In episode 282 of The Just Checking In Podcast we checked in with Holly Brencher. Holly is a journalist and currently works as an AI Expansion Reporter at Newsquest. We came across Holly through a very personal article she wrote on Newsquest about the death of her brother Billy, who tragically took his own life 6th November 2024. The article was called a ‘Tribute to Welling's Billy Payne - love, struggle and advocacy'. In this episode we discuss how Holly got into journalism, through a chance workshop she saw on how to get into the industry after initially picking courses on script writing, despite her anxiety about going to university altogether. We then discuss the three year journalism degree she did at News Associates, based in Twickenham and landing the job she is in now. For industry issues, we discuss work-life balance and social class. For Holly's mental health, we discuss her experience of anxiety from an early age and her difficulties with it when she entered an all-girls school in secondary school. This included severe panic attacks which took her out of school for a year and a half. We then discuss the life and death of her brother Billy, who is her half-brother biologically. On that aforementioned day in November 2024, Holly and her mum were given the news that Billy had taken his own life in prison. This is the first major grief Holly has gone through and she has been trying to process the news in the months following his death. There has been an inquest into Billy's death which is still ongoing at time of recording and hopefully once this has been completed, Holly and her family can have closure. As always, #itsokaytovent You can read Holly's article in full here: https://www.newsshopper.co.uk/news/24748582.tribute-wellings-billy-payne---love-struggle-advocacy/ Support Us: Patreon: www.patreon.com/venthelpuk GoFundMe: www.gofundme.com/f/help-vent-supp…ir-mental-health Merchandise: www.redbubble.com/people/VentUK/shop Music: @patawawa - Strange: www.youtube.com/watch?v=d70wfeJSEvk TRIGGER WARNING: this podcast contains a deep discussion about grief, loss and suicide, which some listeners may find upsetting or distressing, so please listen with caution.

This week we are delving into one of the greats of Southern Rock.  Well, they are southern rock if you count southern California.  Little Feat took its name from a comment Frank Zappa made to his band member Lowell George regarding his having little feet. George would become a founder and driving force behind Little Feat, providing guitar and vocals.  Other members were Paul Barrere on guitar and vocals, Sam Clayton on percussion and vocals, Kenny Gradney on bass, Richie Hayward on drums and vocals, and Bill Payne on keyboards and vocals.Feats Don't Fail Me Now is the band's fourth studio album, and it went to number 36 on the US Top LP's chart.  It is hard to go wrong when, in addition to the regular band members you have the Tower of Power on horns, and backing vocals from Emmylou Harris and Bonnie Raitt.  The album was recorded at Blue Seas Recording Studio in Maryland, and it provided two advantages.  First, it had just opened and needed a band for their "shakedown cruise," letting Little Feat record on the cheap.  Second, it was far away from their home base in Los Angeles, which kept Lowell George away from many familiar temptions of drugs and women. While Lowell George would soon begin to deteriorate in health (he died of a heart attack in 1979), this album shows him and his band at the height of their artistic prowess.  The surviving members of Little Feat would regroup in 1987, and the band continues to perform today.Wayne takes us through this little feat of southen rock for this week's podcast. Feats Don't Fail Me NowThe title track received significant airplay on FM radio and it leads off side two of the album.  That driving bass line and funky drumbeat is sometimes called Country Funk Boogie.  The message of the song is one of perseverance and determination to get back the girl the singer loves.Oh AtlantaIf you were living in the metro-Atlanta area in the 70's or 80's, you definitely are familiar with this song.  Billy Payne takes lead vocal duties on this track, and it features Bonnie Raitt and Emmylou Harris on backing vocals.  "Well, you can drop me off on Peachtree, I got to feel that Georgia sun.  And the women there in Atlanta, they make you awfully glad you come."Spanish MoonThis track was written by Lowell George and features the Tower of Power horn section.  This is a deeper cut, but it has a latin groove while maintaining both a bluesy and funky sound.  The origin of the song is a dream George had of a dangerous nightclub in New Orleans called the Spanish Moon.Rock and Roll DoctorThe song considered the hit off the album is an anthem to the healing power of music.  "Two degress in bebop, a PhD in swing, he's a master of rhythm, he's a rock and roll king."   ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Main theme from the motion picture “Together Brothers”The Love Unlimited Orchestra provided this title track to STAFF PICKS:Radar Love by Golden EarringLynch's starts our staff picks this week with a Dutch rock band originally formed in 1961.  Lead vocalist Barry Hay and guitarist George Kooymans wrote this single that reached number 13 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart.  The lyrics describe a man driving a long way to be with his love, and communicating with her through a mystical bond he calls "radar love."Keep on Smilin' by Wet WillieBruce features the title track from Wet Willie's third studio album.  It is their biggest hit, reaching number 10 on the Billboard Hot 100.  The song itself is rather stoic, encouraging the listener to keep smiling through the difficulties and pain of life. The Night Chicago Died by Paper LaceRob's staff pick is a story telling song that topped the US chart for one week in 1974.  The lyrics describe a shoot-out between the Chicago Police and Al Capone's gangsters, and worries from the wife of a police officer that her husband wouldn't make it home.  The song ends on a positive note when her husband walks through the door.Beach Baby by The First ClassWayne brings us a British band made up of all session players.  They call themselves "the first class" because they considered themselves to be a kind of supergroup of the UK music session set.  This song would be a one-hit wonder, reaching number 4 in the US, but other singles would not see the same level of success. NOVELTY TRACK:Rub It In by Billy "Crash" CraddockThis novelty song hit the top of the country charts.  It may be more familiar as the jingle from Glade air fresheners, where they sing, "plug it in." Little Feat's story is one of longevity, an incredible catalogue of tunes, and excellent musicianship. The latest incarnation of the band, might be the closest we've heard since the band was formed back in 1969 by Lowell George, Billy Payne, Richie Hayward and Roy Estrada. The current line up is on tour most of the spring well into the summer, and they're releasing an album full of blues covers and a few originals entitled Sam's Place featuring percussionist turned vocalist Sam Clayton May 17th. The murders of Billy Payne and Billie Jean Hayworth were incredibly senseless. The case would end up being dubbed "The Facebook Murders" because of an ongoing feud between the victims and a woman named Jenelle Potter who had moved to their small town years earlier. Strangely enough, all three had been part of the same friend group at one time, but unreciprocated romantic feelings would tear the friend group apart. The case would involve catfishing, manipulation, Facebook.... and even the CIA.Thank you to the astounding David White for research assistance ReferencesDiaz, Joseph, and Alexa Valiente. 2015. I’ll Eat It Here”. Jenelle Potter In a small town in Eastern Tennessee, Jenelle Potter was a sweet but naïve girl who lead a sheltered life thanks to her overprotective parents. However underneath that childlike, “innocent” exterior, lay a calculated and manipulating woman. Victims, Billie Jean Hayworth and Billy Payne were at home on January 31, 2012 when they were mercilessly killed. Billy was shot in the head and his throat had been slashed. His partner, Billie Jean was killed with her infant child still in her arms, the child was left unharmed. But the reason for the killings were a little more baffling. Jenelle and Billy were once good friends. Billy’s sister Tracy took pity on the loner Jenelle and introduced her to Billy whi in turn introduced Jenelle to Jamie Curd, his cousin. Jenelle and Jamie ended up dating, but then things began to get strange. 4. Chris Dean To everyone he spoke with, Chris Marquis was a grown man with a wife and kids. He operated a buy and sell shop online from his Fair Haven, Vermont home selling CB radio equipment to enthusiasts. The problem was that Chris Marquis was only a 17-year old kid living with his mom and worse, he was defrauding customers by taking their money and not holding up his side of the deal. It was in one transaction police believe he encountered 35-year old trucker, Chris Dean from Pierceton, Indiana. The burly 6-foot tall driver is described by people who knew him as good humored and helpful. 3. J.R. Robinson John “J.R.” Robinson was known around his Kansas City, Missouri neighborhood as a personable man with a “winning smile.” He was a doting father who made it a point to attend his children’s soccer game and band activities. He was a successful businessman too, always talking about new ventures and even helped found a nearby Presbyterian Church. But behind the all-American façade was a sinister man that got off on BDSM, torture, kidnapping and murder. 2. Christian Grotheer Christian Grotheer of Germany spent hours and hours online. Using the nicknames “Rosenboy0207” and “Riddick300,” he perpetually flirted and chatted with women, charming them with love poems and pictures. For him, the Internet was a fantastic way to meet people. It made it easy to strike up a conversation and he said that almost everyone in the conversation were looking for “sexual contact.” Christian admits he built up to 300 contacts and have met more than 100 women in person. This was his life – his family, But eventually he went too far. 1. Phillip Markoff Phillip Markoff led a mysterious double life. In one, he was a successful medical student studying at the Boston School of Medicine and engaged to his college sweetheart, Megan McAllister. But in the other, he also frequented casinos, gaining a considerable debt of over $130,000. So there were 5 ONLINE ENCOUNTERS THAT TURNED DEADLY Death by social media is a scary thought. As our world becomes more connected online, it’s not hard to believe that these crimes will only grow more and more common.

Seth and Rob start the show by hinting at exciting podcast developments which they discuss in more depth during the post-interview portion of the episode. The duo sat down with with founding member and frontman of Leftover Salmon Vince Herman in honor of the much anticipated Leftover Salmon’s acoustic fall tour and their chat provides the bulk of this episode. The cozy confines of the Hunt House in Marietta, Georgia provide an ideal setting as Herman talks about how his eclectic musical taste grew out of his teenage experiences at the weeks-long multiple genre annual musician-interactive-heavy Augusta Heritage Festival in Elkins, West Virginia. Herman ultimately moved from a chilly West Virginia attic to the acoustic music promised land of Colorado and he came across a notice for a Left-Hand String Band show literally upon arrival. Left-Hand String Band and Herman’s eventual own band Salmon Heads would eventually give birth to Leftover Salmon. Vince talks about mandolin-toting football moves with David Grisman, the mythology of Peter Rowan, how having Jeff Sipe and Billy Payne in tow impacted LoS, how Waylon Jennings always hated country music and he even tells a harrowing David Allen Coe story. We learn how Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and David Bromberg were the main inspirations for the initial Leftover Salmon ethos, and how they, with John Bell recorded (in one take) a song Bromberg had taught Vince. We learn about the similarities between founding member Mark Vann and the banjo player who replaced him Andy Thorn and what LoS did the time Neil Young wandered onto their stage. A discussion about the tour with his son Silas which brought him to Hunt House ensues and we find out that this “Herman Original” was initially pretty much compelled by friends to pursue music, and how Georgia music-lovers had been impressed by him. Herman also discusses how Ralph Roddenbery specifically, and the Metro Atlanta music scene in general provided many highlights of his tour with his son. This podcast also once again offers the genesis of yet another eventual JamCruise activity, “Chemical Experiments with Mr. Wizard,” and Herman gives some hints toward the true significance of Mayor McCheese. Then a discussion about parallel universes serves as an ideal prelude to an, at times heavy discussion about Col. Bruce Hampton and his final performance. wTnS is Produced by Rob Turner and Engineered by Josh Thane of Wonder Dog Sounds Studio.
