What if the roadblocks you're facing in business are the same childhood wounds you've been carrying for years? I spent the first three years of my business operating from fear., but once I realized that, everything changed. In this deeply personal episode, I'm taking you behind the scenes of my own journey and how healing my trauma was the key to building my successful business. I share stories from my early days in school counseling to the emotional and spiritual awakening I experienced, which helped me create powerful tools like The Metamorphosis and Real Results. These tools have not only transformed my life but are now helping countless women address their inner child wounds and move forward in both life and business. From navigating fear, scarcity, and ancestral trauma, to breaking through limiting beliefs about money and visibility, I uncover the deep-rooted patterns that may be holding you back from success. If you're feeling stuck in your business or personal growth, this episode offers a powerful reminder that the path to success starts with addressing the core wounds that keep showing up.Q&AI'm preparing a live Q&A episode (with a BIG PRIZE included) and I'd love to get as many questions as possible. #108: He Grew His Vertical SaaS Business for 5 Years and Sold It for a Big Prize – Mike Kovarik

Practical Founders Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 30, 2024 68:27

Mike Kovarik is the founder and former CEO of Attribytes, a software company he started, grew, and successfully sold in just over five years. Mike was a data analytics leader at large food distributors, where he discovered a chronic challenge with low-quality product data in their massive e-commerce systems. He quit his job, built a product with a friend, and his former employer became his first customer.  Attribytes grew steadily in the next few years, serving food distributors and retailers in the US, with Mike making the first sales and slowly adding new employees. He invested his savings in the company and raised just over $2 million from a strategic and several angel investors in Phoenix, Arizona. They grew to nearly $5 million in ARR in 2019 with just over 20 employees.  In 2020, Mike sold the company to Syndigo, a larger data management provider that served the same industry. He joined Syndigo for over a year to lead the acquisition of other data management companies to expand their product offerings. When their acquisition strategy changed in 2022, Mike left to take a break and then acquire and retool another vertical software company called ShopControlller. Quote from Mike Kovarik, founder of Attribytes "I built a little spreadsheet and I put in what our revenue was, what our current valuation was, and then what that exit would look like after taxes for me, just to see what that dollar amount was. We were at almost $5M ARR, and we were getting interest from acquirers, so it was already interesting. "I created another spreadsheet to show what would happen if we raised big VC funding and invested that lover for 5-10 years to grow. What rate of return would I get? How would we be diluted? What annual recurring revenue would we need to get to, and what valuation would that be? What would my dollar amount be? "The reality is that the amount for me would be pretty close to the same if we sold now or raised a big VC round. And I'm not trying to risk everything to potentially buy a plane. I could have a big exit now and have a lake house and a place in Flagstaff, and my kids' kids will be good. What else do I need?" Last week I interviewed a journalist named Rose Hackman, who wrote a book called Emotional Labor: The Invisible Work Shaping Our Lives and How to Claim Our Power, and it got me thinking about a few things. So much so that I turned on the mic right after I got off Zoom with her, and recorded this minisode for you.  First, I muse on what emotional labor looks like at work, but more specifically, as I personally reflect on my past relationships, what it looks like in romantic partnerships. I know my experience isn't uncommon, so you may see yourself in my story.  We all have patterns in our lives, and most of us have had them for decades. It's a HUGE ask to expect yourself to see the patterns you don't like, and just change them. There's a lot of “messy middle”.  This minisode is about identifying those patterns and hopefully coming to a decision about what you'll accept… and for the things that have become unacceptable, or what I call in the episode “too expensive”, deciding what you plan to do about it.  Learn more about your ad choices. We will find out—   ONE — The Red Wave is coming—and it has captured a small flag in Iowa—but the big prize is in Virginia—and continued mis-steps by Democrat—former Governor Terry McAuliffe—could cost him the job in the second go round—   In fact Glenn Youngkin—has the one thing every football coach wants with less than 3 weeks to go—and that is Big Mo—all the momentum   Plus McAuliffe has alienated two of the biggest voting blocks he must count on if he expects to pull off the win— first—and maybe most important—it's the parents—and right now he is not doing well in that column—and its an indication of Democrats in general—being out of touch thinking they can tell parents what is best for their kids—it really is outrageous—   The other group he must not let slip away—are the independents—and the bad news is—those very same independents are fleeing from President Biden and his sinking ship—they have seen enough of his failed policies—

There's been a buzz around the Crusaders' camp this week with their eyes on a third consecutive title and a couple of freshly minted All Blacks in the squad.Impressive backline duo Braydon Ennor and Sevu Reece were among the 39 players named in the first All Blacks squad of the year, hearing their names called out for the first time. But while excitement levels were high, coach Scott Robertson has implored them to keep their eyes on the prize."The old Whatsapp groups have been fired up; love hearts and fist pumps over the last few days," Robertson told Radio Sport's D'Arcy Waldegrave. "[But] we moved on pretty quickly because we've got a job to do."The Crusaders will welcome the Jaguares to OrangeTheory Stadium in Christchurch tomorrow night as they look to lock away the Super Rugby title for another year. It's a match up that Robertson admits he didn't expect when the season started, but one that is likely to be a very physical encounter. The Jaguares impressed all season to finish on top of a tightly contested South African conference and showed they were more than capable of getting the job done at home or on the road."There aren't many guys who would have said you'd be playing them [in the final] at the start of the season. You've got to give it to them. You've got the ability to front up when they do travel," Robertson said of the Jaguares."We're really impressed with them. It's going to take all of, probably more, effort than against the Hurricanes."Robertson described last weekend's semifinal against the Hurricanes as "anything but a final", with the high-intensity affair going down to the wire. The side will be without star duo Ryan Crotty and Scott Barrett for the final, with Ennor replacing Crotty in the midfield and Mitchell Dunshea deputising for Barrett at lock alongside Sam Whitelock. Young outside back Will Jordan joins the bench.Crusaders: David Havili, Sevu Reece, Braydon Ennor, Jack Goodhue, George Bridge, Richie Mo'unga, Bryn Hall, Kieran Read, Matt Todd, Whetukamokamo Douglas, Sam Whitelock, Mitchell Dunshea, Owen Franks, Codie Taylor, Joe Moody. Reserves: Andrew Makalio, George Bower, Michael Alaalatoa, Luke Romano, Jordan Taufua, Mitchell Drummond, Mitchell Hunt, Will Jordan.Jaguares: Emiliano Boffelli, Matias Moroni, Matias Orlando, Jeronimo de la Fuente, Ramiro Moyano, Joaquin Diaz Bonilla, Tomas Cubelli, Javier Ortega Desio, Marcos Kremer, Pablo Matera, Tomas Lavanini, Guido Petti, Santiago Medrano, Agustin Creevy, Nahuel Tetaz Chaparro. Reserves: Julian Montoya, Mayco Vivas, Enrique Pieretto, Juan Manuel Leguizamon, Tomas Lezana, Felipe Ezcurra, Domingo Miotti, Sebastian Cancelliere

Canadian rockers Honeymoon Suite might be the most undervalued melodic rock band of the 80s. Though always maintaining a profile up north, the band deserved more attention in the states and around the rest of the world. Hits like "New Girl Now," "What Does It Take" and "Feel It Again" from their 1986 masterpiece The Big Prize (produced by Bruce Fairbairn) are perfect examples of the very best that genre had to offer. Like most 80s rock bands, the 90s weren't kind to HMS and the spotlight moved on, but guitarist and primary songwriter Derry Grehan explains that today they are able to continue to tour around their native Canada. We also discuss the songs they've had in movies, working with luminaries like Bruce, Bob Rock, and Ted Templeman, and last year's excellent return to form Hands Up. Please rediscover this excellent band!   http://honeymoonsuiteband.com/

When Toronto attorney Charles Vance Millar died in 1926, he left behind a mischievous will that promised a fortune to the woman who gave birth to the most children in the next 10 years. Is this the year? Is this the team? Can Notre Dame win Muffet McGraw her second NCAA championship? Of course we will not know until April, but it sure looks like it could be. This team is loaded, top to bottom, with talented players. Pre-season All-American Brianna Turner and senior point guard Lindsey Allen received the early press, but now it is sophomore guard Arike Ogunbowale that is leading the team, earning ESPNw Player of the Week honors today for her performance in the Preseason WNIT. Ogunbowale's 19.5 points per game has been a revelation, and her 67 percent from three shooting and 56 percent overall phenomenal. As mentioned above, though, top to bottom this team has the talent to keep its grasp on the number one spot it has in both polls. Ogunbowale, Allen, and Marina Mabrey are the shooters. Turner, Kathryn Westbeld, and Kristina Nelson the rebounders. Youthful exuberance comes from freshmen Erin Boley and Jackie Young. Then there's the coaching staff. McGraw and her team of associates are some of the very best minds in the game, and push their team to greatness like few other staffs can. If everyone stays healthy, especially Turner, it will be a great season for the Irish. We caught up with coach McGraw when they were announced as AP number one team to start the season and discussed what the year could be. Here is the interview and thoughts of McGraw, in her own words.
