Hello, and welcome to episode 111 of the Financial Crime Weekly Podcast, I'm Chris Kirkbride. This week has been, relative to the last few weeks, a quiet week for financial crime news. That is always welcome for a host of reasons. The sanctions news has the usual updates on further action against Russia from the EU and US, but new of an update in relation to sanctions against the International Criminal Court by the US House of Representatives. On bribery news, a former US Admiral has been charged with bribery, as well as some indications from research in the UK suggesting that business may be lost if a bribe is not paid. The money laundering news brings more from Turkey on its moves to come off the FATF's ‘Grey List', and a story from the UK about an end to the criminal investigation into Monzo Bank. There is also some market abuse news from the US, and the usual round-up of cyber-attack news. As usual, I have linked the main stories flagged in the podcast in the description. These are: Association of Chartered Accountants, Bribery and corruption – The hidden social evil on your doorstep.Council of the European Union, DPRK: EU sanctions nine additional individuals and entities involved in the country's activities related to illegal weapons programmes and supporting Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine.Delegation of the European Union to the Russian Federation, Sanctions: Joint Statement on DPRK-Russia.Interpol, INTERPOL action leads to anti-corruption operation in Moldova.Monzo Bank, Annual Report 2024.National Crime Agency, NCA uncovers corrupt officials who helped wanted criminals to circumvent international Red Notice system.Office of Foreign Assets Control, Iran-related Designations; Non-Proliferation Designations.Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, Kosovo's judiciary to treat organized crime and corruption cases more vigorously, OSCE Mission report says.Securities and Exchange Commission, SEC Obtains Final Judgment Against Former Arista Networks Chairman Andy Bechtolsheim for Insider Trading.Securities and Exchange Commission, SEC Charges Former Lumentum Executive with Insider Trading.Spotlight on Corruption, Letter from the National Crime Agency highlights problems with the UK's political finance enforcement regime.Spotlight on Corruption, National Crime Agency Letter to Spotlight on Corruption.US Department of Justice, Retired Navy Admiral and Business Executives Arrested for Bribery Scheme.US Department of Justice, Pharmacy Owner Sentenced for Paying Illegal Kickbacks and Engaging in a Money Laundering Conspiracy.

The Data Strategy Show has been voted in the top 10 data podcasts by onlydatajobs and voted in the top 40 strategy podcasts by Feedspot in 2022. So, I wanted to say a HUGE BIG thank you to all the listeners out there for your support and I'm hugely excited about where the show will go in the future. On today's episode I'm delighted to have Karen Jean-Francois! I was bowled over when I heard that Karen started out as an athlete and so I decided to look her up! Amazing! She ran for Harrow and France! In 15/16 she was pretty much in position 1 for many competitions in the heptathlon! She's super focused and I loved her passion, positive energy and found her incredibly inspirational! So moving on from athletics she branched into data analyst/data scientist. She is currently Analytics Manager – Operations at Monzo Bank. She often talks about her fears and how she had to face head-on into impostor syndrome early on in her career as she was labeled too shy to succeed in a client-facing role, and she struggled to find her space and voice. But she is relentless in pursuit of self-help and says she's a little bit of a self-help addict. By Overcoming these challenges she is now helping analysts in their development, improving their performance, and retelling her story so that they can be hugely effective in their roles. She's also a fellow podcaster and is the host of the Women in Data podcast. As well as this you can find her on thethrivinganalyst.com where she helps data analytics professionals ace their careers. I hope you enjoy this episode please do like, share, and comment, and enjoy listening to Karen. Behind every data leader there is a person and here is Karen unplugged.

It became the darling of crowdfunding when it raised a record-breaking £1 million in just 96 seconds. We chat to Richard about the early days of Monzo, why did it become a cult brand amongst North London tech types and how does he get people engaged in conversations about finance? Today we have one of the pioneers of the European tech ecosystem on to discuss how the European early-stage VC landscape has changed since its early days – and how their fund, Passion Capital, has unlocked access to investors with their latest fundraise.Eileen Burbidge, a Founding Partner of Passion Capital, and I had a fascinating conversation about all things VC, opening up access to the asset class to individual investors, what it means for the future of venture capital, and Eileen's love of Arsenal and why she's not a fan of the European Super League.Eileen has built a reputation as the go-to VC for seed stage companies in the UK and Europe – and for good reason. Her aptly named fund, Passion Capital, has built a name for itself as one of the top early-stage funds in the UK because of her passion for rolling up her sleeves, much like she did in her days as an operator at Skype, Apple, Yahoo!, and Sun Microsystems.I won't forget when we met last year at her office – she had just stepped out of non-stop meetings with one of her growth-stage companies, where she was helping them figure out team and talent questions. Not every seed stage VC has the ability to stay involved as their companies grow nor does this type of work, but that's what separates Passion from the pack.Eileen is just as much at home in her office, which doubles as a co-working space for Passion portfolio companies, as she is in 10 Downing Street, where she has been named the UK Treasury's Special Envoy for FinTech, has been appointed by the Chancellor as the Chair of Tech Nation, and was awarded an MBE in the 2015 Queen's Birthday Honors for her services to businesses. So maybe it's no surprise why she's been described as “The Queen of British VCs” by Fortune Magazine. She's certainly backed many of the British startup royalty at early-stage, being a Seed investor in Monzo Bank, where she still serves on the board, Tide Bank, GoCardless, Digital Shadows, Marshmallow, Butternut Box, and a number of others.Eileen has also had an illustrious career as an operator, working for Apple, Yahoo, and Sun Microsystems in the early days of the internet before moving to London in 2004 to become one of Skype's earliest employees and Head of Product. She then founded Passion in 2011 as one of the first Seed funds in London, serving a critical market need for the entrepreneurial ecosystem in London. She's now trailblazing once again by being one of the first funds to open up their LP base to the crowd, where they have partnered with Seedrs to allow individuals to invest into Passion's latest fund. She's also an independent non-executive board director at Dixons Carphone, a 10B pound revenue electrical and telecoms retailer and on the Transformation & Innovation Advisory Board at UniCredit. Thanks Eileen for being a pioneer in the European VC ecosystem and bringing innovative structures in venture capital to LPs.I hope you enjoy.

Coffee Sessions #20 with Neal Lathia of Monzo Bank, talking about Monzo Bank - An MLOps Case Study //Bio Neal is currently the Machine Learning Lead at Monzo in London, where his team focuses on building machine learning systems that optimise the app and help the company scale. Neal's work has always focused on applications that use machine learning - this has taken him from recommender systems to urban computing and travel information systems, digital health monitoring, smartphone sensors, and banking. //Talk Takeaways Monzo Bank has a small, but a very impactful team continuously learning new things. Optimistically do their utmost to avoid “throwing problems over the wall,” and so they build systems, iterate on machine learning models, and collaborate very closely with each other and with many folks across the business. Hopefully, all of that paints a picture of a team that aims to bring real and valuable machine learning systems to life. Monzo does not spend time trying to advance the state-of-the-art in machine learning or tweak models to absolute perfection. //Other links you can check Neal on Personal Website: http://nlathia.github.io/ Research: http://nlathia.github.io/research/ Press & Speaking: http://nlathia.github.io/public/ http://nlathia.github.io/2020/06/Customer-service-machine-learning.html http://nlathia.github.io/2020/10/ML-and-rule-engines.html http://nlathia.github.io/2020/10/Monzo-ML.html http://nlathia.github.io/2019/09/Large-NLP-in-prod.html http://nlathia.github.io/2020/07/Shadow-mode-deployments.html https://github.com/operatorai --------------- ✌️Connect With Us ✌️ ------------- Join our slack community: https://go.mlops.community/slack Follow us on Twitter: @mlopscommunity Sign up for the next meetup: https://go.mlops.community/register Connect with Demetrios on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/dpbrinkm/ Connect with David on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/aponteanalytics/ Connect with Neal on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/nlathia/ Timestamps: [00:00] Intro to Neal Lathia [02:48] Background of Monzo Bank [05:06] Problems you're solving with Machine Learning at Monzo? TS Anil, the CEO of Monzo, talks to us about how Monzo designs their customer experience. A digital bank by design, they always start with their desired end state in mind. With a single-minded focus on making money work for everyone (their customers), they optimize their processes and product around their mission. As a veteran banker, he uses his experience to share how legacy systems and thinking can hinder a company’s efforts at advancing their use of data and AI. On the topic of talent, he describes his experience with working with millennials as "working with learners, not the learned".
