In May 2007, as part of the federal investigation into Epstein's sex trafficking, the FBI planned to arrest him while he was judging a beauty pageant in the U.S. Virgin Islands. The move was highly strategic: they had gathered evidence and believed the event would provide an opportunity to act. However, prosecutors in the U.S. Attorney's Office in Southern Florida intervened and blocked the plan, deciding not to approve the indictment at that time. They delayed the case, and Epstein remained free for a longer period before ultimately negotiating the non-prosecution agreement instead of facing full federal charges.This beauty pageant episode has become emblematic of the deeper problems in how Epstein was handled: prosecutors overruling agents, delays in approving charges, and the decision to settle for a plea that many say let Epstein off too lightly. Supporters of the victims argue that had the plan to arrest Epstein at the pageant moved forward, it might have prevented further abuse and revealed more of the network of accomplices earlier on. But her life outside the pageant circuit was mired in the world of drugs, bikie gangs and violence (CW: graphic discussion of domestic violence and crime) Felicia Djamirze is a counsellor, an advocate for women's justice, a three-time Miss Australia winner and a convicted drug trafficker.Felicia grew up surrounded by drug abuse and crime in a rough part of Sydney. Her family was marked by addiction and connections to the criminal underworld.As she got older, Felicia attracted a lot of attention for her looks, eventually finding the world of beauty pageants, which she thought was her way out.But behind the scenes, Felicia's life was far from glamorous.While living with a partner who was in a bikie gang, she survived severe domestic violence. Then, during her next relationship she was caught up in an horrifically violent encounter with the Queensland Police when they burst into her home to arrest her partner for dealing meth.Felicia admitted her involvement and was convicted for drug trafficking. Around election time people get addicted to bad stories, downing them cocktail after cocktail. And that's because presidential elections, which are the beauty pageants of babylon, usually turn on this simple storytelling question: Who can tell the most compelling tale about their opponents? Harris-Walz is trying with video games and guns and abortion; Trump-Vance is trying with filthy comedians and French fries and free speech. Analysis gets really entertaining when you get to watch how fringe elements on both side stand where their opponents tell them to stand and say what their opponents tell them to say (this is where AOC and groypers overlap in their hatred of Israel, and where fascists and communists sort everyone into categories based on sunburn-ability). In literary terms, we Americans in 2024 are living in a black comedy, which is a satire in which the main characters cannot see that the rules they live by are crazy. But the audience can. And unfortunately, black comedies usually end in destruction for everyone but the audience. Speaking of audiences: who is your audience? What matters for you, right now, on a Tuesday afternoon, isn't the centuries-long stories God is telling of the rise and fall of nations -- it's how you treat your wife, kids, boss, pastor; and how your actions are telling a story to everyone you live with. So, vote for Trump, but God is the only Storyteller who should have control of your emotions. Stories are soul food, after all.
