Don't Fall for the Buyer's Trap: Why No-Marketing Businesses Aren't Easy Wins In this episode of Jackquisitions, we dive into a common pitfall many first-time buyers fall for—the belief that a business with little or no marketing is a “goldmine” just waiting to be unlocked. Spoiler: it's not that simple. Using the tongue-in-cheek example of an underwater basket weaving business, we break down the real costs of building out a marketing engine from scratch.Jack unpacks the "buyer's trap": the dangerous assumption that adding marketing will instantly generate revenue. In reality, successful marketing requires time, capital, and deep strategic focus—and that investment often erodes the profit margins buyers were initially excited about. Instead of chasing fixer-uppers, Jack recommends targeting businesses with established marketing systems already in place. It's about buying stability, not a project.Whether you're just starting your acquisition journey or knee-deep in LOIs, this episode is a must-listen for anyone looking to grow through home service business acquisitions without overextending financially.

As the competition for volume in the 7(a) space heats up, broker fees are on the rise—sometimes dramatically so. But what does that mean for the industry, lenders, and ultimately, the borrowers? Join us as Ray brings in another panel of expert Art of SBA Contributors to dissect the impact of increasing broker referral fees and the ripple effects they have on SBA lending. Is higher compensation pushing brokers to steer deals toward banks that offer the highest payout rather than the best solution for the borrower? And are those costs being passed on to the small business owner in the form of higher interest rates? In this episode, we'll break down: The ethics and impact of rising broker compensation How higher referral fees could affect borrower pricing Why banks might be "buying" business rather than earning it A proposed solution to ensure transparency and competition in the industry Joining us are top SBA professionals: Charles Green, SVP at Harvest Kay Anderson, SVP at Live Oak Bank Javier Jorge, CEO of Chatbiz and SBA Director at Locality Bank Tune in for a candid conversation on what's driving broker compensation trends and what the future of SBA lending might look like if these practices continue. This question was sent by Alan. And he’s a member of the team who transcribes fingering and pedaling from the videos, and prepares nicely done fingering and pedaling practice scores. So Alan writes: Vidas and Ausra, I enjoyed this episode, thanks. You mention Sauer’s crescendo roller. We saw one of these demonstrated by Andreas Sieling when we toured the Berliner Dom last year. I didn’t quite understand this unique device ; perhaps you could explain exactly how it works in a future episode. Is it selectable to specific manuals? Does it change wind pressure or add/subtract from registrations? Thanks and regards, Alan Peterson

This is our Trek: The Movie episode, where we feature interviews with Alan Peterson the Director and Producer of this upcoming movie being released by Deseret Book and Excel Entertainment. We also have an interview with David Howard the screen writer and Austin Grant, the lead actor and Stefania Barr lead actress from the film. This is a great family film that is the latest from the constantly growing genre of mormon cinema. Some of you might ask, “What does Trek: The Movie have to do with missionary work?" Watch the movie and listen to the podcast and you will see. We have some great mission stories and we hope to show you how film projects like this have be a platform for re-activiation efforts, or to help minister to the youth—our future missionaries. Music for this episode comes from the soundtrack of Trek The Movie and our special guest Stefania Barr's band, Shrink the Giant. The whole soundtrack features local bands from Utah which is a really cool addition to this independent film. I was at the premier last night and had a great time watching the movie, meeting the cast and crew, as well as the people from Deseret Book and Excel Entertainment who are producing this film and sound track. Nick Galieti interviews Alan Peterson, the director and producer of the film. Following that interview, Kelsey Edwards interviews David Howard the screen writer  and co-director of the film along with and Austin Grant, and Stefania Barr. The stars of Trek: The Movie. I feel like I should start with an apology because this recording had so much quality I had to take out just to get it close to thirty minutes. I give all the credit to Alan whose a man and a comic who is all about vulnerability. There's nothing we can't talk about on stage and off and there's nothing we didn't talk about. Alan was one of the two people I met when I first walked into The Fourth Wall to do my first open mic in a new venue and from that moment I've always been so happy to catch up when I see him at a mic.  In this conversation we talk about being considered an Uncle Tom even when you're white, the struggles of being an individual even when you're wrong, and (of course) Granny Porn.

A powerful small business is like a lighthouse; built on a solid foundation, intensely focused and leads people to safe harbor. To illustrate this metaphor, PATRIOT MISSION Entertainment is producing an short original film to tell the story of entrepreneurship from the perspectives of men and women in the trenches. To maximize the impact, we decided to go on location and film lighthouses up close and in different settings. In episode 77 you'll meet Shannon O'Neil, the Director of Public Relations at St. Augustine, Florida Lighthouse. You'll discover there is much more here than simply an amazing million-brick constructed signal to sailors built in 1874. Capturing the the amazing vantage point of a historical site requires a keen eye from an experience Hollywood quality Director as well as the skills of a talented Director of Photography. You'll meet Alan Peterson of Flying Leap Films and Jeff Lambright who give us a behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to plan and produce powerful motion pictures on location. NOTE: Hurricane Mathew's impact is still impacting St. Augustine. The phone lines were still offline during the remote broadcast so the first couple minutes of cell coverage were shaky, but improved for the balance of the show. Enjoy!
