Things are crazy in these streets, but what if you kept your head and didn't move too much to the left and are perfectly positioned for the melt-up that is about to happen? In classrooms across America, only about 1% of teachers are Black men. That gap shapes how millions of students see themselves and their futures. In this episode, Kevin P. Chavous talks with Ahmoni Jones, a seventh-grade math teacher at Soulsville Charter School in Memphis, who's part of that 1%. Jones grew up in a predominantly Black district, surrounded by teachers who looked like him—but never by a Black man at the front of the room. Now he's changing that story. They talk about what drew him to teaching, the influence of his parents—both behavior specialists—and the moment he realized the classroom was where he could make a difference. Jones explains how he keeps math alive for kids who usually hate it, why humor works better than fear, and how programs like Memphis Teacher Residency are helping young teachers of color stay in the profession. It's a conversation about identity, purpose, and the quiet power of showing up for the next generation. The Katherine Massey Book Club @ The C.O.W.S. hosts the 4th study session on Maria Eftimiades's The Sins Of The Mother: The Heartbreaking True Story Behind the Susan Smith Murder Case. In October of 1994 (mere months after the arrest of Orenthal James Simpson), Susan Smith was introduced to the world as a #WeepingWhiteWoman who claimed a no count black dude stole her car with her two small White children in the back seat. White people across the land were furious. It took nearly two weeks for police to discover that Smith not only fabricated the story that a black fella drove off with her kids, she ultimately confessed to drowning her own toddlers. Gus insists that listeners pay particular attention to the black misandry of this case. Last week, we learned that Susan and her White family refused to cooperate with sketch artists to generate a more accurate sketch of the negro fiend who stole her kids. C.O.W.S.'s listeners were taken aback by the number of White people who said they always doubted Smith's story - although they didn't think she had committed murder. Even amidst all the suspicion, a White Woman publicly testified to Susan's good character and demanded that people stop doubting that she was a victim of negro crime. The same day her character testimonial was published, Smith confessed to drowning her toddlers. #FamilyAnihilator #INVEST in The COWS - http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: http://cash.app/$TheCOWS Call: 720.716.7300 Code: 564943#

In our first Pinnacle of Color Series, I will be speaking with Al-Shakise Anderson, CEO of BWS Massage Concierge and Financial Services Leader. Too often, the story of Black male success has been limited, overlooked, or defined by others. In this episode of Black Men Speak, we tackle what it really means to break generational barriers — and how Black men are rewriting the playbook on wealth, leadership, and legacy. In our conversation, Al and I dive into the patterns we've had to unlearn, the challenges of being “the first” or “the only,” and the role entrepreneurship plays in shifting cycles from struggle to sustainability. We'll explore how harmful narratives are dismantled, and how new stories of success are built on resilience, vision, and community. Al-Shakise Anderson is a dynamic entrepreneur, wellness advocate, and financial services professional dedicated to helping people achieve success through holistic well-being and smart financial strategies. As the CEO and founder of BWS Massage Concierge, Kise specializes in bringing mobile wellness solutions—massage, stretch therapy, and adaptive wellness—to corporations, in-home clients, and adults with disabilities across New Jersey. In addition to his wellness business, Kise is a leader in the financial services industry, mentoring agents and helping families build generational wealth through life insurance and financial literacy. His personal journey from humble beginnings to business ownership fuels his passion for leadership, community impact, and empowering others to reach their full potential. This episode is about more than business — it's about reclaiming identity, redefining what winning looks like, and ensuring the next generation starts further down the field than we did.

Historically Black colleges and universities have played a vital role in educating generations of students. But today, enrollment among Black males at HBCUs is at its lowest level since the mid-1970s. Studies indicate that when Black men disengage from HBCUs and higher education, the consequences are far-reaching. We examine the impact, why this is happening, what schools are doing to combat it and more.

Dr. Sarah Pritchett, Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources for Seattle Public Schools, meets with Christopher B. Bennett for this episode of the Seattle Medium's Rhythm & News Podcast.

Khalid Oluewu, principal of Webster Elementary School in Chicago, has done what many principals would love to do: He has created structures and practices at his school to ACCELERATE learning for all, and in particular for Black males. Wow. The idea started when he was a teacher and taught middle school math and had students come to him years behind. He looped with the students and in three short years he not only got them on grade level, but when they went to high school they were able to skip Algebra and start with Geometry. Now as a principal he put four things in place to accelerate learning - to have students learn one and a half years' worth in just a year): Have teachers focus on PRIORITY standards Have teachers provide JUST-IN-TIME supports not live in remediation Provide more individualized learning by having teachers use small groups and by partnering with organizations who could provide high-impact tutoring Using tech platforms for more individualized learning The results? In one year the overall proficiency level leaped from just 6% to 50% and for Black boys, it went from just 2% to 30%! Truly impressive. And those numbers keep climbing up, far from the single-digit proficiency levels they were before. To learn more, check out these resources: Read Khalid's research paper: Year of Acceleration for All (Yes, that includes Black Males) Visit Webster Elementary School if you're in Chicago Reach out via email: koluewu@cps.edu As always, send your comments, questions, and show ideas to mike@schoolleadershipshow.com.
