Judy Walker of the Mecklenburg Audubon Society shares how people have recently been coming into the activity of bird watching. She adds to Carolina Outdoor host, Bill Bartee's list of famed people with Amy Tan, author of the Backyard Bird Chronicles & the character James Bond was named for a friend of Ian Fleming. Backyard watching is how many people begin in the activity of birdwatching. There is nothing that should hold someone back, except time, in becoming a birder. Birdwatching is a "gateway to the outdoors."
Host Bill Bartee welcomes longtime contributor to the Carolina Outdoors, Judy Walker. Walker has been watching birds as a kid. However, it was in the 1980s when a female cardinal should up in her window. This became her "spark bird" & began her interest in ornithology. She shares her thoughts on the local club history to the changes in technology, & the continuing growth of members of the Mecklenburg Audubon Society.
Eithne Dodd speaks to Vinny Hyland who spotted an African Hoopoe in Kerry last week and Ed Carty, field ornithologist, explains why so many have arrived on Irish southern shores recently.
This free app can name birds just from their song or a quick photo. Birdwatchers, you're gonna want this.
There are many excellent places in which enthusiasts can observe birds across the country, though the standard of the actual facilities, interpretive features, viewing areas and access routes at these locations can vary greatly. Jim, Richard and Niall discuss the good, the bad and the ugly of Irish birding facilities.
Birdwatching has become a popular pastime. Birdwatchers are convinced that birds have intrinsic value and that protecting them is essential. However, enthusiasm doesn't always lead to social consensus. Elected officials answer to voters, and corporate executives answer to shareholders. University of Utah ornithologist Cagan Sekercioglu says that to influence policymakers, it's crucial to “offer credible research showing that healthy bird populations are essential to human welfare.”

Roughly a quarter of chocolate sales in the US and the UK occur around the holidays at the end of the year. And if you are listening to this podcast, you are statistically almost certain to be participating. What does that have to do with birds? Well, like coffee before it, chocolate now comes in a bird friendly version. It's the subject of a recent article in Birdwatcher's Digest by Bryony Angell a Washington based birder and writer on birding culture. She joins us to talk about what that certification means for birds and chocolate-lovers alike. Also, congratulations to the full slate of 2024 ABA Awards recipients and thanks for all you do for the birding community. Subscribe to the podcast at Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts and please leave a rating or a review if you are so inclined! We appreciate it! And don't forget to give to the ABA's End of Year Appeal! Thanks!
Maygen & The Birdwatcher's music is Americana that isn't afraid to embrace eclecticism but is also firmly rooted in folk and country. To achieve their rich, full sound, the band fills out the sonic details with an all-star band led by Noah Neumann's baritone vocals and Singer-Songwriter Maygen Lacey, which has garnered them critical and public acclaim. Their latest EP Leap Year (Out NOW) is a refreshing yet contemplative collection of songs that Maygen & The Birdwatcher have had in their hearts for the past year and a half. Essential for the artists to find a comfortable place to record these deeper, more serious tracks – they found that creative space in the dead of winter, in the warm studio of Real-Phonic Records in the small town of Cleveland, Minnesota. A prolific artist, and guitar maestro himself, Erik Koskinen recorded and masterfully engineered the project. Join us as we talk about the uniqueness of recording in Winter, the genesis of the band. how Maygen and Noah met, the sudden success of the 'Moonshine' album & more. Canada's environment sector is overwhelmingly white. But our columnist Chúk Odenigbo says every non-profit has a responsibility to make sure everyone, regardless of race, feels at home in the outdoors. He tells us about a course he's been teaching to environmental NGOs to help them be more inclusive in their work and their workplace. Then, we hear how Canada's parliament is vowing to study environmental racism, and how one organization is improving Black Nova Scotians' connection to the land.

Host Suzy speaks with Sandra Morocho (Birdwatchers of Quijos Valley, Ecuador) and Michaela Leeb (Swarovski Optik). Sandra lives in the cloud forest on the eastern slopes of the Andes in Ecuador. In 2014 she won a pair of binoculars in the Digiscoper of the Year competition run by Swarovski. Using the binoculars stoked Sandra's enthusiasm for sharing views of the local birds with her friends. From there, Sandra's engagement with the wider community led to an initiative with local leaders to promote eco-tourism alongside conservation efforts in the cloud forest in the Quijos Valley. Michaela tells us of the part Swarovski plays in supporting conservation efforts around the world. We also hear how Sandra and Michaela would spend a fantasy birding day. It's been quite a stir for the Minnesota progressive folk-rock-country sextet Maygen & The Birdwatcher. In late 2021 they released their debut full-length album, Moonshine – (which Americana UK wrote is “stunning”) – earning them Midwest Country Music Awards for Album of the Year and Americana Artist of the Year) and landed opportunities to join festival stages with bands like Old Crow Medicine Show, Paul Cauthen, Grace Potter, and The Ozark Mountain Daredevils. They continued the momentum in late 2022, releasing Moonshine's companion EP, with the “lively and charming” (Adventures in Americana) Bootleggin' At The Flower Shoppe which took home a 2nd round of wins for Album of the Year and Americana Artist of the Year at the Midwest Country Music Organization's annual awards show. The mood-boosting Americana band adventurously blurs the sounds of country, bluegrass, folk, and blues. Lead singers Maygen Lacey, and Noah Neumann intentionally work to draw on their vastly different musical influences and vocal styles to bring a fresh and unexpected mix of songs to light. From beauty to grit, sadness to silliness, the common thread is that this crew loves music, and playing it together, and it shows.
Actress Camille Sullivan has acquired a boatload of awards and nominations over the course of her career for her work in an array of dramatic projects like Intelligence, Hunter Hunter, The Birdwatcher, and The Disappearance, but it's her work in a top-rated comedy series that's currently garnering her mad love from critics, fans, industry insiders, and the fine people of TikTok. The series in question is Shoresy, a spin-off of Jared Keeso and Jacob Tierney's beloved comedy series, Letterkenny. Shoresy – which recently finished airing its third season and is lacing up for a fourth – follows the foul-mouthed, chirp-serving, mother-loving, fan favourite character from Letterkenny named Shoresy as he joins the Sudbury Bulldogs in a quest to never lose again. Camille is Laura Mohr, a reporter who covers the Bulldogs as part of her beat. Shoresy lights up like a Christmas tree whenever he lays eyes on Laura. It's adorable how the normally shit-talking Shoresy is so sweet and earnest during these interactions, and it's so much fun to watch Camille as Laura react with sparkling eyes, mild frustration, bemusement, and (mostly) committed to keeping professional boundaries intact. Camille can also be seen kicking all sorts of emotional ass in thrillers like Exile with Adam Beach, which is now on VOD, and will soon be seen in the highly anticipated Shelby Oaks, which will screen at the venerable Fantasia Film Festival this summer. In this funny and fascinating interview, Camille talks Shoresy, being a loner, acting in highly dramatic movies, why she doesn't miss auditioning in “the room,” and her dream to be the Nicolas Cage of Canada. In a lively interview with Buz Kloot, Joe Dickie and Lynn Betts, Maygen and Noah of the band Maygen & the Birdwatcher delve into the origins and evolution of their musical journey and their collaboration with the South Dakota Grasslands Coalition. The discussion began with Maygen recounting her unexpected path into music, having grown up with 90's country music in the house thanks to her mother. After having children, she overcame her fear of performing and began as a studio vocalist, eventually forming a duo called Sparrow's Rising. This partnership led to an opportunity to open for the Indigo Girls, where she met Noah, a talented guitarist who shared her passion for music.Noah's background contrasted Maygen's as he grew up disliking country music, influenced by his father's farm boy roots but personally drawn to classic rock and metal. His appreciation for country music grew over time, and when Maygen and Noah met, they clicked immediately, both musically and personally, leading to the formation of Maygen & the Birdwatcher around 2018.Their collaboration matured, with Noah stepping into songwriting and contributing significantly to their melodies, lyrics and message. The pair continually pushed each other to learn and grow, resulting in a dynamic and evolving musical partnership. The conversation then shifted to their acclaimed project, "Where Good Things Grow." Lynn Betts, a consultant for the South Dakota Grassland Coalition, recounted how he discovered Maygen & the Birdwatcher while searching for the perfect band to create a song for a campaign promoting the benefits of grasslands. He spent considerable time listening to various Midwest artists before finding their sound ideal for the project.Maygen and Noah eagerly embraced the challenge. Inspired by the coalition's work and their own experiences touring the grasslands, they crafted lyrics that captured the essence of the landscape and the interconnectedness of its ecosystem. They wrote two songs initially and combined elements from both to create the final version of "Where Good Things Grow," which resonated deeply with the themes of the campaign. The intention from the start was to produce a music video, which eventually featured the band performing amidst the prairie, visually complementing the song's message. The result was a powerful and evocative portrayal of the grasslands' beauty and significance. In recognition of their outstanding work, Maygen & the Birdwatcher received an award from the South Dakota Grassland Coalition, underscoring the impact and excellence of their contribution. The project not only showcased their musical talents but also highlighted the importance of preserving natural landscapes, blending art and advocacy in a compelling way.Overall, this interview highlights the band's journey, their creative process, and this meaningful and innovative collaboration with the South Dakota Grassland Coalition that defines new ways music and advocacy can intertwine.Links: https://wheregoodthingsgrow.org/Watch the full video for ‘Where Good Things Grow” athttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FklZNJWNxcYTo find out more about Maygen and Noah, go to: https://www.maygenandthebirdwatcher.com/or follow them on Facebook or Instagram. @maygenandthebirdwatcher

Bird scientists are worried about a decline in bird populations, even common ones, like crows. They seem to be everywhere, from the smallest island to the biggest city, so it's concerning that crow populations and other species are dropping. The Government is doing too little, too slowly, to meet its own environmental ambitions and statutory commitments, according to a report published today. We hear from the Office for Environmental Protection. The LAMMA Show, taking place in Birmingham today, has 600 exhibitors showcasing the very latest in farm machinery and innovation, everything from specialist soil-aeration machinery to farm solar energy systems, and of course, enormous tractors. Birdwatchers from across the UK have been flocking to a Derbyshire beauty spot to catch a glimpse of an exotic visitor. There have been near record sightings of the colourful waxwing this winter. They've been seen in one spot in the Peak District in their largest numbers since way back in 1970.Presented by Caz Graham and produced by Beatrice Fenton.
Buckle up! We are heading down to the fields of Clemson, South Carolina! I got an email from 3 Booker Rumble D. back in February which said “Neil, I have a guest suggestion for you. J Drew Lanham is a 2022 MacArthur fellow and an American ornithologist. I loved his book and would love to hear you interview him (maybe while you guys go birding?)” Intrigued, I looked him up and discovered I … sort of already knew him? I had read and loved his wonderfully thoughtful and nuanced essay last year called "What Do We Do About John James Audubon?" and his viral YouTube clip called "Rules for the Black Birdwatcher". (“You're gonna need at least two pieces of ID. And never wear a hoodie. Ever.”) So I bought Drew's memoir 'The Home Place' and found it completely entrancing. His writing is poetry — vivid, transportive, meditative. After that I reached out to Drew and we set a time to make the 10-hour haul down to Clemson farm country, wake up at the crack of dawn, and then get picked up by Drew in his Dodge Ram to spend a morning together — birdwatching. J. Drew Lanham is a naturalist, birdwatcher, hunter-conservationist, MacArthur 'Genius' Grant-winning distinguished professor. He is a meditative, philosophical, nature- and wild-loving soul who has deeply considered our long relationship with the natural world and is never afraid to confront harsh truths. “European Starlings are a dark-plumaged being brought over the Atlantic for the services of others,” Drew says at one point. “Hmmm, where have I heard that before?” You'll be riding in the middle seat of the truck, getting out with us between fence posts and grassy meadows, hearing Blue Grosbeaks, Eastern Meadowlarks, and Red-Shouldered Hawks, and listening to Drew's endlessly wise observations about everything from South Carolina's slavery past, why there's blood in tofu, what your birdwatching ‘starter kit' should look like, how to observe a land ethic, how we might behave differently if Chicken Nuggets blinked at us, formative books (of course!), and much, much more. “You can't see everything at once,” Drew reminds us. “So learn to see the everything in one.” With birds serving as a metaphor for everything in life I think you'll love this slow, soul-fueling, wisdom-stuffed conversation with Professor J. Drew Lanham. I left his truck that morning thinking “I want to be more like Drew.” I think you'll feel the same way. On August 10, Water Mill resident Judith Sherman looked through her binoculars at a bird in a distant tree. The bird, an osprey, was in distress and hanging from a branch, its leg tangled in a mass of rope and fishing line. So Sherman called the Evelyn Alexander Wildlife Rescue Center in Hampton Bays, and before long, wildlife rescue volunteer Missy Hargraves was on the case and ready to help. In this week's podcast, the editors and reporter Tom Gogola talk with Hargraves about the harrowing scene, the effort it took to free the osprey, and the good work of the Evelyn Alexander Wildlife Rescue Center.

One of the most difficult skills to pick up as a birdwatcher is how to identify birds in flight. You have to sort through a series of visual clues all at once, at high speed: silhouette, wing shape, how fast it flaps, and patterning. An experienced birder will take in all these and other clues that are hard to put into words — and might say something like: “Look! A hawk! Must be a Cooper's Hawk — it has that giss.” In other words, it has all the telltale signs. But where did this bit of birdwatching slang originate? More info and transcript at BirdNote.org.
