On this New Year's Eve episode, Hanako and Lorrie get caught up and just shoot the breeze for a few minutes to ring in the New Year. They talk about Lorrie's reaction to the final two episodes of Hawkeye, and discuss a little bit about how the pandemic has tried their patience (Hanako is currently on Covid-watch while waiting for test results after a possible exposure). Also discussed is the anticipation for the final season of A Discovery of Witches (which is due to premiere January 7), and the lack of (or lack of their knowledge of) POC-based groups and fans of fantasy-based shows/books that are usually discussed on the show, such as ADOW, Cursed, Shadow & Bone, etc. The episode cuts as 2022 rings in on the East Coast. Happy New Year! Mentioned in this episode: @allsoulssisterz , @DCblackgeeks *All Souls Sisterz, two Black women who love & support the All Souls Trilogy books by Deborah Harkness, the basis of the show A Discovery of Witches (which is covered on this podcast. * Black Geeks of Dragon Con, a group of Black and other POC geeks that meet up at the annual Dragon Con convention to share their love of all things geek. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/fandomhybridpodcast/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/fandomhybridpodcast/support

TBOL ch 2A restless Matthew Clairmont makes the rounds and pays a few castle calls to the current residents of Sept-Tours. He's on edge, and his friends and family -- rightly -- welcome him back with wary caution. In the end, it takes Diana to bring him to his center (as he does for her). BUT, there's one family member who wonders out loud (to say the least) why Diana Bishop is harboring the blood song of his long-dead father, Philippe de Clermont. Like Matthew, the Daemons are also restless souls in this pandemic, so they take the opportunity to talk A LOT, thus, the lengthy episode! Take it in shifts, or binge it at once! No judgement! SON ch 38"Parting is such sweet sorrow." Scratch that! Goodbyes flat-out suck! And that's what Diana has to deal with in this chapter; saying goodbye to her father -- although technically, not really -- but we get it. The fact that these two will never meet each other again (or WILL they?!) is not lost on us. At least there was a date night with Matthew to sweeten things up (sigh). In the end, Diana's OK, and we survive. Our All Souls lives are much sweeter having met Stephen Proctor - Dorky Dad, observant guest, wise man, kind and forgiving father. SON ch 29After some gentle persuasion (ha!), Edward Kelley points Diana and Matthew to Rabbi Loew in order to find the lost book (presently known as Ashmole 782). The Rabbi can offer no assistance, however he can escort Diana to the Jewish town to meet Abraham, maker of spells, and mother of the Golem. Diana exchanges methods with Abraham, gains some insight, allows her familiar to have a play date, and a inadvertently has a chance encounter with a future er..."problem"? Matthew, getting drowned by the chaos that their lives have become, has had enough! Newlywed drama! We talked the heck out of this one! Despite repeated attempts to have a proper sit-down with Edward Kelley, Diana is not having a lot of luck; what she is managing to do is to get more and more tangled up in Emperor Rudolf's world and imagination. Finally, through a tangled network of connections via the "Real Housewives of Prague," Diana and Matthew meet the man of the hour. In chapter 26, we meet a new (to us) de Clermont; Verin ... and her husband Ernst. We reunite with present-day Gallowglass, and we see how Philippe continues to look over the family from the grave. We then zip back in time to 1591 in chapter 27 to catch up with Matthew and Diana in Prague. They are establishing their household, settling the kids in, and plotting their course to finally get their hands on Ashmole 782. First stop, Emperor Rudolf's place. ADOW S1E6Matthew needs to find Diana ... and so does Baldwin. Their motivations clash in a vampiric display of will. Meanwhile, somewhere in a crumbling castle, Diana has to stave off a determined ('sadistic' is more accurate) witch from getting her secrets. Gerbert is skulking about hoping to get his own time with Diana, and this brings us to alarm because we know what he does to witches (Meridiana, anyone?)! Join us as we watch these events unravel! Also? Hello Sigasmund. From this episode on, you are no longer nameless. We shall call you "Siggie," OK?!EPISODE 6From the press release:Satu brutally tortures Diana in Gerbert’s isolated castle ruins. Matthew, now sworn to hunt down and kill anyone who tries to harm Diana, attempts a daring airborne rescue mission with Baldwin in tow, but they are too late to prevent Satu invoking dark magic in a bid to open up Diana and see the magic inside her. As Diana is forced to confront the idea that she might have been spellbound, she wonders what kind of monster she is. When Sophie confesses that she is a daemon born of witches, this news of cross-species offspring leaves Agatha reeling as she ponders the implications for all their lives.See full show notes: go.DaemonsDiscuss.com/S1E6Join us on Patreon (as little as $2 monthly will gain you access to extra episodes + different level incentives for those who join at higher tiers!)A Discovery of Witches TV News info (Continually updated; scenes, sets, trailer video, official photographs, casting + more)All Souls Universe Book News for 2018 (Continually updated: The World of All Souls and Time's Convert - formally known as "The Marcus Book" - news; cover reveals, release dates, descriptions, tour info + more)Become a Discusser (contact info located there as well), or for US listeners: text ADOW to 444999Email us directly: DaemonsDiscuss@gmail.comCall & Leave a voicemail! 1 (360) 519-7836 or hit us up on SpeakPipe Our Podcast Page: DaemonsDiscuss.com Our Main Site: DaemonsDomain.com Join our Facebook Group: Daemonic Discussers (the word is "F***ing Firedrake" - be sure to answer the second question as well. Knox calls an emergency meeting of the Congregation to denounce Matthew for abducting a witch but Matthew’s ferocious older brother Baldwin plays a careful game to maintain control
in the face of Gerbert foretelling the end of the de Clermonts – and throws Diana to the lions. Diana isn’t the only witch facing persecution. Satu pays a shocking price for her curiosity when Knox discovers she has been searching through the Witches’ Archive and learned his guilty secret. Welcome to All Souls Witchy Women Episode 8: The A Word, our episode about our hopes and dreams for the TV adaptation of Deborah Harkness' A Discovery of Witches. With the TV adaptation of A Discovery of Witches about to become available on Sundance Now and Shudder for U.S. and Canadian fans (and fans-to-be), we decided we needed to go a step beyond our blog post about the eight scenes we hope to see adapted from the book and talk more fully about our hopes for the show. Among the things we discuss is how we hope the characters develop, Matthew and Diana to Sarah and Emily and Ysabeau. We also talk about the scenery — the Bishop house!! — and, of course the magic and our favorite quotes we hope get cut and pasted into the script. W Did we mention the giveaway? Here's how to win!To celebrate this momentous occasion, we're doing an international giveaway too. We'll be giving away a signed copy of Deb Harkness' The World of All Souls AND a signed copy of her newest book, Time’s Convert. To enter, all you have to do is leave a comment below on what scene you’re hoping to see (if you haven’t seen the show yet) OR if you’ve seen the show (which is okay, we forgive you), you can leave a comment about one of the favorite scenes you’ve already seen. The contest is now closed. We have notified our winner. We, of course, still hope you listen to this podcast. :) And stay tuned for more giveaways in the future! And now, on to the show! Housekeeping details: We’ve read the whole All Souls Trilogy and will try to stay on topic if we say a particular show is going to only cover A Discovery of Witches, but we may forget or digress or whatever so consider yourself warned if you’ve only read one of the books. For the record, this particular podcast seems to be fairly safe for those who’ve only read ADOW and haven’t seen the TV version yet from Bad Wolf TV in Wales . Also this podcast is labeled explicit because we sometimes swear and we’re going to talk about sex because, well, there’s sex in the books. So that’s why we gave it the explicit rating. You’ve now been officially warned Show notes: Each episode we bring you a note about wine because red wine is a main form of sustenance for vampires when they’re not drinking, you know. blood. Oh, and we like wine…a lot. Usually our weekly wine notes come to us compliments of our resident sommelier, Bayard, who knows what he’s talking about because he’s a founding partner at Crafted Brands. This week Bayard discusses sparkling wine, because what better drink for a celebration? (And we already did, champagne.) Don’t know the difference between brut, dry, and sec. Not to worry — you’ll know more after you listen to Bayard. Trust us. The text version of the wine note can be found here.

As fate would have it, Angela was unable to record that day, so Laura graciously agreed to join us as our third. This episode can only be described as fans being fanatics! We cover the Cardiff premiere of A Discovery of Witches, what Laura can reveal about All Souls Con. SON ch 22This chapter is so jam-packed with different storylines, that we had no clue what to name it! There's the Rede, and Diana's new little gathering of witches that will help her with her magic. There's Jack Blackfriers, and everything that goes with taking him on as an additional household member. There's Father Hubbard; he's come a-callin' and Diana and Matthew remain quite wary of him. There's some science, between Gregor Mendel and Mary Sidney, we wind up like the kids with blank stares on their faces mentioned in this chapter! There's also a huge loss. OH! And there is real-life breaking news in the middle of the episode! Please enjoy -- prepare to take it in shifts. Welcome to All Souls Witchy Women Episode 7: The T Word, our Time’s Convert review. We discuss what we loved, our favorite quotes, and what made us go hmmmm. We veered a bit off course from our usual podcast thematic format to do a review of Deborah Harkness’ new bestseller, Time’s Convert. The short version is WE LOVED THIS BOOK! But that would be a rather short podcast wouldn’t it? So here’s breakdown of what we discuss: our favorite quotes, what we liked about the three interwoven storylines (with some delicious background information from Deb’s book tour stop at the Georgia Center for the Book in Decatur, Georgia, which Ashley and Nikki were lucky enough to attend), and then we end the podcast with some bits from the book that made us go hmmmm. We hope you enjoy the podcast and would love to hear your comments too. What were your favorite parts of Time’s Convert? Housekeeping details: We’ve read the whole All Souls Trilogy and will try to stay on topic if we say a particular show is going to only cover A Discovery of Witches, but we may forget or digress or whatever so consider yourself warned if you’ve only read one of the books. For the record, this particular podcast seems to be fairly safe for those who’ve only read ADOW. This week Bayard discusses madeira because it was a drink popular during the American Revolution and is mentioned in Time’s Convert. Check out our Episode 7 Madeira wine note to learn more about this 18th century drink.

SON ch 20This is where it all began! We imagine the fandom is currently in the midst of reading Time's Convert (released on the 18th of September 2018). A good part of that story covers Marcus and Phoebe, and today we are returning to the foundation of that relationship. The place: Sotheby's. The time: 2010 (according to book canon). Marcus Whitmore entered Phoebe Taylor's life, and changed it forever! Since we didn't get to follow the whole journey on the way to Time's Convert, we are lucky enough to catch a glimpse of it in the very beginning. Join us as we see the third anomaly crop up into the present. Observe young Phoebe's introduction to the de Clermonts, and listen as we describe how this chapter changed our initial perception of Dr. Whitmore, full stop. #ForeverChangedSee full show notes: go.DaemonsDiscuss.com/44Join us on Patreon (as little as $2 monthly will gain you access to extra episodes + different level incentives for those who join at higher tiers!)A Discovery of Witches TV News info (Continually updated; scenes, sets, trailer video, official photographs, casting + more)All Souls Universe Book News for 2018 (Continually updated: The World of All Souls and Time's Convert - formally known as "The Marcus Book" - news; cover reveals, release dates, descriptions, tour info + more)Become a Discusser (contact info located there as well), or for US listeners: text ADOW to 444999Email us directly: DaemonsDiscuss@gmail.comCall & Leave a voicemail! Welcome to the All Souls Witchy Women Podcast Episode 6: The S Word, in which we discuss the power of scent. Scent plays a powerful role in our perception of the world around us. Scent transports us to different times and places. It stimulates our salivary glands and make our mouths water. Scent warns us that danger is near. None of this is surprising when you consider that smell is the most sensitive of our senses and the first to develop. Whether it’s Matthew’s cloves and cinnamon or Diana’s honeysuckle and more, scent abounds in the All Souls Trilogy. Join us as we break down this odiferous theme and the role it plays in the books we all love to talk about. Also this podcast is labeled explicit because we sometimes swear and we’re going to talk about sex because, well, there’s sex in the books. So that’s why we gave it the explicit rating. You’ve now been officially warned Show notes: Each episode we’ll be bringing you a note about wine because red wine is a main form of sustenance for vampires when they’re not drinking, you know. blood. Oh, and we like wine…a lot. Usually our weekly wine notes come to us compliments of our resident sommelier, Bayard, who knows what he’s talking about because he’s a founding partner at Crafted Brands. But this time around we are also excited to talk about a new book from Avery Books called Wine Folly: Master Guide. Check out our Episode 6 Wine Note: Smelling Wine.

SON ch 13-14Beginnings, endings -- change. Boy, do we get a dose of all three throughout these two chapters! We watch Diana Bishop and Matthew Clairmont take their first steps as an "official" husband and wife team. We spend some quality moments with Philippe de Clermont before we bid him farewell. Then we are launched to present-day Sept-Tours in the company of Sarah Bishop, Emily Mather and Ysabeau de Clermont by an anomaly -- Philippe's note to Ysabeau. It did the reader good, because it provided us some comfort by informing Ysabeau that he had just seen Matthew and Diana safely off. Further on, the same note helps Ysabeau begin to end her period of greiving. Ysabeau rounds up today's journey by serenading us as we proceed on to London, The Blackfriers in future chapters, yet we remain forever changed by this particular trip to Sept-Tours.See full show notes: go.DaemonsDiscuss.com/37Join us on Patreon (as little as $1 monthly will gain you access to extra episodes + different level incentives for those who join at higher tiers!)A Discovery of Witches TV News info (Continually updated; scenes, sets, trailer video, official photographs, casting + more)All Souls Universe Book News for 2018 (Continually updated: The World of All Souls and Time's Convert - formally known as "The Marcus Book" - news; cover reveals, release dates, descriptions, tour info + more)Buy tickets to All Souls Con 2018Become a Discusser (contact info located there as well), or for US listeners: text ADOW to 444999Email us directly: DaemonsDiscuss@gmail.comCall & Leave a voicemail! ADOW - ch. 30 -34Enter Baldwin Montclair! Valerie patiently indulges Angela and Jean (truthfully, she gleefully eggs them on -- that might explain the episode length!) while they spend time with their favorite de Clermont. This has been named 'The One With the Bite,' because of Baldwin's declaration to Matthew: "You bit me!" In this episode, we also head to America (Madison, NY), and meet Sarah Bishop and Emily Mather (and Tabitha. And the House). This is our last recording in the age of innocence! It was produced 'BEFORE CASTING" aka "BC". When we found out that casting choices for A Discovery of Witches TV would be revealed, we decided to go on and record this episode as planned to keep our regular schedule going. BUT, we did record a reaction! Make sure you check out our Special Edition episode for our reaction to the casting news on delivered on August 22nd, 2017 (hint - #MatthewSquared). Produced on the fly, so the audio is a bit dodgier than we'd like, but we figured it would be forgiven for this sort of thing! Listen/view show notes here: go.DaemonsDiscuss.com/SE04Welp! Mohammed Adow discussed his recent documentary, Not Yet Kenyan, which aired on Al Jazeera English Channel on 14 November, at a meeting of the Nairobi Forum. The documentary brings to the fore a divide in Kenyan society, revealing a history of discrimination since independence against ethnic Somalis in North Eastern Kenya. Born and raised in Garissa County in northeast Kenya, Mohammed Adow witnessed at first hand the political and economic marginalisation of this part of Kenya. For "Not Yet Kenyan" he went back to see how the region and its people had survived and started to prosper, only to find that Kenya's intervention in Somalia and the actions of al-Shabaab are threatening to throw the region into turmoil. During the meeting RVI fellow Justin Willis, Professor in History at the University of Durham, talked with Mohammed Adow about his experiences and the story behind this documentary. They discussed the issues with Dr Ekuru Aukot, a Constitutional Lawyer, who hails from Turkana in northwest Kenya.
