The Author of The World in A Wineglass is here! Food & Wine executive wine editor and Travel + Leisure wine editor Ray Isle has been writing about wine and other adult beverages for over 20 years. You've also seen his byline in many publications, including The Washington Post, Time and Wine & Spirits. Ray has also collected all sorts of awards and accolades for his work, including three James Beard nominations for beverage writing. He makes the world of wine understandable and attractive. Ray is also the author of a beautiful new book called The World in a Wineglass. His first book is It is part love letter, part encyclopedia or wine Wikipedia, and part delightful guide to wine around the globe. But Ray is not your typical wine writer. In fact, he might be better known for his wine and potato chip pairings: barbecue chips and Zinfandel or spicy AF jalapeño or sriracha chips with a super acidic chilled white wine like Riesling or Grüner Veltliner. So, Ray is the perfect guide through this world of wine. In The World in a Wine Glass, he explains the difference between corporate-owned, mass-produced wines and the wine producers who grow their own grapes and make wines that reflect the place and vintage variations for a unique sip. He does this by comparing them to the difference between a Taco Bell taco and a taco made from scratch from your local taqueria. The wines that Ray chose for his book offers something more, stories, soul and a few surprises. Yet the world of wine and wine journalism is changing and from his vantage point, Ray has seen it all. So pop the cork, pour a glass and settle in for some great wine stories.

Join us for a geeky yet insightful exploration with real-life implications for redefining wine education and building successful careers in the Fine Wine sector. More about today's guest Pascaline Lepeltier: Growing up in the Loire Valley and detouring from a master's in philosophy and a career as a university teacher, Pascaline began her obsession with wine at the two star Michelin-rated L'Auberge Bretonne under celebrated Chef Jacques THOREL. She overlooks with sommelier Ellis Srubas-Giammanco a 2000+ wine list focusing on “vins de vignerons”, mostly organic, biodynamic and natural. In 2014, Pascaline passed the Master Sommelier Diploma, and in 2018, she won 2 more major titles in her homeland: she is now a laureate of “Un des Meilleurs Ouvriers de France - Sommellerie” and Best French Sommelier 2018. In January 2019, the famous French magazine La Revue du Vin de France awarded her “Personality of the Year 2019”, the first woman to be given this prestigious recognition. Mass produced. Industrially farmed. Corporate owned. Ordinary. To Food & Wine editor Ray Isle, those words describe much of today's wine. He says the way that a wine is made, and who made it, can make a huge difference when you drink it—and that information matters much more than knowing it scored 90 points in some competition. Or that it tastes like blueberries. Or it has "hints of violets and black pepper." Isle aims to help readers choose more delicious, interesting and environmentally friendly wines without breaking the bank. He examined several hundred independently owned wineries around the world, from France to Oregon to southern Chile, and says that a glass of wine can express the place it comes from and capture the essence of the person who made it. He focuses on wines people can afford, rather than $500 rarities, and he'll help you learn where and how to find the most interesting bottles available today. In this special December program, join us for a discussion with Isle followed by a delicious—and interesting—wine tasting. Wine tasting featuring: Cruse Wine Co. What is "REAL" wine? You may be wondering what that even means -- isn't ALL wine "real"? Well, maybe -- but according to Food&Wine magazine's Executive Wine Editor Ray Isle, there is "wine" and then there is "real" wine. And he explains how and why this is possible in this episode, citing stories from his new book The World in a Wineglass: The Insider's Guide to Artisanal, Sustainable, Extraordinary Wines to Drink Now. This is one of the few episodes in which a few curse words are thrown around -- we apologize and promise the words used are not too offensive; just wanted you to know why a wine podcast episode would be labeled as "explicit." In our season one finale, Food & Wine's executive features editor Kat Kinsman catches up with her brilliant friend and colleague, Ray Isle, a few weeks before his debut book "The World in a Wineglass" arrives in stores. Growing up in Texas, the self-described "word-drunk kid" was years away from discovering the pleasures of fermented grapes, but he was clearly a born storyteller — and even ended up as a character in a famous novel. The executive wine editor shared his winding, wonderful path to becoming one of the most trusted and beloved writers and educators in the business, the bottle that changed his life, why Morrissey is such a disappointment, and how fast food tacos can help you feel more confident when you're learning about wine. The INTRODUCTION includes the presentation of the guest and team as well as the opening opinion piece of the host, Antoine Abou-Samra. UNCORKED is the debate segment of The Wine Hour. In this Episode, Jaime Araujo, Akos Forzcek and Ray Isle talk about the risk of great wine regions like Burgundy and Napa Valley to lose new wine drinkers because of ever-escalating prices. SPECIAL GUEST BIO Dynamic, active and passionate about the world of wine and wine growing. Pepe Raventós joined Raventós i Blanc in 2001. He has been part of the world of wine from an early age, spending his summers picking grapes in Sant Sadurní. Pepe also spent hours working on the vineyards in Saint Emilion, learning to make red wines. He gained experience in making terroir wines working alongside Didier Dagenau on Pouilly Fumé, Olivier Lamy at Saint Aubin, Harald Hexamer in the Nahe region and Phillippe Blanc in Alsace. He is always eager to pursue excellence in every detail of his winery. Pepe has taken Raventos i Blanc to the next step, becoming a winegrowing international brand and a point of reference worldwide for its working methods; bringing back together animal, plant and man on a single agricultural unit. In 2012 Pepe Raventós decides to leave the DO Cava to start a new path: Conca del Riu Anoia. Pepe Raventós believes that there is an opportunity for honest wines resulting from a single estate, a specific climate, native grape varieties and rigorous, well-defined and respectful form of viticulture. Now a days, his goal remains the same, to pursue excellence in everything he does, but not through perfection but authenticity; take from each plot the best possible grape and the best possible wine. His passion is viticulture and the vineyard. The cellar is the accompaniment of work done on the vineyard “when you realize nature is the protagonist, you can make wines that are closer to art." His work continues to be based on the quality-driven philosophy of the late Egon Müller III.: "One hundred per cent of the quality of a wine is generated in the vineyard. It is impossible to reach even 101 per cent in the cellars but it is a great achievement to pack the full potential of the vines into a bottle". A descendant of a legendary wine making family, Egon Müller produces Germany's most acclaimed Rieslings. The combination of the fantastic Scharzhofberger terroir, the greatest Grand Cru in Germany, and Egon's genius as a winemaker, result in wines of incredible minerality, fruit, acidity and perfect balance. All Egon Müller's wines have great ageing potential, yet are delicious when consumed young PROGRAM Uncorked [4:55]: Jaime Araujo, Akos Forzcek and Ray Isle talk about cork and its importance in the wine world, from the consumer side to the producer side. Licensed To Taste [27:56]: Tanisha Townsend meets the challenge to explain in less than 10 minutes German Ripeness Levels. As the rush for pre-holiday Covid tests continues, new studies suggest that omicron may have lower hospitalization risk than other Covid-19 variants. CNBC's Meg Tirrell discusses the new data as well as the FDA's approval of Pfizer's therapeutic pill and the other oral treatments that could come in 2022. While the variant puts extra pressure on an already squeezed supply chain, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg provides an update on the nation's supply chain bottlenecks and collaboration between the Biden Administration and the private sector to keep the holiday season running smoothly. The holidays are different this year, but some traditions live on, including tracking Santa's Christmas Eve journey around the world. U.S. Air Force Capt. Sable Brown, public affairs officer at the North American Aerospace Defense Command, discusses NORAD's 66th year tracking Santa Claus' journey around the globe, with a little help from Rudolph's nose. So, pop the bubbly--if you can find it! Ray Isle, Food & Wine Magazine executive wine editor, explains why champagne may be hard to come by this holiday season. Plus, he offers a few sparkling recommendations for your liquor store trip: Segura Viudas Brut Reserva Heredad Cava ($60/Magnum), Champagne Alfred Gratien Brut Rosé ($70), and, for the festive splurge, Champagne Bollinger RD 2007 Brut ($300). But how did these changes affect the wine industry as a whole, and will these trends continue into 2021 and beyond? This week on Beyond the Shelf, we spoke with the Executive Wine Editor at Food & Wine Magazine, Ray Isle. In this episode, Ray shared with us how the pandemic has affected the wine industry, and how wineries are adapting to new consumer behaviors. He also broke down some of the biggest trends in wine and even gave us a few wine recommendations.
Ray Isle, executive wine editor at Food & Wine, joins us to discuss everything you need to know about sparkling wines for your celebrations at home, from champagne to prosecco, including affordable holiday picks, last minute gift ideas, and wine trends from this year.

How about Prosecco? Would you like to pay 100 percent more for them in 2020? Or perhaps not even be able to find them for sale at all?” read the opening passages of Food & Wine Executive Wine Editor Ray Isle’s latest article “Why 2020 Is Looking Dangerous for Wine Lovers.” In this installment of Leonard Lopate at Large on WBAI, Ray describes the devastating effect on the European wine market in America that a new round of tariffs could have in 2020.
