Betsi Flint, a 6-time AVP Champion, played at Loyola Marymount University (LMU) for both indoor and beach volleyball. She is a 2-time AVCA All-American in beach and still holds indoor records in career aces and digs. In Betsi's rookie AVP Season in 2015, she and Kelly Kolinske were the youngest team at the time to take home an AVP Championship. Betsi was voted the AVP Newcomer of the Year. Betsi also plays on the FIVB and has earned Gold in China and Silver Medals in Canada and Australia.Betsi's favorite career memory was winning AVP Hermosa in 2018 with Emily Day; she grew up watching this event, and in her first time playing at AVP Hermosa, she won in front of her friends and family. Her most defining moment, however, was winning AVP Cincinnati in her first year out of college. It was then that she realized she could pursue becoming a professional beach volleyball player full-time. When Betsi isn't playing volleyball, she is spending time with her husband Chase and their daughter Cora or meal prepping. One interesting fact about Betsi is that she was born and raised in a small town in South Dakota, where she fell in love with sports. She later moved to Phoenix, AZ, with her family. Well there were a few to choose from but Betsi was the first. A lovely black alpaca with a beautiful dark fawn cria. 8.5 kg is a good size and Lena, our lastest arrival has made a strong entry to the valley and the world. Born near the lake - too near to be left there - I moved her up to a broader path with less danger while she found her feet and the milk-bar. Both baby and mum are doing well and she has been visited by all of the aunties to welcome her to the herd. Prydwen was next to give birth with a male cria just over 7kg and a gorgeous white-white with some fawn colouring around the top of his head - plenty of crimp in the neck fleece too. It will be nice to see how he develops. So far, the others are moving towards giving birth but slowly. Rhoslyn is even more grumpy and keeping herself at a little distance, so maybe... I will let you know Drop me a line (steve@alpacatribe.com) if you have any cria watch stories or arrivals to share.

Before entering politics, Chris Shays served in the Peace Corps in Fiji along with his wife Betsi from 1968 to 1970. At the age of 29, he ran and won a seat in the Connecticut House of Representatives as a Republican in 1975. Twelve years later, he won a seat in Congress, where he represented the 4th congressional district for 21 years, from 1987 through 2008. When he lost his seat in 2008, he was last Republican serving in any state in New England. In this episode, Congressman Shays shares some amazing stories from his time with the Peace Corps in Fiji. He also talks about the time he spent a week in jail as a congressman as a result of protesting judicial corruption, and about the time he stayed overnight in the notorious Cabrini Green housing projects in Chicago to understand the reality there before a Congressional hearing. He ends the interview by sharing his thoughts on the current state of our politics.
In this episode you will hear about the arrival of our first two cria this year and the names we chose for them. Angharad daughter of Betsi weighed in at 8 kg and is strong and doing well. Her mother, Betsi still grumbles and calls the cria away whenever she sees me (normal for her) but is starting to settle more quickly than previous occasions. Amelia broke her streak of boys by giving birth to her first daughter. Beautifully white and 6.5 kg for which I am sure Amelia as a smaller, more compact alpaca was very grateful. The preparation pays off and even though you are waiting, the alpacas are not in a hurry and the cria will arrive when they are ready. I hope your birthing season goes well and I will let you know more news next time. Thanks for being here and please do share the podcast with someone you know who you think will enjoy it too. SANDCAST: Beach Volleyball with Tri Bourne and Travis Mewhirter
Maybe Emily Day should just come on SANDCAST: Beach Volleyball with Tri Bourne and Travis Mewhirter, every week. The first time she hopped on, she did so with her partner, Betsi Flint, on the first on-site podcast, just behind an outside court at AVP San Francisco. Two days later, her and Flint were the last team standing, beating Geena Urango and Caitlin Ledoux in the finals, 21-17, 16-21, 15-7, marking their first win as a team. “We should do that more often,” she said, and whether she was talking about coming on the podcast or winning, either would have sufficed. In the next AVP, on Lake Sammamish in Seattle, her and Flint won again, no good luck podcast necessary, as they did in Haiyang, China, two weeks later. Then again, when she came back on SANDCAST for her second appearance, she left the studio and went straight to the podium again, returning home from a three-star in Sydney with a silver medal around her neck. “We tend to have that effect,” Bourne joked. In reality, of course, it is the ever-so-humble Day who has that effect on her own career. She always has. She’s won with virtually everyone she’s played with, on virtually every tour she’s played. Doesn’t matter if it’s the old-school Wide Open series with Heather McGuire or a NORCECA with Summer Ross or Whitney Pavlik or an AVP with Jen Kessy or the Manhattan Beach Open with Brittany Hochevar or internationally with Flint. She’ll win split-blocking or full-time blocking. She’ll win with loud partners and quiet partners and goofy partners and intensely competitive partners. And it is that ability to win, with personalities and skill sets of any shape or size, that recently helped land Day in the Loyola Marymount Hall of Fame. “I was honored,” she said. “Absolutely shocked. It was such a cool weekend, just felt a part of LMU athletics.” It’s no wonder that she still does. Though she finished competing for the Lions in 2008, her team is still very much an LMU one. Her partner, Flint, is in her fourth year as an assistant coach for the Lions after a beach career in which she was twice named All-American. When the college season ends, they’ll be helped by John Mayer, currently the head beach coach for LMU. As it stands right now, Team LMU is second in the world in the push for the Tokyo Olympics, behind only Brazilians Rebecca Cavalcanti and Ana Patricia Silva. This will be Day’s second attempt to qualify for an Olympic Games. The first was a shot at Rio de Janiero in 2016 with Kessy. They finished as the first team out, U.S. No. 3. “It was tough,” she said. “We had chances and opportunities but of course you always look back and think ‘If we would have done better in this one then our draw would have been better for this one. It’s a grind. It was a grind. A roller coaster.” Now it’s onto grind No. 2, roller coaster No. 2. “We just can’t let the highs get too high and the lows get too low,” she said. “I think something that Betsi and I have done well is – you go from winning San Francisco to a four-star in Poland and nobody cares that you won in San Francisco. The highs and the lows, you gotta stay even-keeled. You’re going to get good draws, and you’re going to get bad draws. It’s all about what you do with what you have in front of you.”

Guest's Name: Betsi Hill from https://betsiworld.com/ How do you get clarity and know that what you want to do is the right thing and then how do you amplify it out to your right audience? Access the show notes at https://briandixon.com/clarity09/ Learn more about Brian's coaching at https://briandixon.com/coaching (Betsi wants to help those people in the 20 to 65 range that don't think that they have enough ability to enjoy freedom - just have to have a plan. They are semi nomads and says that if they can do it, anyone else can) Brian's answer: I love that, well the name of the book, Start with your people. Same answer. Tell me about your people. Who do you feel like you're here to serve? Who is somebody that you feel like you can make a difference for? Need to narrow down the audience. Think of a target on a bull's eye. If you take that dart and throw it, you might not hit the bull's eye, you might not get the 50 points, but maybe you'll get the 20 or 30 points. But if you have no dart board at all, you'll never get any points. You have this 40 year span of people you want to serve. I would really focus in on one person. Perhaps it is someone who is 40 years old and not enjoying their job, has freelance writing skills, etc. and she started googling. That's where she meets Betsi Brian's main points:Hone in on the avator. Betsi mentioned Amplify, but for Brian Amplify is actually an acronym - Audience, Message, and Product. Have to start with your audience. Imagine that this person just turned 40 which is a milestone birthday and it get her thinking about what and where she wants to be in her life. Be very specific about who she is….where does she work, etc. It might be someone you know or a combination of people. Once you're clear on her, then you get to know what questions she is asking. Your content is just answering her questions. If you're not writing for a specific person, then you're just writing randomly or for yourself. This is totally fine. We all have hobbies like throwing a baseball that you don't need to have a coach, but if you want to make a living from it, you have to have a professional mindset. You have to decide it is not for you, but instead for your reader. Send an email to your list to ask what people are struggling with. Subject line - One question for you. Real short email, hey it's Betsi. Where are you struggling the most right now? Hit reply and let me know. You could also quantify it, life direction or location freedom. Brian recommends keeping it open if this is the first time it is sent. The email subscribers when they reply are telling you 2 things - 1. Where they are stuck and 2. How they see you. People will only tell you about their problems if they feel you can help them with a solution or you can empathize with them. You can also do something similar on your facebook page, but it would need more clarity since they're not on your email list. I'm working on my blog or revamping my website - what would you love to learn. People may write you asking about what type of RV or how do I make money on the road, etc. What is obvious to you is magic to other people. They've paid attention to you. Make a list of all the questions from email and facebook. Put it all together for a good plan.

SANDCAST: Beach Volleyball with Tri Bourne and Travis Mewhirter
It was a look that featured a strange blend of joy and exhaustion, one athletes know all too well. Emily Day and Betsi Flint had just wrapped up their first day at AVP San Francisco, playing the maximum number of sets (six), two of those going into extra points. Worse yet, they had lost their second match of the day, relegating them to the contender’s bracket, portending a long grinder of a road ahead if they were to make the finals in San Francisco and defend the Seattle title they earned two weeks before. And oh, they were only getting started. Before they would cap the weekend with another AVP title in San Francisco, finishing with a 21-17, 16-21, 15-7 win over Geena Urango and Caitlin Ledoux, before they would play 16 sets in three days, before they would win their second title in as many AVPs, they had a plane to catch. “We went straight from Seattle,” said Flint, who alongside Day beat April Ross and Ledoux in the finals 19-21, 21-19, 18-16, “just jumped in the lake and hopped on a plane to Poland, where we had to qualify on Wednesday.” And they did, winning both matches, the second, of course, going to three. They “came out flat,” Flint said, in the main draw, losing to Agatha and Duda in the first match and another pair of Brazilians, Josemari Alves and Liliane Maestrini in the second. Not that they had much time to wallow and recover, for it was straight to San Francisco. “We definitely have to stay hydrated,” Day said. “That flight to Poland was pretty rough. I may have cramped in the airport changing room. But that’s what we want to do. We want to play every weekend and so we’re out there to play every weekend. We’ll do whatever.” So they do what every over-traveled, underslept, exhausted athlete does: They convinced themselves they were fine. “It’s interesting because you think you feel ok,” Day said. “You talk yourself into it, like ‘I feel good, blah blah blah, I came off a win,’ then you get on the court and it’s like ‘Oh, God, don’t feel as good as I thought.’ But mentally we know that every team is good on the world stage so we just need to take it point by point, but winning Seattle gave us confidence. We actually had a huge comeback to qualify for Poland. We might have been down 8-2 in Poland and we came back to win 15-12. Not sure if that’s ever going to happen again but we took it and ran with it.” Evidently so. They took it and ran with it all the way back to San Francisco, coming back – again – in the contender’s bracket, rallying from a first-set loss to Lara Dykstra and Sheila Shaw to win 20-22, 23-2, 15-12. A win and a forfeit later, they were in the semifinals, rematched with the team that put them in the contender’s in the first place: Brittany Howard and Kelly Reeves. They won, 21-14, 21-13. A finals rematch with Ledoux awaited, and again, it went – and how could it not? – to three sets, where Day and Flint prevailed, 15-7. Three weeks, three tournaments, 16 matches, 37 sets, two AVP wins, one FIVB qualification. Standard month for Day and Flint. “Qualifying is an awesome accomplishment and not something we ever take for granted,” Day said. But it’s pretty special winning an AVP and getting the champagne, family and friends. Just trying to win.”
“By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.” –Benjamin Franklin Host Jody Mayberry and Great Escape Publishing Director, Lori Allen, introduce us to Betsi Hill. Lori shares her insight into Betsi… “People like Betsi are attracted to travel writing because that’s what drives them. Betsi loves the idea of having fun, living life, loving what she does and not being bogged down with commutes and other ordinary career issues.” Betsi’s quest for fun in her life has brought her success as a freelance writer, blogger and now as an editor-in-chief of a new publication. A key component of her success has been a result of attending trade shows and events. “As a travel writer, blogger and a new editor-in-chief of a start-up magazine, I go to trade shows, media marketplaces and other specialized shows with a three-pronged approach,” explains Betsi. “I’m interested in meeting people for the possibility of writing about a destination, garnering that precious perk called free travel, and finding out destinations and products that we could potentially review in the magazine I’m editing.” Betsi shares with us how she maximizes the benefits of the trade shows and media marketplace events she travels by… …Researching the destinations and products in advance …Developing a 30-second elevator pitch that presents the “who, what and why” every destination wants to know …Maintaining a press or media kit that showcases her work and illustrates how her work can benefit brands and destinations Betsi also shares how she follows up after an event and what has helped her achieve an 80% success rate of working with the contacts she’s developed. If you’re interested in learning more about becoming a travel writer or a photographer, Lori suggests starting with the Ultimate Travel Writer’s Program to build a strong foundation then sign up for a live event to build on that foundation.
