Welcome to Bri Books! Ready to get into wine? These 8 books all about the magical world of vino can help. In this episode, I'm sharing the top 8 books for wine lovers (and beginners). Consider this the ultimate wine lover's reading list. ‘Volcanoes and Wine: From Pompeii to Napa' by Charles Frankel. This book was probably one of my favorite wine-related reads of 2023. In ‘Volcanoes and Wine,' geologist Charles Frankel introduces us to the volcanoes that are among the most dramatic and ideal landscapes for wine making. From California to the Canary Islands and beyond, Frankel gives an in-depth account of famous volcanoes and the wines that spring from their soils. He details each volcano's most famous eruptions, the grapes that grow in its soils, and the people who make their homes on its slopes. This illuminating guide will be indispensable for wine lovers looking to learn more about volcanic terroirs. ($18) University of Chicago Press, Amazon) ‘The Wine Savant: A Guide to the New Wine Culture' by Michael Steinberger. ‘The Wine Savant' is a punchy, educational, and downright entertaining introduction to all things wine culture. This book is valuable for wine drinkers and oenophiles alike. From three-buck Chuck to priceless Bourdeauxs, this book gives the inside scoop on the key concerns facing a new generation of wine lovers.($10) (Amazon, Barnes & Noble, WW Norton, Abe Books, Penguin Random House Canada) ‘Enoteca: Delicious Recipes in the Italian Wine Bar Tradition' by Joyce Goldstein. Renowned chef, author, and teacher Joyce Goldstein explores the origins of enoteca culture and cuisine in Italy, one mouthwatering recipe at a time. With sumptuous color photography throughout, this cookbook expertly pairs classic Italian fare with equally delicious wines, enabling anyone to recreate the enoteca experience at home. ($6) Amazon ‘Fire + Wine: 75 Smoke-Infused Recipes from the Grill with Perfect Wine Pairings' by Mary Cressler and Sean Martin. Consider this book your one-stop guide for elevationg your BBQ game and wine knowledge simultaneously. With 75 recipes that pair smoky goodness from the grill with the wines of the Pacific Northwest, this book is the perfect marriage of pitmaster expertise and sommelier sensibilities. With recipes that celebrate smoked and grilled food (and the wines that pair best with them), this wine-meets-cookbook ticks all the boxes. ($20) (Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Penguin Random House, Target, Abe Books) ‘Movers and Shakers: Advice from the Women Changing the Alcohol Industry' by Hope Ewing. This book is a collection of industry advice and tips, beverage history lessons, and feminist takes on the professional challenges faced by women in the alcohol industry. Hope Ewing dissects how women are paving the way and creating a more inclusive and sustainable world full of delicious drinks. A veteran bartender, Ewing had grown impatient with the surprisingly outdated perceptions of women in the alcohol industry. Entrepreneurial and ambitious, often the first in their fields, the women she knew in the business were leaders, mentors, and trailblazers. In ‘Movers and Shakers', Ewing seeks out the ambitious, entrepreneurial women business leaders, mentors, and trailblazers, and shares their stories with us (along with invaluable advice and insights into a wildly and rapidly evolving industry. ($17) (Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Thriftbooks) ‘VineMeUp: An Activity Book Celebrating The Melanated Wine Enthusiast' by Sarita Cheaves. – Created shortly after the beginning of the pandemic lockdown, Sarita Cheaves channeled her wine knowledge and her love for all things quirky and quizzical into this brilliant and delightful activity book. This book is a compilation of her experience in the wine industry and her commitment to uplifting Black and brown wine experts, influencers, and thought leaders alike ($6) Amazon, ($25) Vinemeupdc.com Natural Wine for the People: Natural Wine for the People: What It Is, Where to Find It, How to Love It' by Alice Feiring. In ‘Natural Wine for the People,' James Beard Award-winner Alice Feiring sets the record straight, offering an accessible guide filled with easy definitions, tips and tricks for sourcing the best wines, whimsical illustrations, a definitive list to the must-know producers and bottlings, and an appendix with the best shops and restaurants specializing in natural wine across the country, making this the must-buy and must-gift wine book of the year. ($18) - Penguin Random House, Amazon, Kitchen Arts & Letters ‘99 Bottles: A Black Sheep's Guide to Life-Changing Wines' by Andre Mack. In this entertaining, informative, and thoroughly unconventional wine guide, award-winning sommelier, winemaker, and wine educator André Mack presents listeners with the 99 bottles that have most impacted his life. Welcome to Episode 1598, From Serial Killer to the World's Hottest Wine Trend with Alice Feiring and Felicity Carter. This is the wine2wine Business Forum 2022 Series. The sessions are recorded and uploaded on Italian Wine Podcast. wine2wine Business Forum is an international wine business event, held annually in Verona, Italy since 2014. The event is a key reference point for wine producers and a diverse variety of wine professionals gather to develop and expand their wine business worldwide. Abstract: In Alice Feiring's new memoir, “To Fall in Love, Drink This”, she does what she has become famous for, linking wine with the shocking, surprising and inconceivable. Case in point: In this book we see her escaping from a serial killer, spending time in one of America's most notorious prisons, visiting concentration camps, and telling off famous spirit producers. Yes, there's joy, loss of unconditional love, Nina Simone and dirt collected in jars as an incredible expression of terroir. It is her coming-of-age story linked to her subject, wine, how she has championed the wines now taking the world by storm. Heralded editor and master storyteller, Felicity Carter is charged with interviewing Feiring. In the session, Carter will explore what it takes to overcome wine media controversy, tell a good wine story about wine, and champion the underdogs until the wine world sits up and takes notice. Come along and find out the power of storytelling – and why the wine world needs to embrace greater transparency if it wants to resonate with modern drinkers.

The Marys are honored to have wine writer extraordinare Alice Feiring on our pod! Acclaimed wine writer Alice Feiring has been in love with wine for decades. She started her sensory training at very young age, sniffing everything along with her grandfather. Little could she have imagined then growing up to be the OG natural wine movement writer, or the person to take down the homogenous ”Parkerization” of wine, a style favored by one wine critic that changed the way many wines around the world were - and still are made. Now Alice has released her sixth book, To Fall in Love Drink This: A Wine Writer's Memoir. But as you'll find out in her engaging chat with us, the Marys, Alice's is not your typical wine memoir. Instead of touting the great vineyards she's visited or wines she's tasted, she recounts an escape from a serial killer - and her reconnection with the perpetrator, and she gives wine recommendations to a plumber, to help him fall in love. You'll want to get your hands on her book right away, and fair warning, it's a page turner that you can't put down.

From veteran wine writer and James Beard Award winner Alice Feiring, an insightful and entertaining memoir of wine, love, heartbreak, and the never-ending process of coming-of-age.Called everything from the Patti Smith to the Ruth Bader Ginsburg of natural wines, Alice Feiring is a special sort of wine writer—the kind who dares to disagree with wine “experts,” and who believes wholeheartedly that the best wine writing is about life.To Fall in Love, Drink This is both a love letter to wine and a lifelong coming-of-age story. In a series of candid, wise, and humorous personal essays, Feiring serves up a memoir in vignettes. She tells the story of her parents' divorce, her first big wine assignment, the end of an eleven-year relationship, the death of her father, a near-fatal brush with a serial killer, pandemic lockdown, and more—and suffuses each with love, romance, pain, joy, and wine. Each essay is “accompanied” by a no-nonsense wine take-away designed to answer the questions everyday wine lovers have about wine—age, price, grapes, vineyards, and vintners. This frank, charismatic work is a refreshingly grounded addition to the popular—and notoriously stuffy—genre of wine-writing. Feiring has crafted a timeless, positively unpretentious memoir that will appeal to everyone who has ever enjoyed a glass of wine.Buy the book from Wellington Square Bookshop - https://wellingtonsquarebooks.indiecommerce.com/book/9781982176761

Welcome to Episode 994 Cynthia Chaplin interviews Alice Feiring, in this installment of Voices, on the Italian Wine Podcast. More about today's guest: Alice Feiring is an American journalist and author, for several years a wine and travel columnist for Time magazine, and known as an advocate for "natural wine". In addition to contributions to publications such as The New York Times, New York Magazine, San Francisco Chronicle, LA Times, Condé Nast Traveler and Forbes Traveler, her blog "The Feiring Line" (formerly: "Veritas in Vino") is considered one of the best in its specific category, and her voice described by Mike Steinberger as part of a new wave of "real flowering of high-quality wine journalism". In 2011, Feiring was selected as "Online Communicator of the Year" by the Louis Roederer International Wine Writer Awards. On Sept. 30, 2020, Feiring was named a Knight of the French Order of Agricultural Merit. Her first book, published in May 2008, The Battle for Wine and Love: Or How I Saved the World from Parkerization, described as "an opinionated look at the fight to preserve authenticity and diversity in wine", due to its perceived "declaration of war" against critic Robert Parker found some controversy well before its date of release. Reviewing the book, Eric Asimov later wrote, "Ms. Feiring is an uncompromising judge of wine and people who can no more stomach a lover's preference for a wine she abhors than she can the presence of a microwave in her kitchen." Feiring's critical statements against California wine as "overblown, over-alcoholed, over-oaked, overpriced and over-manipulated" have also sparked controversy. In 2011, Feiring published Naked Wine: Letting Grapes Do What Comes Naturally. Her 2016 book For the Love of Wine: My Odyssey Through the World's Most Ancient Wine Culture,[16] explores the wine of Georgia. In 2017, Feiring published The Dirty Guide to Wine: Following Flavor from Ground to Glass. Her most recent book Natural Wine For The People: What It Is, Where to Find It, How to Love It was released in August 2019.

The average consumer takes for granted that not all wines are created equally. Conscious consumers know that there are 200 ingredients on the list of government-approved additives for wine. Unlike food, wine manufacturers are not required to list their ingredients (which can include animal proteins, oak chips, sulfurs, yeasts, enzymes, preservatives, and “Mega Purple” which is a brand of highly concentrated wine color) on the side label. This renders most consumers to be clueless about what exactly is in their wine and what is used to produce it. In this segment of The Organic View Radio Show, host, June Stoyer talks to award winning expert, Alice Feiring about her best-selling book, Naked Wine, the process of natural wine making. Food Talk with Mike Colameco is brought to you by the following generous underwriters: This week on a brand new Food Talk, host Mike Colameco first welcomes wine writer Alice Feiring. Raised on Manischewitz, it didn’t take her long to find the better stuff. To Alice, “better” means wines made from organic viticulture with nothing added and nothing taken away. Talking to Mike about her recent favorites and tastings, the two have a great conversation dedicated to natural wines, which she has helped to define. Approaching wine from the ground up, Alice works much like an anthropologist to respect and preserve what is indigenous to wines and their traditions, and this is obvious throughout her appearance on today’s show reflecting that wine unlocks culture and heritage, along with methods that reflect and relate human stories. After the break, Mike sits down with Chantal Martineau, author of “How the Gringos Stole Tequila: The Modern Age of Mexico’s Most Traditional Spirit” chatting all about the progression tequila has made to the status of a fine sipping spirit. Chantal herself spent several years immersing herself in the world of tequila — traveling to visit distillers and agave farmers in Mexico, meeting and tasting with leading experts and mixologists around the United States, and interviewing academics on either side of the border who have studied the spirit. Her book offers a glimpse into the social history and ongoing impact of this one-of-a-kind drink plus thoughts on mezcal, the mother of tequila! “It is a passion to bring back the soil and this region with a phenomenal heritage.” —Alice Feiring on Food Talk

Deirdre Heekin is the author of An Unlikely Vineyard. She is the proprietor and wine director of Osteria Pane e Salute, an acclaimed restaurant and wine bar in Woodstock, Vermont. Heekin and her husband and head chef, Caleb Barber, are the authors of In Late Winter We Ate Pears (Chelsea Green, 2009), and she is also the author of Libation: A Bitter Alchemy (Chelsea Green, 2009) and Pane e Salute (Invisible Cities Press, 2002). Heekin and her husband live on a small farm in Barnard, Vermont, where they grow both the vegetables for their restaurant and natural wines and ciders for their la garagista label. An Unlikely VineyardThe Education of a Farmer and Her Quest for Terroir Is it possible to capture landscape in a bottle? To express the essence of place—its geology, geography, climate, and soil—as well as the skill of the winegrower? That’s what Deirdre Heekin and her husband have set out to accomplish on their tiny, eight-acre hillside farm in Vermont—in their quest for terroir. “Terroir is about mud and stones, but it is also about the varietal nature of the plants or animals that grow in or on this land, the microclimate of a hillside or plain, and the personality of those who do the tending. It represents the six sides of the honeycomb: geology, variety, geography, climate, social culture, and the human hand,” writes Heekin inAn Unlikely Vineyard. “Another winegrower I know says that what is poured into the glass is a liquid landscape painting of the 365 days of a certain year. This is my hope on our farm: to capture the four seasons of each year in the bottle, a liquid portrait of our landscape and its history. This is my quest.”An Unlikely Vineyard tells the story of their farm and its evolution, from overgrown fields to a fertile, productive, and beautiful landscape that melds with its natural environment. But the book is much more than that. It also presents, through the example of their farming journey and winegrowing endeavors, an impressive amount of information onhow to think about almost every aspect of gardening: from composting to trellising; from cider and perry making to old garden roses; from pruning (or not) to dealing naturally with pests and diseases.   Challenged by cold winters, wet summers, and other factors, they set about to grow not only a vineyard, but an orchard of heirloom apples, pears, and plums, as well as gardens filled with vegetables, herbs, roses, and wildflowers destined for their own table and for the kitchen of their small restaurant. They wanted to create, or rediscover, a sense of place, and to grow food naturally using the philosophy and techniques of organics, permaculture, and biodynamic farming. This book is proof of their success, writes Alice Feiring in the book’s Foreword: “In a state so committed to organic and unprocessed food, Deirdre is currently the sole voice for the same kind of wine. But in writing this book, she proves to all who endeavor to make true wine in climates where grapes struggle for ripeness that it is indeed possible. Others will follow. How could they not when the results are so stellar?”Accompanied throughout by lush photos, this gentle narrative will appeal to anyone who loves food, farms, and livingwell.
