yanya and Gaye Su Akyol. Laura Lee was a maths teacher turned bass player who started her musical journey 8 years ago in the three-piece band Khruangbin. The band have toured with the likes of Bonobo, Father John Misty, Massive Attack and Leon Bridges, and are known for blending global music influences, classic soul, dub and psychedelia. London-born singer-songwriter of Turkish and Barbadian descent Nilüfer Yanya started writing songs at the age of 6, and has since toured alongside The xx, Interpol and Mitski. Last year she released her debut album Miss Universe, a semi-conceptual project that blends rock, pop, electronica, R&B, and soul. And Turkish singer, songwriter, producer and audio-visual artist Gaye Su Akyol rounds off the panel. She blends traditional Turkish melodies and structures with psychedelia, surf rock and grunge. Led by Nabihah Iqbal, they’ll be discussing strange fan encounters, dating as a musician, and using music as an escape.
