Ben Clymer grew up in a New York suburb, raised by middle-class public school teachers and enamored by his grandfather's swagger and style. An Omega Speedmaster, a gift from said grandfather, is the piece that captured his heart and sets his story in motion. A painstakingly shy student, he began to gain self-confidence in high-school and a need to differentiate in college. In 2008 he started a tiny blog, HODINKEE, a passion-project about watches that gained traction and sent him on a mission to get a Master's in Journalism. Since then, HODINKEE has led to creative collaborations with the most prestigious watch brands and famous rockstars, and grown into a multi-channel platform that has transformed the world of luxury watches. Show Notes: Episode Title: Why the WOS Purchase of Hodinkee Didn't Move the Needle for Me Episode Description:In today's episode, I explore Watches of Switzerland's acquisition of Hodinkee and why, as an enthusiast, it doesn't change much for me. We break down Ben Clymer's spin on the deal, how Hodinkee has evolved into a marketing machine, and why the real focus should remain on the watches. I also explain how Hodinkee's access to WOS's inventory could create more opportunities to learn about timepieces and encourage listeners to look past the “plumage” and focus on the “meat”—the watches. Key Discussion Points: WOS Buying Hodinkee: Why it's not a merger—it's a sale. My Enthusiast Reaction: This doesn't change much for me as someone who loves watches. Hodinkee's Evolution: How it has become more of a polished sales platform. Loyalty and Trust: Why I put my trust in the watches themselves, not in any one platform. Focus on the Watches: How Hodinkee's access to WOS's inventory could offer more opportunities for enthusiasts to learn about watches. Today (October 4, 2024) marks a major shift in the watch industry. Hodinkee, the leading voice in modern watch media, has been fully acquired by Watches of Switzerland, a massive UK based retailer with operations around the world including in the US. Only a few months ago, Ben Clymer, founder of Hodinkee – and as of today, a President at Watches of Switzerland – announced that the publication was shuttering their retail business and going to back to focus on “the basics” (i.e., their editorial product). So what does this all mean for Hodinkee, its stakeholders, and of course the industry at large? Hosted by Asher Rapkin and Gabe Reilly, co-founders of Collective Horology, Openwork goes inside the watch industry. You can find us online at collectivehorology.com. The Patek Philippe Calatrava Episode With Ben and Rich

Today: the vintage Patek Philippe Calatrava episode. Introduced in 1932, though it wouldn't be called the "Calatrava" until years later, the Patek Philippe Calatrava is perhaps the most iconic watch ever, laying the blueprint for the modern dress watch. It was also introduced at a pivotal time in the history of Patek Philippe, just after it had been acquired by the Stern family. After the acquisition, the Stern brothers hired Jean Pfister, a technical master who would lead the development of the first serially produced complications that defined so much of Patek's collection during the mid-20th century. But first came the Calatrava ref. 96, Patek's first serially-produced reference. I called up founder Ben Clymer and client advisor Rich Fordon to discuss the Patek Calatrava. We start by asking: what even is a "Calatrava," and what isn't? Then, we jump through the history of the line, from the original reference 96 through the golden era of the refs. 570, 565, 2508, and others (depending on your definition of "Calatrava"), through the hobnail ref. 3919 and then the rebirth of the traditional Calatrava in the 1980s and '90s. We also take a look at a few of our favorite overlooked Calatrava references as well as the most expensive ones to ever sell at auction. In the show notes below, I've tried to include a link to each reference we mention to help you follow along with our discussion. Thanks as always for listening – let us know if you liked this model-focused discussion, and if so, what model you'd like to hear us discuss next.  Show Notes3:55: The Calatrava collection on Patek's website5:05: A Visual Guide to Rare Patek Philippe Calatravas5:50: Patek Philippe ref. 3919 (Hodinkee Shop)11:54: Introducing: Audemars Piguet Mini Royal Oaks13:18: Steel Patek Calatrava ref. 96 with sector dial at Sotheby's16:36: The 'Imperial Patek Philippe' Owned By The Last Emperor Of China Sells For $6.2 Million17:22: The Patek Ref. 565 With Breguet Dial For Sale At Phillips17:30: Patek ref. 570 in yellow gold (Hodinkee Shop)18:24: White gold Patek ref. 570 (Hodinkee Shop)21:30: Alfredo Paramico Talking Watches, featuring his three two-tone dial 570s24:35: Patek Philippe ref. 250928:45: The Patek Philippe 2526, And Why It's A Watch To Pay Attention To34:52: Introducing: The Rexhep Rexhepi Chronomètre Contemporain II With Ruby Indices, Limited To Ten Pieces40:26: Patek 2577 with enamel dial at Phillips42:28: Patek ref. 530 with black dial and Breguet numerals that sold for CHF 1.4 million43:05: Patek ref. 570 with two-tone dial and Breguet numerals that sold for CHF 3.3 million (most expensive Calatrava sold at auction)47:26: Patek ref. 3796 (Hodinkee Shop)51:10: Patek ref. 3923 for Harrod's 150th anniversary (Mr. Watchley)52:00: Andy Warhol's Patek 2526 with Breguet numerals

He knew nothing about watches, their design history and the immense investment of human effort it's taken to engineer accurate timepieces until he bought an Apple Watch. He loves wearing a watch, but notifications and tracking caused him to abandon it for something simpler and mechanical. Anyone curious about watches will inevitably end up at Hodinkee.com, the premier publication about watches and the rich culture around them. Hodinkee was founded by Ben Clymer, who found his way into watches when his grandfather gave him the Omega watch right off his wrist. It sparked not only a deep passion for watches, but a company that has built a community of enthusiasts around the world. You might be thinking, watches are a strange topic for Design Better to cover. But they represent a beautiful intersection of design and technology that has been pursued for centuries. They're also one of the few trans-generational objects in our lives that connect us with the people we love, as Ben Clymer shared with us in our conversation. We spoke with Ben about consulting with Jony Ive on Apple's watch design, Jony's deep dive into horology, how Ben went about creating such a compelling content brand, and his journey from being a founder and CEO back to being an individual contributor to the company he started. Bio Benjamin Clymer is widely considered to be a leading voice in the wristwatch industry. He is regularly quoted in major publications including The New York Times, Reuters, Forbes, Departures, GQ, and the Financial Times, and was dubbed “The High Priest of Horology” by The New York Times in 2013. Benjamin has acted as a consultant and guest speaker for Apple, and was named to “The Hypebeast Hundred” as one of the 100 most important influencers in global culture in both 2013 and 2014.  *** Premium Episodes on Design Better This is a premium episode on Design Better (learn more in the announcement here). He's probably best known for his tenure at Tudor, during which the brand relaunched in the United States and introduced the Black Bay line. But he's not all business; the jovial and well-dressed Italian brings his unique sense of style to the staid Swiss watch industry. After Tudor, he made stops at Montblanc and HYT before being announced as the CEO of Bremont in May 2023. The announcement came after billionaire hedge fund manager Bill Ackman and Hellcat Acquisitions LP invested $59 million in Bremont in a funding round that the Financial Times reported valued the company at more than £100 million. As Cerrato tells us, Bremont is gearing up for a "relaunch" of the brand at Watches & Wonders in April 2024 – the first time it'll exhibit at the annual trade show in Geneva. John is an expert in all things vintage Patek, and the two talk about where the brand's auction fascination started and how that has been reflected in a broad collection of special references (think: 3700 to 5711, and the likes of the 5970, 3970, 3448, 5270, 5070 chronograph, and even the legendary 2499).It's a walk down memory lane as both Ben and John recall exciting moments in their history with Patek's watches alongside the more macro trends that have seen some references shine while others wait for a spot in the limelight. After a morning of previewing the New York watch auctions at Sotheby's and Phillips, the three chat about the state of the market and watch auctions before jumping into their thoughts on some of the watches they saw in New York. There's a  discussion of vintage Patek and Rolex – including the collection of one collector beloved by the community – but also other brands, indies, and even our favorite Richard Milles. At the end of it all, the trio pick their favorite watches that they saw, as well as the lots they'll be watching to get a gauge on the state of the auction market. Sotheby's Important Watches auction takes place on December 7, and Phillips New York Auction: Nine happens on December 9–10. Tristan Walker may be new to the collecting scene, but if the name sounds familiar, well, that's because he sold company Walker & Company (makers of the grooming brand Bevel) to Procter & Gamble and sits on the board of companies like Shake Shack and Footlocker. Tristan's approach to collecting is very similar to the way he runs his companies, and consistency is the name of the game. His passion for collecting is ever growing and he's making the right relationships along the way. Our text chain is nothing short of a year's worth of watch purchases, books, and some good banter between the two of us. My favorite part about Tristan's collection? If you put 10 collectors in a room, not a single one of us would ever guess what's sitting in his watch box, and I have the pictures to prove it. It's not just what's sitting at home that makes him a great collector, it's the fact that he has a great eye for design and you can see it in the products he's created. At the end of the day, the guy just gets it. Today's guest is none other than Ben Clymer, Chairman & Founder of Hodinkee. As someone whose background and company need no introduction, I figured we could dive right into all things collecting, both watches and cars. See, Ben's been around the block a few times and it's easy to not get jaded. So what's keeping Ben interested these days is what I really wanted to know. We talk about the grail Talking Watches guests and why it's not just about being a collector, but having the passion to do so. Of course we dive into his passion for car collecting and his elusive, one of only nine, Porsche Zagato 356's. We also talk about the coachbuilder themselves and why they are so sought after and important. A recent father of two, Ben's collecting looks a tad bit different these days. Still chasing the same things for himself, but two little ones as well, all in good taste. Alright, let's get to it. A long time collector, Rob's passion for watches is evident in the condition driven, heavy hitters he brought along with him. In the company of a true connoisseur, Rob's collection is the definition of history intertwined with craftsmanship and elegance converging with innovation. A seeker of great condition, he's got some of the best examples in his collection and truly some stuff that I may never get to see twice in person. With such a fondness for horology, you can only imagine that this isn't merely about possession or even obsession, but more of an extension of who he is as a friend and a collector. A relentless pursuit to what we call, “buy right”, he's traveled all over to build his collection. Today we're chatting with a friend of mine who's been a collector for as long as he can remember. James Lamdin, founder of Analog/Shift, is no stranger to the watch and car community. Fresh off a sale to Watches of Switzerland, we talk about how he got into collecting from an early age and how things have changed since running a successful business. Not only a collector of the aforementioned, but James is after rare movie posters, vinyls, coffee table books, and just about anything else he can get his hands on. But if there's one thing James has, that's patience, which makes him always collect with a purpose. I mean the guys just getting ready to pick up a multi-year project on a vintage 911 and drive it through the west coast. As James puts it, he's never met a dollar he couldn't spend. So without further adieu, James Lamdin, for Collectors Gene Radio.Analog Shift - https://www.analogshift.com/Watches of Switzerland - https://www.watchesofswitzerland.com/

Joining me today is Editor in Chief of Robb Report, Paul Croughton. Paul reached out to me as a fan of the podcast, which was truly humbling as I've been a fan of Robb Report for quite some time. Without knowing him too well, I figured he had to be a collector. In fact, Paul's been collecting his whole life. His father was a collector and he subsequently caught the bug early on. From action figures and magazines, to vinyls and record decks, Paul's collecting has since evolved into vintage barware and watches. We chat about what it means to collect and curate for himself, but also as Editor in Chief of one of the largest luxury publications around. His vintage barware collection is as extensive as a jigger that plays music as you pour, which you'll all get to hear mid show. Needless to say, Paul's life revolves around luxury things and he's found a way to hone that in on his own collecting. When it comes to double signed watches from the holy trinity, or piece uniques from Cartier, Roni has found a way to differentiate himself amongst all the other collectors out there. He's got a deliberate focus on odd case shapes and double signed dials, especially from defunct retailers. He's been featured in numerous publications from Hodinkee, Revolution, Robb Report, and I'm thrilled to be a part of that list. Hodinkee Radio returns for the second installment of The Collector's Edition With Ben Clymer. Follow along with Hodinkee's founder as he speaks with notable friends and watch enthusiasts about what it means to be a collector. As you may recall, we launched the series last year with pop star Ed Sheeran. In this episode, we are thrilled to sit down with comedian, actor, producer, and serial entrepreneur Kevin Hart. If it seems like Hart is everywhere all the time, that's because he is – from the current "Reality Check" stand-up tour and the big screen in hits like Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and The Secret Life of Pets to television ads for the likes of DraftKings and JPMorgan Chase. On top of that, he also runs a media company called HartBeat Productions. And on top of that – and what brings us here today – he's also a legit watch enthusiast. We caught up with Kevin at Foxwoods Resort Casino in Connecticut, right before he was about to hit the stage for back-to-back "Reality Check" shows. We learned that his love of watches dates to the early days of his career and that over the years Submariners, Daytonas, Pateks, and Richard Milles adorned his wrist. Today, his collecting has evolved to the point where he has a partnership with Audemars Piguet. As a "friend of the brand," Kevin has access to some very special pieces, including the ceramic chronograph he famously leaked to the world and the piece he'll be wearing in the upcoming Netflix movie Lift.Show Notes: 0:27Kevin Hart0:30Ben Clymer0:56A stop on the "Reality Check" tour2:00Audemars Piguet4:57Rolex Submariner 166105:14Rolex Daytona 1165085:40Jacob the Jeweler6:25Richard Mille RM 0299:07Kevin's first Tourbillon: The Royal Oak Concept Tourbillon Chronograph in Rose Gold 26223OR10:51Revealing the Royal Oak Selfwinding Chronograph "50th Anniversary" in Black Ceramic13:28Watch worn in the movie Lift14:05Chadwick Boseman and the AP x Marvel Royal Oak Concept Black Panther Flying Tourbillon17:58Royal Oak Openworked Extra-Thin "40th Anniversary" In Platinum18:46Kevin's car collection20:24Celebrity friends into collecting watches20:48Corey Gamble watch collection

Once a comedy writer, Barry Friedman is one of the those collectors turned dealers stories that we love to hear about. What's more fascinating, is that he's really the only person dealing strictly in one category, which is antique Indian trade and camp blankets. This is one of those things where you have definitely seen them in passing, but you may not have known exactly what you were looking at. One of the original makers, Pendleton, has even recreated some of them to this day. Barry has found a healthy balance between collecting these for himself and making it his business. In fact, he's Ralph Lauren's go-to when it comes to supplying these for his personal ranch in Colorado as well as his Double RL stores around the world. If you've ever had the chance to go into a Double RL store and seen these blankets, well, that's Barry's doing. Barry also was contacted recently to supply all the blankets for a huge Hollywood movie starring some of the biggest names in the industry. He's truly an expert in this stuff, so much so that he's a consultant for Pendleton, whose the only surviving manufacturer for these products. He knows more about this stuff than you would think is even possible.
