This 80s classic solidified Eddie Murphy as a superstar. Beverly Hills Cop was the top-grossing film of 1984 and earned an Oscar nomination for its screenplay. What became one of AFI's Top 100 comedies almost turned into a very different film with Sylvester Stallone, more action, and less humor. Directed by Martin Brest, the film introduced Axel Foley, a street-smart Detroit cop who investigates a murder in Beverly Hills. With its perfect mix of humor, action, and Murphy's charm, the film reshaped the action-comedy genre. Join Tim Williams and returning guest co-host, Chris McMichen, as they dive into Beverly Hills Cop on this episode of the 80s Flick Flashback Podcast. Here are some additional behind-the-scenes trivia we were unable to cover in this episode: Throughout the production, the screenplay underwent constant revisions, which sometimes resulted in actors receiving their lines just before they were expected to deliver them. This posed a challenge for actor Stephen Elliott, who was caught holding a rolled-up script while portraying Police Chief Hubbard. Fortunately, the director believed this detail enhanced his performance, so Elliott is seen holding those script pages in the film. The Beverly Hills Police Department uses a "satellite tracking system" to locate Foley and Rosewood. Although this system was fictional when the story was created, it later inspired the development of modern satellite technology, including the Global Positioning System (GPS). The mansion used in the final shootout between Foley and Maitland is the same mansion seen in the final shootout between Matrix and Arius in "Commando" (1985). Coincidentally, both Foley and Matrix were trying to rescue somebody named Jenny in that mansion in their respective films.Sources:Wikipedia, IMDB, https://www.cracked.com/article_44671_40-trivia-tidbits-about-beverly-hills-cop-on-its-40th-anniversary.htmlhttps://www.mentalfloss.com/article/60484/15-things-you-may-not-have-known-about-beverly-hills-copSome sections were composed or edited by ChatGPT We'd love to hear your thoughts on our podcast! According to the Associated Press, Jamie Foxx required stitches after being struck in the face with a glass while celebrating his birthday at Mr. Chow, a popular restaurant in Beverly Hills. A representative for the actor told the Los Angeles Times that someone from another table threw a glass that hit Foxx in the mouth during the Friday night incident. The Beverly Hills Police Department responded to a report of an assault with a deadly weapon around 10 p.m. but later determined it was unfounded. The department described the event as a physical altercation between parties. No arrests were made. In an Instagram post on Sunday, Foxx appeared to reference the incident, writing, “The devil is busy … but I'm too blessed to be stressed.” Foxx, who won an Oscar for portraying Ray Charles in “Ray” (2004), turned 57 that day. June 7, 1989. Beverly Hills, California. 23-year old Adam Hecht, the son of a famous Hollywood film producer, is seen driving away from his apartment in a rental car, but he never returns and the vehicle is found abandoned weeks later. After Adam goes missing, Tony is discovered to be residing in his apartment, but when he is investigated by police, they are unable to find any evidence that he was involved in Adam's disappearance. The media frenzy continued in the aftermath of Harold Smith's fatal interaction with police at the Harvey Apartments. Beverly Hills Police requested the gun Harold Smith used to commit suicide to be turned over to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Crime Labratory for further testing. After announcing they had a "preliminary ballistics match" to the weapon that killed Ronni Chasen, Beverly Hills Police officially closed the case. In Episode 4, we discuss questions about the ballistics analysis in the case, bold statements made by the Beverly Hills Police Department, and how investigators determined Ronni Chasen was killed in a 'robbery gone bad'.
Do not miss the first half of this conversation with Gary. The Protectors® Podcast welcomes Gary Edgington, author of OUTSIDE THE WIRE. From Gary: I've been chasing the “bad-guys” in one way or another since 1976. I guess it's in my blood. My dad was a cop too. Tragically, he was killed in the line of duty in 1979 by a knife wielding lunatic. He got one shot into the guy, but it wasn't enough. I was in the third week of the LA Sheriff's Academy when that happened. After graduation, I worked for several local agencies including the Manhattan Beach Police Department, the Beverly Hills Police Department, and the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office. Then in 1994, I was appointed a Special Agent with the California Department of Justice. I worked major narcotics cases, organized crime, unsolved homicide, and internal affairs. Collateral with these assignments I was a firearms and tactics instructor with the LA office. From 1999 to 2008, I was a member of the FBI's “Joint Terrorism Task Force” in Los Angeles. After 9/11, I was promoted to Task Force Commander and took command of a multi-agency counter-terrorism task force based in Southern California for the California Department of Justice. I retired in 2008 from DOJ and deployed to Iraq as an embedded counter-terrorism/organized crime subject matter expert working counter-IED with the US Army. https://garyedgingtonauthor.com/books/outside-the-wire/This episode brought to you by RANGER POINT PRECISIONhttps://www.rangerpointprecision.com/Support the showMake sure to check out Jason on IG @drjasonpiccoloJason's book, UNWAVERING is out now!

Is this a credible lawsuit? Beverly Hills Police targeted Black people with harassment and arrest for low-level or nonexistent violations in an effort to keep them away from Rodeo Drive, according to a class-action racial discrimination lawsuit filed in California Superior Court Monday by civil rights attorneys Ben Crump and Bradley Gage. The complaint centers on the Beverly Hills Police Department's “Operation Safe Streets,” a campaign to address safety on the city's famed luxury shopping destination of Rodeo Drive. The suit claims that between March 2020 and July 2021, the task force made 106 arrests — 105 of whom were of Black people. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

After we definitely reviewed the first movie in our 100th episode, we knew we'd have to come back and see what Eddie Murphy's classic character had in store for us next. Beverly Hills Cop II, released May 20th in 1987, has some of what you loved about the first film. Murphy himself considers it to be "the most successful mediocre movie of all time". We're both pretty split on it but there's one big thing we agree on: that theme tune is way too catchy. Law360 has long been an excellent resource in covering the news when it comes to legal issues. In January, they expanded to also begin looking internally at the legal industry and the business of law. Rachel Travers, Law360 Vice-President, and General Manager joins us to talk about the recent launch of Law360 Pulse. This news coverage of large and mid-sized law firms, in-house corporate counsel happenings, as well as regional coverage of the legal industry is giving many of the established news outlets some new competition. Travers mentions that Law360 Pulse will also release additional industry rankings as well as comprehensive industry surveys. In addition, the integration of Law360 Pulse along with Lexis+ will create unique analytics tools by connecting research and news resources. Information Inspirations We mentioned Coca-Cola's memo to their outside law firms last week, but Bob Ambrogi sat down with Coke's GC, Bradley Gayton for a LawNext Podcast interview to dive deep into the reasoning for the memo and how Gayton's own experiences lead him to press his law firms, and even his own department to push for more diversity. Three decades ago, a family disintegrated. Two brothers committed the ultimate crime – shooting their parents to death in cold blood. The brothers were Lyle and Erik Menendez and their story has captivated people for thirty years because of the revelations that would play out over the course of the murder investigation and the two trials that followed. Before the brothers appeared before a judge, the Beverly Hills Police Department had to do their investigation. Episode One of Murder and the Menendez Brothers: A Court TV Mystery looks at that investigation and the little things it took for the brothers to avoid suspicion…at least for a little while. This week Axel Foley takes us to Wonder World, the second most magical theme park in all of California, in the third installment of the Beverly Hills Cop franchise. The story begins back in Detroit when a bust gone wrong ends up with Axel’s captain being killed in the line of duty. The trail to find the killer leads to California and Axel wastes no time getting back to the land of sun and fun. Once there, Axel learns who the killer is and teams back up with Billy Rosewood to take down a counterfeiting ring operating at the amusement park right under Uncle Dave’s nose. With a little help from the lovely Janice and the always entertaining Serge, Axel is able to get the bad guys and save the day. Why did they try to make this a toned down version of the previous two movies? Why didn’t Axel know that Taggert retired? How doesn’t everyone in the Beverly Hills Police Department know who Axel is? Shouldn’t he be really famous after his actions in the previous two films? What happened to all the glamour and glitz of Beverly Hills? Where can I get an Annihilator 2000? This is the third best of the Beverly Hills Cop movies but it is still worth a watch if you have a few hours to kill. Thank you for all of the love you continue to show us. Please rate and review the podcast wherever you get it and if you like the show, share it with your friends. Have a great week.

Both badass dudes had accomplished way more at age 25 than Lorraine and Sarah may ever hope to!
