Hey,In recent months, lots of high profile personalities have announced plans to get paid in crypto. The Mayors of New York and Miami joined athletes like Aaron Rodgers and Odell Beckham; and artists like 50 Cent and Mel B to get partially or fully paid in crypto. Coinbase recently partnered with UnitedMasters to let musicians receive their royalties in crypto. But is this just a gimmick for the rich? What are regular Joe and Jane doing? I’m conducting a survey to understand attitudes towards getting paid in crypto. It took me less than 1 minute to it fill out. Please let your voice be heard here! It’s anonymous. I’ll share the results with you. Besides getting paid in crypto, one could also receive crypto rewards for everyday purchases. I’ve been using the Fold card to earn bitcoin rewards for a couple months. I’ll share some of my thoughts below….and of course I’ll touch on some of the recent news developments in crypto: such as Chainlink, metaverse, Novi and regulations. Let’s go!Fold review: Bitcoin rewards card 💳Why Fold?When we got married, we paid for our honeymoon and flights to Hawaii with credit card loyalty points. We had an amazing time! But it was even sweeter knowing that we did not use cash for our luxury getaway. The Fold card presents the same allure. The opportunity to build a bitcoin stash without changing behavior was too good to pass up. How did it go?Fold started out enabling users to earn rewards by buying gift cards. Next, they graduated to offering a debit card with bitcoin buy back on all purchases.Phase 1: Gift cardsI earned 1% bitcoin rewards when I bought Amazon gift cards using Fold. I started buying $100 gift cards and pre-loading my Amazon account. I would spend cash from the gift card on my protein powder or a gift. I’m not a huge shopper but it felt pretty easy to score some free bitcoin. Bitcoin rewards: $100 Amazon gift card x 1% = $1 rewards = 0.00002 BTC rewards (assuming 1BTC = $50,000, 1% rewards for using a credit card)Yeah, the rewards are NOT huge. But I suppose they could add up if you shop a lot. Fold also has gift cards with varying bitcoin rewards from a variety of retailers like Chipotle, Banana Republic and Southwest Airlines. But you have to read the fine print - rewards might be capped at 1% if you are purchasing the gift card with a debit/credit card. Either way, might as well get free from bitcoin while you get your holiday shopping done. Additionally, Fold has an app where you can spin the wheel and potentially turbocharge your rewards or when 1 whole bitcoin! I haven’t won a bitcoin yet but I’ll continue spinning lol. Phase 2: Debit cardEarlier this year, Fold launched a debit card. I got the basic one. I figured I could earn more bitcoin from everyday transactions like going to a local coffee shop or my gym membership. Unfortunately, the card has been a disappointment. Yes, I routinely use it at my local coffee shop and my barber but it’s NOT accepted everywhere. Much to my annoyance, I have been unable to directly pay my gym membership, powerlifting coach or CashApp friends with my Fold card. I have had to develop workaround solutions to pay my coach like PayPal but PayPal charges a ~3% fee on the Fold card which is greater than the bitcoin rewards cash back. I imagine these are growing pains and will eventually be fixed. Right now, it’s incredibly annoying to have a transaction declined or be forced to pay higher fees. VerdictI still use my Fold card for a couple transactions every month. So far, I’ve racked up over $40 worth of bitcoin rewards. Nothing to get to terribly excited about. That said, I have seen folks on Twitter who have won 1 bitcoin from spinning the wheel in the Fold app. I’ve also seen people stack serious sats by putting most of their regular expenses like rent, groceries and airline tickets on their Fold card. To be honest, I could ratchet it up a notch or three. Exhibit A: My biggest recommendation to Fold is to address the pain points around payment acceptance and fees ex PayPal. What’s been your experience?NEWS1. Crypto goes to Congress👩‍⚖️CEOs of 6 crypto companies testified in front of the US House Committee on Financial Services and received encouragement from both Democrats and Republican representatives. The crypto executives provided some context on the potential and opportunities of cryptocurrencies and blockchain solutions to lower costs and drive greater inclusion. They also pleaded for more well thought out regulation to support the industry’s growth. This tone marked a departure from several years ago. Hopefully, there will be more in the future. I would like bipartisan support for crypto. 2. ChainLink: Attracting top talent 📈ChainLink connects real world data to on-chain smart contracts. So for example, a farmer in Kansas could get crop insurance with payouts triggered by weather events ex tornado. All of this could be executed with code NOT people enabled by ChainLinkThe 4-year old company has secured partnerships with a number of major players include AWS, Google, Oracle etc. Now, ChainLink Labs is attracting more big name talent: (1) Eric Schmidt, former CEO of Google, joined ChainLink as a strategic advisor (2) Mike Derezin, former VP of LinkedIn, joined ChainLink as COO. I think ChainLink is well positioned to help bring the promise of smart contracts alive for everyday use cases. It’s definitely on my radar. 3. WhatsApp testing stablecoin payments in the US 💬⚡️This is big. WhatsApp has over 2 billion monthly active users worldwide. Most of my family - scattered across Africa, Europe and North America - are daily users of WhatsApp. They may not understand crypto or stablecoins but they will eagerly use WhatsApp Pay. And more. I can see payments to merchants, lending, and so on. The question is, can Novi deliver on this promise? Last week, David Marcus, the head of Novi, announced he was leaving. Novi has suffered a string of high profile departures. From the outside looking in, it feels like a shadow of it’s former self.4. Bill Gates’ bullish on metaverse 🚀“People overestimate what can be done in one year, and underestimate what can be done in ten“. That said, I think Bill Gates is wrong here. But I also don’t know if he literally meant that MOST office meetings will switch over to the metaverse. I wonder if he was trying to make a clear statement: the metaverse is here to stay and is coming for Main Street USA. Now that’s a message I could get behind. 5. Messari 2022 crypto theses🤯Ryan Selkis, the founder of Messari - a leading crypto research firm - has dropped 165-page tome on crypto developments for 2022 for FREE. It covers everything from bitcoin to NFT, metaverse to solana and MORE!If you are new to crypto or want to learn more then I highly recommend you download it. I’m gradually consuming the content. Welcome to Finance and Fury, the Say What Wednesday edition.   Last part of a 3 part series from Ryan’s questions – looking at alternative future investment strategies Episode two weeks ago – went through debt jubilees – Last week went through policies and how these have affected asset prices This episode we will be focusing on alternative investment options – such as crypto – thinking outside traditional investments like shares or property when it comes to future investment strategies Before we start - Hypothetical question – what has more value – A litre of water or a new 60” flat screen TV Depends on your situation – and perception of value Most people would say a new TV would be more valuable – as the monetary cost is maybe around $1,000 – water out of the tap is a fraction of a cent – based around that situation – monetary only – TV is better – but what if someone is dying of thirst – water is more valuable – what if in a hypothetical situation in the future – electricity is gone – TV would have no use then and have no value Price is not value - All assets can be propped up on prices – overdemand – hand sanitizer or toilet paper Why determining the value of an investment to you is important Before looking at alternative investments – have to ask the question: What is your purpose of investing? That is where you can get value from Need to narrow it down – can’t just be something generic like to make money – or become wealthy Is it for passive income – if so, you need to invest in income paying assets Is it to accumulate wealth – if so, you need good long term growth and diversification to help protect from downside volatility – As if you are after something that gains wealth long term - then it Cant be extremely speculative – if goal is to accumulate wealth – and put it into something that only has value due to confidence – can create a situation where your goal is failed -loss of value – in addition – extreme political risks exist with some asset classes – Each traditional investment is Within the ‘system’ – this can work for people as this system protects its own - through laws – but depending on the type of asset you purchase - this can work in your favour or against you – For instance - can the investments that you are planning on purchasing be banned Will the law protect you if something illegal is done in the investments you hold? This relates to – Crypto – Done many episodes on this in the past – most were last year –older but still relevant - check out Is Bitcoin the future of money? The BIS versus BTC – What are the plans to replace current crypto currency markets? – Central banks works on Crypto and legislation pieces Ryan’s made mention of this question – he said “From this point of view I am thinking that bitcoin or cryptocurrencies that can't be 'printed' as such out of thin air and gold to a certain extent will continually rise in the future until something occurs along the lines of the government contravenes and makes policies that forbid people to hold gold or cryptocurrencies” Two major points here – the supply of an asset and the political risk For supply - True that Gold cannot be printed out of thin air – but synthetic versions of it can based around futures contracts – also the price of gold can be set by monetary authorities – Example – to be a money base $10k as a price level is what some like Jim Rickards suggest Also – some risk of fake supply – few months ago 82t of gold was found to be fake – copper Each crypto can be capped in supply – but they are exactly printed out of thin air with 1s and 0s – through process of mining – which becomes harder as each token is completed According to crypto market capitalization aggregators, thereare more than 5,000 cryptocurrencies in existence today and over 20,000 different types of markets   Going deeper is bitcoin/crypto as an option? The valuation side to it is interesting - what do you value BTC in? Is it AUD? Or USD? Think about that – is it really a new form of money if it is still valued in current currency – not in relation to good themselves Fractal version of fiat currency – you need fiat money to start with to purchase under current economy Currencies need reserves to lower chance of going to zero – without something backing it (other currencies, gold, etc.) – no perceived floor in panic – beyond this – confidence is the most important factor now How do we value currencies? Subjective theory of value – what is the value? What we can use money for – and have confidence in – This confidence comes from the ability to use it as a medium of exchange – can go buy things with AUD – need to convert back from BTC to AUD in most cases for a purchase Perception of value is important – what creates this Reserves and Gov decree - provide lots of subjective value in Fiat – lots of confidence – until there isn’t Seen currencies suffer massively under this – even with safety measures Subjective value – when btc goes 11k, is seen as subjective value – speculation in further prices Has a form of floor value mechanism – cost of mining versus price – if price goes to $2k, nobody mine – supply stop Confidence - When it is lost – depending on how bad - impossible to regain –requires confidence – or short memory The fact that BTC doesn’t have an Intrinsic value doesn’t matter as much as how resilient it is to confidence shocks– BTC just went through a confidence shock to the market – faired worse than shares Doesn’t escape concentrations in control/supply – cheapest power or deepest pockets – China has both June 2018, over 80% of Bitcoin mining is performed by six mining pools - five of those six pools are managed by individuals or organizations located in China. Other is in Iceland. First – why concentration in china? Cheap power – mining takes a lot of Electricity power requirements Why Iceland or China – mining Using as much as Nigeria – 90m people – soon as much as japan No way it can be allowed if environmentalists get wind – but that is what you need to increase mining incentives – higher prices – current cost of mining 1BTC = $4k USD If prices are low - Then you hit a wall in the mining incentives – chain creation dries up Second – control of mining production and supply allows price manipulations – unregulated Painting the tape - a form of market manipulation whereby players attempt to influence the price of a security - buying and selling it among themselves create the appearance of substantial trading activity. ... Painting the tape is an illegal activity that is prohibited – but only in markets that are regulated We are both BTC miners – we both trade the same coins back and forward – slowly increasing the Also Called a ramp – old trick – think boiler room – painting the tape Price action is going up – who would have most influence on this? Could go to $50k - Looks to be having a second wind bubble – Remember the first Massive bubble Looking back to if Crypto or Gold can be banned – this is all dependent on the legal system and the competition that these types of assets face Gold – when it was banned it was the monetary backing of the time – and the Government wanted to get as much base for the currency as possible – hence they did a massive gold buy back from the population – were ways around it – collectible coins – but in general – they couldn’t have any competition in money and needed control over the supply – For Crypto – Central banks – BIS – looking at their own forms of digital currencies – They may ban cryptos – but only if they see them as competitors to their own currencies – The types that may be competition are stablecoins - stablecoin can be pegged to a cryptocurrency, fiat money, or to exchange-traded commodities – so if any of these exist that are competition - then they would be first on the regulatory chopping block Alternatively – if too much money goes into cryptos and it is seen as a destabilising factor – that is also grounds for the powers that be to regulate   Methods of legislation to be used – while Bitcoin and similar payment structures are outside any direct control of central banks and individual governments BIS V notes that cryptocurrencies ‘can only be regulated indirectly’ and discusses some of the possible approaches. also note that ‘Since cryptocurrencies are global in nature, only globally coordinated regulation has a chance to be effective.’ What are some methods they can use? A first key regulatory challenge is anti-money laundering (AML) and combating the financing of terrorism (CFT). The question is whether, and to what extent, the rise of cryptocurrencies has allowed some AML/CFT measures, such as know-your-customer standards, to be evaded.  shutdown of Silk Road, a major marketplace for illegal drugs, suggest that a non-negligible fraction of the demand for cryptocurrencies derives from illicit activity regulation could focus on the point at which a cryptocurrency is exchanged into a sovereign currency Other existing laws and regulations relating to payment services focus on safety, efficiency and legality of use. These principles could also be applied to cryptocurrency infrastructure providers, such as "crypto wallets" ensuring consumer and investor protection - common problem is digital theft – access to distributed ledgers are complex - so most users access their cryptocurrency holdings via third parties such as "crypto wallet or exchanges” Irony is many people turned to cryptocurrencies out of distrust in banks and governments – but are relying on unregulated intermediaries – many examples like Mt Gox or Bitfinex – either being fraudulent or hacking attacks Major justification - concerns the stability of the financial system may be at risk without taking over cryptos widespread use of cryptocurrencies and related self-executing financial products will likely give rise to new financial vulnerabilities and systemic risks – Systemic risk is the competition from crypto crashing banking system cryptocurrencies with regulated financial entities could be addressed - The tax and capital treatment rules for regulated institutions wanting to deal in cryptocurrency-related assets could thus be adapted Regulate the exchanges – where most people trade crypto – you can regulate the crypto markets policy responses, including regulation of private uses of the technology, the measures needed to prevent abuses of cryptocurrencies and the delicate questions raised by the issuance of digital currency by central banks There are other laws that can achieve this – such as encryption laws – In the US - Senate Bill 4051, the “Lawful Access to Encrypted Data Act” – LEAD act - was introduced to congress last week  This could effectively make cryptos illegal as they reply on data encryption too. Your ‘wallet’ is essentially a public key / private key combination - so in theory - only you are supposed to have access to this – but with this legislation the government would have a backdoor to this . Not going to happen in Aus? Well – we got our own form of this - the Assistance and Access Act 2018 – data encryption laws already in place -   I like the idea of a currency that people can use – but it goes against the foundations of a modern economy – Not seen as enough of a threat by the monetary powers that be – Might not be thinking outside of the box enough – Personally – I don’t see Cryptos as an investment Meant to be a medium of exchange – chances gov lets it take off and replace their own forms of currency is essentially zero Those who actively trade crypto and know what they are doing can make money off it – just have to declare this as assessable incomes For me – there is too much volatility and legislation risks to see it as a viable long term strategy The real meta for future investments – not too dissimilar to that of what has done well – that with real value In all of this thought and theory – action is more important – decision fatigue – information overload – Just do and learn from that – few tips on what I have learned – real assets that people will have confidence in and will use – Bonds – Difference between Corporate credit and Gov bonds – but you wont be as rewarded for owning these due to increased supply or lowering yields when these should rise as risks of default increase Property in a lot of places is overvalued in its price – but there is some that is not block of land or an inner city apartment – what has better chance of going up in price from here? Which is already overvalued? A lot of this is monetary policy – but going forward – price growth may have to become reliant on fundamentals – which will lower demand on assets which have larger levels of supply Usable land – goats – water – own produce – or a house with a block on it has Shares – ones that people have confidence in shares in a tiny mining company that is still yet to make a profit or shares in Telstra or WOW When it comes to returns – you can get specific – growth, income, etc. Depending on what your requirements are - May be best to avoid indexes – getting a lot of companies in there that may not meet your return requirements Gold – Own gold as well - I like gold – but it forms its place in my portfolios – as a capital hedge and as a position against the devaluation of cash – gold does have long term growth when valued against cash – but doesn’t pay income Resources – water – this one is interesting – do another episode on this to expand further In summary – the investment strategy needs to be what is right for you – but it needs to be specific – not just doing something because it is the next new thing or because everyone is doing it. The third halving event in Bitcoin's history is approaching. A halving in Bitcoin is when the number of new bitcoin created roughly every ten minutes is cut in half. This change in the Bitcoin issuance rate is scheduled to take place every 210,000 blocks (around every four years).After hitting a 2020 high of over $10K in mid-February, the bitcoin price was lower than $5K a month later. Since then its been an uphill climb, the price of bitcoin has recovered somewhat to around $7.8K. Since ‘Black Thursday' (March 12), bitcoin prices have gained 103% since then rising from $3.8K to $7.8K per bitcoin. MinersHash Rate increasing 12 Days out…Miners, miners, miners…we have to remember the halving cleanses the removal of inefficient miners. We have to understand why this is important and related to bitcoin price. First the bitcoin rewards get allocated to the very efficient miners — the people that have deployed correctly relative to low [cost] electricity. Ultimately we want bitcoin in the hands of these types of miners because they do not have to sell as much bitcoin. Most if not all miners will operate at a loss after the halving, which creates even more sell pressure because everything they are mining is going to get sold. The very efficient miners have better margins, they don't have to sell as much bitcoin, because they have prepared for this adjustment. This could take 2-4 months for inefficient miners to get removed from the network. The question to ask is. “Have the miners priced in the halving?” This is the most important question when predicating price going into the halving. Which is also related to the downward bitcoin price movement?Currency WarsMoney Printer go burrrr…Adjusting the money supply in line with demand is one of the primary functions of FED and central banks. The most important rule of the game is to avoid a deflationary environment, most people expect tomorrow's dollar to be very stable. We know Fiat currencies tend to be inflationary by their nature. The importance of dynamic money supply was learned the hard way in 1929 when the FED failed to tackle a deflationary dollar. As the dollar deflated, the purchasing power of each dollar increased. People chose to save rather than spend. The velocity of money dropped, the economy contracted and the worst recession of the century followed.It is safe to acknowledge that fiat currencies are great for day-to-day transactions for now. They are fine for short term savings for now. They are convenient for rainy-day funds…not anymore they have become terrible as savings instruments.Remember Bitcoin is not a fiat currency and it is certainly not responsible for keeping liquidity within an economy. Bitcoin is a disinflationary asset with a fixed and transparent supply schedule. Don't save in fiat. This new model, known as the “S2FX”, model. PlanB's S2FX model combines the valuation of Bitcoin with assets such as gold and silver.PlanB has come to the conclusion that bitcoin as an asset is going through a series of “phase transitions”. These BTC narratives seem very continuous in the S2FX chart. However, if we combine the narratives with financial milestones (S2FX and price data), they look very much like phases with more abrupt transitions:“Proof of concept” -> after Bitcoin white paper“Payments” -> after USD parity (1BTC = $1)“E-Gold” -> after 1st halving, almost gold parity (1BTC = 1 ounce of gold)“Financial asset” -> after 2nd halving ($1Billion transactions per day milestone, legal clarity in Japan and Australia, futures markets at CME and Bakkt)This following S2FX chart shows that each new phase for Bitcoin brings a substantial uptick in bitcoin valuation with it. With a traditional S2F, PlanB previously said bitcoin was on course for a $100K valuation.But now according to PlanB, the S2FX model forecasts that the average bitcoin price in 2020 to 2024 will be $288,000. As a result, the price of Litecoin peaked around 22nd June 2019, at a value of $146. Immediately after that, Litecoin underwent a 6-month correction that saw the value of LTC drop to $35 before a relief rally early this year to a value of $84 around mid-February.Bitcoin this month, has a death cross on the daily chart. Further using the Litecoin model before the LTC halving, we can conclude that BTC experienced its own local top before halving around $10.5K in mid-February 2020.If we follow the Litecoin pattern from 2019, bitcoin might experience a 6-month bearish environment until mid-August. Further using the LTC top of $146 and bottom of $35 in December 2019 to create a bearish predictive ratio (146/35), estimate that bitcoin should find a bottom around the $2.5K area using the top of $10.5K. My Perspective on the 3rd Halving…50% - Likely Scenario 1Pump into the halving from now into May 12-16 we get back to $12K - $13K bitcoin. We then dump and fall back down to the $7.8K - $9.2K range as miners adjust to price post halving. Expect a huge surge in demand for bitcoin & ethereum over the next few weeks as Bitcoin's inflation slows down with the block halving going down to 6. This plays a far bigger impact this time around then previous halvings. We are in one of the most important halvings for Bitcoin.Governments continue to inflate currencies to mitigate the economic impact of the global Covid-19 pandemic. As a greater amount of fiat money chases a limited amount of goods and services, a significant increase in inflation is inevitable, which will cause prudent investors to turn to bitcoin as a safe haven to preserve their purchasing power.This idea that bitcoin will pump and alts won't keep up for a while and then BOOM alts have their run as bitcoin starts a larger consolidation.On both prior halving occasions, bitcoin surged to a new all-time high within 12 months..keep that in mind. From a fundamental standpoint, it will take time to see the actual ‘real' effects in the bitcoin & crypto markets.Post 2020 Halving…Libra LaunchBakkt Phase 2 Roll-outEthereum 2.0 LaunchCBDC's release to the publicChina Digital Yuan Release50% - Likely Scenario 2Dump before the halving from May 1st-5th back to $6.5K We then go into the halving peaking at $9.4K after the dump and fall back down to the $5.8K - $7.2K range as miners adjust to price post halving. As you see from the start until the first peak Bitcoin took roughly 330 days (or 47 bars on the 1W time-frame) to get there. The 2nd Cycle duration from the Bottom to Top was roughly 740 days (106 bars), more or less two times the first Cycle.The 3rd Cycle was 1065 days (152 bars) which is roughly the 2nd Cycle duration (740 days) + the 1st (330 days).Based on that (rough) progression, we can assume that the current Cycle will be the 3rd Cycle duration + the 1st: 1065 days + 330 days = 1395 (roughly 1400).Next is to apply the Fibonacci Channel on the time-scale. In doing so the full cycle duration (i.e. from the previous Top until the new Top as projected by the calculations above).We clearly see that bitcoin is right before the 0.382 Time Fib. During the previous 2 Cycles, when the price was about to enter this Fibonacci level, a pull back to the nearest Price Fib took place. In January 2016, the price was around the 0.5 Price Fib so it pulled back to the nearest 0.382. In August 2012 (which was a match shorter Cycle, keep that in mind) the price was around the 0.618 Price Fib so it pulled back to the nearest 0.5.Right now the price is near the 0.5 Price Fib as it was during the previous Cycle. It makes a whole lot of sense (that since it is close to entering the 0.382 Time Fib) to pull back to the closest Price Fib = 0.382 which is roughly $6.5K.

Welcome to Finance and Fury, the Furious Friday edition Been talking about monetary system – today dive into Crypto currency Crypto currency – means nothing - has to do with individual coins/tokens/whatever –   Preface – Don’t have as deep an understanding on the overall crypto market as I do on the fiat money system, and especially blockchain   I do know enough about BTC to know one thing – I wouldn’t buy BTC personally – You may love it – good If I get something technical incorrect – let me know – But ill be talking from fundamental POV – helps to explain where I come from –   We all know the story – In 2008 - Bitcoin was proposed by unknown author/s - pseudonym of Satoshi Nakamoto At the heart of blockchain is the distributed ledger. In its simplest terms, a distributed network is a shared database. Rather than one central entity holding the information, it’s spread through a network of millions of sites or nodes. This decentralization offers many benefits over traditional, centralized systems: increased security and transparency, for starters. use of a trustless, fungible and tamper resistant distributed ledger called a blockchain Ironic it is called a decentralised currency, when you need power and the internet to access Since Bitcoin's inception, thousands of other cryptocurrencies have been introduced – no limit or requirement to join   cryptography allowed the currency to have: Reading summary here - Trustless system allows you to trust in the system without needing to trust in the parties with which you’re transacting. Computers verify each transaction with sophisticated algorithms to confirm the transfer of value and create a historical ledger of all activity. The computers that form the network that are processing the transactions are located throughout the world and importantly are not owned or controlled by any single entity. The process is real-time, and much more secure than relying on a central authority to verify a transaction.   In a shared ledger system, every transaction is recorded and verified in a transparent manner, and the system creates the trust by default – doesn’t show who is behind the ledger though Trustless technology — meaning you don’t have to know, like, or trust the person or entity you’re doing business with — Trust in the system versus not needing to trust – but this only refers to trust in transactions going through Fungibility fungibility is the property of a good or a commodity whose individual units are essentially interchangeable, and each of its parts is indistinguishable from another part – same as AUD tamper resistant – tamper how? Unregulated – does this mean tamper with prices? Or just tamper with transactions? Been hacking cases -  hackers steak API keys and get into wallets Or just destruction of blocks or theft – simplification - done on mining through forcing incorrect verification codes – change a c for a d in the chain – block is lost – range of 17%-23% lost for good of BTC   Going deeper is bitcoin an option? what do you value BTC in? Unregulated leads to fraud and manipulation – or regulation being introduced Future regulations are a worry – for the most part left alone – easy to regulate – Requires internet – Aus providers easily block IPs – what if access through internet is blocked – can’t verify without internet connection May have a base value purely due to the areas it is most useful for – tax evasion, laundering, terrorism, illegal stuff – North Korea blocked in cash transfers, but could trade in crypto - utility token until use taken the supply of it also being snapped up by Governments – China, seized all of the citizens BTC, while on the surface against it, they likely have the largest control over the mining and ownership of BTC – come back to this in a sec Have been money seizures in the past 100 years – gold by FDR – made it illegal to own more than allowed Forced buyback at $20.5USD ounce, then went on buying spree and eventually pushed price to $35 by Nixon - Doesn’t escape concentrations in control/supply – cheapest power or deepest pockets – China has both June 2018, over 80% of Bitcoin mining is performed by six mining pools - five of those six pools are managed by individuals or organizations located in China. Terms of currency conversion – as long as there is dollars – another form of digital monetary expansion Most money in existence is in 1s and 0s – fracking banking reserve in modern economy Crypto - Allows for more money to be traded away into 1s and 0s Don’t have a good feeling about it – further into the rabbit hole - Removal of value further from a dollar – at least you can hold it in your hand if the system is crashing Think about it – how decentralised is it when you need power and the internet to access it? And when it has an infinite supply – if there is no confidence that the unit will retain value over longer term – not adopted as monetary system – How would the global economy operate if as a country you could just create a new Crypto currency and bail on your existing one No country would trade or trust you to repay your debts/not just bail on a currency once it runs out of supply If fully adopted it would be a hybrid system of what is currently known – Still by governments/central banks – Back to being centralised – but now what would back this? A Bitcoin special. 23 year old Martin Kuvandzhiev is a developer for the new Bitcoin Gold hard fork coin. We talk about the current drama including a huge DDOS attack that brought the https://btcgpu.org/ site down. Bitcoin Gold is currently trading futures at $145 (0.025 of 1 Bitcoin). This is a pre mine coin (,0.5% of total supply)but there's now replay protection, implemented since our recording. There's a bounty reward programme too. We also explore how a censorship resistant, decentralised, trustless store of value can help eliminate corruption when it comes to government expenditure. Bitcoin Gold uses the Equihash PoW algorithm, which cannot be solved using ASICs that have been designed for Bitcoin. This ensures that Bitcoin Gold is not in competition with Bitcoin over limited resources. Instead, Bitcoin Gold will have an entirely different mining infrastructure, consisting of general purpose computer hardware (GPUs). Bitcoin Gold is an interesting idea to improve the decentralisation of mining. If this concept is successful we may see this one day implemented in Bitcoin core.
