There are many pathways to fame and fortune, but being exceptionally good at doing laundry is an unusual one. Enter Melissa Dilkes Pateras, whose knowledge of housecleaning tips and tricks has turned her into an internet sensation. Well, that, and her sly sense of humour and unblinking acknowledgement of her sexuality. A resident of Uxbridge, Ontario, and mother of three, Melissa started making videos during the Covid-19 lockdown to entertain herself, and went viral on Facebook, then TikTok, and ultimately an appearance on the CBS Morning Show. She also found love when she connected with her now wife Tracy, who moved from Australia to Canada to be together. We talk love, keeping a clean house, trad wives, and the truth about laundry strips (it's not good). We love writing and would love for you to read what we write. Sign up for our Substack Newsletter. If you would like to support the show, we do have partner opportunities available. Please email Wendy and Maureen at womenofir@gmail.com A Transcription of the show is available on the episode page. The sound of crickets on a summer night can be quite pleasing. And the little critters making that sound have some interesting characteristics and abilities I bet you never knew. People have fewer friends than ever before and the number of people who feel lonely is at record high levels. Why is friendship so hard? Well, it's not really, according to Anna Goldfarb. She makes friends quite easily and she says you can too if you are willing to try. Want to know how? Then you need to listen to Anna. She is a friendship journalist who has reported for The New York Times, Time magazine, and the Washington Post and she is author of the book, Modern Friendship: How to Nurture Our Most Valued Connections (https://amzn.to/3K9Fqdb). If any podcast can make the topic of housework exciting – it is this podcast. What's so interesting is a lot of what we learned about how to do housework is ineffective, outdated and sometimes just plain wrong. The result is that you may be wasting time and money and not doing a particularly great job at keeping your house and clothes clean. To rescue is Melissa Pateras. She creates very popular TikTok videos about house cleaning tips and tricks (https://www.tiktok.com/@melissadilkespateras?lang=en) and she is author of the book, A Dirty Guide to a Clean Home: Housekeeping Hacks You Can't Live Without (https://amzn.to/3VbJ0ts) There are a lot of reasons to get your kids to play outside in the sunshine. On this week's episode, Diana chats with laundry expert and author Melissa Dilkes Pateras all about laundry myths, best practices, and so much more. You can find her on TikTok here: Laundrytok | Melissa Pateras (@melissadilkespateras) Official | TikTokYou can find her new book here: A Dirty Guide to a Clean Home: Housekeeping Hacks You Can't Live WithoutIn this episode, we cover:Homemade laundry detergent is not effective and can damage your washing machine. The guest explained that commercial detergents are specifically formulated for high-efficiency machines and properly cleaning clothes. Homemade detergents often do not clean well and leave residue on clothes. As the host said, “Homemade laundry detergent is often not effective and can leave residue on your clothes. It's best to stick with commercial detergents that are specifically formulated for high-efficiency machines.”Look for natural, eco-friendly detergent options if you want to avoid harsh chemicals. Many major brands like Tide and Persil offer fragrance-free, dye-free options that work well. Check the ingredients to find simple, natural options. For most stains, pretreat with liquid laundry detergent and let it sit before washing. Dish soap like Dawn also works great for grease and oil stains. Hydrogen peroxide is excellent for whitening and brightening stains on white clothes. These methods avoid the need for most commercial stain removers. As the host recommended, “For most stains, pretreat with liquid laundry detergent and let it sit before washing. Dish soap like Dawn also works great for grease and oil stains.”Hot water is not necessary for most loads and can fade and damage clothes. Use cold water for the majority of loads to prolong the life of your clothes. Hot water is only needed for whites and when using oxygen bleach. According to the host, “Hot water is not necessary for most loads and can fade and damage clothes. Use cold water for the majority of loads to prolong the life of your clothes.”Disinfecting and sanitizing clothing is usually unnecessary and the products are often used incorrectly. Only disinfect when someone in the household is ill. Be sure to follow the directions carefully regarding water temperature, sit time, and rinsing. For general cleaning, hot water and detergent are sufficient. As the host explained, “Disinfecting and sanitizing clothing is usually unnecessary and the products are often used incorrectly. Only disinfect when someone in the household is ill.”What can you expect from this podcast and future episodes?15-20 minute episodes to help you tackle your to-do listHow to declutter in an effective and efficient wayGuest interviewsDeep dives on specific topicsFind Diana Rene on social media:Instagram: @the.decluttered.momFacebook: @the.decluttered.momPinterest: @DianaRene Are you ready for a peaceful and clutter-free home? Welcome to Episode 1598, From Serial Killer to the World's Hottest Wine Trend with Alice Feiring and Felicity Carter. This is the wine2wine Business Forum 2022 Series. The sessions are recorded and uploaded on Italian Wine Podcast. wine2wine Business Forum is an international wine business event, held annually in Verona, Italy since 2014. The event is a key reference point for wine producers and a diverse variety of wine professionals gather to develop and expand their wine business worldwide. Abstract: In Alice Feiring's new memoir, “To Fall in Love, Drink This”, she does what she has become famous for, linking wine with the shocking, surprising and inconceivable. Case in point: In this book we see her escaping from a serial killer, spending time in one of America's most notorious prisons, visiting concentration camps, and telling off famous spirit producers. Yes, there's joy, loss of unconditional love, Nina Simone and dirt collected in jars as an incredible expression of terroir. It is her coming-of-age story linked to her subject, wine, how she has championed the wines now taking the world by storm. Heralded editor and master storyteller, Felicity Carter is charged with interviewing Feiring. In the session, Carter will explore what it takes to overcome wine media controversy, tell a good wine story about wine, and champion the underdogs until the wine world sits up and takes notice. Come along and find out the power of storytelling – and why the wine world needs to embrace greater transparency if it wants to resonate with modern drinkers. Her first book, published in May 2008, The Battle for Wine and Love: Or How I Saved the World from Parkerization, described as "an opinionated look at the fight to preserve authenticity and diversity in wine", due to its perceived "declaration of war" against critic Robert Parker found some controversy well before its date of release. Reviewing the book, Eric Asimov later wrote, "Ms. Feiring is an uncompromising judge of wine and people who can no more stomach a lover's preference for a wine she abhors than she can the presence of a microwave in her kitchen." Feiring's critical statements against California wine as "overblown, over-alcoholed, over-oaked, overpriced and over-manipulated" have also sparked controversy. In 2011, Feiring published Naked Wine: Letting Grapes Do What Comes Naturally. Her 2016 book For the Love of Wine: My Odyssey Through the World's Most Ancient Wine Culture,[16] explores the wine of Georgia. In 2017, Feiring published The Dirty Guide to Wine: Following Flavor from Ground to Glass. Her most recent book Natural Wine For The People: What It Is, Where to Find It, How to Love It was released in August 2019. The difference that separates the good ones from the not so good ones, is who is willing to put in the work. #wwg1wga I will give you enough to seek out on your own, so you can think and act independently and as a stand alone Superintendent. Don't Be a Dick Manager: The Down & Dirty Guide to Management by James Monroe Take a successful employee, promote them into management but give them no management training and there’s a very good chance you’ll create a defensive, insecure, unsuccessful, dick manager. Here is the management training you never got! This honest, straightforward guide reveals the things nobody talks about–knowledge that only comes from real-world experience in the management trenches. It will change the way you look at yourself, your job and your career and it will enable you to be a successful leader and mentor. Most importantly, it will help you avoid becoming a dick manager (or, if it’s too late, to reform) so you can enjoy the personal and financial rewards of being a great manager.Discover the power of the Laws of Management and understand the personal characteristics you must have to excel as a manager.Learn how to deal with non-communicative, mean, micromanaging, bully bosses, and how to figure out when it’s time for you to leave an impossible situation.Find out how to deal with ambitious employees and how to turn around hostile, jaded ones. And be warned about the one type of employee who must go, no matter what.Filled with anecdotes from more than 20 years of management experience, this book takes a frank look at the author’s mistakes and triumphs, his great bosses and his dick managers and the lessons learned from all of them.About James Monroe I became a manager at the age of 29. It was a big job. I had a lot of autonomy, a good-sized team and no management training whatsoever. And the moment I walked into my fancy new office, my education began. I'd been working since the age of 11 and I'd had eight bosses by then. All I knew about management was that I wanted to copy the good things I'd seen and avoid the bad. Fortunately, I had a supportive boss and a forgiving team. I made some mistakes, but I learned from them, as I have in every job since. I went on to manage teams in large media companies like CBS and NBC (while it was owned by both GE and Comcast) and in tiny Silicon Valley tech startups. I've worked in government as well as the service, consumer product, media and technology industries. Though every company was different, the great managers I knew-and there were very few of them-all had something in common: they had very specific personal characteristics that enabled them to be great. Few people are born with these characteristics, but many more can acquire them if they work at it. These are things nobody talks about, which is a shame because I wish I'd known about them much sooner. This is my attempt to help other mangers, particularly those who are early in their careers, make fewer mistakes and enjoy long, rewarding, successful management careers. This book isn't based on academic studies or on one person's unusual, one-of-a-kind experience. It's based on working in the trenches year after year, learning as I went and eventually understanding what it takes to be a great manager.

Matt and Scott revisit a concept explored thoroughly in the Blue Book (Starting Strength: Basic Barbell Training 3rd Edition) but, until now, not given the full treatment at Barbell Logic. This concept is known as the Master Cue, and refers to the importance of keeping the barbell positioned over the middle of the foot, or simply "midfoot", during the squat and deadlift. The Master Cue is a reminder to the lifter to make the bar travel perfectly vertical, as if moving in a vertical slot. As described back in Episode 8: A Quick and Dirty Guide to Barbell Physics, the primary force pulling on the barbell seated on the lifter's back (in a squat) or in his hands (in a deadlift) is gravity, which pulls toward the center of the earth or, in other words, downward. Thus the most efficient path against gravity -- the path in which the most work is performed -- is vertical, or up. Any deviation from a vertical path requires effort, but does not contribute to vertical motion and therefore does not constitute work. The Master Cue focuses the lifters attention on this critical aspect of physics while drawing his attention away from minutia and micromanagement of individual body parts. If a lifter has been taught how to perform a squat correctly, the Master Cue often fixes a multitude of problems with one simple thought. Scott recounts how he personally struggled with the Master Cue, grasping the concept intellectually but unable to put it into practice under the bar. Then he made a key realization: under sufficient load, the bottom of the foot acts as a pressure gauge, and if he fixed his attention on where he felt the pressure in his foot he could control the position of the bar over the foot. The "diagnostic foot," as Hambrick dubs it, is a useful tool for coaches. If a coach observes air under the toe or heel of the lifter's shoe during a lift, that lifter is certainly NOT staying balanced on his midfoot, and corrective cues are necessary. Even if you don't see air, you can usually see movement within the shoe which may indicate a problem with the midfoot relationship. One last thing since we're talking physics... although Starting Strength often equates "midfoot" and "vertical bar path," it's important to understand that the bar should be positioned over the middle of the lifter-barbell system, that is, the center of mass (COM) comprising the bar and the mass of the lifter behind the bar. Practically, this means the bar will actually be in front of the midfoot during light warm-up sets with the empty bar, because the mass of the lifter significantly outweighs the bar. Nevertheless the combined COM will still be over the midfoot. At sufficiently heavy weights the combined COM is close enough to the bar that the bar will travel over the middle of the foot. In reference to Tai Lopez, Damion mentions that some people see the videos with the Lamborghini in the garage and are motivated by that, however Damion asks that you “figure out whats under the hood of the car, and the guy.” It becomes obvious very quickly that Damion is constantly learning, as he references many influencers and authors throughout the podcast. Damion directs his message to empowering others to live the kind of life that is without regrets, and one where your excited about Monday morning because you are doing what you love. If you want to sell your adventure, campaign, or home-brew world to your potential players, you need a “Campaign Bible.” When TV writers and directors create a new series, they often have a “show bible” -- this document not only helps keep everyone on the same page, but serves as a sort of mission statement, establishing tone, theme, and the direction of the show, often serving as a selling point to producers and investors. This is also a good way to think about your game. You can introduce your players to your campaign by writing a “campaign bible” and we’re here to help you do it well! Master DM and WotC designer Chris Perkins shared one of his campaign bibles for a setting that never got off the ground, “Valoreign.” We’ve decided to use his excellent campaign bible as an example and guide for how to create your own guide. Link to Chris Perkins’ campaign bible for “Valoreign.” A must-listen episode for DMs who want to start a new campaign! Matt and Rob’s “Guide to Making a Campaign Bible,” a guide and checklist for creating a document to introduce your players to a new setting or adventure! Whiskey of the Week Slim Haney’s 1965 Seagram’s VO Reynolds and Hambrick do a quick overview of the forces the body is subjected to when moving barbells. The big takeaway is that we use our knowledge anatomy and of moment, torque, compression and tension to help us determine what the best possible form for each barbell lift should be. In the squat, for example, we preferentially load moment on the back segment and torque on the hip in order to move the most weight possible, with the most muscle mass, over the longest effective range of motion.
