Women and minorities are being uplifted in the new podcast collaboration between WeSTEM and ARA City Radio. Originally founded in 2022 as Girls in Tech Luxembourg, the organization rebranded as Women Excel in Stem (WeSTEM) after the closure of the global Girls in Tech network. This rebranding allowed them to broaden their mission to include not just technology, but also science, engineering, and mathematics — all fields where women and minorities remain vastly underrepresented. Patricia and Vasiliki dive into WeSTEM's wide range of initiatives designed to make STEM careers more accessible and equitable. These include mentorship programs for women looking to advance their careers, technical workshops, and an exciting new robotics course for young people from underrepresented groups. The organization's goal is to help participants, whether they're children, career changers, or seasoned professionals, overcome barriers and build confidence in STEM fields. Patricia and Vasiliki also touched on the challenges women face, including deep-seated biases, imposter syndrome, and the lack of women in leadership roles. WeSTEM is tackling these issues head-on by offering mentorship, leadership development, and opportunities to break through those barriers. They also teased the upcoming launch of a 12-episode podcast series where women in STEM will share their stories, struggles, and triumphs — offering inspiration and practical advice for others looking to follow in their footsteps. The first episode is set to air on the 7th January, giving listeners an inside look at how women navigate and thrive in traditionally male-dominated fields.
Episode 83: Goodnight, Mary Magdalene first aired in June 2020 and features three poems by Vasiliki Katsarou, a poet and publisher. This time last year, Vasiliki published a new short collection of poetry Three Sea Stones with Solitude Hill Press. It's a great time to revisit Vasiliki's work. Dear Slushies, join the PBQ crew (which includes a freshly-tenured Jason Schneiderman) for a pre-pandemic recording of our discussion of 3 poems by the wonderful Vasiliki Katsarou's work. Be sure to read the poems on the page below as you listen. They'll require your eyes and ears– and “a decoder ring.” The team has a grand old time explicating these artful poems. The muses are sprung and singing in us as we read and decide on this submission. Katsarou's poems teach us to read them without projecting too much of ourselves and our current preoccupations onto them. We're reminded to pay attention to what's happening on the page. But synchronicities abound! Before we know it we're ricocheting off of the poems' images and noting the wonderful convergences the poems trigger – we hear traces of Wallace Stevens “Idea of Order of Key West” or Auden's Musee de Beaux Arts. (But first we check in with each other, cracking each other up in a pre-pandemic moment of serious lightness. We're heard that “Science” shows Arts & Humanities majors make major money in the long run. Kathy reports that “the data on success” shows that participation in Nativity Plays is a marker for career success. Samantha confesses she played Mary Magdalene in a Nativity Play. Marion might have been a Magi. And many of us were reindeer.. Also, Donkeys do better than sheep over time (which may or may not have been claimed on “Wait, wait… don't tell me!”). Editing a Lit Mag shouldn't be this much fun, Slushies. Listen through to the discussion of the 3rd poem's deep magic and craft. And listen to our editors' cats chime in). Addison Davis, Jason Schneiderman, Samantha Neugebauer, Kathleen Volk Miller, Marion Wrenn, and Joe Zang Vasiliki Katsarou grew up Greek American in Jack Kerouac's hometown of Lowell, Massachusetts. She has also lived in Paris, France, and Harvard, Mass. She is the author of a full-length poetry collection, Memento Tsunami, and co-editor of two contemporary poetry anthologies: Eating Her Wedding Dress: A Collection of Clothing Poems and Dark as a Hazel Eye: Coffee & Chocolate Poems. She holds an MFA from Boston University and an AB in comparative literature from Harvard University. She read her poetry at the 2014 Geraldine R. Dodge Poetry Festival, and is a Teaching Artist at Hunterdon Art Museum in Clinton, New Jersey. Her poems have been published widely and internationally, including in NOON: Journal of the Short Poem (Japan), Corbel Stone Press' Contemporary Poetry Series (U.K.), Regime Journal (Australia), as well as in Poetry Daily, Tiferet: A Journal of Spiritual Literature, Wild River Review, wicked alice, Literary Mama, La Vague Journal, Otoliths, and Contemporary American Voices. She wrote and directed an award-winning 35mm short film, Fruitlands 1843, about a Transcendentalist utopian community in Massachusetts. To feel like home or like a foreigner Hej hej! -------------------- For English, scroll down! -------------------- Gillar du den här typen av lite svårare avsnitt? Vill du lära dig hur man förstår "vanlig" svenska? -------------------- Do you enjoy this a bit more difficult kind of episodes? Do you want to learn to understand "regular" Swedish? Do you want to reach an advanced level so that you can use native material? Books, series, podcasts, etc. Then the Strong Swedish course is for you! Click here to read more!

Neural Implant podcast - the people behind Brain-Machine Interface revolutions
Vailiki Giagka is an Assistant Professor at TU Delft and Research Group Leader at Fraunhofer IZM in Berlin where she conducts research on the design and fabrication of active neural interfaces. ***This podcast is sponsored by Ripple Neuro, check out their Neuroscience Research Tools here*** Top 3 Takeaways: "Water vapor is not dangerous for neural devices, it will not cause your metals to corrode, as long as it remains in the form of vapor. The moment it condenses into liquid water and you have ions in there, is when corrosion can start, and that is the beginning of the end" Conformal polymer coatings have been implanted in bodies for decades but we lack means to prove upfront the amount of time a certain coated device would last in the body "Our aim is not to create startup ourselves, but it is really to help this ecosystem by supporting companies working on this" 0:30 "How do you work in Berlin and the Hague in the Netherlands at the same time? 2:30 "Why especially neural device packaging?" 5:15 "What's the size of your guys' device or packing?" 7:15 "Do you want to, do you wanna describe the neural implant network mesh a little bit more and how does it work and why is it necessary?" 9:15 Sponsorship by Ripple Neuro 9:45 "So let's talk about maybe conformal coatings. What is it, how does it work? Why is it necessary?" 19:00 "So what are some rough numbers, is one method better than the other, and then how many years of simulated life can one survive versus the other?" 21:45 "So how do we test it? How do we do the accelerated testing to be able to simulate a human lifespan?" 25:00 "So now you also work on the wireless power delivery, wireless transmission. How is this, how does this work? Why is this important?" 31:00 "Neurons fire with electrical signals and you're using ultrasound. So how does that work? Why is it able to work?" 32:00 "How does the power usage compare with electrical or ultrasound cuffs?" 33:30 "Let's talk about your graphene work." 37:30 "These three areas that you're working on, these all seem like very good candidates for, a spinoff company or some kind of, patents. Have you thought about this?" 42:00 "If you had unlimited funding, what would you do?" 43:45 "Is there anything that we didn't talk about that you wanted to mention?"

„Und? Was machst Du beruflich?“ Wenn man die Antwort auf diese Frage als kleine Herausforderung empfindet, dann scheint dahinter eine größere Geschichte zu schlummern. If you're considering opening a vegetarian or vegan restaurant, you'll be riding a much larger wave than a ripple. The number of people moving to a plant-based diet worldwide is steadily increasing, and they're making different choices at the grocery store and in their dining habits. But veganism has evolved as more than just a hot food trend – it is now a worldwide movement. In this podcast, our guest James McInnes, the Founder and CEO of Globally Local, will go over some of the most critical details to consider before starting a plant-based restaurant or café, as well as some innovative ways to connect with other plant-based food entrepreneurs. James founded Globally Local in 2014 as a grassroots vegan company that delivered organic vegetables and fruits from local farms to consumers' doorsteps. In 2015, after partnering with future wife Vasiliki – the couple started to create vegan meal kits, through which they discovered that people enjoyed their vegan fast food recipes. In 2016, Globally Local brought what is now known as the Famous Burger to the London, Ontario Ribfest, where it quickly sold out due to high demand. The success of this vegan option caught the attention, and the resulting chaos drew widespread media coverage across North America. Soon after, the food truck was introduced, bringing vegan fast food to neighbourhoods and vegfests across Ontario, where customers flocked in droves. The couple opened Canada's first vegan fast-food restaurant in 2017. They opened the world's first 24-hour vegan drive-through six months later. In 2018, the company scaled quickly by opening a food manufacturing facility, where it produced its own proteins and dairy alternatives, allowing for price parity with conventional fast food. After becoming the first vegan fast-food chain publicly listed in April 2021, they have recently announced plans to open five new Ontario restaurant locations this Summer. Globaly local is currently being traded on Toronto’s TSX Venture Exchange, a stock exchange for emerging companies. In our conversation, James takes us through the extreme challenges they have faced in the last year, preparing the company to go public during the pandemic. The coronavirus pandemic has created more uncertainty for brick-and-mortar locations, but it's an opportunity for companies to ramp up the expertise and service stores were known for digitally. "That is not going away," Unilever Prestige Group CEO and EVP Vasiliki Petrou said in regard to virtual consultations and other digital innovations. "It just will grow stronger. Being future fit is definitely taking that muscle to the next stage," she said on the Glossy Beauty Podcast of the group's brands such as Tatcha and Murad. And while that aspect of a brand's presence demands evolution, Petrou thinks that conversely, consumers these days are especially attracted to hero products from the brands they know and love. "In crisis people tend to go back to the bigger, credible, iconic products versus, let's say, the more 'discovery' ones," Petrou said. "Consumers want to go to a safe haven." Petrou wouldn't confirm or deny rumors that Unilever Prestige was in talks to acquire British makeup brand Charlotte Tilbury, only teasing that "some [rumors] are true, some are not." But she did explain the company's overall approach to M&A. "We're always about founder-led brands. We're always looking at new business models, new approaches, whether there's a big idea that's globally relevant, and definitely looking at all categories," Petrou said.

This is the second interview with Vasiliki, the one can be heard by clicking here. Vasiliki Antonopoulou was born in Greece and raised in Saudi Arabia, two locations which re-emerge in her process. Her practice combines text, performance and moving image, to explore notions of displacement and otherness. These manifest in metaphors that create multiple layers delving into the emotional relationships that exists in particular spaces and architecture. Using a sculptural language, her work queers the process of image editing by challenging the binary format of rough versus sleek moving image. Her outcomes, are visual poems that occupy a space in between where displaced images reflect the notions she works with. ‘Dry’, Film Still, ongoing ‘Dry’, Film Still, ongoing

There are numerous human-caused sources of air pollution. Dr. Vasiliki Assimakopoulou gives us an overview of the most important of them along with factors affecting outdoor pollution in big cities and how these manifest and affect indoor pollution. We discuss her current research activities which, between others, include the aggregation and analysis of pollution data and information from several official sources; on the field measurements and research; and providing recommendations on how to reduce pollution and improve the quality of life in cities. The Emission Inventory of Athens is one of the most important and notable recent deliverable of the research group. In the last part of the interview, we talk about the disconnect between state, decision makers and researchers which is impeding the translation of research results and recommendations into regulations. Interviewed by George Voulgaris for Tech Talks Central.
The complex palatial society of the island of Crete in the Bronze Age still dazzles us today, but what happened to this society after the palaces fell and before the rise of the Greek city-state (1200-700 BCE)? What was life like in this transitional period? In the eastern part of the island, people fled up into almost inaccessible mountain sites and maintained little contact with the rest of the Aegean, at least in the later part of the period. The lecture will bring together evidence from a variety of recent excavations at Halasmenos, Vasiliki, Knossos, Thronos/Sybrita, and Chania, but will focus on two major sites in eastern Crete: Karphi and Kavousi. The British excavations at Karphi in the 1930's brought to light a large town of this period, and recent study by the author and a new group of British and European scholars are making clearer the nature of that settlement. Excavations at Kavousi have produced three settlements and cemeteries that span the entire period: Vronda, Kastro, and Azoria. Examination of the material from these two sites tells us much about the social structure, political organization, religious beliefs, technology, and burial customs of the people and suggests that while there are differences among the communities, there is also a great deal of homogeneity.
